@Dante198836 жыл бұрын
Hi there! What is considered a “best” cover is very subjective. I chose these particular covers because they are known in the comic book community as being classic. Whether one likes the cover or not is a different story, but many would agree that these books became iconic not only because they are some sort of key issue, but also because they have a cover that many collectors admire. The line between iconic and best can be a very fine one. Thanks for commenting!

You oppinion, your list, I just think its unfair to call this "the best COMIC BOOK covers". No you have only included the covers from the superhero genre, which is not representative of the entire medium. Its like if I were to make a video of "the best book covers of all time " and only included mystery novels.

I am sorry, but I don’t agree with the title. Maybe saying this is a video of some of the most iconic cover would have been better. I just feel that more modern artists have created better covers. Also, how can you give all credit for New Mutants #87 to Liefeld? McFarlane did work on it, as well. I mean, his name is on the cover.

Wow a best comics covers video, with nothing by Brian Bolland, Dave Stevens or Adam Hughes, and not a single Sensation Comics cover or even a Wonder Woman cover from the 40's. Come to think of it I didn't see any Carl Barks covers on the list either and there was no Joe Kubert covers either and one of my personal favorite covers of the 70's was Tarzan #207 (first DC Comics issue). There are a ton of funny book covers from the 40's through 60's that saw no representation either (and I don't mean Uncle Scrooge as all of his best were done by Carl Barks. So I get that these are what you consider to be the best, but I'm just afraid that we will have to disagree on what constitutes best. The main purpose of my reply even after such a long time since you posted the list was to get you to look in to some of these other artists and covers, even if it's only by perusing some on the web. Dell/Gold Key, Charlton, ACG, Fawcett, Archie and Harvey all have at least a few covers that are worth a mention. Don't get me wrong, some of the covers you mentioned are some of my all time favorites as well. But many of them I passed up when they were released as ok, but not worth picking up based on the cover art. Just my 2 cents worth, and now that pennies are no longer made of copper you can take that for a whole lot less if you like. I do like your channel btw, and plan to hit that sub button right after I post this.

I know art is subjective, but some of the art covers are not very inspiring. You pointed out lots of popular comics but doesn't necessarily mean they are good. Instead of talking about their popularity or first appearances, explain why you think its good. How the cover use: line, form, shape, color, texture, value, and space. What are the art principles that draws the eye into the image and what elements hold the viewer attention? I like your premise, just need to work on your execution. Keep at it.

Man I am halfway through this video and so far i don't agree with a single selection. You seriously think a Hulk issue with pink and fluorescent green is a good color scheme? And what's with the obsession with Rob Liefield? His covers are a mess! I'm an artist, and the first thing you learn (which Liefield apparently never did) is that simplicity is everything. Liefeild's everything but the kitchen sink approach is just terrible IMO. I'm not knocking you or your tastes, Dante, I just disagree.
@Dante198836 жыл бұрын
Oh no problem! I can respect that. And I love hearing from people who are actual artists. I’m not an artist, I just select partially based on what I like and partially based on what is considered “good,” “classic,” or “iconic” in the comic book collecting hobby. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@shinichi82136 жыл бұрын
Your comment makes you sound like somebody who likes to say "as an artists". Im interested to hear who is teaching you art because "the first thing you learn is simplicity is everything" is a gross overgeneralisation, and if you really believe this then you have misunderstood what your teachers have been teaching you. The idea of simplicity is an idea created to HELP artists and to guide newcomers to create and analyse works of VISUAL art that is meant to guide them with a starting point; it teaches you to only use and present what you need, to give the person observing the art mental breathing space. But this is not a ""rule"" Unless you are learning art in Vienna in 1840 then you're being taught art on the foundations of a variety of movements ranging from renaissance to modernist. In both these very wide movements there are pieces of visual art that are world renowned that depict hectic and messy scenes, far from being "simple".
@Noodleydoo6 жыл бұрын
BlueIncal--nobody is teaching me anything because I've been making video games, doing comic art, t-shirt/poster art, and working in advertising for thirty years so you and I aren't even on the same planet in terms of experience with art. It is clear from your dopey post that you misinterpreted what I was saying. This video is about comic COVERS. Covers, like t-shirt art, "read" best if you can recognize them from a distance. If you notice, most logos (Like Coca Cola) are simple, direct and instantly recognizable. There is a reason for that. SIMPLICITY. A comic book cover should follow completely different rules than the art inside. Look at the cover of Killing Joke, Marvels #2 or Black Panther #1 (Coates)--they are classics due to their striking simplicity.

Speedy was Green Arrow's ward - Not Green Lantern's. And what you said was a new Green Lantern costume was actually a whole new Green Lantern.

Error on my part about the ward thing apologies! Thanks, I had no idea it was a totally new Green lantern. I never read the golden age lantern stories. Thanks for commenting!

I like "Silver Surfer (1988) # 1 by the french Artist Moebius". By the way: John DiFool is one of the best Comic-Series ever written :-) "John DiFool" (other name: THE INCAL) created the whole style of BLADE RUNNER and a lot of other movies. You need to check out THE INCAL, if you have not yet. I think maybe its the most important comic book of all times from Europe.

@jeangentry66566 жыл бұрын
With due respect, I don't think this a really a "best covers" list. I know that best covers is inherently subjective, but you aren't providing any explanation as to WHY these covers are good, outside of "first appearance of famous character in this issue!". That doesn't explain what makes the cover art good. I wish you had gone more into what makes the cover good ART, stuff like layout, color usage, artstyle, etc.
@Dante198836 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for the suggestion... I don’t know much about art technique so I wouldn’t do these covers any justice by trying to explain artistic aspects of these covers. I chose these covers because they are revered by collectors as being the best due to the issue being some sort of key or being a “classic” cover. I humbly concede to the fact that I’m unsure as to what make these covers “classic” other than they became part of cultural zeitgeist at the time. Thank you for commenting!

I was going to be snarky with this comment but you really seem to enjoy and love comic books so I'll try and not be a dick about this. You should really consider changing the title of this video to " My Favorite Covers" or "Famous Covers' ( Thanks you, Helrod. See their comment below ). Some are the best covers, but others...just aren't. And if you want to make a video of "The Best Comic Covers" You really need to add Frank Frazetta's Famous Funnies run (#'s 209 - 216) and his cover of Weird Science Fantasy # 29. That book alone has been voted the best cover of all time several times over. By some of the most prestigious comic book organizations ever... This wasn't a bad video but I think you could do better with a little more research.....And BTW The cover of New Mutants # 87 is a rip off of Avengers # 145.
@Dante198836 жыл бұрын
Yeah, many have an opinion about the title. My angle with ‘best’ are the covers that are culturally significant... a lot of people have been suggesting great covers, so I may have to do another in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting.
