Coast Guard Alaska follows the men and women of the US Coast Guard stationed in Alaska. Watch as they risk life and limb to save lives in America's deadliest waters!
Season 2 - Episode 13:
In this episode the team must try to locate a fishing boat that has been lost at sea for hours! They suspect it might have run into a dangerous patch of shore with giant boulders. The brave Coast Guard Swimmers are lowered down to take a look. Also the helicopter team is dispatched to rescue an injured worker on a giant cargo ship at sea! This and more adventures with the men and women of Coast Guard Alaska!

wow... been watching these for a while now and tbh I don't get emotional easily. But seeing the family and friends in the first rescue of the two fishermen, their emotions going from extreme worry to overwhelming relief got to me. Former SAR volunteer from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and Canadian Infantry Vet, its easy to compartmentalize when you're working a case... But when you see the family and their reactions and emotions... it gets to ya a bit.

Nah I would take this any day over mortars/rpg going off around the encampment im in or the sound of a round zipping/snapping around me. Or going out on patrols for ghost who shoot and disappear leaving you wondering who it could be in a village where they all dress the same.

Thank you for your service.💜 I always try to thank a service man or woman when I see them. Shake their hands (fist bump now lol) and if I can buy their meal or pay for gas. I never forget our older generations. They seem to be overlooked sometimes. We are safe because of all our branches of military. The tote rescue at the base made me cry like a baby. My son's best friend died in a car accident two years ago. He was like a son to us. He always came in the door asking, "What you go cooking?" I knew him since the the day he was born. He and my son were best friends since they were Tatar Tots. He was 21 when he died. My son 18. My mother in law, he and my husband died all in a six month period. My life and my son's life was turned upside down.

It must be a relief to get inside the helicopter. I live in a hurricane area so am familiar with the heroic action of the Coast Guard but these Alaska teams are incredibly brave and citizens are tough.

Good job USCG. That guy in the tote was truly fu**ed without a rescue. That water was probably so cold that jumping and making a swim of it would be suicidal. And you can’t paddle it or even shift position very much without sinking. Freezing cold and soaking wet for 24 hours. That’s amazing to see. Great job.

Float planes have very restrictive flying conditions. The floats weigh so much little can be taken aboard the plane itself, and any wind makes flying impossible. They run out of fuel fast too, and have to carry less fuel in the first place due to weight.

I keep saying they need at least an EMT2, if not a paramedic Just dont understand why the crew aren't paramedics. They do such dangerous work so calmly and efficient. A wonderful group of people up there in Alaska.

Their focus is on quick recovery and transfer to higher care. The Helicopter Cabin is not a good place to be doing anything more then keeping a patient stable. Plus they dont have room for additional medical supplies or equipment. Its like sending a brain surgeon on a house call...

That size is around $1500 new. I'd hope one of the boats searching saw free gear and grabbed it. Not sure if the survivor would have a legal claim to it after he had to abandon it, but I would imagine any crew that picked it up would be willing to return it to him if he asked, given the sentimental value it would have for him at that point.

the coast guard doesn't operate any tilt-rotor aircraft, and the answer is complex... rotor wash from those massive engines would be so big, they'd have to hover near max hoisting range every time, and for what? better speed and fuel capacity? the H-60s do a wonderful job as-is, so i doubt we'll see the coast guard switching to tilt rotors any time soon

The rotor wash on Ospreys is huge, so it would make hoists very hard. On top of that, I know those vehicles are a lot more technical and difficult to maintain espeically in the temperators, ocean spray and freezing conditions that the Alaskan Coast Guard seem to operate in.

Cost, storage space, rotor wash, helicopters are more mobile especially in tight spaces. There are tons of reasons that make helicopters better suited for SAR.

Why, l'm just asking here, with all the technical abilities we have, has someone not invented an affordable GPS device that is small enough, tough enough, and affordable that boaters, fishermen, hunters, hikers, and others that are out and about have a device that can be attached to a rescue suit, pack, boat? It would make things easier for the Coast Guard, rescue teams, and others to located and rescue lost /missing people.

I have to ask why anyone working or recreating on Pacific Northwest or Alaskan waters does not wear a PLB at all times while on the water. On our 53 foot Spencer Ketch all our life rests have PLB’s that activate immediately on vest inflation and we have survival suits on board for every crew member we have on board. PLB’s run about $500 and can either transmit on the AIS frequency or the SOSAS network or both depending on the product. The AIS ones transmit via VHF so the range is limited but other vessels in the area will know someone is in the water right away the satellite transmitter based ones may require up to 2 hrs to get a lock because the depend on a satellite to pass to pick up the signal this is why a PLB that does both is better but they are about $1200

i hope many saw God's design in the two fishermen lost at sea, sometimes he makes it so obvious it's hard to deny. they both tried to get into a tote, but one of them failed, he gets drifted ashore and he's the first one found of course. because the ocean they were looking in was how big and in blue totes. please don't get me wrong, i know these men are good and dedicated, i would never question that. but that's a lot to ask with that big search, to find two guys in two blue totes that could've ended up God knows where. but instead one man fails to get in the tote, and he lasts long enough to tell the coasties where he last saw his friend, minimizing the search area. can we get a better view into God's plan? Kinda wonder why anything used on the water would be blue, especially something with such an obvious emergency use as a big watertight box. Right up there with the Navy's blue camo uniforms; if they're on the gray boat, enemies are more interested in shooting the boat anyway. If they're in the water, the last thing they want is to be hard to see.

@@aerickaschaffer7663 I think it's just a rule that hoisting is considered safer then attempting to land on a ship, even if it might be theoretically possible. There also the fact most of those helipads are probably mainly intended for use when the ship is anchored, for ship to shore work, so they probably lack much in the way of tie downs of the like to secure a helicopter on deck if there's any sort of notable motion.

The heli they use is about as big and heavy as they come. Landing a helicopter on a ship is tricky, especially if its not the Heli meant for the ship. There is a lot more involved, like strapping the helicopter down with tethers and coordinating a approach with the captain. Its much safer to hoist the swimmer down to my understanding.

The H60 Helicopters they use are Huge for a helicopter, Very few ships have a helipad that could accommodate such a large aircraft. Its also not easy to land a helicopter on a ship even when seas/winds are calm and visibility is good. Pilots are usually briefed in advanced and/or specifically trained on landing on a certain ship. Its also usually not done in anything but perfect conditions. A Ships helipad makes a great hoisting platform, and the CG crew are extremely well trained in safely executing hoist recoveries.
