Memento mori: every good thing that happens in life is fleating, enjoy them while they last and be greatful for them; every bad thing that happens is smaller than death itself, they will pass, and if you can dominate fear of death you can dominate everything; life is finite, whatever you have lived is already gone, whatever is ahead of you is what you have left, live it to its fullest extent.

I finally started reading again after over 10 years without reading one book cover to cover. I've now read 2 and am on my third this year. Started working out every single day, running on my off days. Quut drinking alcohol. I'm going to keep this up for 2022 and then for the rest of my life. Feels great Update: I'm down 40 lbs, I finally started working in the field I went to school for. My relationship is so much stronger, I'm much more present every single day. I'm happy and content. Taking a week off and I'm going to make sure to get some reading done! Everyone's messages of encouragement are so very much appreciated. Momentum mori, make today matter

I am in a hotel room right now, I quit the old me. I am tired of other people having power over me, my life, my decisions, and who I want to be. Memento mori indeed. I will keep on living the life I want starting this day. This is day one. It's no longer me saying that the life I want is going to happen one day. Thank you Ryan Holiday.

Im a 17 year old teenage girl, i very suddenly questioned my relationship and cycled into anxiety for days, but i finally understood i was scared of doing it, i was scared of showing up for myself. And yeah, that anxiety is still there, but this is the 2nd video of your's ive watched and they both really truly have helped me understand to keep moving forward, to focus on what you have now, and to just appreciate the current good you have, dont fret about when youll lose it because even if this relationship somehow lasts past high school, him or i will die, and i just have to appreciate the day to day.

I have been a Stoic for 55 years and didn't even know it was a defined ideal. My old employee mentioned that he thought I was one so I looked it up on Google and KZbin. This channel came up first and I am so inspired by it. The memento Mori part I learned from Buddhists. This idea is also one of their practices. Still, I needed to be reminded after losing my job last year from ageism, turning 65, etc... it's not what happens to you in life but what you do with what happens. Thanks.

WHAT a great video!!! Amazing habits, easy to apply! 1 Practice and apply philosophy 2 Practice something creative to get your juices going 3 Go for a walk without your phone everyday 4 Make progress on 4/6 of your goals every single day 5 Serve the community, engage with the world 6 Practice an endurance sport a couple times a week 7 Cherish your loved ones 8 Read! Ryan's tips for reading are amazing, I wrote down don't read bad books and that the point of reading is to get better Last but not least: Memento Mori, remember we all will die and not to take everything so seriously! This is all just what I wrote down, should be accurate enough, I hope it helps in application

its nice to have play in background time to time to retrigger it, after we slack down hehe we become even brainwashing about when we want to brainwahs or relax.. lol inceptions. for exemple when i go to work i mindset completly diferent, cause i cant be normal human with mentally ill people, and cant let their intense lifestyle affect me emotionaly, but then at home i can explode my personality, it become very strategic , logic, advantageous, to trigger on and off certain aspect. i cannot waste time not learning those diference and master them. as they give me surplus agility either at work or in hobies.. for music i want to be wild and free, at work i want to be empty solid robotic serious respected objectified , comfortable safe and easily recognised, for their narcism as im just an internal object. facinating to switch both extrem.. totally be yourself, totally be what is required-asked.

Hey Ryan, I hope you feel great now. I learned about Stoicism 1 mounth ago. I started reading Marcus Aurelius-Meditations. It is the book that I liked very much and it changed my life of course. I became more diciplined, more patient and more active in social life. I also start to improve my english skills again two years later with this dicipline. I choose one of your videos for every week. I watch them many times in a day. This video is mine 2. Video and first one was 7 stoic strategies for being creative. It was awesome! I learned many things and I put in my life of course. After that, I started to make a little of progress on exercise, learning english, reading. And today’s one of my responsiblities was leaving a comment any video on youtube. I choosed this video because I wanted to tell you thank you and this video is choosen by me for the week. Here is the sentence that i loved. You could be good today instead you choose tomorrow M.A. Take care!

The Memento Mori bit hit me. Since having COVID in early January, I've had anxiety and have been getting into my own head. All I've been doing is overthinking stuff, "When will this go away?" "Is there something wrong with me??" I've been checked by doctors, I've been reassured I'm fine, but still, I dwell on the thought of being anxious. It's led to being anxious about having anxiety, which sounds silly. It's hard to understand until you go through it, but if you are, just realize that they are all thoughts. Your brain is more powerful than anything. YOU control your thoughts, they don't control you. Don't dwell on things. It's easier said than done, but live in the present moment. Memento Mori, you will die. That applies to whatever you're going through as well. It will NOT last. It will go away. Embrace whatever it is, don't fight it. Accept it and grow on it. Don't look for a quick answer, look for patience and focus on the long-term process.

