After receiving about 500 comments correcting us, we now understand how Dan-zig is pronounced. One of us (Ryan lol) thought he heard somewhere that there was a different pronunciation than how it is spelled. We were obviously wrong. Our apologies! Let's move on! Just to put this in a context you two will understand, Rick Rubin produced this album, he saw Glenn play a show with his band Samhain, recognized talent, and signed him to his label Def American. Oh wow! So cool and unexpected that you guys did Danzig. In case you guys didn’t know, the singer (Glenn Danzig) was the frontman of the very influential punk band the Misfits. There was definitely an undertone of dark comedy in that band and I think it carries over to his later projects. Then again, he might take himself completely seriously... who knows!? I laughed a lot, but you guys got a lot wrong 1. Danzig definitely takes himself very seriously, the last thing he's trying to do is have fun. 2. Danzig is very influenced by blues; it's simple riffing but intentionally so. If you listen to the second album "Lucifuge" You might be more impressed by composition, or less, who knows with you guys. 3. I think the Danzig albums have aged well and really don't sound similar to other 80's albums at the time. There's little reverb and the mixing/mastering is mind boggling. 4. It's common to either love him or hate him, I would suggest going beyond the first album, and maybe delve backwards into some Misfits (the Horror-Punk band he fronted in the 70's and 80's)

This is probably the first I've heard this song since 1990, but I have to disagree with you guys - I think it HAS aged well. It's like a blues song in its simplicity and (to me) emotional power. I still get a strong demonic (in a good way!) vibe off of the riffs. As for Glenn's singing, "Elvis with an edge" or however you put it was spot on. I shudder to think what the notoriously thin-skinned Mr. Danzig will make of your reaction.
@chrisweedon67997 жыл бұрын
Man you guys were so far off what Danzig is all about. Blues and classic rock based. Think of a modern Elvis. No comedy and funny at all, just great rock n roll.

I dig your videos. Let me educate some clowns here for a minute though. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who knows Danzig's music knows what he's about. He is a legend among legends. This guy, across his entire career, from The Misfits to now, is regarded as one of the most talented singers/songwriters ever, even by artists who are considered the greats. The influence he's had on music is crazy (and his influences are crazy! - they range from Elvis to Black Sabbath to Willie Dixon and Howlin' Wolf). His songs have been covered countless times. He has created genres. He has performed various styles while still sounding like Danzig and has NEVER compromised who he is for the music biz. A true artist and one of the few punk rebels left. He's even written songs for Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. And as for live? Hands down he has no equal. He's a maniac on stage and even in his 60's, he has more intensity than these young geeks today. He's the real thing for sure. The only ones that don't like him are dumb metal-heads that want to pigeonhole Danzig's talent into one style and don't appreciate other sounds. The dude is just himself and nobody else is like it and nobody ever will be. Often imitated but never duplicated!

@Krisfit1387 жыл бұрын
His biggest influences are Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jim Morrison, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, a host of other old blues singers, '50s rock'n'roll, and a ton of '60s garage rock. If you listen to any of those and then Danzig, you'll get it. But, also, if you listen to those, you'll soon be applying your exact criticisms to a bunch of old, classic blues. The criticism may be accurate, but you'd see that early Danzig wasn't far off the mark from his influences. Danzig (the band) '88-'94 was a stripped-down, back-to-the-roots response to the overproduced and overly-poppy music that was out at that time. The guitarist was formerly a jazz guitarist, the bassist was a punk bassist, and the drummer focused on swing-groove playing; this was supposed to be a call-back to the foundation of rock, metal, and punk by getting in touch with the roots of it all again, then repackaging it as an evil "metal-blues." It should also be mentioned that the backing vocals on this album in particular were Metallica. And, no Glenn Danzig was not a fun-loving, light-hearted, party guy. Until the past few years, he took himself way too seriously, and it was rare to see him smile or laugh. This '88 album came 5 years after the Misfits' Earth AD album (review that sometime)! It would be interesting to see you check out these songs (not just this one; but any of 'em) with no knowledge of them, do a reaction, study up on them, and then review them again. You'd def have a different view on them all.

