Actually, that was what he INTENDED to say, but the final pronounciation sounds rather like "springen" = "jumping" or "jump" in German. As stated in the clip's introduction, I have marked that mispronounciation in order to point out that slight inaccuracy.

After a few decades I finally understood what one of the German soldiers was saying in the scene, which was translated in this video with "This is a robbery!" I am from Germany myself and always heard "Das ist ein Überfall!" ("This is a robbery!") which never made sense. He says: "Lass das lieber fallen!" Translated into English: "You better drop that!" Never understood it before.

@@kobra7809 No, he says "Das ist ein Überfall" ("This is a robbery"). @@Daniel4646 I know I'm like a year late to the discussion but I wouldn't be surprised if this part of the script called for a Germanified version of "Stick 'em up." which in this era someone might say in any situation you have a gun pointed at them, commonly in robberies. 100% Conjecture but it might explain how this line came to be as "stick 'em up" and "this is a robbery" tend to be synonymous in specific American English contexts of the period.

@@hollin220 I don't think that's right; the Duden defines "Gewehr" as "a gun with a long barrel and a bolt, usually intended for firing from the shoulder". Generic "gun" would most likely just be "Waffe" (weapon) or "Schusswaffe" (shooting weapon), or, if you want to refer to handguns specifically, "Pistole"/"Revolver" or formally "Handfeuerwaffe" (hand fire weapon).

Uniform inaccuracies are often fun to point out. 1. German officers even in the SS didn't wear Mussolini style gray uniforms like seen at 4:18 in actuality it would have been a field gray, often a brownish or greenish gray color often called "Field Gray." Either that or White and or Black uniforms and when they were 'Gray' it was often a far darker shade of gray similar to what Himmler would often been seen wearing. 2. Same scene the field caps worn by the enlisted men wouldn't exist until the later years of WWII. 3. The Desert Uniforms seen shortly after didn't exist yet. Also a 1940/41 creation. Basically Afrika Korp didn't exist yet so nor would their uniforms.
@thEannoyingE
@thEannoyingE 2 күн бұрын
The film was set in 1936-38, none of the DAK uniforms existed yet. The black uniforms were mostly for parade or official use, not to be worn in settings like a cave. That would be field gray uniforms, especially the tank sequence.

The German dub smoothed over some of those lines and improved them. For example "Den Kübelwagen springen!" (lit. "Jump the Kübelwagen", not with the meaning of "Jump OVER the Kübelwagen", but sheer nonsense instead) became the much more sensible "Den Kübelwagen absprengen!" (Blow the Kübelwagen off), as it's stuck on their turret. "Was wichtiges, mein Herr." became the much more formal "Ein Eiltelegramm aus Berlin, mein Herr!", "An urgent telegram from Berlin, Sir!". The lady behind the fireplace was not redubbed, but I've always thought she pronounces "Alarm" on the wrong syllable", the first instead of the second "a". On the dirigible, the Sturmbannführer and his lackey climb aboard with "Noch nicht losfliegen! Wir kommen an Bord!" (Don't lift off yet, we're boarding!) and Indy asks everyone for their "Flugschein" instead of their "Fahrschein", as a Fahrschein is used for train voyages and public transport. Vogel also responds to Indy's request with "Quatsch!" ("Rubbish!") instead of "Weg!". Periscope guy like fireplace lady wasn't redubbed because he's the only one to deliver his line naturally and without an accent.

As a German, I have to say that unfortunately you can usually hear when the actors are not native speakers. Oddly enough, this happens in many major Hollywood films. You can sometimes hear very strong accents and incorrect intonations. However, some of the non-professional actors appear to be native speakers.
@Daniel4646

I am german too and you are right. On the other hand, while I am quite proficient in english grammar and vocabulary, I can't always pinpoint the different english accents and where they come from. I hear a difference between Americans and British people, but don't ask me wether that American comes from New York or Minnesota, or wether the Brit is from London or Manchester. And when Australians come in, it gets even more complicated. I hear *A* difference, but can't put my finger on what it really is, because that subtlety comes from being fully immersed in a language. That's why we can tell a Bavarian from a Saxon and a person from Berlin from a person from Cologne, or like you said, an English speaking person trying German dialogue, but our anglophonic friends cannot.

Indy's dialogue is the Italian voice actor throughout, even when he speaks German. Here you can listen to the entire movie in audio format for the blind: watch?v=w3fjleAqI8o at 1 hour 11 minutes 28 seconds is the scene with the treasure chest in the Sultan's palace. So there's some inconsistent or incorrect German grammar. So what? This movie was made for an American audience and if Nazi party members and soldiers are portrayed as blundering bufoons is that such a bad thing? The best memory I have of this movie was watching it at the cinema with my parents. There were a small contingent of young German students in the auditorium who found great amusement in the line spoken by the soldier on the tank who extends the periscope and says "These Americans - they fight like women!". Thereafter, when Indy kicks the periscope causing the young whippersnapper to be clunked soundly in the back of his head, those of us in the auditorium of a more English persuasion laughed in a much louder and more exaggerated manner. It was a light-hearted exchange intended to put those young upstarts firmly in their place but not maliciously so. They turned out to be a group of very charming, warm and polite young men.
