More reason why I want to visit Australia. The fierce freedom Adrian demonstrates while being so kindly, imparting his vast knowledge of Detroit diesels. I know with all 4 stroke industrial diesels you must use break in oil now or they will be oil burners. For whatever reason the removal of zinc in oil now not only wipes out flat tappets but prevents ring seating. At the company i work for now we do 4 hour, balls to the wall, bollard pull, break ins. Or 4 hr dynos or 4hr load banks....full load. Before using break in oil and long duration bresk ins...there was a multitude of redo work for oil consumption.

Too much oil can cause all sorts of problems. I remember one time I was at work and a lady had her oil cahanged at Walmart. Our shop was 10 miles down the road. They didn't even drain the oil or change the filter. They filled it up to where it was 4 inches over full. The engine was shaking, low power. I drained 3.5 gallons out of a 1.25 gallon system. Needless to say, she wasn't happy. But it's amazing what extra lubricant can cause.

I remember when I was a spareparts salesman back in the 1980's and a fresh off the boat bloke came in & wanted some engine degreaser as He had been knocked back at a rego inspection. I sold Him 4 litres of the stuff and He asked if He could use the hose out the back, I said sure, 20 minutes later he came back in & said His car wouldn't start, We went out the back & He had poured the degreaser into the motor through the filler cap in the rocker cover & then stuck the hose in it.

Hello DangarStu ... really enjoy and appreciate your videos ... had to Comment on this one involving Adrian ... I see you're down under, which means Adrian must be as well (I tried Google-searching '892 Trucking' and searching KZbin for 'Adrian' & 'Detroit' but don't find his business or his YT channel) ... I'm in Vancouver, Canada and have an old '79 Uniflite 42 DCS with a pair of late '78-production DD 6-71 Naturals (4-valve heads) ... I'm always on the lookout for DD expertise (locally and abroad) as most of the local DD career mechanics have retired, or, expired, sorry to say. I had no prior diesel experience before taking on ownership of the above boat but have always been competent enough (and fairly well-equipped tool-wise - I tend to supplement my general tool inventory with special tools when and as required) to work on my own vehicles, m/c's, boats, ect. With regard to my Uni's DD's, I am plagued by a Port engine crankcase oil fuel contamination issue. I had suspected as much since late FEB 2019 (boat purchase) based on an overly high Port dipstick reading ('making oil') and very poor Port engine oil pressure at operating temp idle speeds (

Now it would be important to know what if any relationship exists between having too much oil and the rear two cylinders with stuck rings. Are there any aftermarket top oils or additives that might loosen those rings? A mixture of acetone and power steering fluid sitting on top of the pistons for a few days might do it, unless they are welded in there.
@DangarMarine4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a chance they are related and it can be freed up.
