I heard of this happening to Davey Lopes, back in 1986. He was traded from the Cubs to the Astros, and played for the Astros in the second part of a game that had been postponed in the middle of the game, where he had played for the Cubs in the first half. I heard about this nearly forty years ago, but have never confirmed it to be true.

Not only was this the first game that a player has ever played for both teams in the majors, but Jansen had to play defensively as the catcher in the very same at bat that he himself started as the batter. if you wrote this into a screenplay for a movie, it wouldn't fly, because no one can stretch suspension of disbelief THAT much 😆

Has happened a couple of times in the NBA, most notably with Eric Money playing for both the 76ers and the Nets in the same game in 1979

The corollary to this was Joel Youngblood in 1982. He played a day game (for the Mets) in Chicago and got a hit. In the the third-inning, he gets pulled because he got traded to the Expos, who were playing a night game in Philly. He flies out to Philly and singles as a pinch hitter in the 7th inning. Amazingly, both hits were off of future HoFers! (Fergie Jenkins and Steve Carlton)

Joel Youngblood & Danny Jansen are answers to very obscure baseball trivia questions

It wasn't a makeup game, it was the conclusion of a suspended game. That's why it worked that way

Yeah, that had confused me a bit.

And Jansen was not on first ... he was at the plate when the original game was suspended and had a 0-1 count on him.

If he had had an 0-2 count, he would have been "credited" with the strikeout.

It's strange to see Jansen in a non-Blue Jays uniform. Sad to see him go. I was shocked but the Jays have to rebuild and it looks like it's paying off in the second half of the season. Baseball can be a strange sport and that's why I like it. Just when you think you've seen it before this happens.

Interesting they can have a different roster for the same game.
@nathanweiss51742 ай бұрын
The way rosters change so much more now, they would have to allow for changes. The players still on the team have to resume their same spot in the lineup or once removed can't come back as usual. The other fun thing that made this possible is that both teams used their backup Catcher for this game, making the use of Jensen for Boston natural and not forced for the oddity of it.

Does anyone know if it a legal play to for the shortstop on the stolen base to act like he has the ball and fake like he is tagging the runner.
@MrMaelstrom072 ай бұрын
As long as you don't physically hold him down, it's legal (in OBR aka Pro). In high school, a "fake tag" is illegal.

Is it a written or unwritten MLB rule that forbids "fraternizing with the opponent"?
@MrMaelstrom072 ай бұрын
It would have been cooler if he had an 0-2 count on him, then his pinch hitter struck out. BUT he, as the new catcher, dropped it and had to throw it or tag out his own pinch hitter. He'd get the putout (or assist) AND log a batted K at the same time.

The craziest part is that he switched teams in the middle of his at bat!

Been on a couple of teams where I never got in the game at all, they wouldn't even let me sit in the dugout, in fact some even said I should have had to pay to get in the ball park?

he didn’t play for both teams in the game, there was a pinch hitter who played

Meh. When I first saw the headlines, I thought it was cool, but it's just a technicality. If it had happened mid-game on the same day, then it'd be worth talking about.
@set9212 ай бұрын
That's nothing. There were players in the game that didnt play for either team in June, which is how its being logged. Kinda dumb that any current streak excludes this game.
