Join us as Garret Wing dives into some of the most pressing and controversial issues surrounding dog breeds today. In this live video, Garret will address the recent human fatalities caused by dogs, examining which breeds have been involved in these tragic events. He'll provide detailed accounts of cases where dogs have killed humans, shedding light on the severity and frequency of these incidents.
Garret will also tackle the heated topic of the XL bully breed ban in the UK, exploring the implications of this decision and questioning whether more breed-specific bans are on the horizon. Are these bans effective in reducing dog-related fatalities, or do they unfairly target certain breeds without addressing the root causes of aggression?
Furthermore, Garret will discuss whether certain breeds are inherently more dangerous than others, drawing on his extensive experience and knowledge as a professional dog trainer. He'll offer insights into what measures can be taken to prevent such tragedies, advocating for responsible ownership and effective training practices.
This video promises to be an engaging and informative session, packed with expert analysis, real-life examples, and practical advice. Whether you're a dog owner, a trainer, or simply interested in the ongoing debate about dog breeds and public safety, this is a discussion you won't want to miss. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of these critical issues.

RESPONSABILITY seems to be something that is non-existent in these times! People don't research the type of dog they want, which they are probably going by the way a dog looks instead of what they can handle. Also, People don't train their dogs, they don't secure their dogs in their own yard or home and they don't socialize their dogs!

I have a 95lb, 3yo Catahoula. The first year with him was a nightmare because I had no knowledge in how to train a hound. I almost rehomed him at 3mos because of his biting that was causing me serious injuries. Fortunately, I found a wonderful balanced trainer. She kept him for inboard training for a week and he never bit me again. After that, we started private training. She taught me how to train him. He was severely dog reactive. We had weekly training sessions for 2 full years. I put in hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get him to the wonderful, friendly, and children loving dog he is today. I won't say that he loves other dogs, but he definitely tolerates them and no longer reacts toward them. Any owner of a large dog has a responsibility to get their dog properly trained and always use the correct equipment.

I was hesitant about corrective collars. I never had a dog that could outsmart and run circles around me until I got an Australian cattle/boxer. I tried all of the positive stuff and when that didn't work I accepted that either I corrected him or I ended up in jail and he would be put down. He's 3 now and settled a lot. It's still constant work. That moment that I get comfortable and think that I can slack he picks up and proves Mom wrong.

Comment about the video of the boy in Canada that was killed by the Corsos: As a owner of 3 cane corsos, with no bite history but they are protective, my grandchildren and older adult children who come to visit, are NEVER left unsupervised. You just never know. If my husband or myself are not home, our kids know not to enter our home. If the police have already been called out to their home twice before for bite related issues, it's a no brainer (IMO). For the father to say he would never put his son in danger is a blatant lie. He did just that. While I am deeply sorry and saddened for his loss, there is no excuse for this preventable tragedy.

@@gircakes2 Several factors played a roll in why we chose this breed. Loyalty, obedience (when properly trained), intelligence, not high energy that requires tons of exercise and their majestic beauty. Why does anyone pick a certain breed over another? We have always wanted to own a Corso but our kids were too young and we didn't have the time to dedicate to the training that is necessary to own this breed. We didn't want to be bad dog owners, have something happen and then blame it on the dog. With age comes wisdom. I could keep going but I hope that answers your question.

Terrible owners are why I don't enter fenced play yards. People humanise their dogs too much and when they get aggressive they pull out the "my dog gas never done that before, it must be the other fogs fault". People need to be reminded that at the end of the day they have a predator on the end of their leash.

Thank you very much for your videos, I'm a first dog owner with absolutely no experience and from when I had my dog (a now 4 years old spinone-maremmano -probably- mix rescue) I've been bombed with a ton of information that repetedly turned out incorrect and misleading. Since I follow your channel I have a lot more understanding of what is going on with my dog. Being it a mix breed and a rescue it has several drives: a lot of prey drive, sometimes she is protective with no reason and she is also fearful. Luckily she is not to big (35 kg) and an accident never happened but I can see that, although she is very loving towards us, if something that she doesnt understand happen she could react. Videos like this one increase my awareness and therefore make my dog owner trip more serene. Thank you again and cheers from Rome(Italy)!

