GarageBand for iOS 10 / 11: Connecting real keyboards to iOS

Here's a brief demo of how a real keyboard can really augment the already excellent sounds available on GarageBand.
ALWAYS BUY GENUINE APPLE camera kits!!!!
Cheapy ones simply will not function, and for an extra £20, you can have one that will work every time! I realise that there's been a bit of controversy over old camera kits not working any more on newer iOS, but I only bought mine last week and it works well.

Great. Can you explain how you have your connections between iOS and keyboard exactly? Could you use audio out from keyboard to iPad too?

The keyboard USB out goes to the camera connection kit which you can get from Apple. Recording audio outputs into the input of the iPad requires an audio interface. The Focusrite 2i2 is very good for iOS!

@@DanBakerMusic Another question: Recording keyboards via USB MIDI seems the way to go, given the editing abilities. I have a Presonus Audiobox that I am trying to hook up but now I'm questioning why I would even record my digital piano that way, especially if I can convert the MIDI file later?

Agreed on the Camera Kit... the one to look for is the Apple USB3 CCK, which takes a USB input *and* a Lightning cable, so it can charge the iPad at the same time you are running USB into it.

Dan, is it possible to split the GB piano into two parts by setting a split point, with upright bass on the left side of the split, and grand piano on the right side of split, and be able to control volumes of each instruments? You and Pete Johns are the best!

Hi Dan , do you need a USB hub to run the small 25 note mini keyboard , Or will the ipad power it thru the camera kit ? , also if using a audio interface into the ipad so I could use a condenser mic is there one that will work without a USB hub ? I have just purchased an ipad and starting to use garage band and have to say your channel is just great at showing all the demos and how to do videos , top channel , glad I came across it. Thanks again.

Hi Kenny, you don't generally need power for the tiny keyboards, but definitely for the bigger ones. With regard to audio interfaces, anything that has phantom power to supply higher quality condenser mics will definitely need external power, but there are smaller plugin devices that don't.

Hi Scott-it's a 5th generation iPad (not the pro) with 128 GB storage...

Thanks. I was considering the 5th gen with 32gb. But that may not have adequate storage space.