I was thinking about writing a comment under this video but I couldn’t have put it better myself with what you’ve put here buddy, felt the exact same for a while in terms of covid and the current climate but really couldn’t come to terms with why my mind was so set on creating anxious thoughts. Definitely going to start using the phrase more, feels like I’ve already had a small weight lifted just understanding it a bit more!

@@TreFlip278 For sure man, just know you're not alone and that it happens to everyone at one point. Just take it day by day and understand that it is a process. Here's some tips that have helped me out a TON on getting better. 1) Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day (have a general daily routine as well), 2) If you feel it coming on, accept it and focus on breathing/or meditate. 3) Occupy your mind, an empty mind is the devil's playground.

Exactly and so what if any of us die cuz of COVID? Nonetheless life is just a journey and it can potentially end any time. There is not an absolute right way to live life and really nothing to be scared about. We are all life long learners too. Embrace in the beauty of this world really, there's such a limited amount of time to be fearful of anything, as you can literally be fearful for your whole life. Therefore be fearless, be an explorer, be a learner, utilize your limited time to go on a seamless and never-ending exciting adventure of life.

14:06 "Ma flesche (asseure toy) n'espagnera personne Vous danserez trestout ce balet, que je sonne" = "My arrow (rest assured) won't hit anyone, You'll dance aplenty in this ballet, which I am ringing." (i.e. as in a doorbell). Ryan I just want to say I think these lessons are really great. Few are both knowledgeable and bold enough to read Meditations. If I may, I would like to add to lesson 6: Cherish your Loved Ones. I recently lost someone that I knew very well, but would not necessarily consider a "loved one." She was an ex-girlfriend turned friend, and through 5 years of knowing her, I just sort of started taking her for granted. After her loss, I was deeply saddened, WAY more than I'd expected (more than some of my other family members). What I learned is that first, this is not limited to just family, it can be any connection. Connections are all we have in life, and it can be so easy to take someone for granted. Second, it's very possible your conscious mind doesn't know how impactful this connection really is, so be grateful for their existence, even if you feel mad at them. Third (from other deaths as well), the way a person dies, as in the when and the how, greatly impacts that person's legacy, and possibly even unfairly. Also Lesson 8, on reading, I would add watch KZbin everyday. There is so much to gain from this majestic technological improvement to life. Some books may provide more value upon reading them, but is it so crazy to think that watching a well-designed visual summary would be more beneficial to one's life than wrestling with a work such as Faust? If the person is artistic (and fluent in German), then perhaps not, but there's always the element of life practicality, a key priority for stoics.

To me, Memento Mori means maintaining your level-headedness at all times - in both good times and in bad. It means not getting too high in good times and not getting too low in bad times. Of course, we're all human and it is human to feel and express emotions. However, memento mori helps keep those emotions in check ✅️

Little changes everyday leads to bigger progress than most people can even fathom. Most adults have an hour in the evening they could devote to something or anything everyday and over a year or five or twenty you could literally master an entire subject or learn countless new skills or learn new things about yourself and family. I have noticed that some people became angry with me as I began to practice stoicism. It wasn't what I did that made them angry, it was what I stopped doing (indulging in gossip, avoiding value judgements, obsessively following the news). They started assuming a lot of things about me. But I can't control what other people think. I am happy.

Ryan, I now understand why in Taoism, Tai Chi and Qi Gong is included as a daily practice to provide a clear thinking ability to absorb the principles and belief structure to improve one's life. With this video to make that connection for me, I can match the four virtues with Taoist values, Buddhist values as well as widespread religious lessons I have studied over the course of my lifetime. I'm not sure why this connections was missing for me before. But, now I own it. Thank you and well done. I am loving "Discipline is Destiny", by the way. As a kid my family would always go for walks. Un the neighborhood or we'd go to the park and walk the entirety of the park perimeter. Now as an adult I would take walks with husband the same way. And we've continued it with kids. It's amazing what it does to your mental health!