Good show. I have a 20 month old Boerboel male and as you say socialise, train and rinse and repeat. The amount of time and effort involved in making sure a 180 lbs is a good canine citizen is substantial. A half an hour walk around the block is great for on leash training but these guy's need to blow off steam and an hour off leash running free at least every other day is mandatory and that is on top of a big enough garden for them to really be able to stretch their legs. You need to be physically strong and mentally strong. If you are not a leader in your work place or your social circle it is unlikely that a Boerboel will consider you a leader and they will seek to compensate. Lastly you never need to encourage aggression as the guarding instinct is hardwired in to them. If some one climbs over the fence at night they will go for them, what you need is the obedience and control to stop them from killing someone.

This is definitely a conversation that needs to be had Long story short: I was asked to dog sit an 8 mos male American Akita for 2 hrs so my neighbors could move their last truck load to a new house. They never came back for him. My dog experience at the time consisted of walking a poodle once. I went through it. Food aggression, high prey drive (dead animals left on my back patio), aggressive towards other animals and people. I had to walk him late at night and was dragged to the ground countless times. Thankfully, I found an awesome trainer who helped....and countless hours spent training and socializing him. I don't hear many of these dog trainers talk about Akitas. I really wish they would. They are not for the inexperienced owner at all.

Rottweilers have been around since the Roman Empire, it's considered one of the oldest dog breeds. The Doberman was developed in 1880.
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 Ай бұрын
The predecessor to the Rottweiler, Roman Drover dogs, existed back then but not the Rottweiler. It wasn't until after the Roman empire fell and over time the Rottweiler was eventually developed from the drover dog after it bred with other local dogs in the area of Rottweil Germany over however many years. There was no breed standard or even a written account of what a Rottweiler should be or look like until late 1800s early 1900s. And photos of some of those early Rottweilers look very different than what they look like today.

Recently found your channel and really love your content and how you stress education and training. Two items I am very keen on. I currently have my 2nd GSD which I purchased after having a Boerbell pup for a couple of months. I really loved the dog and did a lot of research before I purchased the dog but after getting him and having him for a couple of months I started to feel uneasy about it all. At the time I had children in the house who were wanting to be involved with the dog but were not wanting to follow strict guidelines that I found through training protocols. This worried me as I felt the dog would be getting mixed messages and with the size and strength of the breed, as well as a very strong will it felt like a recipe for disaster. I worked with the breeder who was great and we were able to re-home him with a very loving couple who took great care of him (we kept up with them). I share this to let people know sometimes you make a wrong decision in purchasing a dog and say it is better to admit it early before a tragedy happens than to dig in your heels and think things will work out. In the situation in my household the GSD worked much better as they are (in my opinion) a lot easier to train and blend with a family more easily. I'm alone now and strong and all but even so would hesitate to get a Cane Corso as the risk seems to outweigh the reward.

This is the best video on this subject that I have ever seen ! thank you so much! After thought: there is a reason and a very good one why people cannot keep lions and tigers and grizzly bears in their backyard in the neighborhood. It’s dangerous. Perhaps requiring people with these dangerous breeds to carry large sums of liability insurance and have statements from veterinarians and trainers that the owners are fully capable of managing the breed.

I couldn't catch live, but just wanted to say, I've been scanning the rescues for a puppy lately, and there are soo many pit crosses. Easily over half the dogs in shelters and rescues around here are pits or pit crosses. I think the rise in attacks is due to the availability of the dogs for people who don't know what the heck they're doing with them. Add to that you have no clue about the background of the dog. It's such a shame.

It was obvious that it wasnt the women taking her dogs for a walk but two dogs walking their owner. in addition to her not being able to control em she was using bad equipment and had no idea what to do when they ran wild. some people just shouldnt own a dog. when I see people like this who get walked by their dogs I get out of their way and switch to the other side of the street.

Me and my fiance have a Corso and he's the best, sociable, friendly guy. Loves people, dogs, cats, just wants to play and is a happy boy. BUT he is a Corso and we knew that. He's 120 lbs now and has those protective instincts. We went above and beyond spending countless hours socializing, training and setting constant boundaries in and out of the house. Purchased your courses, attended many local training classes, took him everywhere with us. Lots of environmentals. The list goes on. He reminds me of Thanos a lot. We also know we got really lucky. Good breeding, good genetics. We have constant communication and leadership but we had to dedicate our whole lives to him. He's about 15 months now. Very well behaved. But i see some horror stories with these power breeds. If you don't have time, structure, discipline and leadership skills then DON"T even attempt to get one. They absolutely CAN be a loaded gun.

