Stefan's girlfriend is already dead, you can see it as she dances with him. She might as well be dancing with Matt for all that it matters. Elena's heart is gone. The difference between her falling in love with Damon and acting on that love. She surrendered her heart to Damon in 3x19, that's why Damon is there to interrupt. You see this same thing at the prom when she has no humanity. "What heart?" Straight shot at Damon because he has her heart. If Stefan truly wanted to flip her switch, he should've had her dance with Damon. Fans may not see it, but 3x1 was Elena's signature moment with Damon, 3x5 was her signature moment with Stefan. Her fall and unfall. That's not to say she stopped loving Stefan because she didn't, but she loved him as a friend. Elena hides the truth of her love for Damon in her death and transition. That's why S4 dialogues fit to S3, and S3 dialogues fit to S4. When Katherine takes over Elena's body in S5... it's their way of showing what it truly looks like for Elena to be a completely different person. At this dance, she's acting like a completely different person because she's Damon's girlfriend. Her heart isn't in it, that's why she's dancing stiff as a board.

They ruined the show in the end. In all the drama the best thing about tvd was the family and friendship bonds , where they all used to fight together against everything. But in the end all of them fell apart.

"And it's not because I feel guilty that it happened. It's because I feel guilty that you don't know." Like their first kiss in 3x10, she didn't feel guilty about kissing Damon in Denver. Stefan didn't wanna hear what happened because he didn't care about her feelings. He cared about his own.

@@nobodysXghost The truth of this episode is shown at the prom in S4. Even though she went to this dance with Stefan, her heart was with Damon. She might as well have taken Matt for all that it mattered. Just look how stiff she is with Stefan as they dance. "What heart?" Then her heart shows up to interrupt lol. This dance is hugely tied to their prom. What it looks like as she dances with Stefan while her heart is with Damon... then what it looks like as she dances with Stefan without her humanity. It's intentional. No different than the sire bond interrupting her make-out session with Stefan in the woods because Damon isn't there to interrupt lol. The moment she surrendered her heart to Damon in 3x19, it was over for Stelena... and it shows. More so in scenes like this, when Stefan is trying to slow dance with Damon's girlfriend. They only let Stefan and Elena go so far because she is Damon's girlfriend. You can even see it when Stefan kisses her in 3x22. She didn't want him to kiss her, that's why she's not in it. The girl just tried to break up with him and he kissed her.

@@DDT-ei7bh that's also a very good point! since dancing is such an intentionally symbolic thing for delena it would be with stelena too. i think stefan's surprise when she says 'what heart' goes so deep because he is so good at deluding himself into thinking things are going well with elena and that she loves him. he just doesn't understand her just like he doesn't understand damon. since he is so good at controlling his emotions (opposite to damon, and not good at controlling his bloodlust unlike damon) it leads to him missing the depth of things. he is incapable of having a consuming love until he is able to change that about himself. i agree that she wanted to be true enough with herself to break up w him in 3x22, and was surprised that he would kiss her. because she didn't want him to and thought he would catch on to that, and wouldn't have the audacity to just ignore the fact that she has feelings for someone else and doesn't even know what went on. i think the shock at him kissing her is what changed her mind. it showed that he really did have hope for their relationship and showed her how much of a let down it would be for him-it quelled her guilt for loving damon. she was thinking, if he isn't upset with me for loving him, shouldn't i return the love? she saw it as him not being upset and being a form of love. when really he hadn't accepted her feelings for him, he was just denying it.

Uhm, no. A girl that refers to Stefan as "some guy she used to date" isn't dating said guy. She's going to the dance with him as friends. He's been by her side the entire time, yet she feels like she has no one, which speaks to the loneliness she feels without Damon. Stefan isn't enough for her.

Because they were in love. Stefan and Elena were a lot nicer on the surface, but the two weren't in love with each other. Not anymore. Deep inside, Elena was someone who craved adventure, passion, and even a little bit of danger, which was the reason for her troubles with Matt. She wanted to walk away, but then her parents died, and she was back in her emotional cage. In-comes Stefan, who consoles her during this vulnerable state, but as time progresses, scars fade, and Elena grew out of her grief too. She was inching closer and closer to becoming her truer self, which led her farther, and farther away from Stefan, and after she unexpectedly transitioned into a vampire, they were no longer compatible. Damon, on the other hand, was the adventure and passion Elena was looking for. The two had a great rapport. Damon was head over heels for her, and she too, was very much attracted to him while still with Stefan. being a vampire magnified all that (sire bond, which she eventually broke), and she chose Damon.

Because the right person is the one who completes you. I mean Elena was good with Stefan but she was wrong about many beliefs and her behavior was ingenuine pretending to be the right and inoccent girl...but that was fictional, unreal. Damon completed Elena's faults showing her that there are bad choices in the real world and Elena did the same with Damon, she completed him growing his humanity... That' is the real base for a true relationship
