Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. Today I am transforming a tiny bathroom into a vintage-inspired, dark and moody space. I up-cycle a thrifted vanity and give the walls a lime wash effect, but with regular wall paint!

For the best results when you want to achieve a lime wash-like finish on walls without using lime wash, you'll want to start with a base coat in a lighter shade of the same color used for your top coat, then mix the top coat 1:1 with a clear satin glaze and apply with whatever tool gives you the visual texture you want. I used the glaze method with a sea sponge to finish my hall bath, layering 3 darker yellows (the darkest being almost ochre) over a pale yellow base to achieve an aged parchment look, and it came out stunning.

I was wondering. I’ve never done this just had a vague recollection that your explanation is how it should be done. The desired result is tonal contrast rather than different colors, right?

Well I was thinking that the variation is a bit stark, so I can see how that might work. I was wondering what would happen if you put gold or burnt orange underneath.

Great response, I was going to post the same thing about using glaze - it can also give you a more subtle watercolor type effect if that is the look that you are going for.

I’m an occasional professional painter (of illustration not rooms) and have to echo the comments advocating two paints for a lime wash look using regular wall paint. I would suggest identifying the lime wash color you want, finding the closest color in a wall paint brand, and buying two paints: a paint two shades lighter and two shades darker. Paint the darker shade over the entire wall, allow to dry, and then go in with a rag and dry buff on the lighter color, slowly building up as desired. You can always go back over with the darker shade! This way you don’t need to entirely rely on that difficult arm work AND the eye will naturally compensate for the difference in the colors from afar/see the desired tone with added dimensionality. Anyway… I love this makeover ❤️
@mortalemily
@mortalemily Жыл бұрын
The trick to this I think would be using less of the buff color than you think you will need so it can really blend into the existing color

As someone with similar background I agree. I'd also rather use a matte emulsion than a regular latex paint. Latex paintd attract dust (static) and have a plastic feel. Emulsions come in many varieties and arent static, and much better for the environment and prettier. Mixing your own emulsion also isn't that difficult. So much cheaper than buying Little Green etc. But you can't paint with latex paint over home made emulsion or limewash. Sponge-painted latex paint walls was done to exhaustion in the late 80s. Sortof like glossy apricot paint on textured wallcovering.

Overall I think this is gorgeous, and major props for being bold and going dark! One thing I’d suggest: for the walls I would have done the sponging on top of a base coat of slightly lighter blue… the white showing through looks a bit unfinished to me. And the sink is beautiful if it’s mostly a guest bathroom, but man I would hate trying to fit my hands in that tiny thing on a daily basis without splashing water everywhere 😂

A third coat might have been the solution. And maybe two or three colours might have been more interesting. The large sink spout seems to be completely out of proportion with the small size of the basin. Splish-splash indeed!

I thought the same thing, too, about the size of the sink. Guests probably won’t think about drying the wood top after washing their hands, either. I know it’s sealed, but it just seems like it wasn’t well thought out.

I really like everything but the texture on the walls. Just a personal preference. I grew up in the 80s and 90s where all forms of this was over done. But I do love the color. The vanity is my favorite ❤ it's nice to see moody dark styles because I'm burnt out on the light and bright tones where everything kinda looks the same.
@StephanieGraska
@StephanieGraska Жыл бұрын
I was coming here to say the same. Everything looks great, and I don't mind the kookey mirror so much, but the paint... I saw so many 80s homes with sponge/rag ain't and it never ever looked good..I could say that this technique might have worked if they used it on an already tonal wall (shade up for brighter and down for moodier, your perference) but on top of the white it looks shabby cheap. Otherwise, I would love this in my house, P.s. I bet you 100% they repaint within the year.... sns

My words exactly. Have to say I did cringe a bit with the painting. Although the color was beautiful, (loved it on the celling), the walls just didn't work. Loved the vanity and countertop! Was confused though, by the artwork for a family, friendly guest bathroom. 🤔

When I saw the sponges come out, I was crying, No!!! 🙀 I sometimes wonder what the new owners of my house where I did a textured sponge effect in the early 90s. When they wanted to paint a new colour they must have had to sand all the walls as really it was a bumpy mess. To be honest, I would prefer the solid colour . It’s such a gorgeous blue with incredible depth.

Love this! I ain't a pro, but someone taught me a painting skill which is quite easy to do. I once painted a tiny white bathroom a moody blue and did the trick and it looked like a distressed wall from Europe!

Another technique is to paint the walls in color of choice then dab paint with a scrunched up rag in a color slightly lighter or darker. Random dabs then rescrunching the rag to get a different pattern as you randomly dab the paint. Looks alot more organic.

I agree. Probably my least favourite renovation. The elements work but not quite the way it's been done. The white streaks are too prominent for my liking, and does not look like lime wash to me. i would prefer a more muted cloud look rather than the streaks. While the cupboard was lovey, I didn't like the glass as you could see the toilet paper and plumbing, which to me is an eye sore. It was kitsch, and will date pretty quickly. I would have preferred something a little more organic and classy.

