Scott Snyder is one of my favorite Batman comic writers of all time. Like, he’s up there with Frank Miller and Allen Moore and Jeph Loeb and Grant Morrison. He doesn’t pull any punches and is willing to take Batman, as well as the whole DC Universe in directions you really wouldn’t expect. And given how prolific Snyder’s writing is and how many events and arcs and crises he’s spearheaded since his New 52 Batman run, it gives me the feeling the Snyder became DC’s head writer. One of my favorite that he did during New 52 was the Requiem arc with the death of Damien Wayne and how he portrayed How that affected not just Bruce but Batman as well. One of the most heartbreaking moments for me was he opened one of the issues with Batman and Robin taking out some arms dealers and of course Damien being Damien tries to do everything just to gain the acceptance of Bruce and show that Bruce doesn’t need to treat him like other Robins. However, he wasn’t keeping track of every criminal and almost gets killed. But of course Batman was keeping track of all of them and takes the dude out just as Damien realized someone was behind him, which would have been too late if Batman hadn’t been there. Of course Batman then begins to scold him for his recklessness and they get into an argument and Damien gets pissy(as usual) takes off. Then we see the UI overlay on the panels and we’re shown that Batman is actually watching the recording of the scene I described via his contacts that he wears that connect to the Batcomputer. Then we get a close up of Batman’s eyes and can see what the contact is displaying and can see that the recording is still playing, and Batman is crying. Not breaking down or sobbing, but a couple tears running down his face. And kudos to Greg Capullo and his illustrations because you can see the pain, disappointment, utter sadness, regret, and guilt in his eyes. That you can tell he blames himself and sees himself as a total failure as Father, the shame that he feels because he believes that not only did he fail his son Damien but that he fail to live up to and uphold his promise he made to his parents about not letting this again. We’re also constantly shown Bruce always being by Damien’s Bedroll and treasuring everything of Damien’s. Bruce finds a letter of Damien’s meant for Bruce. Contents of the letter are Damien telling Bruce that he refuses to be put on the side-lines when it came to going after Leviathan, the assassin group Talia Al’ghul is the head of. That regardless of what Bruce wants, Damien is going after Leviathan no matter what. Bruce becomes enraged, most likely coming to the realization that by trying to keep Damien away from Leviathan and Damien’s mother, Talia that he is directly responsible for Damien being killed by Laviathan. That if he had allowed Damien to help him fight against Leviathan Damien would have at least been with him and Bruce would have been in a position to keep Damien from being killed because he would have at least been watching Damien’s back. Bruce then crumples to the floor clutching Damien’s Robin suit and completely breaks down. New 52 had its issues(no pun intended) up at least as far as Batman goes, it was amazing, and if anyone has read the Batman New 52 comics I strongly recommend them. Scott Snyder’s writing is so good and Greg Capullo’s art is really able to capture the atmosphere of the scene’s Snyder sets, as well as the emotions internal conflict that Bruce and the rest of the cast of Batman characters experiences throughout the whole run.

I did a round trip drive from AZ to LA and still not done. I'm listening to it now post entire trip and still halfway through 😂. While driving, I initially believed it was an 11-minute drive, but once I realized during my drive that 40 minutes had passed and I was still listening, I checked the time and was floored to see it stated 11 hours! Lol, 11! Even those sleep meditation videos don’t last this long. However, I have read Dark Nights Metal and always enjoyed it, but I was kind of lost and not fully able to understand it. (Funny, meta for me in regards to experiences in my life). What I appreciate about it is that now I grasp it much better, and if you go back to the actual Dark Metal series graphic novel, you get so much more enjoyment and insight from it. So, my dude who made this, I give you massive props. Personal disclosure - I am on medical leave due to frightening illnesses along with more insane work experiences. This guy helped me through it all, and I wasn’t even looking for comfort, but this video did! It truly helped me to “shut down” my constantly racing mind that is always, and I mean always, thinking of “next moves,” “contingency plans,” and forcing myself to either fix whatever situation I am in or find solid tangible ways out safely. (Weird, kind of like Batman). However, with medical conditions that are not really in your control, for the first time, I can’t “think” my way out of this. So, truly, this guy and his channel (similar to a form of meditation) managed to shut off this brain I have which I never give a break. So, my dude, I recently stumbled upon your channel, and I literally would NEVER watch and listen to an 11-hour video - I never realized how much it personally helps me. I don't care if this comes across as corny. It’s true. I have conditions that read out of a nightmare that I have limited control over, with serious Machiavellian work politics happening at the same time that, for the first time, leave me feeling helpless. This video took me out of this personal insanity with not a single thought about my problems, which, in a way, allows my mind to “relax” and “shut off.” But it’s only later I realized how meta it is - as crazy and fantastical this whole entire arc is - it’s also in some ways inspiring, thus allowing me to continue these personal battles with fortitude and not allowing myself to fall so deep into helplessness. So, my dude, all I have to say to you is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 🙏. May the goodness beyond the Source Wall - that “hand” reach out to you and bless you and your life. Essentially, it’s the hand of God. P.S - I am not a religious person. I am very logical and see life as a game that requires strategic planning and moves to survive. But with these diagnoses and my NDE, I see it differently - you can see it both ways. As a game and a spiritual collective experience. Anyway, I hope you all understand what I’m trying to express.

