I'm sharing some things I've been decluttering as I unpack more boxes, and it's getting easier and easier to declutter. Even things that I once thought I couldn't possibly declutter were easy to stick in the Donate Box.

You actually saved my life and my husband's life and our 3 cats and a dog. A wind storm knocked down a neighbor's tree. The tree pulled down our electric and the wet ground caused a surge. Our garage caught on fire! 🔥 My husband was able to get to the fire to put it out because there was no junk in the way. The fire department was all over our house making sure the fire was out. They could easily get through because my stuff was decluttered. The weird me was also relieved that for once strangers were in my house and I was not mortified. It was huge. Thank you a thousand times!!!!

Celeste, I'm so happy for you that this turned out well! I kept smelling a burning smell in our garage (packed with boxes and junk). My husband has a much keener sense of smell, and he smelled it too. So, we had to call the fire department to come check it out. I can still feel the embarrassment. It was our hot water heater that needed to be replaced, thankfully not a fire.

Lately I’ve been telling myself it’s OKAY to get rid of stuff for the sole reason that I WANT A NEW ONE. It doesn’t have to be broken, it doesn’t have to be worn out. It’s okay if it’s outdated, or ugly, or just slightly more worn than I would like, out of style. I give myself permission to have things the way I want them. (Assuming it’s within budget and reasonable decisions).

I can attest to the momentum effect. I have been able to purge items that I held onto since my mother died 28 years ago- because they belonged to her. Mind you, I have plenty of things to remind me of her, plenty of things she actually made, things I enjoy seeing. But these were items stored in a box or two that were tied to sad memories. I have no explanation for why all of a sudden I was able to donate these lovely items that once seemed nonnegotiable keepers! Except for the momentum you describe from enjoying the feeling of less stuff and more space for the stuff I actually use and need!

I finally realized that just because I like something (or sometimes even LOVE something) doesn't mean I have to own it. It is okay to enjoy something and then let it go. I'm not going through the hassle of selling stuff and the higher value of some items made me think I should hold onto them. Why? Donating treasures means someone else can use, enjoy, and love them too. Also, the container rule has really helped me as I unpack my kitchen. I used to have 2 drawers to hold veggie peelers, ice cream scoops, etc. Now I have one. What does that mean? Make some choices. I have a dumpster truck coming on Thursday to clean out what was left from construction (and what is just gross), and a donation truck coming on Friday. Heck yeah, I have momentum :). Thank you for the continued inspiration.

I've hit that point of momentum too. I started two years ago when Covid hit and I needed the sanity and peace in our 24/7 home! I'm on my second pass in most places, third in some. Now we are planning to downsize to less than half our sq. ft. space and it's not daunting! The Moving Coordinator from the senior housing we are going to visited us and was amazed at how uncluttered and "sane" our home is! She said she sees some houses where the job will be overwhelming and there may be a short time to fit it in. With us, she said, she won't have to do anywhere near as much advising. She said I could probably take over the seminars she does for future residents on decluttering. (I HOPE she was kidding!) Almost everything I've done I learned from you Dana. Thanks so, so, so much!! ❤

I retired in mid-January and now have time for serious decluttering. Two months in, I am finally feeling momentum. I try to fill one large trash bag every week (my usual volume was a small plastic grocery bag's worth). I've taken four loads of miscellaneous "stuff" to the Salvation Army store; the next donation box is always set up. My big boost came from getting rid of two 36" shelves of photo albums. It took about 6-weeks, including some 10-12 hour days, to scan and label all the prints, brochures and ticket stubs, but I finally finished two days ago. The prints are now in photo-safe boxes that take up about 20% of the space. Although when it comes to books and the newspaper I strongly prefer actual paper, I've realized since the digital camera age that I prefer digital photos. The scanning was tedious, but in the process I re-lived fabulous trips and fun times, and I've been able to easily share photos with friends and family, which has led to some nice exchanges. Creating space in my bookcase allowed me to clear some surfaces in my guestroom/office. I've even found a place for the iron and related clutter so I could stash the ironing board but still pull it out easily when I need it (which, since working from home during the pandemic and now retiring, is, thankfully, a LOT less often). I'm sure the momentum will ebb and flow, but this initial burst is great incentive to keep at it.

I did the same. Ditched all my parents' old albums, threw out a ton of meaningless (to me) photos, scanned the best for my digital frame, and organized the best photos into photo boxes. Did I really want my mom's old prom photos with some guy, not my dad? No. Do I need random black and white photos of Korean towns my Dad took when he was in the service? No. Do I need old postcards? No. The photos had to be container-worthy.

