Hello John. Once MV Dali leaves US waters, she's gone. Tracking may be available until she gets to her destination. Then she goes publicly black. The next time you see her she will probably have a new name and flag. The maritime stigma will remain with the ship throughout the remainder of her useful life regardless of any covers. Superstition dies hard.

It’s actually pretty amazing what they can do with ships these days as most ships are actually constructed in large chunks so even with a refit or other reconfiguration of an existing vessel, it is often just the case of cutting something out and inserting something new. Cruise ships have modular cabins to ease this process as new technologies and features in accommodations evolve over time. Often these cabin sections have their own hot water and HVAC systems so it is basically a plug and play design. This isn’t even necessarily a new concept with modifying a ship due to damage. One only has to look at the RMS Olympic & others. Thank you so much for the updates and as for the bridge being a missing link for local travelers, I do think some sort of toll waiver and/or fixed mileage trip (school/work/home) reimbursement should be enacted.

Having a bow ready to go is standard practice as long as they have had time to build it (which they clearly did in this event). Multiple ships have had such replacements done. When I was in the US Navy (AOR-4) we had a collision with an aircraft carrier and one of our Underway Replenishment Control Stations was crunched badly. When we got back to Norfolk a month later a new Control Station building was sitting on the pier (complete with lights, internal wiring, and control panels with the right cutouts for the controls and instruments). The plant staff had already pulled out all of the cables and wiring, and all the controls from the control panels. They had shipyard workers cut the old station off in a day, and welded the new station back on the next day. It took several days to install the controls and instruments in the control station and run ships power to the junction box in the control station, and control cables for the winches and other things (shipyard electricians with minor assistance from ships staff). Then a few days to paint things. Done and fully tested in less than a week.

Ships owner would argue the bridge Protection Islands weren't built right to fend off ships from hitting the Bridge supports and that might be good enough to get the case thrown out and no one could class action sue for the accident without the state also being sued.

Even if the shipyard had confidence in the build accuracy, there is no doubt that the collapse of the bridge bent things. It is likely that measurements have already been made to determine where the cuts will be and how big the transition section will be. At this time, the amount of spring back when the bow is cut off is unknown. So, these measurements are more in the nature of preliminary estimates and scope of work planning. If there is a need to untwist the hull, that is a specialty. The choice of shipyard is more important than price. Fixing something that someone else has given up on may sound like this: Phase 2, remove 3/4 of phase 1 then proceed with the new plan. Something to be avoided.

Sir. Thanks for the video. I presume that most of the viewers are not mariners and do not know the time table of repairs. Dali has "disappeared"? No AIS signal.
@americanrambler4972Ай бұрын
Here is the big thing I think many are missing. We, the good old USA no longer had the infrastructure the dry docks or the capability to build or repair ships like the MV Dali. Even a big chunk of the technical capability and labor skills are now gone to do that job. China right now can stamp out modern ships the size of Dali and a whole lot bigger and more of them in one year than we can in fifteen years. Which at the end of the day means they will control world trade and soon will be able to dictate geopolitical terms of the sea because they will have the assets to do it and to replace anything they need in a fraction of the time we can. We currently don’t even have a 300 ship navy. And won’t have one in less than 10 years if at all. And we can’t even fix or maintain what we currently have without years and years of down time even to just get into the shipyard, then when we finally get in for service, instead of taking weeks or a few months, it’s going to take months and years to do just one ship! China now has a 400+ ship navy and it’s still growing rapidly. We for all practical purposes no longer have a merchant marine. The Chinese have one of the biggest of not the biggest one in the world.

@eddielane95692 ай бұрын
I'm surprised they're not holding the ship waiting for payment of the destroyed bridge and the lawsuits for the families of those who were killed. If they didn't receive any monies they could at least repair the ship and sell it to a local company but of course they would have to stay away from any place where that ship might be stolen back. They might could use the ship in the US military for some other purpose than what it was originally built for should they not be able to get any restitution. As far as replacing the bow that was my thought from the very beginning. That is something that the US military has done in the past. Submarine front sections that were damaged and front ship sections were replaced by mothballed ships and subs instead of rebuilding brand new front ship sections. They just cut off the damaged front and replace it with the front of another vessel and weld it on and do some interior repair work and then it's a lot quicker than having to rebuild everything from scratch. That way you get back to sea faster. Of course with this container ship they likely will have to rebuild it from new if they don't have an old one they could scrap and use the front of.
@briananderson8733Ай бұрын
Is anyone going to sue the builders and owners of the original bridge for failing to put up any form of protection around the posts or towers supporting each end of the bridge span. And what about the shippers of goods on the Dali when do they get their day vs Dali. It was NOT their fault Dali hit the bridge. When does the owners of the Dali and or the operators of the Dali face fault for the power outages and departing port with a dysfunctional ship. What about that pesky general average claim against the shippers. Explanations of GA tend to indicate it originated with cargo being sacrificed to protect other cargo and the ship. That does not appear to present in the case of Dali. And isn't there a person in the port that is responsible for clearing ships for departure evaluating their readiness to sail? He clearly failed.