My thoughts on the story: Spoilers obviously. I LOVED the start of this story arc with the Dark Nights Metal event, and even the start of the Justice League run that came afterwards (though Dark Nights were the highlight), but everything after Perpetua appeared felt empty to me somehow. I finished following the story after they time traveled. I tried to keep reading but couldn't force myself to keep reading it. I also really enjoyed everything lex Luthur until he became a direct servant for Perpetua. When I saw that Rob's covering the ending of the story I started to watch the videos to see how the ending is, & I gotta say it was a let down for me, even with low expectations. I see why some people would like the story & there are elements I heavily enjoyed, but just not enough for me to outweigh the bad. Also, the power creep is off the scale, and what happened to the presence? Or Lucifer? Too much effect on the overall omniverse without direct explanations. I hope they mesh it all well.
@morlath47673 жыл бұрын
Snyder's power creep across this epic is insane. And I honestly got sick and tired of how many times the bad guys were able to Sherlock their way around the heroes plans or just straight-up pull a victory from nowhere. Snyder basically took the trope of Heroes doing it at the eleventh hour, turned it on its head and kept repeating the action right until the very end. Despite the good scenes and fun smaller segments, his entire run feels like it could be summed up as - "And this is the greatest threat they've ever faced. If they win, it's only because doing so has released an even greater threat than they've ever faced. If they lose, it's because the big evil evolved into an even bigger evil at the last minute." Essentially everything that turns me off of Anime/Manga.
@yaelfeldman69653 жыл бұрын
@@morlath4767 I agree. Didn't realized why I didn't like it up until now but it's obvious that's what happened. Though about the anime/manga comment, just wanted to say that this is absolutely not a "rule" of anime and that there are a lot of stories where this doesn't happen. It does happen in the more well-known ones, but not in all of them. If you want an example let me know, though I want push it on to you.
@morlath47673 жыл бұрын
@@yaelfeldman6965 I realised my manga/anime comment not long after posting. I see this massive arc has having two additional problems: 1 - Snyder's liking of Grant Morrison's writing. It makes everything feel like a giant love letter to Final Crisis 2 - His disliking of writing "standard stories." I think it's Sal/ComicPop who has said he's quoted as saying while he /could/ write a normal/standard comic story, he doesn't want to. This means his brain kept going "But what if...THIS!" The story essentially ran away from him, and he couldn't/didn't want to pull it back in.

I think Batman’s “half measure” approach, or his philosophical Rule, falls in line perfectly with a scene from the movie Kingdom of Heaven. “A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power.” Batman is keeper of his own soul. He literally has his rule to prevent himself from living long enough to see himself become the villain. And you really can’t blame him for that.

''b-but if he killed irredeemable people like Joker he could save so many lives'' my man just does not care and does things his way lamo what a perspective
@kingol48012 жыл бұрын
@@noriman4335 Counterargument to that statement - Bruce’s mental stability hinges on that one fine line. He is super mentally unstable otherwise. Imagine how many lives he would take afterwards? Unlike normal villains, it would never stop. Dark Knights Metal is a perfect example. Slightly more of anything (Batman’s love for Alfred, Batman’s grief, his unending list of regrets, Batman’s obsession with stopping all crime, Batman’s unyielding will to go to whatever means necessary etc) and Batman eventually becomes a horrid monster.
@vincentramos82922 жыл бұрын
@@kingol4801 that's how it is now of days his character started getting written that way because of censorship back in the day when batman used to kill people but had to be less violent or it would've been canceled
