Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were the creators of this song but after Elvis died and Paul’s career was pretty much over, he went to Graceland, he said he was basically compelled to go to Graceland. When he read the information concerning Elvis’s career, he cried and cried and was renewed by the spirit of Elvis. He made a new album called Graceland and his career took off only without Art Garfunkel. Elvis can affect us with his power and grace if we let his music reach our hearts.

The original by Simon & Garfunkel is a masterpiece on its own, no question about that. But when I listen to Elvis singing it, it`s different because he walked the talk. He was a bridge over troubled water to so many that everybody lost count. He changed the lives of so many people with his numerous donations and financial help. But not only that, he helped people in many other ways. Singing a song beautifully is one thing. Singing and meaning it is something totally different.

Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel were the original artists, and did a beautiful job of recording this song. However, Elvis brings the power and emotion and soul into it that S&G could only ever hope to imagine. They pretty much, in their own words, admitted it themselves when they heard Elvis sing it.

Actually it expeessed his thoughts and feelings about the assassination of both MLK Jr and RFK. He sat around after rehearsals with a group of men and they discussed both tragic events. One of them left and wrote the song based on Elvis thoughts and feelings that he'd expressed that night.

The song was written by Paul Simon and Simon & Garfunkel released it in January of 1970. However, the King's version of Bridge Over Troubled Water left the writer of the track, Paul Simon, stunned. Speaking in 1972, he called the King's adaptation of the song "dramatic". He added: "But so was the song." "When I first heard Elvis perform Bridge Over Troubled Water it was unbelievable." (Via Rolling Stone) Simon added: "I thought to myself: 'How the hell can I compete with that?'" He went on to say he was happy he didn't have to continue the song's story with a "follow-up". The singer said: "From that point of view, I’m delighted that I didn’t have to write a Simon & Garfunkel follow-up to Bridge Over Troubled Water, which I think would have been an inevitable let-down for people." "It would have been hard on me, hard on both of us." Paul Simon later said that he went to Graceland after Elvis' death and he wasn't impressed at first during the tour but when they got to Elvis' grave he said he started crying. Simon asserts: “I came outside and there’s his grave and it said, ‘Elvis Presley whose music touched millions of people all around the world’, and I read that and I just started to cry, I mean this guy was loved by everybody.”

This popped up in my feed for some reason so I saw that you had an Elvis playlist and I just watched this one so I subscribed. I will watch the others when I get a chance. Simon and Garfunkel released Bridge Over Troubled Water in January of 1970 as a single from their fifth album. Elvis loved it and had released a version of it by June of that year. And then this performance is from November I think but definitely it's from 1970 in Vegas. Paul Simon attended one of the Vegas shows or perhaps it was the one in Madison Square Garden, but at any rate, apparently after watching Elvis perform this song, he said "Well that's it, we might as well all give up now!" 😂

It's a Simon & Garfunkel song. But Elvis'version is my favorite. He did a lot of covers. In this same concert he covered "You lost that loving feeling" by the Righteous Brothers and it's so good! Someone described it as 'When the Righteous Brothers sang it it was like they were in their feelings, sad over what they lost. But when Elvis sings it it's like he's saying "Hey girl, look what you lost" 😆

This was one performance from the entire filmed version of his 1970 Las Vegas concerts -- filmed by MGM over 6 different shows & came out on DVD. There is also a lot more to this man from his '68 Comeback TV special in black leather (a sit-down segment & a powerhouse stand-up segment), his fantastic 1972 Hampton Roads that can be seen in individual performances, & hundreds more. Pls be aware that he had the genetic condition A-1 antitrypsin causing COPD/emphysema & a liver ailment which began years earlier & needed an inhaler to help him breath, so how he managed night after night, year after year to belt out those songs is by some sort of a miracle. He was a powerhouse -- in his voice, in his performances, & in the emotion he gave from his soul & his gut & i believe that what made him more special was the emotion -- i don't know of anyone who poured out the emotion more than Elvis, & that goes for his upbeat songs also. Thanks.
