You should try the Mountain light for a long run. Ive had mine for three years, and I have been using them mountain hiking in Norway, so they have been put to the test. I can highly recomend them. They are buy far the most confertable moutain boots Ive ever had. From day one they have been comfy and sturdy. Been out for 8 hour walks, with no pain or blisters.

I have this exact pair of boots and I can say this much... I need to have mine recrafted because I wore them out in the sole. Some pros and cons from my own experience. Cons first, because I always want my bad news upfront. They're stiff as a board and after break in they fair better, but they're rather rigid as far as boots go. The stiffness seems to stem from such a dense sole material which is long wearing, but lacks stickiness so it's a tradeoff. Salomons in my experience are easily the gold standard for traction in a boot, but they wear out in a season if you are remotely hard on them. The material in the sole is soft, but sticky and gives you loads of traction which means it wears out quicker. I had this very pair of boots as a daily wear for two years and now they wait to be resoled. I found mine to run tight, which is typical for this boot, and once broken in, it still felt a hair tight, but much better. Keep this in mind when shopping. Cost. I'm waiting to send mine off because cost alone. It's $80 for a resole, if I recall correctly, which is almost a third the price I paid. Well worth it, but it's why they live in my closet instead of on my feet. Being recraftable is a boon, but do account for cost. The pros! They're more nimble than my other Danner Rainforest boots. There's more flexibility in the ankle which pays dividends on specific tasks. The soles are identical, and the stiffness between them much the same. I don't find these to be very "technical" boots, as they're pretty clunky and it takes a lot of getting used to before you become "one with the boot" as it were. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's something to bear in mind, these aren't Nikes. That flap over the tongue is massive. It helps immensely for protection! It will collect schmoo in those bellows so make a point every season or after a hard trip to clean it out. They're more comfortable than they first feel. Once you put a few miles in you have doubt. Then if you commit, you really change your mind and become enamored. They're excellent outdoor boots, however I found them a bit slippy on anything with moss or lacking aggressive texture to meet the basic tread design. Again, that rigid compound will surprise you when it comes to traction. The tread design is fair, but I've been spoiled with boots that will tolerate literally anything. These will not. They'll outlast anything.

Those mountain light boots are some of the best boots I’ve ever had, of course next to my Danner RAT boots. Also the mountain light was real popular back in the 70’s and 80’s. I totally recommend these boots to any one who loves a good RETRO hiking boot.

Been looking at Danners for a while now. Struggling to decide between Mountain Pass and Mountain Light. For casual use.
@mateotrono4 жыл бұрын
thewookiee74 definitely the Mountain Light for longevity. Also depending on the leather it can be very supple after conditioning and wear. That being said, if you’re looking for a hiker for casual use I highly recommend the Fracap M120s, I just picked up a pair and I like em more than my Danners instantly, I don’t know if it’s the construction or what but they were more comfortable off the bat and though a similar silhouette just look sleeker. I will say though if you want something for a wetter climate the goretex in the Danners is nice seeming but somehow makes them too warm? Idk I’m not a materials expert

I own a pair of Mountain Light boots. They are absolutely beautiful boots, which look better with age. That said they aren’t perfect with a few flaws. 1) The word ‘Light’ in the name is a misnomer as they aren’t really 2) They don’t come with a midsole and you really need to get one (factor in when buying as you need to make sure your feet still fit after the midsole goes in) 3) The one piece tongue always slips to one side.... You cannot hold the laces through the tongue holding either 4) The heal backs have no cushioning and over time a hole has appeared in the rear fabric (which is part of the Gore-Tex) Although this hasn’t affected the waterproofing as I’ve worn then through deep water. I bought some pads from Amazon which covers the hole and cushions the rears. On the plus side, they have amazing grip, waterproof. Look great and you feel good with them on But, if you’re a serious hiker, the weight maybe too much in reality. There are far cheaper boots out there that will do this a lot more comfortably. That said, you could easily scale a mountain in this with the incredible grip and foot protection. Ideal for the a Urban Hiker Definitely a boot for the heart and not the head.

You shouldn’t need goretex on one-piece heavy leather mountain boots, will make them unbearably hot and sweaty on hikes outside winter and if you get the inside of boots wet (fall into a river, get snow over the top, etc..) they will take days to dry out properly.

These really are the best of the 3. The bull run would probably be the most comfortable for all day wear. But the Mountain light are the nicest looking, and would last longer. Would prefer blackened lace loops though, to blingy. Edit just seen the gortex lining hmm puts me off, can make a smelly boot and it deteriorates over time and becomes useless.

@@Heywoodthepeckerwood Thank you. In the meantime I ordered the shoes from a retailer in The Netherlands and the size recommended by the sizing tool on the Danner web site was correct. Provided you have a valid reference (shoe in one of the brands listed by Danner that fits the way you like), you can trust the recommended size. The shoe is wide indeed. My first experience after a hike of 11 km is that the leather collar around the heel is quite thick and hurts a bit. May be part of the break in? I also find the absence of an inner sole quite strange and disturbing.
@HerrHarlock Жыл бұрын

i have narrow feet due to a shallow instep. the salomon 4d's fit me perfect because they have that first deep set quick lace loop. I am on my 3rd pair of them... which is not great because they are expensive boots. but they break in quick and have been excellent. i am working on breaking in the mountain light IIs, and i almost returned them because of how roomy the heel box was. thankfully, as the sole has worn in more and the side leather has finally become soft, the heel hold feels better than the salomon 4Ds, which I got at the same time. I have high hopes for the mountain light IIs. I used to do 40 hours a week in the woods with the salomons, and they bonded to my foot and have been amazing. if i can get that in something that can be re-soled i will be stoked. also, with that thick ass tongue, do I want to be making sure the fold over part overlaps the leather connected to the lacing? or just let it go.

@colesisler5822 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming your mountain lights are unlined. It’s ashame, really, because currently, danner is lining all their boots. Meaning what would otherwise be a boot that lasts 10-15 years as yours have will maybe make it a couple years until you wear through the lining. They’re fantastically simple boots in every way otherwise, which is why it is frustrating. Danner just had to add an unnecessary mesh liner to shorten the life of their boots drastically.