Almost like there are two distinct lines of the breed. My good friend received one to start showing (she’s a pro-handler and weighs about 110lbs dripping wet)right before a big circuit. He came from Puerto Rico. He was a fully grown male,not leash trained and so aggressive that she got to the point of leaving a long leash on him in his crate because he tried to bite her. My friend is a top Cane and Doberman handler. She sent that dog on the next flight right back to PR.

Great post. I learned from it. I learned from experience and understanding that a dog's sense of smell is so much better than ours and that can affect their behavior. I rescued a Boxer from an abusive owner who was in the drug scene. I've had strangers ask me if they could engage my dog and I'd just ask "not to be rude but if you use drugs I don't think it's wise." Odin could smell the drug scents on them and got upset. Dogs can also smell fear and aggression on humans, my pit bull will react to those scents that are undetectable to my nose.

It's the old story of there are no bad dogs, only badly bred and badly trained dogs. Unfortunately too many dog owners seriously lack the skill and knowledge to be guardians to a large protective breed. Also it seems everyone thinks that just because a dog is of a certain breed it will automatically be able to be trained as a protection dog. This is of course is just not true as in the real world only the best bred and most stable dogs are actually suitable and able to be trained as a protection dog. Also so many seem to not understand when we train protection dogs it is defensive training not attack training. The only people that need and have attack dogs are the military.

I have a Siberian Husky which they classify as similar to German Shepherd. He wouldn't hurt a fly. I trained him that way. I have 2 Chihuahuas and a Pomeranian mix as well as 2 Labs. One time I was out at a dog park with my Husky and 2 schnauzers went after him bcz they had an awful owner. He didn't do ANYTHING back. He just tucked in to try to protect himself. Obviously I got involved immediately and never took him to a dog park again. I got so many compliments on his reaction and felt so proud of his self control. But I trained him to be that way. He knows that he is not allowed to react to smaller animals. No matter what. People always ask about him and my little dogs, like he's dangerous. But he is trained VERY well! And I trust him completely. He is so sweet and loves all animals especially little ones. Him and my Pom mix play every single day. They are playing as I write this. And he is so gentle. He's been around 2 day old kittens too and is the MOST gentle and caring. It's not luck, it's proper training. Period.

Cane Corso was banned in Nov 2023 here in Britain 🇬🇧, along with the XL Bully in December. Pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino (my favourite) are all banned here too. It’s heart breaking. Steve is right about the government and the DOGS TRUST’S organisations lack of accountability for their training and handling of these breeds. 😢

The problem these days is these positive only trainers. Victoria stillwells academy is punting out treat trainers with no corrections or consequences for dogs behaviour. Here’s a treat and another treat and another. And sadly most most normies end up giving treats at the wrong time, they reinforce bad behavior with treats! See it everyday.

Over here in Germany we have "classified breeds" with 2 Lists. One is not allowed to breed,Import or buy, but after Göttingen permissions from the government you can get one from a rescue shelter, not allowed to walk them without a leash and a muzzle, no Chance at all. Travellig for vacation is almost forbidden. 2 List dogs are breedable from certified breeder, higher taxes for most of them, special security around your property., never without a leash.muzzle can be removed after an official test from the government veterinarian
@cordulam
@cordulam 2 ай бұрын
In my federal state list 2 dogs have to go through a behavioral test. If they pass they can be kept like normal dogs (no mandatory muzzle). There is a obedience test for all breeds of dogs, when you pass, you are allowed to let them run without a leash (of course not everywhere). For list 2 dogs the test is much more difficult.

I love the fact you review all dogs breeds for all different types of owners. I am in uk they have recently banned XL Bully’s. There has been a high amount of attacks. Personally i believe it’s due to a high recent fashion of the dog and the types of owners buying these’s dogs for the wrong reasons. In the uk we have had the same problem decades ago with German shepherds and Staffordshire bull terriers.