You are good for sure. I'm growing as a person faster than I ever have. I finally get it. The huge change and most significant for me was Forgive, Forgive, Forgive. It's the best gift you can give yourself. I've let go of a lot of family baggage and from other relationships that I have no control of and it makes me a better, Son, Brother, Friend, coworker etc. I do agree that cussing takes a away from the message it's just bad form, but you be you. I also think that most of what you are teaching and repeating does not fit for everyone so I take what works from me from your videos, book recommendations and how people are now responding to me. I've let go of my arrogance and feelings of superiority in interacting with people and the public. I've rediscovered Reading so that's a plus/plus for sure. I'm on your daily email too. I do have one questions and since RH does not respond here maybe your audience can answer this for me and maybe for others who are thinking the same thing. If you want to be rude, snarky and stupid with a hateful response please refrain...go to twitter for that if you must> Anyway, where does laughter and humor come into play here? RH never laughs or makes a joke....it makes we wonder if stoics may just be taking themselves too seriously. If that works for some then so-be-it but I need laughter and humor as part of my coping skills and how I interact with people. Good humor is best> I have no need to belittle or shame anyone with snarky responses. I would like to add that I've always been active and an athlete and I would die if I couldn't get outside everyday. It has keep me sane all these years. I have let go of being so competitive it's just not important anymore to me. I'm no longer afraid of dying either. I've done good on this earth with hiccups of course but all-in-all ....I'm Good. I would like to meet RH one day and since he's just up the road from me I will put it on my to-do/bucket list for 2023.

I see the point of momento mori, but if you do not get upset by the bad treatment of others and do not react by expecting expect better from friends, family or others, as a minimum, then the behaviour will be repeated by the offender. That's what "letting things go" has taught me in life. I can "let things go", certainly, and have done, plenty of times, but then I just don't want to see or have contact with those who disrespect or abuse me in any way. Therefore, in my view, "standing up for yourself", refusing to accept bad behaviour, refusing to be adversely affected by someone else's selfishness or disregard, is entirely necessary for self esteem, and ultimately, mental well being. I think you are spot on with most of the philosophy and ideas you are putting forward, Ryan, and I appreciate your efforts, its just that I can't get my head around this contradiction. Certainly, Stoicism is about doing the best for yourself and others. But if you're "letting things go" all the time, then you will end up being a punchbag and a football for the ignorant and selfish who think you are a push over and will roll over easily. I know people who don't like arguing or fighting with others, even when they are clearly being maltreated or abused. The result is that their self esteem is on the floor most of the time, and in refusing to stand up and defend themselves, the behaviour becomes a pattern and more and more people end up abusing or badly treating those who are passive in their approach to bullying, calumny, poor treatment, selfishness and such. If Stoicism is about doing the best you can for yourself, as far as I can see, "letting things go" runs counter to that because of tendency of people to recognise that behaviour and take full advantage of it. So you're not doing yourself any favours at all by letting things go on the basis that some day you will no longer exist. I would argue that your demise will be accelerated by allowing others to dump on you. If "letting things go" means walking away from negative types and those who have upset you, then fine. I can do that, and have done. I set myself "maximum bullshit" limits, and when that point is reached, I walk away, to protect yself and my own self esteem. Is that what you mean?

I love point 5. In an interview I listened to, one a well known endurance athlete said "on the other side of suffering is greatness." He was talking in the same context as point 5 and how endurance sports can help your attitude towards overcoming obstacles in life.

i heard that last one at the right time and the right way. i can't say how hard it hit me, it filled me such a sense of love and appreciation of life. An appreciation for the small time that I get. Memento Mori, two simple words that made me reflect on my life as though it was completely shattered. thank you for just putting out what you believe is right to say. it resonates in a way that i cannot fully appreciate other than to do everything i can to embody it. thank you for letting me learn that.

Point number 4 is absolutely crucial. The word stoic has been turned into this “trend” where it’s mean to be so self-involved and it misses the entire point of stoicism. Thank you for addressing that.

Hi Ryan, Have you read any of the books of the Bible? 🤔 You have recently popped up in my KZbin and I love hearing you share your thoughts and hard won wisdom. Everything you have shared I read first in the Holy Scriptures. I often re-read Proverbs for inspiration. Thank you so much for being an inspiration. We all need genuine mentors like you. Thank you ❤

A Russian proverb says: A man that walks never looses hope. Order (time, money, energy, life, lifestyle, work, priorities) is the virtue by which heaven and diligence and we'll being are achieved and most likely innerpeace, success and good health too on earth; but without it none of those are achieved.

One thing I have to disagree on is that you should not quit bad books just because you judged them on first 100 pages. It happened to me a lot of times, where I wasn't impressed with a first half of a book, but the second part completely blew me away. Other than that, I agree with everything. This video is so good!