Congratulations on getting that done!! I really need to do this but I have so many family photos (mine and inherited from other relatives) that I’m stuck on how to most efficiently do this since it will take so much time (that I do not have)!! What process did you use to scan the photos?
@jaindeau772
@jaindeau772 2 жыл бұрын
@@missyl4621 I started with an Epson V370 flatbed scanner. They don’t make that model anymore, so when I wore that one out (my third in about 8 years), I was forced to “upgrade” to the V600, which is twice the price ($249) but doesn’t have any features I need that the cheaper model didn’t. I also have slides and negatives to digitize, which is why I chose those models. If you have only prints, your printer/copier/scanner is probably perfectly fine, as long as you can set the dpi to at least 300. I did my earliest scans (years ago) on an $89 HP three-in-one with good results, but I didn’t change the default resolution from 200 dpi, so those images aren’t as good when shown on a big screen. The Epson flatbeds will scan two prints at once, which speeds the process. I never tried more than one on my old HP, so I don’t know if it would work. The Epson software has a “color restoration” option that greatly improved many faded or discolored photos and slides without the need for photoshop or a similar program (which I’ve never tried). It can get tedious, but reliving memories can be really enjoyable, and I’ve been thrilled with the results. I think friends and family with whom I’ve shared the scans are also very appreciative. One tip: organize your photos into the order you want them before you start scanning and scan them in that order (I wanted them as close to chronological as possible). That facilitates batch labeling. [In Windows10, Select the group you want to label, right click and choose ‘rename.’] it’s also really helpful to decided on a file name protocol before you start. Since I want my photos to fall chronologically, I first name all files with Year MonthDay - e.g. 2022 3mar31 for March 31 2022.
@jaindeau772
@jaindeau772 2 жыл бұрын
@@missyl4621 BTW, I first started scanning for Christmas gifts for my siblings. For years we’ve tried to keep to very-low-cost, “non-dustable” gifts (usually consumable treats). I had custody of the family print photos and decided to scan photos from all our family Christmases, and gave everyone a CD. Then I kept going, and over the years did all the family prints and other documents, then slides. Getting rid of my albums was the last project, I thought. Until, as part of my general decluttering, I recently came upon a stash of old black-and-white negatives. I don’t think I’ll have to worry about getting bored in retirement!

The #1 thing that I’ve learned to do that actually helps me get through any item on my to-do list is this...list the time I think it will reasonably take me to do the task. If I’m not sure, I time myself and then I’ll know for future lists. The #2 thing is to not overwhelm myself with more than 3 tasks in the day. I can always add more later if I want to. If I don’t get the item done on the list, it moves to the next day. (I’ve got one item than has moved for 3 days now. Snails think I’m slow🤣)

Broken or cracked dishes are something I will not hang onto. My mother made us eat and drink from broken, and cracked dishes and sometimes my hubs doesn't understand he tells me it is still usable and can't stand to keep it. I wish that I could be that brutal on other things that I want to declutter but emotions take over. I agree the more I work on this the less sentimental i am. Loved this video today as I want to downsize to a smaller place and I am telling self I will not move and then decide. No rather take less and see if I can live with less.

So true! When you have the momentum….get ‘er done! However, this winter sucked. Our temps were -40 C a lot of the winter and we still have tons of snow. So, as you always say get it out of your house …. Well here it’s all piled in my dining room waiting to not freeze our butts off taking soooooo much stuff to our recycling centre. Finally, tomorrow, it’s supposed to be pretty nice 7C and what happens, my car is now in the shop and going to cost me thousands of dollars. Ugh. So now I’m waiting again. At least I got pretty much every room in my house including closets done except for one. Woo hoo!! So exciting! Thanks to you for all your inspiration to get out of my depression from my father in laws passing (I looked after him for years so it was extremely hard on me) and my house got neglected and I was physically and mentally exhausted So I’m soooo grateful for you Dana. I am in a state of decluttering momentum too! After clearing out my DOOM room, aka the spare bedroom, I decluttered my office. I just finished that and am ready to tackle the garage and basement chaos. That is procrastination station, but I'm ready to deal with it now that I have seen and felt the power of less in my spaces. Yesterday I went up into the attic and dragged down multiple boxes that belong to two of my boys ages 16 and 18, took out the trash, duhs (can we say...single flip flop), and easy stuff like pens and pencils. I told them to go through it and keep what they wished. The eldest said since he did not remember what was in his boxes to just get rid of them. He said, This family (extended, not just us necessarily) has an issue with hoarding, and I just don't want it. So I am giving away all of it except his trophies and drawings which I actually knew he would want. He had fun last night comparing his old drawings to what he is able to do now 8 years later. And he enjoyed putting the trophies next to his more recent ones. My goal is to one day have an empty attic.