People don't listen to words - they hear you say "...don't get a Cane Corso - they're too much dog to handle for most people...". Then they see yours and forget who you are and think to themselves "...I'm not mopst people...". I would suggest that you don't show your Corsos - because you and your dogs are the exception and most people think to themselves "I'll do the training" "I'll work hard" " I'm good with dogs" or whatver - probably the best intentions, but most people are fooling themselves and in most cases don't understand what discipline means. either self discipline or discipline for their dogs and don't understand the exsperience you have and the work involved. Seeing your well trained and well bbehaved Corsos makes them thing they can do it too. Probably if people with well trained and well behaved Corsos didn't show their dogs, more people would understand that they are not an appropriate breed for most people.

As a UK dog walker, who spends a lot of time with an XL bully, the ban is completely impractical. He Judy’s wants to be social; it takes a lot of creative thinking to keep him fit, stimulated, and social. People are very put off by his muzzle sadly. Like Thanos, he is a good soul, but I never take his good behaviour for granted. Great video, thank you

it isnt the drive that is the issue it is the lack of being able to manage such a drive that is. owner of the dogs attacking the cat didnt even bother to tighten the leash or attempt to walk across the street. with the horse the dog wasnt trained to do that it just saw a prey animal and said ¨why not?¨ while it was a breed thing im wondering why the owner allowed the dog to do that or gave it the chance to. without a leash its drive that is the issue but with a leash its the lack of management that is the issue. sadly a lot of people are attracted to large, powerful, protective breeds because who wouldnt want a dog that will willingly take a bullet for them and their family. people like these breeds because they either feel bad for them or want an all out attack guard dog. large dogs attract the same people who love large guns but dont know how to use them properly and only have them because they look cool and intimidating and give the owner a status. a lot of people think a mean fearful or high prey driven dog is the same as a well trained attack or guard dog. that puppy corso was fixating on people which isnt good because the dog will learn to lunge and bite on walks.

Sometimes, a dog has a screw loose. My niece has one. I've worked with dogs since 1990. Her dog attacked me and left a nasty bite. Turns out this is his second bad bite. The other bite took place in another state. My spidey senses told me not to go into the backyard. Because this was my niece I did. I wouldn't turn my back on him, which was a good thing.

These breeds were bred to fight or guard,therefore they have aggressive tendencies and natural wariness. No matter how much the blood lines temperament has been bred to be more family friendly, the dog is what it is. Not to mention careless owners who don't train(teach) their animals, these dogs are naturally dominant, if they see anything or anyone as below them, they may attack( their version of teaching a pack member) and end someone. There should be licensing rules for the OWNERS, tests to see that they are capable of owning a dog like this. There should also be mandatory training for ANY dog. It's common sense,never leave any dog alone with children,nuff said

So, I studied the Staffordshire bull terrier - actually the breed that was brought to the USA with Irish immigrants that is the foundation for the APBT - and they come - as you put pre installed from the factory, with human affectionate and no humen aggression. Human aggression was bred out of them with selective breeding, so they will not bite their handlers in the pit and also most of them were owned by low income poor people and the dogs had to live with their families, their children and they didn't want them to have any aggression towards them. They got the nick name Nany dogs, as they were left with the children at home. I didn't only trust the literature and went to meet a lot of them - way over hundred dogs - at dog shows, them and their American cousine the AmStaff, never ever did any of them showed any signs of any aggression towards me, a total stranger, all of them simply licked me to death, showred me with affection. So hiw come they all of a sudden became aggressive towards people? First I don't think this is true for the majority of these breeds, the opposite. You can see rescues operations of figthing dogs yards, the rescuers are greeted with affection, no aggression towards people at all, and yet they labled aggressive. Yes they probably be aggresive towards other dogs, but never to people. I even saw fighting APBT and SBT that can play with other dogs with no aggression what so ever, but once they are in the pit, it is fighting time, much like a boxer or a MMA fighter. Blaming the dogs, specific dog or specific breed, is like blaming the car weather it be a sports car, a truck, or a van in the accident, no one will take that seriously, the same with dogs. Banning a dog breed for what they might be capable of doing, is like banning all sports car because the can go fast and if an accident occurs, then the results will probably be horrific. Same with heay trucks, why not ban them all, as if they are involved in an accident with a small car, the results for the small car will be horrific. You want someone to blame, blame the owners. People think of having a dog as if it is like having a piece of furniture for some or a toy for others, resulting in poor raising and taking care of their education.

