At the Cabin November 2018

Arnie Cake
1 cup of sugar
1 large egg
2 tablespoons shortening
3 cups of chopped apples
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cream the sugar, egg and shortening together add the dry ingredients and mix well if the mix appears to be too dry you can add a little milk to lighten it up. Add the apples and mix well. Turn into a buttered 8X8 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F. Until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out dry, around 30 to 40 minutes.

I had to put my rescue dog down a few days ago. I had taken her in from my son when they moved years ago. I was just going to keep her a few months, but it turned into years, because I was too attached. She stayed with me and protected me, and was the best dog. She was happy to be where I was and whatever I was doing, much like your Angel. She had a tumor, cutting off her air. Didn’t really know anything was wrong until the day before we went to vet. My heart has broken because I didn’t know anything was wrong. I thought she had slowed down because she was getting older. She just seemed happy and contented. A blessing I am sure. Her name was “Little Bit” because she was a little bit of many breeds. You love on Angel for me, and I miss my dog! Apple cake looks wonderful!!! Thank you for doing these films, they seem to soothe me.

Your beloved friend, Little Bit lived a loved filled life, take comfort in knowing that you gave her joy and in return she gave what we all long for; unconditional love. Sorry too hear about the sad news of your dog,,i can relate to what u had too do, I had to put my cat of sixteen years down,she had a stroke, & was on the verge of loosing her front paw.which was effected do from the stroke she had, her name was crystal,the vet told me to put her down because an infection might spread from the paw to her system,the bone was showing in her arm so her paw was deteriorating,oh God I felt bad, the worst year of my life.2013 bad year,still greave and miss her.

50 minutes - yikes, it's Christmas 😂 Arnie cake looks great, especially since I have all the ingredients; very tempted to make it tomorrow. After watching your boiled cider video, I reduced a gallon of cider to about a pint in my Instant Pot overnight, and will try some on my oatmeal in the morning. I think Angel would like her own sleeping bag please 😉. Thanks for another very enjoyable video, your many cabin fans will certainly appreciate it!!

Dale, I enjoyed the story of the Arnie Cake and the photo. Such a delightful history lessons. The little children in the photo, are still the same at this age - how wonderful to see your parents and Hazel Calder. I will be making the Arnie Cake this week-end. I think it has been a wonderful life on the island. The snow is beautiful and the berry bush should be on a Christmas Card. What a beautiful life you have and I love Angel. Dale, nobody even cares about the "Old Man's medications" on the windowsill. We all take medications or vitamins, and your attention to them is unwarranted. (I am sorry that the sensitivities of viewers might preclude your need to edit such things, it pains me to think that anyone who views your videos cares at all or would find a deficiency in it). P.S. - your apologetic character is so endearing and always has been. It is a way of thinking that is all but gone. I am 52 an American but have the tendency towards an apology for anything I perceive to be even slightly out of whack.

You should get angel a dog back pack I am sure she wouldn't mind helping bringing some supplies for you both ;-) Great you could get the photo. Is crazy you just went to school in the snow no matter what. Now in the UK anyway half an inch and everything stops. Here when we get snow you see people off to work and school on bicycles lol Even the post comes on a scooter with a trailer. The boil cake worked out well. I dont think the crow pie recipe from the war stood the test of time lol. Its funny I can not sleep with a quilt all far to warm for me. I have a blanket summer and winter. My wife has pjs and two quilts in winter lol I would shrivel and die under that lot.. I will have to look at the books your reading I like that sort of stuff. Always enjoy the cabin adventures. Stay warm. We will see what winter brings us...

I always thought there was another side to the story about Hazel walking to the school in bad storms I think it was more because she was concerned that some child would walk to school and not be able to get in out of the storm . It was her responsibility to unlock the building and get the fire going to warm the room up. CROW PIE I can see why that didn't catch on LOL.

It is 59 degrees here in Southwest Georgia with a forecast of 34 degrees in a few nights..we consider that cold, lol. I am preparing new warm housing for feral mama cat and her young kitten that is living in my backyard. I enjoy caring for them.. feeding and fresh water daily. I just ordered water bowl with warmer to keep water from icing and cat warming pad for their new cathouse (had improvised temporary cat house with cardboard box I placed under my carport). My 7 year old great niece named them Sparkle and Glitter on one of her visits. Love of animals, good food and family and friends are what life is all about....wouldn't you agree? Stay warm and big hug to Angel!

Do you make jelly with those rose hips? The bush is beautiful and you certainly have a bumper crop on it. I've just gotten all the ingredients to try your fruitcake. Good to see you back in the cabin. Looks cozy I would love to have a cabin to get away from the crazy times. Your stories remind me of some that my Grandpa used to tell. He was born in 1896 and lived to be 102. He was sharp until he passed away. The Arnie cake looks delicious. The natives here in south Georgia would be frozen if they were there. Us transplants wouldn't be concerned if it was that cold.

My grandmother, his mother, was a teacher, and I like to think I inherited her gift of teaching and love of learning. Oh, Dale, when you said a taste of Christmas, it hit my heart! The aroma of cakes In the kitchen, along with Mince Pies, are a fond memories for me. And now as An older lady, I value those memories and flavors! I also realized, they put Brandy in the mince pies! Lol!

I now have the "Calder Rose" growing at the summerhouse... but it is still very small.

It takes a few years but once it gets established the annual growth is amazing. The birds planted one in my garden next to my kitchen door and there were a couple of canes about 4 feet long last spring so I attached them to the house and it bloomed in July .I recently attached this years new canes some of which were 10 to 12 feet long should be lots of flowers next year.

Its got the making of an interesting winter that is for sure, Lots of snow in some areas already. What do you use as an e-reader, I have lots of e-books but don't like reading them on the computer and my paperback collection is almost finished, getting books here in the jungle is not that easy.

I use an iPad mini and the Amazon Kindle App I have and. e- reader by Kobo but I prefer the iPad because it is a bit larger. This is the earliest I've ever seen winter start here and Environment Canada said it would be unusually warm , might have know LOL.

Nice to see another snow storm at the cabin. I always enjoy those. I think seeing snow falling on the evergreens is one of the most beautiful sights ever. Angel, I hope you shared that sleeping bag. :)
