Ryan shows a quote by JBP and agrees with it even expounding on it. Then goes on to attack JBP saying "When I watch Jordan Peterson repeatedly dead name someone for I don't know what. Shits and giggles? Because he is a bigot? Because he likes the attention?" Oxford dictionary defines a straw man argument as "an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument." Ryan is an incredibly intelligent and talented man. He either is willfully ignorant of JBP's motive or he is intentionally misrepresenting his position. As far as my comment being "pseudo-intellectual". I see how you could see it that way with no context. I assumed that anyone who watched the video would be able to recognize the fallacy. I was/am not obligated to elaborate. I picked up the term "straw man" in a college English class that was focused on arguments. It doesn't matter where the term is picked up, if understood and used correctly. Just pointing that out to show that it wasn't picked up in "podcast land". Reading through these comments something occurred to me. I don’t think people realize how programmed they have become. Deprogramming is a big part of the Stoic journey and knowing thyself. There are also classical and modern perspectives on stoicism. The nonstop social stream has really brought so much noise and confusion and terrible advice. Content creators create content for you to consume and for them to make money from mostly. Really look into why they are saying what they are saying. What are they doing and why? I agree with the essential point Ryan is making re: psychedelics - they’re not a replacement for hard-won wisdom and should be used with caution. But what they can offer is a brief window into a deeper knowledge, a deeper experience of being. And I believe most people could benefit greatly from having that experience. But I strongly disagree with Ryan’s characterization of most people who use psychedelics as evangelizing for them or needing to do them again and again. I haven’t done psychedelics in years, and I rarely bring them up in conversation. But I’ll be glad to tell you how they’ve changed my life. The dangers of psychedelics are real and should be discussed before using them. But I’m glad I’ve used them. They helped expand my understanding of reality, and break out of a myopic materialist worldview that wasn’t helping me live a good life. They could do a a lot of good for a lot of folks.

@RickRoy117 Psychedelics can kill your ego but they can also inflate it if you misuse them. I would suggest doing a lot of research and being very mindful of your intentions. Practice meditation before you dose. Plan everything out and take notes before during and after the trip. Do your own research, because psychedelics affect everyone a little differently. I think a good starter psychedelic is 1.5grams of psilocybin mushrooms or 100 micrograms of LSD (a 100ug tab from the street is usually only 60-80ug, which is a safer dose to start with).
@eyemazed26 күн бұрын
Just a point about psychedelics, as someone who has known to dabble in them - you mention people come back from the experience with "interesting" insights, they're actually pretty basic ideas that are also found in religious texts. I'd like to offer you my perspective on this. While the ideas you get on psychedelic journeys are quite simple, the depth to which you can understand and engage with them (even embody them) increases significantly. For example, someone saying "health is important" invokes a compeltely different level of understanding in a sober individual and an individual who has undergone a trip or a meditation on the subject of health. And in my opinion, this is the key. Because it opens up doors of possibilities and connections to that idea that you would have otherwise dismissed or been unable to perceive. This is why psychedelics are so successful in treating addictions. Because you finally understand, on a visceral (and not just intellectual) level why (and just how much) the neurotic pattern you're engaged with actually hurts you
@terezarasovska834612 күн бұрын
I agree with you but also it is important to note that people should not just randomly take them by themselves without any guidence. If that’s the morning routine you follow you are going to be exhausted before you have actually done anything.
