Depends on why it scares you. Does it scare you because you're about to do things which are potentially dangerous to you or property? Or does it scare you because of the complexity? Questions, do you have sufficient level of knowledge and expertise to carry the work out safely? Often the inadequate level of expertise of the individual creates the danger.

You're crazy, I love your thinking! In the back of my mind I keep thinking about community solar that feeds into a community battery bank. The battery supplies the houses/business at peak times and is charged using solar/cheap grid periods. V2G would be the cheapest battery bank in this scenario but your reclaimed leaf packs would be awesome too, especially for businesses that used more power

That grid connection can be really expensive. In city uprgading electric switchboard and new mains cabe can be tens of thousands of euros (50 000 € ? / reference from apartment house buildings few years back, but you might save on labor here). And electric company is also happy to charge for new/upgraded transformer and possible new/upgraded grid power line (it can be dastardly). Plus upgrading the subscribtion (which alone can be in tune of 10 000 € in these amperages depending on the company; this might contain the dastardly part).

I was expecting that Kempower unit to have at least some battery storage inside it when it's that big. I seems that you basically want 200 kWh worth of batteries and connect those to the Kempower unit + inverter to feed your house and you have 400 kW quick charging combined with off-grid ability in case the power is lost. (Assuming you can discharge your battery storage at 2C safely.

Looks like you need another transformer connected to the high voltage. I guess the overhead wires would easily take an extra 20Amps or so. Assume it's around 11kV. Take care. Working at those levels, arc flash can literally take your face off. Plus I hope your batteries don't turn into a firework display making hydroflouric acid fumes.

Nominally 400kwh @ 230V service level is 1,740A. With rounding the fed should be sized for input wire capable of 2kA. That's a LOT of copper. Here in the States, Tesla supercharger stations usually request a 4000A 480V service, about 4X what you've got there and support 8 or more of the highest throughput satellites for individual Tesla cars at one time.

I thougt you might have already worked for CPOs occasionally, analysing their charging stuff as well as protocols, when things go wrong. So, even more interesting than a brand-new Kempower DC fast charge unit - and way more affordable - would be a broken one (let's say after some failed software update or with intermittent faults that trigger safety measures), that no one else wants to diagnose and fix. Keep up the good work, Dala, I like your work a lot on bringing broken stuff back to life. I cannot warm up to your Nissan Leaf tuning efforts, however.

@@rkan2If you're going to start throwing figures around, at least get them right. 240 volts single phase is 415 Volts when 3 phase is used, not 400.
@rkan2
@rkan2 11 ай бұрын
@@deang5622 That depends which country you are in, as officially them single phase voltages could be 220-240V outside the ~100V single phase countries. In Europe single phase is generally between 220-240V, but officially 230V. Typically then 400V is used. You are not much better throwing numbers around ;)
@deang5622
@deang5622 11 ай бұрын
@@rkan2 No it does not depend on which country you are in. I proved it mathematically as part of my degree at university many years ago. If the nominal voltage is 240 volts then the phase to phase voltage in a 3 phase system is 415v. This is not up for discussion. It's a fact. It can be easily proven mathematically, either using trigonometrical functions or using complex numbers. Note I said nominal. In the UK the nominal voltage is 230V RMS which gives a phase to phase of 400V. In practice the voltage in the UK is not 230, it is still 240 and all we did was change the specification of the voltage, the nominal voltage and the tolerances to bring us into line with the EU, we didn't actually change the supply voltage as that would have required extensive transformer changes across the country. When we talk about supply voltages we always talk about the specified voltage, the nominal voltage and not a measured voltage on the actual supply line which is subject to variation throughout the day with load. So any country specifying their nominal supply voltage as 230 volts, and operating a 3 phase system, the phase to phase voltage (the voltage across any two phases) is 400 volts. And that is independent of country.
@rkan2
@rkan2 11 ай бұрын
@@deang5622Ok, cool story bro. There is also another misunderstanding. I think the op was referring to some other country's nominal voltage. In dalaland single phase nominal is 230V and not 240V. Thus three phase 63A and not some single phase they were referring to.

No worries, even though it's rated for 400 kW, your Nissan Leaf will only draw a maximum of 50 kw from it. That transformer should have no problem with that, if you charge at night. You will need a 3 phase power meter, to bring in the necessary power connection. Time to call your local utility!

How much did that thing cost? Why does it need to be so big? It must provide enough power for 10 houses.
