I think an adapter is the way forward on this as CHAdeMO is slowly phased out there will be lots of Leaf owners willing to either build or pay for an adapter themselves. I'm really looking forward to your next video Daniel, It's good to know that this can actually be done, great work as always!

I'm very reassured to see this type of adapter is in development. I'm currently running a 2014 Leaf and wasn't looking at getting rid of it as we just got a V2H charger and are now using it as a home battery. If fact we're looking at cheap second hand Leaf for extra storage.

I REALLY wouldn't mind a total conversion to CCS. ALL quick chargers here have CCS, but only some have CHAdeMO. What's even worse, since the CHAdeMO stations are slower, the rate is also lower and I often find myself waiting inline for that single CHAdeMO station out of 6 that's also the only one in use, and by an unoccupied CCS car.

What is to become of our beloved LEAFs? Pretty sure this is the place to be for answers, but... I guess never thought a "shared interconnect adapter" was one of them. The best solution, to me, would be a swap-kit that would allow competent techs to retrofit the existing LEAF fleet with whichever standard prevails locally.

Hey Dala, a correct is that the ethernet/PLC comms are happening over the Control Pilot (CP) Line of the CCS socket, relative to earth. It will be best if you are able to route the CP and PP signals with the earth cable to protect against spurious EMC effects from the fast charger, which can take out the comms! Cool project.

Hi Dala, I could hypothetically give you the spec for CHAdeMO + CCS. CCS to chamedo is "easy" as the other way around is more complicated: the charger waits for a small "precharge" from the car before going to the next state, whereas in CCS it's easier. Also, I think for some reason the chademo consortiom forbade these converters, so it wont be "chademo approved". My knowledge is really old now, but it's a really nice project !

Main problem in locking mechanism. On chademo port locking controlled by charging station. On ither ports - by car. So CCS/CHAdeMO adapter must provide locking for both side prior begining charging process. And you can not start charging on non locked port because it dangerous for peoples.

hah! I was just about to write you :D My buddy has found the adapter on ali and we were wondering if we could make a youtuber buy one of them to see if they work. I would not be surprised if the electronics could be shrunk to handle-size with a custom PCB. Translating messages does not require a supercomputer either. 3d prints can be very strong with 100% infill. Especially light-cured resin. I would not want anything that will go wobbly at 100°c tho from an FDM printer.

Hello Dala, impressive work I hope you will be able to shrink that case to a quarter of its size to be more manageable and that it will be for sale soon as for building it on open source like you say is not possible to all of us ! I am a chef and I've got no clues in electronics . For central Europe it is important for all leaf owners as chademo is really disappearing fast its no longer possible to travel long distances so for my part I park my leaf and use my faithful vw combi for long travel.

Great video! Thanks The problem with CHAdeMO is that there are so few chargers. Another way to approach this would be modify the Leaf to 3-phase charging. With 3-phase you can charge with up to 22 kW and there are quite a lot of those chargers. I know that CHAdeMO is like 50 kW but it is quite rare to get that charging speed, many times I don't get more then 25 kW on my Leaf.
@pashko90
@pashko90 10 ай бұрын
What you can't charge at full 50 kWh is a problem if your battery with luck of ability to accept it. My car with approximately 30 kWh pack accepts 45kwh at 95-99 % soh.
@Jan93Banan
@Jan93Banan 10 ай бұрын
Both my 2014 leaf and my 2022 leaf I used to own received 50kW no problem. As long as the battery's SOC is not over like 70% and the charging station is not splitting it's total power output for multiple cars you should always get this.

@@pashko90 Yes I live in cold climate, in the summer I can also get 50 kW. What I was trying to say is that there are very few CHAdeMO chargers here. To get more places to charge a CCS to CHAdeMO adapter would be great but an alternative would be 3-phase charging since those chargers are also easier to find. The difference in charging speed doesn't matter 22 kW would be a great improvement to the 6 kW I get on 1-phase.

After owning our 2016 Leaf for 7 years and only charging at home since buying the car, I have resigned myself to never drive more than 40 miles from home base. Best I can tell, we have 1 Chademo plug within 100 miles of where we live, and no CCS plugs within 100 miles once you travel more than 15 miles from home. Our Leaf is a basic grocery getter only!

as I've read online, a lot of car manufactures are going to all use tesla charge ports for their cars, it be much better and easier imo to look into updating the leaf to support tesla plugs instead of adapting to CCS, which is being phased out along with CHAdeMO plus most DC fast charging stations have both CCS and CHAdeMO with my experiences as i own a 2012 leaf. i like the tesla all in one plug. plus its reverse compatible with already available adapters with the phasing out plugs.

Very interesting update; thanks for sharing. ☮️ Chademo seems to make a CCS to Chademo adapter expensive and large. Adding a CCS port to the Leaf or Triplet might be an alternative. Given that some cars with CCS charge ports are now being written off in crashes, it might be less expensive to buy a used CCS port. AC charging is controlled by an onboard battery charger, while DC charging is controlled externally. From your knowledge of EV charging, what components are fitted in the car to enable DC charging, apart from the charge port? 🤔

I hope we get new information about this in the future.

Will that end up being that big? Looking at the size of what you have and what is in that demo I would say it would be much batter to have your own boards. Also you can add a 12V plug with long enough cable to get into a cabin in so you don't need a 12V battery. So I'm sure you will not end up with a size of a china fake but something in size of a adaptor not a suitcase would be grate. That takes just too much space in car.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what i am talking about! With that out of the way... Why are charging ports standards so complicated, I feel like a lot of the communications between the car and the charging station are completely unnecessary, why does the charging station need to know everything about my car? In my opinion it should only know how much current to supply at any given time, everything else should be left to the car to figure out.

@@CubbyTechNACS communicates the same way as CCS, that's how all the automakers can promise cheap adapters. Prior to the NACS spec, the old Tesla protocol (which uses the same plug) is more similar to CHAdeMO. Tesla used to sell a CHAdeMO to Tesla-plug adapter because the protocols were so similar. Theoretically Tesla could allow Leafs to charge at Superchargers using a simple adapter and the old protocol.
