Great video Dane, but stopping a car in drive and applying the handbrake is bad if you drive a dual clutch. Volkswagen for example use DSG gearboxes in a lot of their cars. If you keep that in drive, and apply the parking brake, you'll wear out the clutch pack, and I can tell you that's a very expensive repair. It'll burn out the clutch. I'm not talking about tests, about what's right or wrong, you're the expert, it's just an observation. The clutch will slip constantly with a dsg box, but maybe not with the typical torque converters.

I'm not an engineer so I can't comment on the technical aspects that you mentioned. This is just general advice for standard automatic cars.

So for the DSG gearbox should you put up the handbrake and put it in neutral rather than drive ?
@Edvard.Munchkin3 жыл бұрын
@@alisonbrowne8133 If it's for a test, I don't know what procedure you should follow, but if it's normal driving, avoid neutral at all costs. When you're stopped at a junction, just keep your foot on the brake so you can see if it's clear to go then move off. If you are stopped for a long period of time, put it into park and apply the parking brake. Neutral should only be used for towing your car if it breaks. My Passat has auto hold, so when I come to a stop, a green P illuminates on the dash, i can then leave the car in D and take my foot off the brake. This doesn't wear the transmission as the brakes disconnect the transmission from the engine. To move off then again, I just lightly press the accelerator, that disengages the auto hold and away you go. What year and model VW do you have, I may be able to help?

HI Dane, loving the videos. My instructor always tells me I have to put the car in neutral with the handbrake on at red lights and I should never keep the car in drive and my foot on the brake, with the handbrake on? I’m finding a lot of conflicting information, would love to hear your opinion!
@DaneTygheletsdrive2 жыл бұрын
There is always going to be conflicting information because there is often more than one way to implement a driving skill. It's not like everything is black and white, there's a lot of grey as well. You do not have to be in neutral at the lights, that is completely unnecessary but not wrong keeping the car in drive helps you move off quicker and more efficiently. There should be no need to keep the foot on the brake and the handbrake on at lights, I don't think I advised anyone to do that.
@mariavoznuka95692 жыл бұрын
Sorry I know this video is quite old but is it okay to keep my automatic car in drive and put the handbrake on and then release the break? My instructor isn’t available for the next while so I’ve been driving with family members and they keep telling me that I should just keep the break down and not bother with the handbrake which I keep questioning
@DaneTygheletsdrive2 жыл бұрын
Your family are not driving instructors so they don't know or understand what the best advice is. Yes keep it in drive and pull up the handbrake on a hill, at lights or if stopping a long time, everything I said in the video is as relevant then as it is now.
@mariavoznuka95692 жыл бұрын
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thanks so much for the reply! Yeah they were basically saying that it’s bad for the automatic car because when it’s in drive it pulls forward naturally and the handbrake can damage something, anyway thanks so much again!
@DaneTygheletsdrive2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, when it's in drive it has that forward power so you're ready to go. This is what you want - to be ready and confident moving off in a queue or at lights. Don't listen to any nonsense about it being bad for the car, utterly ridiculous.
@sarahmcd93453 жыл бұрын
Hi Dane, great video thank you! I have a question regarding the handbrake at lights. You mentioned staying in Drive for most of the journey - if you are at traffic lights and will be waiting more than 5 seconds do you apply the handbrake while still in Drive or would you change to Park and handbrake for a red light? Is it ok for the car if you have handbrake on in Drive?

@@DaneTygheletsdrive like the reversing camera, speed limit warnings, parking and lane assist systems etc. I don't know if I can turn them off and my test is on Tuesday. And I have one more question. Should I select the N or P gear while checking my around when I am doing the 3 point turn or leaving the car in the Drive gear but pulling the handbreak would be enough? For the best practice, I select the D gear and pull the handbreak when I stop at the traffic lights and the hills but 3 point turn is a bit confusing in terms of selecting the gear in an automatic car.
@DaneTygheletsdrive2 жыл бұрын
On the Turnabout you don't need to use the handbrake all the time as it depends on the hill, just leave it in D or R depending on the situation, the same in a queue just wait in D. You can use all the features that you mentioned but you need to know how to turn them off. I don't recommend using lane assistance at all and the tester will want you to do a hill start without auto hold.

But in an automatic vehicle what do we do as a safety precaution incase the handbrake fails?