You got danzig so wrong, almost like it's happy music xD it's primal, like blues and early rock but through a heavy metal filter, the line up they had first were a bunch of extremely talended players, john christ is a moster of a guitar player and you have to think, it is actually more difficult to write a simple, good riff that it's able to get stuck in your head than a flashy and super complicated riff that will shine because of its technicality rather than its groove, it is danzig the one that writes the music anyway, the guitar player did do his own guitar solos for this album. The guy speaks a lot of the devil, at times it seems like he believes he is the devil, and he is kinda serious about it so that smile he brings to your face, that way of getting to people almost like feeling that you can dance his music, that's just a clever way to deliver a message of ego, sexuality and devil-ish thoughts. Technically you just had a dance with the devil and you kinda liked it, would be cool if you do another song of him, he has lots of great songs like Long way back from hell, She rides, I don't mind the pain or his most famous song, Mother. Focus on his first 4 records though, he kinda lost it after.

I think your assessment is accurate. Danzig solo and in the Misfiits, was very much about B-movies, Elvis, 50's pop culture... and all things in that zone. There is a campy vibe to it, which I think is intentional. Danzig in someways is like mustard on a hotdog. Not sophisticated, but classic and enjoyable. You are not listening to Danzig, Samhain, or the Misfits for any technical reasons. You are listening because it is fun, like watching a Boris Karloff horror movie or something.

Danzig wrote solid classic rock vibed tunes that you could sing too, but it was drenched in satanism, the occult, and other dark stuff. It wasn't actually popular until Beavis and Butthead kepted playing the live-ish version of Mother. Danzig wasn't supposed to be metal or technical, it based way more into the blues and classic hard rock. And if you ever seen Danzig back in the day, he wasn't in it for laughs.

A drunk fan climbed up the stack of speakers about 15-20’ and jumped into the crowd. Glenn immediately threw done the mic and jump on top of him and beat the living piss out of the guy. Definitely a super nice guy just don’t mess with his stuff! I was about 14. He definitely isn’t really a guy that is a people pleaser. You like him or not he doesn’t care. It is hilarious, the observations you guys are making about Glenn Danzig. This is a guy who will interrupt his own concert, leap off the stage, and pick a fight with a photographer for taking pictures he wasn't supposed to take. Glenn Danzig is a man who takes himself very seriously, or at least he did in his heyday.

Hey guys, loved the review. Danzig's first album is a great foundational work. All the songs are very straightforward and very catchy. I think you guys would really dig songs from Danzig II where he injects even more Blues into the music and delivers fantastic vocal performances. Here's the thing. People either love Danzig, hate Danzig, or don't know Danzig. He likes Roy Orbison and Elvis if that gives you an idea about his "comedic" vocals. (He also wrote a Johnny Cash song if you want to track that down.) Mother, Twist of Cain, It's Coming Down, Not of this World, How the Gods Kill are all pretty good entry points. The first 4 albums and Deth Red Sabaoth are all typically well received. Blackacidevil is almost universally disliked.

Same here - and "Sleepless Nights" is a great introduction to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate's music - it's a beautiful song, and there's a little bit of everything in there: The King's high-pitched wails and low-pitched growls, acoustic and electric guitars, some cool metal riffs along with some great thrashy rhythms and beautiful melodic parts, the works! This is the first time I've heard this song and I disagree with you. Yeah the riff is basic but it sounds good though, and the vocals are good too. Maybe not too great in terms of musicality but I think it's a pretty fun song, will put it in my gym playlist. If you want to react to a masterpiece, here: Rainbow - *STARGAZER*
@them20027 жыл бұрын
WheresYourSuit agreed for sure. It was the first song I learned on guitar so it's definitely a simple riff but man, it's beautiful in its simplicity. Especially the "come alive!!" riff - whatever part of music you'd call that song. It's incredible and the entire song is fun as hell to play.
@novacaine122907 жыл бұрын
I second that, it's simple but it's got that heavy grove that just makes you want to nod along. I also second stargazer, when he made the comment about showmanship I immediately came to the comment section for Dio and more specifically stargazer.

Glenn Danzig (born Glenn Allen Anzalone) took his name from the Free City of Danzig which was formed after WWI. It was also the first city invaded by the Nazi's as they started their attempted domination of Europe (and, indeed, the world). He was one of the founding members of Misfits, an iconic American punk rock band.

The cool thing about this album is that it was originally released on Def Jam and was produced by Rick Rubin. Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, played drums on "Tougher Than Leather" by Run DMC. Rick also produced Slayer around this time too. Also.... James Hetfield from Metallica sings backing vocals on this song too. Danzig is a musicians musician.

This was originally done as a Samhain song, on their last album also released in 88' titled "Final Decent". Though that version sounds very different from this version, which lifts it's main guitar riff from a Zeppelin song "In my time of dying". Further tribute to Zeppelin is paid on this Danzig album with his cover of "The Hunter".
