I'm assuming it's because the game's 20th anniversary just passed. I actually just decided to replay it a couple days ago because I was finished with Persona 5 Strikers. I don't even have nostalgia for Dark Cloud - I just think it's really cosy.

Hey there@@MrSTVR thanks for joining the Compendium, I hope you enjoy what I put out! Oh for sure, it's crazy how it's been 20 years, time moves too fast! The atmosphere in the first Dark Cloud is second to none, I love the cozy vibes. The game's color pallet of warm earth tones reminds me on an autumn afternoon! Dang, now I want to give the game another playthrough haha! My friends and I are currently working on a Dark Cloud Rom Hack which will add additional content so that should be fun!

Killing everything isn't actually enough. You still have to grind the same amount because fishing is basically an alternate path to running the same dungeon floors over and over, with less risk of accidentally breaking your weapons. Anyway, greetings from the future.

@Jerry Gallo I find this as the prime reason to invest in endurance upgrades for a weapon early in so that you can save up on the free repair powders that the mayor buries you in until you build the shop. The bone rapier is a good early weapon, but it really needs the extra endurance boost. Once you get those, it'll serve you well. And it should be without a doubt that the auto-repair powder is for those that don't want to forget and accidentally waste progress. A bit of a fail-safe item for those metal enemies that eat up WHP more than others. There's also the broken dagger glitch, but the small grinding sessions in the back levels for valuable gems was fun in its own way IMO. Regardless, it's still there for anyone who wants absolutely no part of any grinding. Nothing is more broken than a broken dagger.

Something I remember: Tale of Another World / Broken Promise was the first thing I learned on the piano I have the game to thank for my childhood memories, but more so for introducing me to a hobby I've become incredibly fond of Edit: Some other things I remember 1) Ruby is *thick* 2) The poison sucking theme is... suspicious 3) You can glitch yourself some great upgrade material in the first shop. It's an automatic easy mode, but you can miss it 4) That feather and repair powder will probably be 75% of your inventory 5) God, I hate fishing 6) The fortune teller has awakened some repressed memories 😀 7) The main theme has a bossa nova version, it is great, I like it enough to have it in my main playlist (along with some tracks from a great game, Golden Sun)

This is one of my all time favorites. A very strange thing happened one time. I was playing through the final dungeon yet again and it suddenly hit me: I hadn't seen a back room dungeon item for it in AGES. So curiosity got me and I checked online. Turns out the English version of the games doesn't have it! But the data *must* be there, and was maybe somehow used by accident, because I knew what the item was and what it using it looked like long before I ever looked it up. Weird.

Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle are two of the 4 games I have clocked in insane amount of hours into. Dark Cloud I have probably 8 different save files that have their timers maxed out, and had been maxed out long before the halfway point of the game. Dark Chronicle has 5 save files on one memory card and a few on another beacause I get to the end and then just start a new save. I love these games so much. The only games I MIGHT have clocked more time into are World of Warcraft back in my teens, and the first Digimon World game on the PS1, both of which I'm not sure of the actual time I had clocked into them but I know it was about 10 years ago I hit 32 years in digimon which is roughly 384 hours but that was 10 years ago and I've played that file and new files since then so it's probably much MUCH higher than that. Though this is the first time I've made the connection to Dark Cloud, and Monster Hunter. God I live for the grind!

I got this game for my birthday when it originally released in 2000 when i was 8. I loved every second of it and beat it twice over (easily on the second run after learning the broken dagger glitch and breaking the game) its for sure my top 5 underrated/unknown ps2 games with others like Kinetica the racing game and genji dawn of the samurai

Since kbash likes to play odd ball roleplaying games, i wonder if he'll ever deliver upon us a last remnant review.

That'd be _really_ interesting since I'm maybe 2/3rds through it. Anybody playing _The Last Remnant_ should lookup the TLRPlanner 0.6.7 (hella easier game management overall), Static BR Scaling Mod (less stress and more controllable difficulty), and TLR - Unions & Unique Leaders v0.73 spreadsheet (easier party management).

@@edgarferrer5025 I'm still on break after getting a bit past 2nd disc and updating the spreadsheet. Could definitely jump back in, but busy with everything else now. :| Great game. Would definitely recommend.

Listen, Kbash, chief, you're gonna blow up one day. I swears it. There's no gaming youtuber more prosaic, more rhythmic in their writing than ye. Hang in there, champ. One day this cruel ol harpie of an algorithm'll do ye the justice ye deserve.

It wasn't covered, so to those who haven't played it, upgrading weapons requires gems that improve weapons stats, like attack, or efficiency versus certain enemy types (like Rock, Fish or Dragon). The seemingly intended way to get these upgrades is by defeating enemies with consumables (a pebble or a bomb, as I recall). There is a Poison consumable, but doesn't cause enemies to drop their Slayer Gem. My friend told me about a glitch/cheat you can do in the shop that gives you a broken dagger as a gem that maxes out the stats of any weapon, making levelling them up way easier. I even did it, and had a 7th Heaven by the end of the first dungeon, but I don't remember how to do it anymore.

A classic that has substantial nostalgia for me. Still mad that the Back Room for Dark Heaven's Castle is inaccessible in the US version. This game also has a really good soundtrack with Demon Shaft and Moon Factory among my favorite tracks. Hope we get to see a review of Dark Cloud 2/Chronicle.

Here in EU, a demo of the game was included in a demo disc that was included with the system, which was my first contact to the game. Maybe USA had the same thing, augmenting sales?
