Actually, and narratively, Nanaya is a finger maiden of the three fingers. She wanted Midra to endure so that his suffering is prolonged and in so doing fill himself with infantile hate--the hate that the world should burn because of one's own unjust suffering which is a pre-requisite for one to be reduced to madness. Much like how the wronged merchant caravan locked beneath Leyndell were filled with hate because of Shabriri's lies and whose unjust suffering pushed them to accept the Flame of Frenzy. Nanaya wanted Midra to be filled with hate and for him to one day become a Lord of the Frenzied Flame not unlike the spine of the failed lord she guided before him. Why would the hornsent inquisitors let this happen? why not execute him like the rest of the mansions inhabitants? why let him suffer to become a Lord of Frenzy? Wouldn't it make more sense that Midra was already becoming the Lord of Frenzy but the inquisitors stopped him, but couldn't kill him because that would release the Lord, so instead they tortured Nanaya with their barbs into cursing Midra to prevent him from ever giving into the suffering.

The woods are decently spooky, but also boring unfortunately. After you figure out the gimmick with the winter lanterns all the tense in the area is gone and it just becomes a slow trek to the manse. I was personally expecting to run into a mini boss around the Split Falls area or something, but no just rats. Lots and lots of frenzy rats...

@@RevulsiveLooper definitely. It was horrifying at first when Torrent refused to be summoned and the ominous messages but it was because you're still unsure what's in the woods at first. It wears off after you've became accustomed to it. Though the atmosphere is top-notch, it just needed more enemies besides the rats and the inquisitor enemies. As it is, it couldn't maintain the tension and dread. I honestly thought that there would be a stalker-type enemy like Mr X from Resident Evil hunting you down while you're in the woods. Being in a dark wood is scary enough but imagine if there was someone stalking you in those woods, that would be utterly terrifying.

I was looking for someone to mention this. The King in Yellow being directly implemented, though not directly named, into Elden Ring is just so awesome. I know they have used other Outer Gods as well in games like Demon's Souls and then just making a game entirely for the HP lore like Bloodborne is so cool. Would be great to see them dive completely in again with the HP lore like they did with Bloodborne.

Interesting that the reason Torrent refuses to be summoned in the woods is because he feels vulnerable to permadeath in there. Poor horse must be terrified in the Frenzied Flame ending where Melina recovers him, and now there's nowhere to hide from the flame in the Lands Between.

Granted, Sword of Damnation is an awesome GS. It has thrusting attack on the heavies as well after rolling. Not to mention the AoW is crazily good!

@@andras_baka that sword is absolutely busted in PvP, if you get caught by the full animation is pretty much a 1 shot unless you are fully stacked with holy res. But to OPs comment, I think the main reason they don't want other faster weapons to have frenzy buildup is because they'd be overpowered lol. Vykes works because its hella slow and it's easy to parry, dodge and even side step but a weapon that swings laterally and at a much faster rate would absolutely destroy in PVP.

to be fair the weapon itself is not frenzy related, even in the boss fight, the weapon itself does no frenzy damage, only midras flames. It was the weapon midra was executed with, not a weapon of the frenzied flame. although i agree it would be cool to get more frenzy weapons

I assumed that Nanaya was Midra’s finger maiden. Like Hyetta was for us. This means that they became a voice or avatar of the frenzied flame (or maybe Shabriri?). That would make Nayata’s final words “Endure” so fucked since it was all so Midra could suffer for being too weak or possibly for no reason at all.

I mean, technically the tarnished defeated Hoarah Loux the fisrt elden Lord, Dragonlord Placidusax, a lot of ancient dragons, all of Marika's offspring and Marika herself, the Elden Beast and a couple of other Gods along the way, sooooooooooooo not the worst we could face off! Also, spoilers: Radahn in his prime WITH a god. The only type of beings that we have not killed yet are the Outer Gods themselves, otherwise if it bleeds we can kill'em.

Funny that the Frenzy always comes down to Love, Vyke had the same fate believing that the frenzy would save his Maiden only to be consumed by it. Midra endured infinite frenzy pain believing in Nanaya’s words to keep going, only to succumb to it and being killed by us

That’s exactly what nanayas torch is. It’s the flamehead and spinal cord of a former person who tried to become the lord of frenzy but died in the process. I think the tarnished in the end of the Frenzied ending is the only one who can truly become the lord

After playing through the Abyssal Woods bit, it seems like it would/should be appropriate to lose the ability/privilege of riding Torrent after you inherit the frenzied flame from the three fingers. It would place that added emphasis on the horrific choice you’ve made.

One of my favorite bosses for sure. Like in the whole game I mean not just the dlc. I love the Frenzied Flame. As a concept it’s very strange and almost H.P. Lovecraft like. It’s a primordial flame that is embodiment of chaos in this world. The outer god who commands this flame we don’t know. We don’t know who’s in control of it all we know is that it wants to destroy the world. Literally “May chaos take the world” is the phrase everyone who’s been afflicted says. It is fair, it is indiscriminate, it is without reason. It just IS. Like a law if the universe. Just as there is order in the 2 fingers…there’s chaos in the three fingers. Inherently uneven. It’s only law is to destroy, burn and wither away ALL THINGS. We cannot comprehend the Frenzied Flame and it is uncontrollable. This is why we are hit with madness when we are hit by it. Absolutely insane I love the Frenzied Flame. And I’m so so glad we finally got a boss fight dedicated to it! They so nice to even give a new move aswell and some new weapons too. 10/10 boss with 10/10 lore.