I actually do really like it, and applaud trying something different. That sink! 😍 Though if I were to try the walls I think a normal coat of paint in a similar but lighter / darker colour under one layer of the sponge-effect would be a better result. That way its not reading as the white walls underneath, and one layer of the sponge effect was more effective as a pattern imo

I knew exactly when I became old. It was when I started to look at some cool home decor and immediately think of cleaning/dusting/polishing issues. Those kind of sinks are a pain to clean. It looked great. But a new mom doesn’t need extra anything when it comes to chores. Also, she may need to have extra lighting when cleaning that powder room. Love the idea, not the function day after day after day.

I really enjoy your videos transporting myself back to the 90s when I was a few years older than you are now. The HGTV & TLC contents were full of DIY design projects with probably faux paint finishes being the most popular. I threw myself into that wholeheartedly. Christopher Lowell was extremely into this vibe. I copied one of his looks. It was faux leather. I painted a dining room with a deep red flat paint. In the same color applied high gloss, lifting off with massive wads of plastic wrap. Man that was ambitious.

This was basically my reaction to the entire makeover. The walls look completely amateurish. The cabinet looks like it needs to be refinished. The sink -- how old will her toddler be before he can reach over the sides to wash his hands? The towel holder -- why not just order it in brushed brass instead of another amateurish attempt? Once the finish is altered, will it withstand the test of time? The toilet roll holder does not blend with the style of the room, and the metal bits are silver. The shelves look cheap. This is a hard no for me, except for the cabinet knobs. Compare those to the toilet roll holder and decide if they belong in the same makeover.

Love the sink and vanity however would have etched the glass so you don't see silver plumbing. Great paint colour, really bad application. Supposed to remove frog tape before paint dries, saves doing touch ups. I don't understand a black shelf, that would have been great in gold/brass.

I love the dark wood dark wall color, brass and gold elements, but not into the modern ones, some of it feels misplaced. Also don’t love how the texture pulled together but it had potential I think the sea sponge maybe with one coat of blue would’ve been interesting to see.

I think the problem is not with the paint technique but with the execution, especially on the wall right of the sink, more dark and messy than dark and moody. Everything else is very lovely.

Hmmm.. I’d say this is the first time that I’m not a fan of the finished room.. I think it’s due to the sponged paint effect… but the home owners love it so that’s all that matters ❤

Beautifully redesigned 🎉! The sink is a dream, but it seems very small... and I get the impression that the owners don't like the walls all that much.

One thing to keep in mind with textured paint finishes is that you'll have to sand when you repaint. Otherwise the texture shows through during your next makeover.

@@icecreammaker5007 oooh, stripes would be super distinctive. We had a sponge paint finish, and the wall looked like it was covered in drips or finger prints. We had already done one coat of the new colour and had to sand the whole wall pretty aggressively.

it’s funny but i actually think this is what they should have done here. paint one more coat over it so the textures still shows but doesn’t look as messy-spongey as it does right now. love this bathroom though.

I did a similar thing in a really dark purple in my dining room once. Cheesecloth was what I used and it was more subtle, and easier to get in the corners. It was very messy work, but I loved it. I love that vanity.

I really like the aesthetic you were going for, but the execution could've been better. I think a third coat on the walls would've made the technique look more intentional and the sink is just way too small.

Oh i really dont like the paint 😕 and i do like dark paint and limewash but idk about this hack. Maybe it could have done with a third coat, or a slightly lighter navy base with the swirls on top, like i get the vision but a lil more experimentation could have helped. Also, sidenote, i just wanna mary Graham

Walls look good, but do not look like lime wash. To "fake" lime wash you need two paints, one lighter and one slightly darker. Paint a solid coat of the lighter color, then dry brush (dry with just a hint of paint, dab it on a paper towel to remove excess paint)on top with the darker color. Use a lime wash brush and the same technique as when doing lime wash. Criss cross pattern.

Having sponged many rooms and closets and an attic with walls and floors done like a cloud inside, this is of special interest to me. The doors of every closet were removed before taking possession, no money left to replace8--- so fabulous colors and special techniques ended up selling that house. You did so well by doing samples ahead. So no screaming into pillows or the abbyse (sp.?) needed later. Thank you. Nice choices. Never seen a sink like that Good art,colors done with thought and care . We appreciate your resident angel boy.

Great work! Fun video, cool desogn. But somehow I feel like the functionality is being forgotten a litttle. Glass door into a bathroom storage is not gonna be so pretty when you remove the decorations and actually live there. Also, right after you said you do touch-ups off camera - you proceed to film a fingerprint-smeared mirror for the reveal. 🤣

I think this is one of those makeovers that doesn’t capture how stunning and beautiful it is in person and the high quality of all the finishes and I think that is a really hard paint effect to capture on camera and it does look good, it’s just hard to see 😊 You’ve done really well 👍 The vanity is beautiful and people do not realise no one will see the plumbing in the cabinet once the owner puts what she wants in there 🤦‍♀️

I would go over the paint with a diluted grey color, with water, to cut down on the white variation. Like just roll it on, the regular way. It would make it look smoother. You want the look subtle.
