Chords in a Minor Key - Many Possibilities...

Following on from my major chords video, here:

Here is a video about minor keys and the chords contained within it. As there are a few minor scales, the number of chords that can be used is quite considerable:
i, ii dim, bIII, IV, iv, V, v, bVI, vi dim and VII.
In C minor, this would be Cm, D dim, Eb, F, Fm, G, Gm, Ab, Adim and Bb.
Ten chords.... and that’s before any modulations (changes of key).
In this video, I look at the tune Hotel California, with its many possibilities. Seven of the ten chords listed here are used.

In your previous chords of a major key video, you explained the derivation of the diatonic chords, tossed out the diminished seventh (with your furrowed brow,) and added the flattened 3rd, 6th, and 7th chords borrowed from the blues idiom. In a minor key, you go the other way, preferring a diminished triad as the 2nd chord instead of a major triad. If we were in the relative major key of Eb, you would be tossing out a Ddim but in the minor key of Cm, you prefer the chord to be Ddim. Furthermore, you add diminished chords for the natural 6th and 7th degrees when dealing with a minor key. Why does the natural seventh degree, as a diminished triad, sound clunky in a major key, but is considered a good sounding chord in a minor key? Why does the natural sixth degree sound good as a diminished triad as well? Thank you for this, and all of your videos. They give me lots to think about!

3:46 That choice of a 2-chord seems tricky: The diatonic choice would be Ddim (D F Ab.) D-minor (D F A) sort of works because of the inclusion of all chromatic notes above the fifth degree but you did not like that one so much. D-major (D F# A) really doesn't work because F# is outside the key of C-minor. You settle on Ddim as the best choice for the second degree, even though you (and hundreds of years of musical tradition) consider this a clunky chord when taken in the context of the natural seventh degreee in the key of Eb major.

Because of the blues, there are so many more possibilities with regard to chords. Yes, I suppose I prefer specific chords, but that’s only my take...
