tbh booktube has NEEEEVERRRR felt like a community to me/i never felt included when i still posted. i'm too gay, my accent is too thick, i live in a country that will never match the aesthetic that this space expects at this point, and the viewership & the algorithm have never let me forget that. i stopped creating content at the beginning of this year because i was so tired of it. booktube is more exclusive than inclusive in so many ways. I'll be cheering y'all on regardless tho!!! sending love as always. ❤❤

I mostly watch Black Ytbers and a lot of them (Bookish Realm, Jess Owens, MyNameisMarines, etc.) are either burnt out and/or have stopped posting. I used to watch Beauty content 5y ago, so I understand, that viewership's trends evolve, it's still disheartening to watch it affects Black content creators the most.

booktube literally be milking Black youtubers for our labor, voice, etc and then discarding. just wild. Ashley pours brilliant intellectualism and soul into her videos - i haven't seen a deeper commitment to consistent discussions, especially ones that aren't "popular topics" on booktube as I have on her channel. and the other creators are wildly talented too. ugh. thanks for the affirmation :) we're glad to be back and pushing through. we will find our audience, our people, and we will stick by them

I feel this so much. I quit bookstagram because the video that got the most views was a traditional style fantasy. Everything else was ignored. I don’t want to just read those books so I say no thanks

@JesseOnYoutube13 сағат бұрын
ahhh!!!!! ok right? i started writing the novel because of my experiences being a stud and a stripper while trying to date. the prejudice i faced from other lesbians/queer community...not fun. but there's so much queerness in stripping as a whole and that's been a blessing. we just don't talk about studs in love, especially if they're best friends and trying to navigate whether to risk their friendship for love. thank you for the inspiration. its needed.

As a genderqueer person thats not totally out everywhere the gendered terms going around on bookstagram and booktube always make me feel... off/uncomfortable. I always feel left out of the trends when people are using "book girlie" and the like, and I've honestly found myself engaging less in the book community as a result. It can feel so hard to navigate the space sometimes. I've always loved y'all's videos because they felt comforting and like I was just hanging out with a friend. Y'all make me feel safe somehow. I can't wait for y'all's book! Sending love to you and your family!

"Girlie is gender neutral" is kind of a wild take. I'm 6'6", bald and bearded. Can't imagine anyone calling me "girlie" and thinking "Wow, look at me, doing a Gender Neutral". It would be pretty funny though, so feel free if it would improve y'all's day.

I feel betrayed in the reading spaces sometimes because it really doesn’t cater to everyone. It makes reading trendy, it’s not for the love of it anymore. The biggest booktubers all kinda look the same and read the same. It’s just sad that I have to be purposely intentional to find diversity of all kinds to follow me

I feel ya'll on the whole "book girlies" thing. I also don't really interact with/follow people use that exclusively. Same with people who have no queer/trans books (The exceptions are maybe people who do really niche nonfiction content). Or, like, if the only queer book on your feed is Evelyn Hugo (or the like), I'm out. It's really cool that y'all are opening up about your other job, and that you're taking some of that and putting it into your book. Tbh y'all had me at stud4stud romance, but I'm even more excited to see how it is knowing that! I hope y'all feel more comfortable being on booktube having opened up about it. Anyone who is weird about it isn't worth the time

Everyone deserves positive space. On a lighter note I'm happy that y'all brought up lashes! I know a few dancers and people who are dance adjacent and a lot of the meticulous work relating to their look goes unrecognized.

I've been waiting for someone to bring up the girly issue! "GIrly is gender neutral" only works in trans and nonbinary spaces when it's people who would otherwise feel dysphoria or discomfort from "girly" reclaim for themselves and others who consent to it in a fun way. It can't and doesn't function that way when cis people say it and force it onto their audience.

(Oh yeah, speaking of, we sent y’all a couple sewing and candle making vids on IG of people we like to follow, for y’all’s reference. We used to make and sell candles and we’re low key terrible at sewing but still watch people.) Bayberry is a plant generally used for luck, bringing in money, and even for bringing in food and other resources. We burned our first bayberry candle this past weekend and it went out today and as soon as it did, we got an interview for a job that’s 15K more than what we make now. So we definitely vibe with it!

We sent a few vids on candle making and sewing, for your future reference. We used to make candles and also suck so bad at sewing but still love certain creators, so we sent some for y’all on the gram.) Bayberry is a beautiful plant, and when in candle form, it’s used for luck and to bring physical resources, such as food, shelter, and money to your pockets.
