I'm conservative, raised catholic and have zero respect for the catholic church, especially with regard to protecting children. I believe in marriage equality, if for no other reason than the legal status it affords, which i think every person is entitled to. Want to get out of the whole "marriage" argument? Have the states issue domestic partnership licenses instead of marriage licenses for the legal element that marriage currently affords. Bam!!! Now the government is out of the marriage business alltogether.

I wish more people could understand the simplicity and trueness of your argument. Marriage is a legal status in this country, period. If you want to add a religious element to it, that's your prerogative. But in the country as a whole, it's a legal issue, not a religious one. Your suggestion as a solution is 100% on the money, and only those blinded by religious beliefs and not guided by love and respect for others can't see it. I'm sorry but that's the truth.

Nonetheless, in our legal system as presently constituted, marriage is simply a legal contract, an association, a partnership, freely entered into between two adult individuals, as prescribed by law. That's why when those individuals decide to dissolve their association/partnership, aka divorce, there are parameters of the rights and obligations as dictated by our laws. Religious beliefs play no part on this. That's why the gender of the individuals is irrelevant. Again, you might choose to see marriage through the lense of your religious beliefs, as you're freely entitled to. But that doesn't have any legal significance. As such, nobody has the right to impose into others their POV, and the gender of the individuals entering into that association shouldn't be a prerequisite to the legal benefits and protections that creating such association bestows. Therefore, instead of issuing marriage licenses, the government ought to issue civil union or domestic partnership licenses or certificates. That's the most practical solution since when couples divorce what they do is dissolve their legal association/partnership. It's rather simple and logical, not to mention the fair and right thing to do, instead of imposing on everyone our religious POV. That association might as well be an institution and pilar of great importance to society, in that I agree with you. However, that's a sociological opinion, not a legal one, and the gender of the participants doesn't negate its importance. Ergo, if we are all equal under the law, then whichever two individuals decide to enter willingly or to create a lawful union/association/partnership domestically as a couple, should have the right/ability to do so irrespective of their gender, with all the benefits and protections that such arrangements bestow. Otherwise, it would be intolerance and discrimination born of religious beliefs. It is very straightforward. Cheers.

Could watch these two all night! I've loved Dan Savage since his very first advice column, and he's one of the few people who's crude, authentic mouth can leave Bill Maher speechless. If anyone here is unfamiliar how he DESTROYED Rick Santorum's political aspirations, it was a thing of nasty beauty.