@@grs3ntinel the Frenzied Flame itself, like the 3 fingers, is a tool for The Outer Gods ends. That flame is how The Outer God destroys all and I truly mean ALL. Not even spirits are exempt from the rule. The three fingers are to choose the lord of chaos. It’s chosen who will destroy everything. This is ending we see in the Frenzied Flame ending. We are chosen by the three fingers and blessed with the power of frenzied flame. With that power once we kill the Elden beast. We destroy everything and I truly mean everything. The Erdtree, The Lands Between, life itself. Everything is burned away. And this is that Outer Gods will. It’s purpose is to destroy. Much like how the Outer God that brought the Elden Ring is to bring order. The Outer Gods are like fundamentals of the universe. An Outer God of order, of chaos, and so on and so forth. Kinda crazy right.

This was the boss I felt most bad for. Dude was suffering for hundreds of years, unable to die, his wife already dead and unable to comfort him. Then we invade his mansion and start beating him up, it was the straw that broke the camel's back and he unleashed the horrors kept at bay. The only silver lining is that we end his suffering right there and then

If you wanna follow the source material to Lovecraft, I think of it as an old one actually viewing our world. Generally old gods and old ones are disconnected from the physical, really only giving influence (sometimes unintentionally). I see his head as a literal eye of something we can never understand peeking through the gaps into our realm. Really cool to think about. Not like a puppet, but a lens.

The Abyssal Woods and the boss’s manor are my favorite environments that FromSoft has ever created. The amount of detail that’s gone into curating a terrifying and truly ominous game level is just remarkable to me. The un-killable eye enemies make stealth and hiding an actually necessary and super suspenseful gameplay mechanic. The root overgrowth and dilapidated structures make the areas feel like a place that was forgotten/hidden away to conceal something. The overall tone of the level struck the same chord as Bloodborne for me, but they were able to create that feeling in an open world, where the players freedom of movement and progression isn’t as linear/confined, which I feel like is more difficult to pull off.

My buddy's favorite ending is the frenzied flame one and he went full conspiracy theorist throughout the DLC every time he saw anything even vaguely resembling a frenzied flame because he wanted it to be tied to the DLC somehow. Cue the Abyssal Woods and he starts flipping out over wanting to fight a lord of frenzied flame. Then this boss happened and we both popped the f off.

I think it's more likely that the madness corrupting the woods is a result of Midra's meddling with the frenzied flame. The lanterns are likely some of the hornsent who were sent to kill him and were the most tainted by its influence. Also, Nanaya was likely the one who convinced him to start messing with it in the first place. Notice how she has a blindfold on just like the frenzied maiden we meet. She was likely sent by Shabriri or someone else to influence him.

The abyssal woods is clearly where torrent was marred by fire since frenzy flame can burn even the soul and, y’know, the entire landscape seems to have been scorched at least once before. Even in the lands between where frenzy has dwelled for a long time the environment remains mostly unchanged, so I doubt the winter lantern flies changed the ecosystem because the only thing similar we see is Leyndell in the FF ending. That would explain why Torrent is afraid to be summoned there, poor steed is traumatized from what happened to him in the abyss, but what I don’t understand is if Midra only just became the lord of frenzied flame when we fight him then how is everything already burnt? I know item descriptions say that others have tried and failed just like Midra, but in the end he kinda succeeded when he gave in to madness, did he not? I feel like his suffering, not his body, is what wasn’t strong enough for him to become lord. So who burnt the abyss? Why? How long ago was it? Because now, even the flowers glow with frenzy, species have evolved to coexist with frenzy inside themselves and the cracks in the land shine a sickening yellow and red where embers yet burn. Again I ask the question. Who did this?

Frenzy Flame lore is the best lore imo, I love how it creeps into every aspect of the story. I was over the moon that we got so much new Frenzy items and weapons and a whole fight against a lord to boot. The only thing I could really ask for is to have an item like the lamenter head or rock heart where you can transform into a mini frenzy lord with a flame head, the form could give you immunity to madness making using frenzy spells much more advantageous

I think, truly, when you fight him. Midra tries to fight you off only to distract you until you hear… It was a Howl. A Howl worse than Shabrari’s. It was a Howl of Love brought to the brink. A Midra’s Howl. Shabriri may have been the “father” of Madness. But he would not/can not anymore feel this.

I thought even though the place was kind of empty, the abyssal woods was a masterpiece. The fact that the map description says it’s forbidden, and then the scary messages and frenzied animals in the woods. The frenzy flame on the rocks, I thought the place was gonna be another one of Miyazakis infamous poison swamps but it wasn’t. Another lore heavy thing was the fact you couldn’t use torrent cause the horse that let you ride it to fight a huge fire giant and now a god (Elden beast) is too scared to be summoned in this place. It could be darker of a location, seemed too bright to be untouched by sunlight, and could use more stuff in the location like armor and even a summon, but just the lore of it and midra was good. 9/10, just needed more content within it

He was probably deemed too weak to keep it in check, which could explain the destruction to the woods. Basically he was too weak to control it, and had to keep it in check because it was destroying everything.

Incredible boss fight. I won't lie, though. When he first attacks you, before taking the sword out of himself, it felt like I was up against the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail after he had his limbs removed. "You're a loony" is quite appropriate for the situation as well. It was a hilarious moment.

Being the lord of the frenzy flame should have some implications for this fight, maybe making you inmune to madness (you are already the most mad guy ever) or mandness buffs your attack power ever time it procs

About that... If you golden parry the aged ones (the guys that grab you and kill you with madness on your way there) and kill them, they'll drop a talisman that buffs your attack power when madness occurs nearby (including you)
