So we have all seen the new 2021 Raptor teaser, and we know several things that will be of interest to us here: 1) Unlike the rest of the F-150 lineup, the 2021 Raptor will have coil spring suspension in the rear. I'm eager to examine it and show you what's similar and what's different between it and this TRX. 2) 35-inch tires are standard, 37-inch tires are optional. But suspension travel is artificially restricted by a full inch for tire clearance if you get the 37s, so the 35-inch truck will almost certainly flex more on the ramp than the 37-inch version. More travel = more maximum flex. 3) The new 2021 Raptor will only be available in the SuperCrew aka crew cab configuration, so you can forget any SuperCab aka extended cab Raptor flex index numbers you may have previously seen. And you can bet that all of the old Raptor's RTI claims were based on the short-wheelbase extended cab version, because that's the best-case setup that marketers love to dwell on as if they're all like that. They're not. Now, with the crew cab being the only cab, the Raptor's sole wheelbase is 145.5 inches, which is only a hair longer than the 145.1-inch wheelbase of this TRX. The Raptor vs TRX ramp battle -- when I can arrange it -- will be apples to apples in terms of the critical wheelbase factor.

Great video as always mate, really interesting to get an engineers perspective on this. Out of interest does this model of truck have a lower tow rating than the others in the range that are fitted with a rear stabiliser bar? I'm from Aus and we don't really get any of these larger "utes" here.
@ALMX5DP3 жыл бұрын
The TRX does have a lower payload or tow rating than other RAMs in the model range, but the missing antiroll bar is just one of the aspects that likely influences that difference (others being general suspension geometry, spring rates, shock dampening curves and overall weight of the vehicle being others).
@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
Such extreme high-flying baja-racing inspired off-road packages usually do have lower tow and payload ratings than their working counterparts. This one is 8,100 pounds towing/1,310 pounds payload (3,672 kg tow/ 594 kg payload). Ram 1500s normally go higher, especially in terms of payload where the weight in the weight on the suspension is highest. In the US an 8,100-lb tow rating would equate to a 810-lb (10%) nose load on the hitch. Here, Ram can get away without the rear stabilizer bar because of the reduced load ratings, but it's also because of the 6-inch (152 mm) wider track width that this truck has. The substantially wider footprint has perhaps more to do with it, in fact. FYI The Raptor is 8,000 pounds tow/1,200 pounds payload (3,626 kg/544 kg). Here in the US payload includes passenger weight, and towing includes the effects of tongue weight on the truck's suspension. It's an either/or, to a certain extent, too. If you have four heavy blokes in the cab, you won't have enough remaining payload to account for 810 pounds of tongue weight, so the situational tow rating goes down accordingly. Put a couple of dirtbikes in the back and you might not be able to tow anything. Our truck makers aren't good an making that obvious. They only talk in terms of best-case maximums.
@herbert6963 жыл бұрын
@@DanEdmunds Yep, we're very similar here. Both of those trucks have a much lower payload comparable to the Japenese "utes" we get sold here which is surprising given the difference in size. A Toyota Hilux can have a payload of up around the 1000 Kg mark (inclusive of a tray/ bed). The marketing is also misleading as like your manufacturers ours also neglect to mention that the ball weight (~10% of payload) needs to be added to the vehicles payload. The hilux is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes which seems insane to me given its size- The towing number has become somewhat of an arms race here between manufacturers though.

@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
Because the springs are intended to compress progressively, with the soft upper coils bottoming out before the middle and upper ones do, there will be coil-to-coil contact that would make a clanging noise and rub off some paint to get rust started. So they have these nylon coil covers on every other loop one so there's no metal-to-metal contact when they nest together. Look at the right rear under-truck shot near the end. You can see the fully compressed coil all wadded up with those covers doing their job.

I do like the testing and review, but I don't get why keep the scoreboard (as is): It is just a "random" number, really has no meaning because not compared apples to apples (because of the division with wheelbase). The Land Cruiser got a better score making it up ~3/4 of the way on the ramp. TRX made it up all the way. I would take the TRX any day.
@ALMX5DP3 жыл бұрын
It's an articulation index, so by dividing by the wheelbase gives an apples to apples comparison for how well a particular vehicle can articulate. It's just one measure by which an offroader can show it's prowess.
@joel.73723 жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP I understand all the geometry behind those numbers. The bottom line is that longer wheelbase RAM, which in certain offroad situation is worse (brake over on the top of rocks), will be able to climb up bigger obstacles. Might not be able to come down on the other side if it beach whales on the top tough.😄
@TeCKis3003 жыл бұрын
@@joel.7372 RTI is just one facet, but still a good indicator that scores how diametrically opposed the axles can get. A higher score shows that a vehicle can have axles on more extreme planes - independent of wheelbase. Another way to look at it is why should an RTI score increase for longer wheelbases with no change in axle articulation capabilities? Wheelbase is not necessarily an asset off-road.
@DanEdmunds3 жыл бұрын
The wheelbase absolutely does matter. Imagine something that had a wheelbase of 1 mile that made it just as far up the ramp as the TRX. Would that be impressive? Think about what a score of 1,000 means. Climb=wheelbase, the rear tire touches the ramp, and the suspension can then level out as the rear suspension begins to load up and get back in phase with the front. That's how you get up, over, and past obstacles. I think all of this will begin more clear when we take brand out of it and compare Wrangler 2-door, 4-door and Gladiator. I'm still trying to get my hands on the two Wranglers.
@joel.73723 жыл бұрын
@@DanEdmunds I agree in most offroad situation short wheelbase is an advantage. I don't care about brands, I am a fair consumer: I owned 3 Toyota trucks (2 Tacoma 1 Tundra), 2 Dodges (Dakota, Ram), and 1 Ford F150 (currently on a small Jeep) all 4wd (mostly offroad packages). In the situation I seen you portraying a narrow trail situation with huge obstacle on one side, where the TRX was climbing up easier. Also agree we don't have the other side of the equation if it's a short huge bolder/obstacle the TRX will beach-whale on top of it because of the long wheelbase vs if a shorter wheelbase vehicle where the rear already also up on the rock. I would enjoy some actual offroad testing under similar circumstances.

The Raptor comes in two lengths: extended cab w/5.6 ft bed on 134.2-in wheelbase; crew cab w/5.6 ft bed on 146-in wheelbase. The TRX is not available in the shorter wheelbase. I am certain the shorty will earn a higher score, but I'm not sure about the crew cab.

@@DanEdmunds You can test the 2020 Raptor. It would be interesting to see how the SuperCrew scores.
