From message boards to everyday lessons, I constantly see people making the same mistakes with rotational swings.
In this video Dan lays out 5 of the most common misunderstandings so you can figure out what's going wrong with your swing.

Great video Dan. The weight shift to the left is tricky. This shift actually is what ends the backswing, causes a physical stop and counter force to the arms going backwards. The older players shown in the video from that Hogan video clip all catch the transfer with their upper left outer thigh muscles to prevent the shift from going left too much. This muscular flexion brings the knee back to address position and then you can turn left once the left leg has posted. I find that all my timing issues happen when I let my hands carry on but I stop turning the shoulders on the backswing through the weight transfer to the left. This makes that left arm collapse into my chest. This causes stuck arms and improper sequencing leading to duck hooks or dead straight pushes. Turning, timing and tempo are everything mostly.

This is a great vid Dan -it fits in so well with your other Hogan concepts/themes. My swing has been progressing over the last year and over the last month I have been working on the right elbow down move, however, I still kept getting stuck behind and my videos clearly showed that despite a 'better' elbow move I was still stuck and flipping/early extending at the bottom. However, last week I watched your video about left arm separation and started some training to help that - well this week I had a great range session and really started to get somewhere! I watched this video again tonight and realised how important this part of the jigsaw is, but also how you can learn new bits of info EVERY time you watch it! I am becoming a serial repeat watcher of your content because I seem to learn more each time - especially if its over a month since Ive seen it! Really looking forward to your 're-mastered' content and your new stuff. In fact your vids are so informative I'm starting to think I'm cheating, however, I won't feel too guilty until I'm swinging it like Justin! Keep up the improved content and I'm sure your subs will go up! Thanks, Nick.

Hi Dan, excellent video. Regarding the use of the arms and separation in the downswing, all those years ago when John Jacobs wrote 'Practical golf' he pointed out that top pros would emphasize the body action as they had to essentially 'calm down' their arms and not create such an 'in to out' move - whereas less proficient players often needed more arm separation ('swish') to make their swing shallow. It's still good observation. Of course, Hogan wrote 'Five Fundamentals' as his version of a largely anti-hook method and after years and years of his body getting used to hitting hundreds of golf balls every day. Incidentally, Justin Rose does use (and seems to practice) a lot of arm separation in the downswing but prefers a shallow plane through impact (as preferred by Sean Foley). Each pro looks for a 'different model' to follow, often linked to their own build and shot preferences etc. Keep up with the excellent videos, Michael

This relates to your point about lateral movement. Just had a look at a slo mo of Jason Day on KZbin, hitting a driver. At no point are his hips moving only laterally. In fact the rotation is beginning before he gets to the top of his backswing. My point of reference was his belt buckle. You can easily see the rotational movement of the hips. That is not to say that he is not moving target-wise with his lower body, but there is no separate lateral move.

Interesting the timing of things. I was just starting to work on getting my left arm to separate as I feel it's tucked in too tightly on the down swing causing some issues. Thank you for detailing what each of these issues are and what they could be causing ... great information for those of us trying to produce a pivot driven swing.

How come Dan can look at the swings of the top pros and see the lateral shift before the rotation whereas others seem to miss it? Maybe something to do with being a Hogan swing fan?

Really interesting Dan, I have recently had a lesson with a "famous" golf coach who insisted I keep the left arm glued to my chest! I was also given the golf glove drill and I have never hit the ball as badly as I do now!! I also have stared shanking short iron shots! I will study this video again as it seems to highlight a lot of my issues. Many thanks J

This made a big difference. Coming from stack and tilt I was trying to keep the left arm connected in the back swing.

Dan, I am 72 and reasonably athletic but not very flexible with the left arm in the backswing which I have to bend a bit. My question is - is this rotational method safer for my back at my age or should I use more of a arm and hand flip swing to minimise any back problems? Thanks.

Brilliant Dan, best video so far! Professional production and superb content! As usual you have almost too much teaching content packed into just one video. Could you follow this up with a separate vid for each issue that you have identified, with perhaps more focus on the way to overcome each fault? Ps Like the new hair do, very David Beckham lol

George Gankas, who many people look at these days, says rotation and then weight shift from the top. I dont get that, maybe you can explain the difference between him and you since you say lateral movement and THEN turn/rotation. Thanks, love your videos!!!

Dan If your tutorials were on TV rather than KZbin I would gladly pay the full TV Licence even if I never watched any other programme. Been engrossed by the game and technique / instruction for thirty odd years. I love your enthusiam and clear instruction. My flat laid off swing would probably be too much for even you to fix and have you looking for a new job. Thanks again.

Ben Hogans left arms begins to come off his chest, when his hips are already 20 -30 degree open to the targetline. By then the rib cage (thorax) has begun to decelerate. From top of DS, Ben Hogan wrote, his arms dropped(gravity) into the Slot(5L) Left arms is still hugging his chest as he drops into the Slot.

what is a non rotational swing....because I thought Justin Rose was Sean Foley stack and tilt..... I've been taught stack and tilt for the last 3 years it was great for my iron shots but as it got more technical my swing has suffered...and now I'm a bit lost.....I feel happier rotating......are there any good rotational swing coaches in the south east of England I'm near London.....and could do with some help....I'm off 9...but really struggling to stay there

You don.t know what you're talking about. Every example you have given rely on a misinterpreted concept. And I'm NOT going to tell you what it is. What I will tell you...there are only about a dozen PGA golfers and one LPGA golfer that will apply an alternative objective, that would negate the misconception until contact of the ball, because they rely on this misconception, after contact of the ball, YOU lack any knowledge of a golf swing.
