After the match he [Medvedev] talked to reporters about the incident: "First of all, that's a good thing. It was fun," he said. "If it would be a breakpoint it would be less fun, I'm telling you." Medvedev says he looked up the word hindrance on Google Translate just to get a better understanding of the situation. "For me, the thing is that either they should change the name of the rule, because "hindrance," I looked at it on Google Translate, because I was not sure what it means. I thought it meant disturbance, like to disturb somebody. I was right. You can ask Bublik if I disturbed him by saying "Sorry." He will say no. I had the smash, which I would never miss in my life. I actually put it away. "Even if he jumped like, he couldn't get the ball. So again, there was no hindrance. There was no disturbance. Yeah, it's about the rules. Same about the rule where if the rain stopped the match for one hour or 45 minutes, why do I still have no toilet breaks left? It's a new match. I mean, there are some rules that should maybe considered to, I don't know, to be more precise or whatever. Because again, there was no hindrance. So, yeah, that's all I have to say."

@@mitchellsewell275 You're the only person close to getting this right. The rule regards the player making the NEXT play on the ball being put off by actions/words etc made by the opponent. Medvedev himself was making the NEXT play AFTER the words/hindrance - Bublik had already deflected the ball before he spoke. This was the point Medvedev was making but gets ignored. Bublik can't be hindered because he's already played the ball and it's possibly crossed the net at that point - and/or if he was hit the ball is dead. Taking that as the sequence of events (and one doesn't have to!) the hindrance called is flawed and a replay should've been the sensible move.

ITF/ATP: Please start a point system for the referees. It should include: 1. common sense; 2. professionalism; 3. fairness; 4. wisdom; 5. experience ... not necessarily in that order. Anyone remember that referee calling time violation on Kyrgios when he was already in serving motion ?? Same thing. Just like in any other situation, companies, governments, etc - there are just people out there who are misguided by their ego. I think they need to be supervised . Some of them are clearly incapable of refereeing.

If a tennis player commits some kind of misconduct, he will face big charges from ATP or ITF. Umpires can commit the most outrageous mistakes, change the course of a match, and even though nothing happens to them. umpire needs to understand the meaning of 'hindrance', namely, to hinder someone, and his 'sorry' did not hinder Bublik at all as he was flat on his ass!
@jboww2121

From the rules, speaking while the ball is in play is a hindrance, they’re not supposed to leave many calls to opinion. Ppl will complain if the rules aren’t specific and complain if they are. It’s unfortunate cuz no way bublik will win that point, but yes it does qualify as a hindrance.
@frasermacdonald6256

@@jboww2121 you're wrong. The rule is as follows: "When a player is hindered while playing a point, caused by the deliberate act of the opponent or the opponent’s partner, the player shall be awarded the point." This was not deliberate and was not even a hindrance.
@jboww2121
@jboww2121 2 жыл бұрын
@@frasermacdonald6256 no i’m not wrong. It was deliberate. He made the decision to speak. Did he deliberately intend to hinder him? No but that ultimately was done by medvedev, nothing made him speak. That’s the issue, it can’t be left up to opinion about what hinders, talking during the point especially to an opponent will be considered a hindrance. That’s why so many arguments start. Same thing with serena and stosur 2011 USO final. It’s unfortunate, but bc they prematurely spoke or yelled, their opponent is awarded the point, bc they made the decision themself to speak or yell. I’m not saying he had a chance of winning the point. But the rules aren’t written to leave everything up for debate about whether it is or isnt

"The definition of the intentions varies, hence the different outcomes for the exact same scenario. Deliberate Hindrance refers to the act of doing something with the purpose of disrupting your opponent as they are hitting the ball." #1 It has to be deliberate disruption. #2 the key words are "AS THEY ARE HITTING THE BALL" Bublik already hit the ball back when the apology was said. #3 If it is deliberate, players loses point, if it was accidental hindrance, point is replayed. My take: No deliberate motive to disrupt, no call. Besides, the ball hit Bublik anyway, point was already over by the time apology was said.

OK, so according to you a player can talk just after the opponent hit the ball, and continues to talk until the opponent is going to hit, accordingly to the rule you emphasis: "AS THEY ARE HITTING THE BALL" I don't know from where your rule is coming out, for myself I learned to do not talk as long as the ball is in play. So Medvedev talked during the point, then he loses the point, that's it. Why a so drastic rule? Because it simplifies the case.

The problem is not the rule. The problem has been that the referee has very badly interpreted the rule. At no time does Daniil bother Bublik. It was also a point won by the Russian with no possibility of Bublik winning it. Therefore, very bad the chair umpire.