I just went through this the last 4 days. Someone offered to help fix my bathroom at affordable cost. This is our only bathroom. They scraped all the texture off the ceiling and touched up some areas with mud and then primed it and painted it. As much as I'm really excited it got done and it turned out beautiful cleaning my whole entire bathroom every single day to keep the dust down until we could use a toilet I deal with muscle and joint pain it was horrible but I did it. What I ended up using was a washable mop head I have two of them and I switched out the mop heads and I use them to wash my walls to get the dust off and it worked. So he was trying to relate to your counter. I just want to say I'm so thankful for everything you share you inspire me

I simply took the whole pile and donated, it was huge for me. I think that moving house or clean it up for tenants is the best way to push you to get rid of things.

Yes, I've been working on kitchen cabinets and have a container with coke bottle caps . . . several years worth . . . I used to input the codes and elect that the money be donated to my son's school. I'm not even going to waste my brain power of trying to figure out how long it's been. It's over my clutter threshold to deal with them now, so trash.

We are moving. I have done soo well for a month. I have found things I have been looking for, for years. I have thrown away tons and donated more. Yesterday I walked into a room I have not touched in 5 years. OMG!! I am still in tears. I feel so defeated and I have not started in there yet. I am once again paralyzed!!!

@jillianguilford5191 2 жыл бұрын
Take a breath. Congratulate yourself on what has been accomplished. Get a trash bag, a box for donations - go inside the room and begin. The reality is this: there is simply more to do and it's in this room. It doesn't mean anything about you. You have done good work and you will do good work in this space. Begin the reclaiming process.
@darleneh608
@darleneh608 2 жыл бұрын
Might be an easier room to do, right? I mean, you haven't touched anything there in five years, so it's not like there's going to be much there that you need.

Be encouraged! You are now "practiced" and "up and running" with your new decluttering skill. You will be able for this room. Take out a box at a time into a calmer space and you'll fly through Dana's 5 steps. Every blessing to you. G Ire

Moved here 10 years ago, still have dozens of boxes and bins in my quonset hut. My goal, is to get through them in the next month. Then I have 2 storage units to empty - all furniture and stuff from my sister's house that I couldn't decide about when I emptied it after I inherited it. I gave away and donated 80%, yet still have those 2 storage units.. just could not make more decisions at the time. After 7 years and thousands of dollars in rental fees, it is time. That will be my next project. It is hard, physically and mentally.

I decluttered so much (mostly paperwork) from my pass-through kitchen bar. Then I could see the piles in the kitchen no longer being blocked by the bar clutter. Hmmm. Too many appliances on the counters. Then even the placemats looked like clutter and had to go. Yep. Declutter momentum IS a thing. P.S. No ending credits? 😱😆

I got rid of a ton of housing decor four years ago. It was just too annoying. I don't like stuff in the way and if I'm storing it, what's the point? I have no tabletop frames, I don't mind stuff up on the wall but don't need stuff in the way in the counters and stuff. Good talk!

I bumped into this video because I am working on working on decluttering. I am interested in the photo album you said large photos will go in. Do you have a link? I have a huge volume of photos I need to go through and organize and cull. Many are precious photos of my deceased mother and her family and my family. So far enjoying your video on momentum.

Great video! I have a question. A couple of years ago I really began toward a minimalist life, then the pandemic hit and it has become more difficult to get items as well as inflation. I began prepping for future so now I’m hung in between wanting to get rid of most of my belongings vs inability to get items/cost increase and should I keep?? Your thoughts please???

TRUTH! If you listen to people who study these things....hard times are coming. I struggle with this too, so I am working on keeping essentials and trying to let go of some things, not all, that aren't so practical. The economy is a major concern looking ahead. God bless!

This is a great question. All of us are dealing with this issue in varying degrees. My personal take on it is if we follow Dana's advice and get rid of the trash, put the misplaced things where they belong and DUH-donate the things we obviously don't need, we are making our space better. Your question raises a lot of issues. Thanks for posting it and giving the food for thought.

I have literally thought of this myself. But really we don’t need to be living in clutter to survive rough times. Here are some funny thoughts I on the fly thought of just now, to lighten the mood. Tongue in cheek… we could ask these silly questions ourselves when decluttering with apocalyptic thinking in mind is #1 ” Will I need all 5 of these random vases if the dollar loses it’s value?” Or # 2 “ Will I need this entire stack of quilting magazines if I need to sew blankets and live like Laura Ingalls-Wilder?” Or #3 “ If the zombies come for me is there room in the cupboards or closets for my family to hide in there ?” 😁 Happy decluttering, y’all! 😁
