What a great actress she was. This is the only time I have ever heard her talk about her Dark Shadows days.

Clarice was asked to do a character who fostered zero sympathy - Abigail Collins - and she did it with an uncanny discipline, despite what must have been a strong temptation to soften the character and solicit mercy. But when Abigail meets her doom, the audience cheers, and an actress sealed her right to be counted among the greats. May she rest in peace.

+dvlaries I thought Abigail got off too easy. I thought Barnabas should have strangled her, chased her around the room, make her see some scary stuff, like he did Trask, or something. She had it coming, the way she treated Vickie.

Even as a child, before I knew any more about life than any other child, when I watched "Dark Shadows" (which I loved), I was MUCH more afraid of Abigail Collins and Reverend Trask than I ever was of Barnabas and Angelique. I knew that there was no such thing in real life as a witch or a vampire, but that there certainly WERE people as hateful and malicious as those two. (And Clarice Blackburn and Jerry Lacy couldn't have BEEN more convincing in their respective parts). A monster whom you might actually meet is always more frightening than one you can't.

@@elizabethacito6755 I've binge watched on Amazon Prime and I'm going back and re-watching the earlier episodes which I enjoyed the most. It got a little weird with the Leviathans and the disembodied head. I really didn't care for those. I liked the acting between the core characters and tthought Clarice Blackburn was superb. I just watched her as Abigail Collins yesterday, her dying scene when she discovered Barnabas rising out of his coffin. 🧛♂️🦇😱 You could sense her rising fear. My heart was racing watching her reaction to Barnabas. She was an amazing actress.

Next to Grayson Hall and Joan Bennett, Clarice Blackburn was my favorite actresss on the show. She was quite a scene-stealer. She reminded me of Margaret Hamilton when she played Gothic housekeepers, particularly in Thirteen Ghosts. As the show got camper, I began to Envision comic Andrea Martin doing a Carol Burnett like spoof of her. Characters like Mrs. Johnson and Abigail Collins are definitely ripe for parody, how she looked in this interview is how I remember her as hospital administrator Edith Spurrier on Guiding Light.

They added too may different characters when they veered off into the supernatural storylines that even the original characters were often pushed into the background and barely seen for long periods of time.

@@IVant2BAloneA lot of people would disagree with me, but I actually prefer the early b&w “gothic suspense” episodes to the color, full-throttle horror episodes that came later. I’m aware that until Barnabas Collins came along, the ratings were low, and the series was slated for cancellation, but I wonder if a more subtle approach (fog off the ocean rather than nearly constant thunder and lightning) couldn’t have somehow been worked out.
