As a kid growing up in Ireland I remember how cool it was to actually see a movie take place in Ireland. Also that banshee gave me nightmares for weeks

+GodOfExploding The only thing I thought that was incorrect with the banshee was the fact that it didn't have that killer wail that banshees are known to have. That "oooohhhh" should have been more like a blood-curdling shriek.

I love Darby O'Gill, Darby always reminds me of my Granddad, who looked sounded, and acted like him. I still remember the nightmare The Banshee gave me as a little kid. Most Irish people I know don't find this movie offensive, they make fun of it like no other (especially Sean Connery playing an Irishman), but don't find it offensive, because they know it was made in good fun by a company that knew very little more than the stereotypes of their culture. They are way more offended by people calling St. Patrick's Day, "St. Patty's Day" rather than "St. Paddy's Day".

Sean The KZbin Hermit Right? Thank you, Sean. The Irish aren't like Americans... They don't get offended by every little thing. Do I see this ever becoming a St. Paddy's staple in Ireland as it is in America... Hell no! But they can easily watch it and have a good laugh.
@sicksaiyan1484
@sicksaiyan1484 8 жыл бұрын
+Jared Gillenwater true enough...although the term "Paddy" as a shorthand for Patrick still carries a negative connotation as it was used by the British as a pejorative. Even so...there are few Irishmen that do take offence at it...save a few uptight people that find something to get pissed off at where St. Patrick's Day is concerned...or if someone really does hurl that at an Irish person as an insult to his culture.

Jared Gillenwater And it usually is the American Irish that this offends the most...it's usually an American Irish that gets sour and butthurt over "plastic paddys" and anything else they consider "cultural misappropriation" or "bastardising" to the holiday. Perhaps they should examine their own traditions...like Corned Beef and Cabbage...in Ireland...if I remember correctly, they did not eat Corned Beef...the Corned Beef was purely an American mod to the dish. Don't get me wrong...I like corned beef...but it's not all that accurate (and I'm not griping about it)...so if the ones pissing and moaning about the "plastic paddys" for the sake of accuracy and purism...they should start with themselves. Otherwise...they should do the next best thing and just look to the field in which they grow their fucks...to see that it should be barren.

The thing about that banshee that the reviews can't show those unfamiliar with the movie is the build up. It doesn't just come out of no where like it does here. as I recall, there is an explanation and a build up leading to the terrifying reveal, the build up has a lot to do with how scary something is.

It is reported on recent Disney History Institute Podcast that Disney had to ask Albert Sharpe to say his lines less authentically in order to be understood. Where I work in Florida, we get a lot of Irish and Northern Brits and Scots. my coworkers claim they can barely understand them. So if Disney reworked this (AND Don't because there's no reason to) the accents would probably have to be moderated.

What blows my mind is that people tell the critic that hes wrong about one of his opinions. Whats even worse is that doug seems to accept that his personal opinion is somehow wrong because people on the internet voted it so and almost recants it each time. Opinions can't really be wrong. An opinion is just what you personally feel about something. If you feel that this was the scariest thing you saw when you were a kid, then that's your opinion and its correct. Just like they are correct in their opinion that it wasn't the scariest thing they saw. If they don't think its the scariest thing, then let them make a video about it. Don't let your personal opinion be superseded by someone else's opinion. Especially in these cases when its literally a video about your opinions. And on a side note. I saw this when I was very young and it blew me away. The effects were great and the story captivated me. And for the record, yes, in my opinion that banshee was creepy as shit.

@MrYTGuy1
@MrYTGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Can you prove any of those things wrong?
@MrYTGuy1
@MrYTGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
I'm just asking for someone to prove objectively that their opinion is right or wrong. You see the reason I asked that is because there is no answer. Opinions are subjective by nature, facts are objective by nature. subjective opinion can't be proven right or wrong. you can't prove that the color orange is pretty because other people have different opinions about that color. I'm asking you how can you know which opinion is correct and which one isn't. Is orange pretty or not? Depends who you ask. Just like racism or homophobia, depends who you ask. The answer by its very nature is subject to personal unobjective influences. Its your opinion that racism is wrong. it also happens to be my opinion. but other people hold different opinions and there's no objective clear way to show which one of those opinions is correct and which one is incorrect. that's why I'm asking for proof. because I'd love for someone to show me an objectively true opinion. I'd love to see it because I know its impossible. Your 'proof' seems to be just another opinion. Which itself needs proof.

Speaking as a descendant of Irish immigrants: I find nothing about this movie offensive, and neither did my parents or grandparents (the first generation born in America). It's a celebration of all things Irish. Stereotypical? Sure. But stereotypes aren't necessarily offensive (including when they're unflattering). Darby looks a ton like my dear departed Grandpa, by the way. And Doug: you were absolutely right for putting the Banshee as your #1 scariest nostalgic thing. When I first saw this movie, those scenes gave me nightmares for *weeks*. And I was in 4th grade at the time, too, long after I'd conquered most of my childhood fears. It still creeps me out in ways other scenes that used to scare me don't anymore.

My husband's half Irish though he was born and raised in the USA; I really wanna show him this movie because I grew up with it. I don't care if it's over the top, it's trying to be fun so it doesn't come off as offensive, and there's a lot of accurate detail going into the various spirits like the Banshee, the Pooka (nightmare horse moment), and the "Headless Horseman" Dullahan. Also I was less terrified of the Banshee as a kid than of the flashy nightmare horse moment for some reason.

The film emerged at a time when Ireland didn't have an established national identity with regards to film making. I would love a full horror film about the banshee she haunted me as a kid. Simply terrifying! Ps as an Irish lady can say I find it hilarious the sterotypes in this film 😂 and also a little low key proud that irish lore gets any mainstream attention . Like that drunk uncle you love and is the life and soul of parties that the rest your family don't want to mention

I don't understand why Disney keeps Song of the South out of circulation but is OK with a film set in 19th century Ireland that portrays Irish people as happy peasants bowing and scraping to the landed gentry. I'm not offended by the film, I love it but I think this is a double standard by Disney.

irish people are among the "least" offended people in the world - we have every stereotype imaginable thrown at us from hollywood, britian etc but it doesnt bother us - we laugh at ourselves most of the time and are fairly easy going that way! we have a long colonial history and have learned to put it behind us. where as America is a very sensitive nation full of various ethnic groups who fight amongst each other - i blame the main-stream media/social media of course... the african americans still have their problems in some states so in that regard it still a hot potato (no irish pun intended)

I now know the name of the movie I hunted so long for!

Looking at films like this, The Quite Man, and Ireland’s Waking Ned Divine, I’d say that playing it up goes hand in hand with the Irishness. Maybe I’m wrong, since I’m only an American with Irish ancestry, but I do know that Disney did consult on this film, and got some Irish actors. I’d honestly love to see a full on Nostalgia Critic review of this, Quite Man, and Ned Divine.

I so admired Janet Munro...she was so fresh and delightful, in this movie and a couple of other Disney films--SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON and THIRD MAN ON THE MOUNTAIN (a really excellent, underrated movie--and the reason why Disneyland has the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction ;-) ).

The banshee effects derived from shooting the original in black-and-white against a black background, then printing the negative, which was enlarged and kept out of focus. Then when adding the color scheme and combining it with an optical printer you get that effects.
