Also I totally relate to what you said Damon about filming someone that then changes their mind once the video is posted because of how they 'look' and it is SO much work just thrown away. I have learned to get people I interview to sign a paper that said they were cool with being filmed bc it is just too many hours of editing to just take down a video.

I really enjoy seeing this “other side” of Nathaniel. I’ve watched his other videos a year ago and always got the impression he was just super serious, but seeing his goofy side in one of your other videos and hearing him speak here was insightful. It made me realize that being a KZbinr/influencer can be difficult when you try to choose a theme for your channel and end up unintentionally typecasting yourself. How people present themselves is only just a part of who they really are and it’s good to hear that Nate wants to branch out past that “serious” persona on his channel.

The fear that a joke doesn’t land, we seem boring (to Nathaniel’s point about entertainment), the fear that we say something wrong etc. We all need that confidence to be open that you have Damon! 🤗 I love the idea of openness: the community, connection and education we get from it is so important - but I have to say, it’s def. scary to put yourself out there!

I feel like there's a difference between wanting to keep a part of yourself private and not being authentic to the world. Sometimes when we're going through certain issues, we need to process alone and mentally take the time to understand our own thoughts and feelings. I often regret things I say (in more serious/deep conversations) when I don't really think about it first for a while. I also think that everyone has multiple facets to who they are, so in that sense idk if I really believe in one true "authentic self".

People might not realise how they are perceived by others until they see themselves in your videos. They might feel uncomfortable about the way they act (but didn't know how they acted until they saw themselves through your [literal] lens). People might be uncomfortable because you have a big audience. I might be comfortable saying something amongst friends, but not comfortable sharing it with 235K subscribers. If you ask "but why?" then you are coming from a place of privilege, where you can act how you like without consequences. But even still, it's not your place to question why people aren't comfortable sharing themselves. It should be respected no matter what. A conversation, people's lives, don't have to turn into content for consumption.
@worldwithout13564 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If someone doesn't feel comfortable sharing certain details with people they don't know it doesn't make them any less authentic. It's just what they're comfortable with and we all choose the degree to which we are comfortable. I think that's acceptable and shouldn't require an explanation.

But that‘s what these talks are about. Opening up. Given, if he went up to an aquaintance and asked them a personal question with a camera to their face, they answer and he posts it that‘d be different. Honestly, i used to think my persona was the better part of me, then i hated it so much i wanted to be myself and just me, but after i’ve read and listened to soo many philosophers i see where i was wrong. Your Persona / Online Image could be a good thing, it could be an inspiration for other people. And its to know what IS your persona. That way you know when you’re acting as your ego or not. Because yourself isn’t just one, there’s the persona - shadow - ego.
