Well, you weren't wrong about having a tutorial on black armor! And I find it particularly useful considering I've been considering a Sisters of Silence army (using proxies for Custodian units) and planned on doing all of their vehicle black to contrast their brass armor. love this tutorial! I personally would just prime in black and paint the yellow on but that's just because I find contrast paints to be a pain to work with if you make a mistake (Learned this the hard way painting Rusted Claw)

Thank you! If you wanna go the traditional painting route, I really recommend priming the mini white rather than black. Due to the transparency of yellow paints it will take a ton of layers of yellow to cover the black otherwise. Not only will this take more time, but it will likely come out noticeably chunky. Even painting on the black armor over the white primer will take less time than trying to get a saturated opaque yellow over a black 😬. primer.

Quick question, if you wanted to use black legion black contrast instead of templates for their armour would you still highlight with fenrisian grey or is there a more suitable grey for touching it up with given the warmer brown tones of that black?

It's funny you should ask 😄. I actually had recorded a voice over for exactly that question, but then nixed because I thought then black segment was taking too long. So to answer it, use Administratum Grey. It's a neutral light grey and should work well with Black Legion to keep it a warmer black.

Thanks! It's just Gor Grunta Brown Contrast over Silver, and results in more of a deep copper. I highlighted sparingly with Retributor Gold (mixed with a spec of the same contrast paint) to make a lighter copper.

Nice paintjob! I will try to rereate that! Could you give me a tip on how to use the yellow contrast paint? Because its my first time using it, and the testrun was rather brownish and not as smooth of a yellow that you got on the even surfaces.

Thanks! For Nazdreg Yellow, you get that brown when an area is over saturated. This can be due to how much you have on your brush as well as how often you pick up your brush with each stroke. When using contrast paints, it's best to mop with your brush rather than making repeated strokes, because each time you lift your brush, it can leave a saturated "dot". So that being said, use Contrast Medium to help push the over saturated areas into recessed areas as you apply the paint. Also, don't load your brush too much, a little goes a long way. If you find Nazdreg Yellow is too troublesome, Imperial Fist Yellow is a very similar tone and is much easier to use for smooth surfaces (it just doesn't provide much definition on textured surfaces). So you could use Nazdreg Yellow for the the textured surfaces like the cloth jumpsuits and Imperial Fist Yellow for the large plate armor.

Yes, that will work it just won't have a blue black look. You can try Grey Knights Steel, which is a blue steel color, if you want to keep it blue black.

As I understand it, take Bad Moon Yellow instead of Nazdreg, but maybe you have suggestions for the whole model?

Thank you! I'm hoping to make "simple, but quality" my specialty 🙂. I think for the bikes, I'd do a major of the vehicle armor black but with some of the plating accented with the yellow. And you're correct regarding the yellows. I'd go with Imperial Fist Yellow though, it's closer to Nazdreg in being a warmer golden yellow (Bad Moon is a bright lemon yellow). Then to make the drivers stand out from the bikes, maybe make their coats a mahogany brown like with Cygor Brown.

Thank you! And if you do it over grey seer, the black will be fine, but your yellow is going to come out like a muted brown mustard color. I'd use Wraithbone instead. Your black will look kinda green black at first, but since you're stippling/drybrushing in blue grey and then applying a second thin layer of black, it should still revert to a cold black.

Ooooh awesome (and thank you)! Welcome back! As someone who started in 2004, I can tell you it is SOOOOOO much easier to learn new painting techniques now 😄. I highly recommend the Citadel Colour app. It's free and is a great crash course for hobbying (tons of concise videos). Anyway, you are correct, the yellow I used for both of these is Nazdreg Yellow. In hindsight, I probably should have just used Imperial Fist Yellow over the flat smooth armor, rather than carefully smoothing out Nazdreg Yellow.

Black Legion is the only other black Contrast Paint you could switch out with. It's a warmer browner black though, so I'd recommend replacing the Fenrisian Grey with Dawnstone or any neutral grey. Yes, the Contrast Medium is highly recommended. It basically allows for a smoother application as it allows you to push the paint around more instead of it oversaturating a particular area. You can also use Lahmian Medium, but it gives the Contrast Paint slightly more viscosity, so it's thinner and acts slightly more like a shade paint.

It could be a bad bottle. What base color are you applying it over? If it's ivory or grey it's going to look more brown. If you're applying it over white and it's still brown, make sure you're applying it in thin layers. The brown is usually caused by oversaturation of pigment.

In all honesty, I'm not 100% certain. I'm always super uncertain when it comes to skintones so I kinda just play around until I like how it looks. I think it was a mix of Magos Purple Contrast mixed with a pinch of Wyldwood Contrast and then highlighted with Rakarth Flesh/Flayed One Flesh. I know I used Targor Rageshade as a recess shade as well.