That is an incredibly well trained horse. I have a Mali and as a puppy right away I introduced her to my current horse. She gets along with him well, she ignores him unless he comes up to her and she greets him well. I still have work to do to make them safe around one another. But I will continue to do so, that she won't see any horse as prey. I saw the injuries on the horse. Luckily all those wounds are very superficial. I've seen what 2 Rotties can do to a horse.. They did kill him (my childhood horse) That's why I will agree and stress and train your dogs.

I was chased after by 6 pitbulls when I was 9 years old. I remembered to scream fire and get as big as I could while yelling... they got confused looks on their faces while growling. They had me cornered against a fence and my first thought was I'm going to fight and scream. My neighbors flew out of their houses and my step dad came running out and chased all of them, grabbing one by his leg. I feel bad for this part, but all the dogs had to be euthanized after that incident. If my step-dad hadn't bum rushed them I'd have been mauled to death. I was terrified of pitbulls after that. I've had 1 american pitbull since (died of cancer 😢) and now have a bully and they completely changed how I feel about the breed. Very powerful animals, but with proper respect, knowledge, proper training and socializing they can be wonderful dogs. I'm grateful that both our pits have had wonderful temperaments, but its always in my mind what they are capable of as it should.

What is the reason why in areas that allow XL power breeds, that a license or owner certification is not implemented? Has it been tried in the past and failed? I have a 65lb pitlab mix, that I adopted 3 years ago. He's highly socialized and gets agility and scent training each week. I was a first time dog owner, but would have absolutely gone through some kind of certification/education course before I adopted.

-NOT TRYING TO BE A DICK- We have XL bully Rottweiler mix. It hase the size, body and light brown coloring of the Bully mixed with Rottweiler "Boxiness and sturdiness". Not a dog for first time owners. The size and power of these "xl bully + mixes" is something that you really have to take in concideration on every situations because they will "knock over" even the biggest guy in the room if it goes on "full power" mode and can cause some serious injuries if you don't get the dog under control. Training is a must from day 1 and you have to keep it going constantly. Unluckily we got one with some serious dog AdHd which has made things pretty hard occasionally but thankfully this isnt "my first rodeo" lol. Even the regular versions of these breeds can be demanding for the most owners so please. If you are inexperienced do not get these "xl or xl mixes". It could end badly.

I myself prefer females to male dogs, because they have never had that pushing that constant dominance drive that males always seem to push on me or my grandchildren. I always test the Fur Babies dogs dominance drive at the start. While I want my Fur Babies dogs to have a protective services side for my family and property, I always test them the beginning. I have had every type of Fur Babies dogs from German shepherds, Great Danes, in fact I now have a Great Dane, Doberman Pinscher mix named Miss Nola. She was passed over because she didn't have the black and tan markings like her other litter mates. And is All black, the only time she shows any protective services is when she is in the house with me at night when I am alone. But she has shown aggressively towards certain people who have shown aggressively towards me.

He keeps coming and my Rottie has teeth bared. I finely yelled at the guy saying this dog could break through this screen and hurt you. I had a good hold of my dog. Listened very well. I said again get back in your car and let get this dog in the house. I got my dog in the house. My point is these are highly protective breeds. It is all most like they want to get bit. I just saw a video regarding the possibility of shots causing behavior changes. There is some concern about the possibility that dogs are getting too many, they might not need them that often. Some shots last much longer and one year or three years. This was from a vet that has observed behavior changes after dogs get their yearly shots. Has anyone else heard about this or experienced this? Could this be why perfectly good dogs snap?

My friends mom bought a pocket bully. She thought that she did her research. The dog was just too much. The trainer told her that it is in the dogs genetics. This breeder is intentionally breeding these dogs to be cimpact "protection" dogs. It's possible to get them trained but it took a lot of time and money. I'm not saying that they're all like that but there are a lot. I don't understand the reasoning. Is it like huge tires and lifts on trucks? Guys can't feel tough unless their dogs are vicious? My friend has a cane corso and a pitt. They are well trained and great dogs but man that bully is a whole different story. This is why pitts and bully types get bad names.
