I don't think I've listened to this in over a decade. Its like seeing an old friend you haven't talked to in years but picking up right where you left off.

The main samples are taken from Starman Original Soundtrack, composed by Jack Nitzsche. Samples are taken from a replayed version by The City of Prague orchestra. Dan Black sampled the main theme, and some choirs. Check the video "Starman Theme" on youtube.

@sickboy2774 Well that's mostly true, it's lifted from a tribute album of classic sci-fi themes, this being a slightly reworked adaptation of the original piece of Jack Nitzsche score by Nic Raine & The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

For two, this guy Dan Black is good like all good artist which the best song is when people take a song as a sub-conscious rhetorical meaning, -meaning you can take the song as you want and make your meaning out of it no matter what the artist was going for. You can usually go by the chorus for a meaning in simple hook songs, a la Rihanna and many more.

I really like the song, I think the lyrical text in video is done comparably well in Royksopp's Happy Up Here (please comment if you disagree) I felt that sometimes because the text was inconsistent in which lyrics were shown or left out, it felt as if some lines were being turned into gimmicks.

I really like this. This track's been around longer than people think. As for the whole rihanna umbrella drums 'thing' people mention. Well, rihanna wasn't the first either - besides which, how many tracks have similar drum riffs to each other. Without going over the top, drum sequences aren't really infinite, unless of course you wanted to make something a mess just so it's 'unique'. Love the editing of the starman theme for the sample too. I'd forgotten it. Just take a track for what it is.

@judemunkey360 It was the theme song to a movie titled Starman by John Carpenter and has been called Starman theme, not Symphonies. And I'm sure Dan Black has permission to use it since it has gotten airplay and I haven't read about any lawsuits against him. And besides, it's not a complete rip-off if it's not the entire song used, just a sample.

@judemunkey360 It's called sampling. He also sampled Rhianna's Unbrella drum beat. He didn't "Rip it off", he asked permission and was given it.
@hillsizz15 жыл бұрын
it's not stealing. if you see his podcasts, he full heartedly admits he took beats from these songs. he was inspired by them. nothin wrong with that. and made some really good songs from it.
@hiyasta198115 жыл бұрын
But the beat (of Umbrella and Simphonies) is just a drum loop from the Apple music-software program GarageBand (Vintage Funk Kit 03)... So there is no "robbery"...

Sampling is a huge part of the commercial music industry, like it or not. At least a 1/3 of the songs you've heard in your lifetime have some type of sampling or interpolation involved. Its accepted amongst music cohorts and its peers. The only people who can't seem to accept are the ones who are naive about the art, that is until they realize one of their favorite songs used some form of sampling. Who cares how the song was made? It can still be performed with live instrumentation.

But Dan Black is hip hop influenced, the original lyrics to this song were from the son hypnotize by biggie smalls. It doesnt matter if other genres use samples, its just that most people would associate it with hip hop, and btw the producer of Madonna's hung up has also produced songs by Missy Elliot and thus you could argue that there was a hip hop influence in the production of that song.
