In the movie Inherit The Wind (1960) a busy hot dog vendor in Hillsborough, in the middle of the carnival that has erupted in the town over the pending trial of Bertram Cates for teaching evolution instead of divine creation in school, is asked which side of the question he's on. His answer: "I haven't got any opinions, mister. They're bad for business."

An interesting thing while watching this is my feeling of admiration for Ryan, and his lifestyle. And I have this feeling that "I want a life like that, but", and then can't stop but think that we all can go for a city strol, walk in the nature, café, you name it, wherever you are. You don't have to go some place special to change your life, and there's always that saying - wherever you go, there you are.

That, "Did you always do your best?" question really hit me. I contemplated it for a moment and everything that I've ever done, and I think I actually have always done my best in the situations I've found myself in. My best wasn't always good, but it was certainly the best I could do. For the things that matter, I've continued to redefine what my best is. It's a great question to reflect on, and I'm happy I can answer it in that way.

I am not a doctor. My boyfriend has debilitating neuropathy, it affects his legs and feet. Because neuropathy is a brain signal to that area, his doctor prescribed Cymbalta. Ok, here I am showing how I am SO not a doctor 😂... but, it is working with the same area of the brain where the signals for the pain are coming from. Thank goodness it is working. He'd rather the side effects of adjusting to that medication and any lingering effects than where he was basically bed bound.

Look into Dr Sarno and the pain Cure clinic. Been there and am out the other side with no dr intervention. As an artist, I try to experience other people's work and appreciate what they created - and I consistently find myself having to fight off the inclination to judge it, to have a critical opinion, as though that proves to the world that I have a wonderfully diverse palette. This was such a wonderful reminder that having that opinion is not only unnecessary but can be distracting, toxically competitive, and ultimately unproductive.

That’s why most of the stoics committed suicide, they said there is no God, so they disconnected themselves from the power source, the source of wisdom and connection to life. Seneca, Bormus, Nero and over 1,000 stoics accounted all died by suicide. While king David said in pslams 30-40 any man who says in his heart there is no God is a damn fool. Proved correct. All the stoics rejected Gods, and tried to figure things out on their own, only to out themselves into a corner and they took their own lives. Suicide is not the way to life, but to death, they didn’t know how to live, while all religions from Christianity to Islam, Buddhism and Hindusim, give life, through our Gods, our fellowship, brotherhood and friendships. Stoics were idiots.

The older I get, (68) the more I realize that I really don't know very much about anything. This allows me, hopefully, to possess a small measure of humility as I go about my days. It's what we call in addiction recovery, "being teachable". On a related note, some years ago, I removed the word "opinion" from my vocabulary and thinking. The very definition of the word opened my eyes to the dubious nature of what I think. We share our "experience, strength, and hope", the key word being "experience". What I "think" doesn't matter, how I feel doesn't matter...It's what I "DO" that matters! All the best, Mark

Ryan, Thank you for the accidental introduction to stoicism, it is helping through my crises as a 50 year old female in 2025. I have begun reading meditations and hope to begin reading more on the recommended list. I have always done what (I thought was) the right thing and am an educated successful working women that is also a mother and wife. Although the "stoic philosophy" makes sense it strikes me that reading the wise words of the dead lately, much is through the experience of the (mostly) men). as a women some of the crises is a bit different as a women and solutions not so straight forward. Have you ever considered exploring how women can navigate theses truths understanding that we are held to higher standards and the actions are not always as rewarding for a female as they are for males in our complex society without allyship. Think that as half of American rejected a women candidate for president that represented what I strived to be as a successful women I am not sure what to be. If another person tells me that "you have your family" I want to slap them. I am an individual and I love my family, but am not defined by breeding and marriage alone. How do I apply stoicism to my life that is meaningful to me, understanding that what it means to be a women is so under attack and predefined by society more then just being a good person or true leader like a man is seen as? Anyone looking at this?
