One app I would very much recommend to anyone seeking to lower their phone usage, or "putting the cookie jar away", is the app Daywise. It makes notifications so much cleaner because you choose at what time of the day you want to see them, and they appear in a batched way. It really helps because you aren't called upon to check you phone every few seconds!
@yellit19754 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s great that with ios14, Apple have implemented their version of an app drawer; something we Android users have had for years. 😂 if you need to change your iPhone 7, the iPhone SE 2020 might be the best option for you. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said in the video. I’ve gone from having every app under the sun on my phone to only having the essentials and some like Uber / Bolt that I use occasionally but life is easier if they’re installed when I need them.
@Kefford6664 жыл бұрын
Instead of going to app library and pressing search you can just drag down on the homescreen and start typing the app name in spotlight search. The results are a little different but if you know what you're looking for, it means fewer steps to get to an app and you don't have to stretch up to tap in the search bar at the top of the app library screen.

I achieved done 1 month of social apps distancing back in June and July, however I needed to be informed of what is going on and where (anti government protests), hence had Facebook back on, and from there things just spiraled down and am back to 2h screen time a day. I should get back to social app distancing I really do believe this is deteriorating ones ability to focus. Thanks for the vid, awesome work as always.

It is definitely a good balance, I went without a smart phone for most of 2020 and it didn't increase my productivity but it did remove a lot of distraction.

I deinstalled all my social media weeks ago as well and I really enjoyed it so far. Instead of checking my smartphone I read a book on my Kindle instead. I also found that I'm spending a lot more time with my hobbies instead of sitting on my phone.

I have a new iphone and even a ipad but I still get bored. 1. I have Instagram but set a specific time for checking updates. 2. I have Facebook but get bored with my feed. I have removed a lot of people on my friends list and muted pages/people that I'm not really interested 3. KZbin - I don't really have anything more interesting to watch except when you (my subscriptions) upload new videos 4. I have a day job but I efficiently do my tasks hence gaining few extra hours to unwind 5. Netflix/Apple TV - welp, same ol' contents 6. Mobile gaming - I set a specific time or limit for playing Probably we have different ways on how we use tech. I use it mainly to communicate and a bit of entertainment. It is not something that will keep me hooked. I still need outside interaction and exploration.

I have an iPhone 7+, too! Longest I’ve had a phone, amazingly. I’m keeping mine because it works great, I don’t want to be e-wasteful aaaaand I just slammed down some serious cash to re-do a major part of my house so I can make the space more enjoyable, comfortable and useable for me and my family.

Very interesting ideas. My wife and I have made a decision to eat meals without any distractions. No phones or tv: just eat and talk. It’s hard at first but a side effect is that you end up eating less when you’re not staring at a screen.

I'm having to upgrade my phone this time, sadly, due to a failing battery in my 1st gen iPhone SE. But I keep my social media apps several pages deep in folders and have all notifications except specific email and WhatsApp accounts (I mute most group chats) turned off. You need to take charge of your phone, not let it take charge of you!

Great tips Sir! "Apple's" goal in their product design is definitely the opposite of minimalism.... side note, get rid of that debt! Talk about a massive step in simplifying ones life.... thanks for the great video.
@dereklawr4 жыл бұрын
thank you, this is so important! during quarantine it's so hard to avoid the phone and esp. apps like youtube, but they absolutely don't contribute to significant happiness. it'd be interesting to also hear about more strategies to combat technology addition, esp. how you can pull yourself away with other activities, despite being minimalist and maybe there being fewer things to do. (also - the absolute worst thing is when you spend so much time on social media that you're bored of it, but still can't bring yourself to put the phone down cause you don't know what else you'd rather be doing...)

One thing I would like to add, and this is from a personal experience. When I moved to XR, my usage considerably increased due to the screen size and the battery life compared to how I used my 1st gen iPhone SE. My advice, stick with smaller device that doesn't have huge battery. It will force you to use it less. Looking at smaller screen isn't as satisfying as looking at a larger one. And the battery life will always encourage you to turn it off and put it in your pocket. I may just sell my XR and go for the new SE or the 12 mini for this sake.

Excellent video and very timely at the same time because I’m currently in the process of using the Screen Time feature on my iPhone 7 in order to limit my digital usage. I use my iPhone far too much for my liking. Luckily I keep myself fit with regular exercise, but I want to replace my high digital usage by getting back into reading more books. Going to limit myself to the following: Twitter (15 mins each weekday and 20 mins on the weekends) KZbin (30 mins each weekday and 1 hour on the weekends) Thanks again for the excellent coverage.

Daniel, thanks for showing us a great way on how to find more mindspace freedom! Plenty of times I wanted to switch to a flip phone because of the very reasons you mentioned, but I found that I would have more frustrations with that than just heavily pairing down my iPhone into a beautiful minimalist tool. (Although, I have been keeping my eyes on KaiOS.)

Awesome video! Just pre ordered the iphone 12 pro max - I was really thinking a lot of how much this phone will improve my life and what kind of value it will give me. I hope, that the huge size makes it a bit annoying to keep it around and that I would leave it from time to time, on the other hand when I really need a phone, I hope it provides the better experience :) Sounds weird to buy a highend phone to use it less :D but it worked for me in past
