As someone that feels like a perpetual beginner, because i am, i find myself constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone, without trying anything I consider dangerous. There is a difference between trying something new that you really can aim for, and going straight from Ollies to 7 stairs if that makes sense. Just have to find a logical progression. Im still learning kickflips, but I keep pushing myself to ollie onto taller pads, or into boardslides because i still have so much to learn. What i dont do is try learning on kinked rails down stairs. Hopefully that makes sense because im a trash skater but i just want to have fun

This is exactly how I went about skating. Learned the Ollie went right for steps. Did a 5 set while barely knowing how to Ollie. Learned heelflip, hit a 3 set. Learned the kick flip, hit a 6 set. I got injured doing that lol but the feeling of accomplishment upon landing it, while not even kick flipping a smaller set before hand, it’s irreplaceable
@gustavokuchler7589

15:13 that makes so much sense, never had thought about the fact that the more tries you go for the bigger the risk of getting injured... might as well commit on the first go, but at least for me there is some days that mindset simply doesnt work

That's very true actually because we literally only had a ramp , a box, a rail that we made and some other stuff we made, basically everything we had to build ourselves bc therr was no skatepark..there is one now... @liambrown8074
@liambrown8074 Жыл бұрын
Fear factor is one element of safety. Those training regimens you mentioned are another. As skateboarders begin to recognize the sport aspect of skating more, we're seeing more people taking a safety and injury-prevention mindset when skating. There's been a notion for decades that only young people ride skateboards, but I know people in their 70's who still play tennis multiple times a week. Probably 95% of skateboarding is no more high-impact than tennis, but you have to approach it with the same preparations as you would any other vigorous physical activity.

It's so true what your say Dan at the beginning about fear. Just getting back into it at times at 50 and I'm so frickin fear based to roll over the coping on a mini from disaster. I'm such a whimp...I've had lots of injuries in the past and I think taking anymore bails at this point is too much yet this fear mind is holding me back from over coming this threshold (among other more advantages maneuvers). One of the popular skate vids of the eighties "Fear is the mind killer" so true.

I wish I learnt how to fall and bail properly when I used to skate. I could never attempt any tricks because I would just really seriously injure myself. It's amazing watching this guys gracefully bail out of something where I'd probably be twisting my ankle, or dropping my knee or shin on the rain, or just straight up slamming my face into concrete.

I always equate skating skills, to swinging a baseball bat. When you are good at baseball, you dont think about every little detail. You just step up to the plate and swing the fookin bat. You are confident/dont even question your ability to swing the bat, its natural. With skating, ive been trying to get to that point of just stepping up to rhe plate and swinging rather than breaking every aspect down and it helps. Obviously if you wan hit opposite field, there's alterations to your swing/stance, but still, just get up to bat and swing. Get on your board, get comfortable distributing weight, and jumping comfortable. Everything a variation of the jump/ollie. These younger skaters/people that learn young, its more engrained into their heads . For me being older learning, getting away from the thinking of how to put my foot, where and how to pop, timing, is harder. But for younger kids it's more natural to just "do" things. And with these training ground parks, people are next level good. I love it. Love skateboarding.
@myahrose94
@myahrose94 Жыл бұрын
such a great analogy honestly this is what i think about a lot because i see these little kids at my park just go down these ramps effortlessly whereas i’m still focusing on my foot placement doing the same thing lol

It amazes me how some people can just be pre-commited like that. I try to do that when I do tricks but I always feel like I have to either warm up to it or I need to be very selective about what trick I am trying, like that I know I have the level of skating to do it. So I would not be able to just commit to a 5050 down a 10 stair downrail unless I have done it before on a like 6 stair rail before. Where as it feels like those guys would just throw it anyway. Craziness

I skated hard in the 90s, and just like today, it was not cool to wear helmets and pads. Had an acquaintance we skated with round town kickflip a good sized gap, commit, and landed. Board came shooting out from under him, and he went down fast and hard. The angle was just right for his head to bounce off the edge of the curb and we had to call an ambulance from the payphone when he just laid there lifeless. He went to the same school as us, and ended up in a coma for almost a month. He was never the same after, and never skated again. Not saying this to scare anyone or be dad (though I am a dad now), but when you're young, nothing is scary, nothing will hurt you. You're never going to get old or die. If you are trying something big, and you've never done it before, put a helmet on. The next 50+ years of your life, or whatever you get, might be extremely different than what it could have been.

I used to be able to skate vert ramps/big bowls and solid handrails under 10 stairs when I was 15-16, just recently started skating again at 29 a week ago and I shit you not It 'feels' scary to drop a 4ft quarter, the mental hurdle I had to cross just to commit to rock to fakies was ridiculous, the only thing my body and mind has kept from the era is general board control, can still skate fast pushing and feel comfortable just need to get used to bailing and the transition side of things again. Starting to feel that depression disappear which is the main thing. Aint gonna stop until Im shredding bowls fast enough to make your eyes bleed.
