So you want to know the Pros & Cons of Living in Minnesota? We’ve got a lot of awesome things to be proud of and we also have some things that are not so good.
Let’s start with one of the biggest Cons of living in Minnesota…the Winters…the temperatures get so cold at times that it makes you want to cry.
The next Con of living in Minnesota is the Summer Road Construction…since the weather is pretty cold for a good portion of the year our fellow Road Construction heroes only have a brief period of time to fix the damage that was caused by the winter.
Con number three would have to be the Mosquitos and a close second, the black flies. Now the mosquitos are most likely going to be number one on most people’s lists, but I find they can be managed much easier in the Twin Cities Metro. Some of the suburbs treat the high-prone areas where they hatch so the mosquito numbers are much less compared to areas that they don’t treat like areas outside of the metro.
Con number 4 is the fact that we get let down a lot from our Minnesota Sports teams… whether you’ve been a fan of the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Wild, and a few others…there’s a good chance that you’ve been let down.
Con number 5 is that our terrain is mostly flat and if you like to downhill ski you won’t be too impressed with our ski hills in Minnesota. We’ve got a few nice options to practice on, but if you’re used to skiing in the mountains, you’re going to be let down.
Okay, enough of the Cons…let’s move on to the Pros and what makes Minnesota an awesome place to live!
Number 1 is the people…Overall, you find very friendly people in Minnesota. I’m sure you’ve heard of Minnesota nice…and it’s pretty true. Of course, there are always some bad eggs, but you’ll mostly find that people are polite, willing to help strangers, smile as you walk by, pleasant in their conversations, and overall friendly. If your neighbor knows you’re on vacation or your snowblower is down they won’t hesitate to blow your driveway for you.
Pro number two is the abundance of outdoor activities. As you may know, we are considered the land of 10,000 Lakes, but we actually have more than that number. So as you would imagine we have plenty of water activities for you to enjoy. Boating, canoeing, water skiing, fishing, swimming, skating, snowmobiling, and ice fishing to name a few. We also have some pretty awesome camping options as well as mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and cross-country skiing. There is also something about that fresh Minnesota air.
Pro number three is that we have a strong job market in Minnesota. We have a low unemployment rate and many Fortune 500 Companies that call Minnesota home. For example, we have, Target, United Health Group, 3M, Best Buy, General Mills, and Land O’ Lakes to name a few. The median income is also higher than the majority of our other states. So if you want to work you’ll be able to find a job!
Pro number four is our Quality Health Care System. Minnesota is home to the world-renown Mayo Clinic along with many other quality options. People fly in from all over the world to be treated by these quality institutions, so you’re in good hands here.
Pro number 5 is the overall Quality of Life here. We’ve got a great educational system with over 200 colleges and universities and wonderful options for grade school, middle schools, and high schools. Minnesota is frequently ranked as one of the most literate states in the US. We’ve also got a fairly laid-back feel when it comes to our day-to-day living. When it comes to roads we have a well-designed highway network especially compared to other major cities…and if we get a huge snowstorm, we’ve got a large deployment of snowplows that will treat the roads and clear snow so you can be on your way safely. Just remember to slow down, have good tires, and give some space between vehicles on those snowy or icy days.
Pro number 6 is the music scene is one of the best in the country. Minnesota is home to Bob Dylan, Prince, The Replacements, and one of my favorites Trampled By Turtles. We also have a legendary music venue First Avenue where some of the best musicians have played their hearts out.
Okay, now for one of my favorite pros of Minnesota. It kind of has to do with the outdoor activities that I mentioned before…It’s the Boundary Waters Area of northern Minnesota and the Superior Hiking trail system north of Duluth.

I'm 68 and I left the Twin Cities last October for Palm Springs, CA. I was born and raised and lived in the Twin Cities area almost all of my life. What finally got me to leave was the winters and aging. I was tired of fighting the snow and ice on the roads and the sidewalks and I don't like living my life based on the snow and weather reports. I'm able to stay active, even in the Palm Springs heat. One thing I miss is, is Minnesotan's talk to everyone, whether you're waiting for a elevator or waiting in line for anything, we talk to strangers and out here in Cali, not so much. I will always bleed purple, even though the Vikings suck me in every year, just to disappoint at the end of the season.

I live in New Jersey, and if I had the means, I would move to Minnesota. I love the distinct change of seasons. I have seen some recent KZbin videos of the snow they had out there last winter, some with heavy thunderstorms, etc. Here in NJ, yes, they do have a descent change of seasons here, too, but all too often, what start out as descent snowstorms, change to rain. Snow cover out here is almost never sustained. They say that some of the cons if living in Minnesota are the very cold and snowy winters, which are pros to me. Whatever snow falls in New Jersey varies from winter to winter. There may be some descent snowstorms in some seasons, but last winter, outside of a few flurries, there was no snow here whatsoever. The winter before that there was only one 8 or 9 inch snowfall, that was it. The only con about snow to me is having to drive in it, otherwise I love snow. I also live thunderstorms, which while they do have them in New Jersey, all too often they are hit and miss, and too short lived.

I grew up in northern Minnesota on Lake Winnibigoshish and the mosquitoes are nasty. 🦟 We have two seasons in northern Minnesota, winter, and bug season, versus in the Twin Cities, we have winter and road construction. The horse and deer flies will chase you and when I was a kid on my bicycle and looking behind, I would see a swarm of flies following me. 🪰 Then if that is not enough wood ticks are everywhere. Also, immature mayfly nymphs which live on the lake bed will emerge from the lake and cover everything. They don't have a mouth at this stage and will die within a day or two. Some places in the state use snowplows to clear their roads of piles of mayflies.

I lived in Minnesota from 1974 to 1984. I refer to it as the southern most Canadian province in North America. People would derisively refer to the state as the Peoples Republic of Minnesota, because they griped about taxes. What I remember about that is that the quality of education was high. I lived in a smaller city in the Red River Valley part of the state. You got the same good education in small town Minnesota as you would in the cities. Vo-tech education was ubiquitous. The vulnerable got taken care of, in terms of the elderly and the mentally/developmentally disabled. Low tax states like Texas can shoot their mouths off about how better their economy is and how lower their taxes are. And if you’re white living in a good area, you have no reason to gripe. But if you’re not, you’re more often than not on your own. Minnesotans believe in being pragmatic and taking care of each other. And they took their higher taxes and put that funding into improving their education system. Because businesses also want smart people working for them.

I have lived in both Houston and Minnesota. There is no comparison. The weather in Minnesota is way better for someone like me, who likes to get his exercise outdorrs. The heat in Houston is unbearable. I am a walker and in Texas dogs and people carrying guns just freaked me out. None of this in Minnesota. When I think of Texas, I think of mass shootings. In minnesota, breaking a window is the crime you get.
@BadgerCheese94
@BadgerCheese94 Жыл бұрын
@@mandandanmandamayor3511 Theres shootings in Minnesota too. Maybe in rural Minnesota breaking a window is the worst that happens but in the Twin Cities there has been an uptick in violent crime. Its not so bad that I would move out, but it does make you consider where you hang out at certain times of days or what neighbourhoods you wanna live in. However mass shootings are thankfully rare in MN and we dont have any prolific ones like Uvalde, Sandy Hook, Columbine or Parkland. Hopefully it stays that way. I guess you can credit it to the Canadian influence. Our crime is more ordinary.
