@Opticfreakinbarrel9 жыл бұрын
psykonesis Well, she is definitely the most human character in any Dark Souls game (in my opinion, anyway). She's not some great warrior (although she is a proud knight of Mirrah, so she's not weak by any means), she's not a powerful sorceress, she's not an inhuman creature (yet), and most of all, she has no important journey or great destiny. She's simply a woman trying to hold onto her very humanity. Often, we see characters after they've turned Hollow, like Gwyn and Laurentius, but we never see them actually being turned Hollow. With Lucatiel, we see how painful it is to be afflicted by the curse. We see her lose everything that's important to her; her memories, her personality, everything that makes her who she is. We see her in such a desperate state that she'd be willing to do anything, even murder the player (seemingly her only friend on her lonely journey), if it meant that she could hang onto her humanity. At the end, we see her begging you simply to remember who she is; she knows she'll forget. She hangs desperately onto life, never wanting to let go, and that's what I think makes her such a great character. She reacts like most people would to being afflicted with such a fate, people who are faced with death, or something like it. Through her, we see how horrible the curse is and what it can do to a person, and possibly most touching of all, we see a desperate woman clinging onto the very essence of her being, all she has left. It's a depressing story, and it's made even worse by us being unable to help her. All we can do is watch as she fades away, the only comfort we can give her being that of memory, as she knows that even if she forgets herself, we'll remember her. TL;DR: Yeah, Lucatiel is amazing! Best NPC in Dark Souls 2 hands down!
@thePontiffsSnickerdoodles4 жыл бұрын
To find the Lucatiel mask in Dark Souls 3 literal ages beyond the land of Drangleic suggests that the Bearer of the Curse chose the path of neither light nor dark, bearing a crown that warded off the effects of Hollowing, and became one of the numerous legends mentioned in the Fahram set. More importantly, the Bearer of the Curse kept their promise to their dear friend, and remembered her name, perhaps even going as far as to entrust the safety of the last connection to her, her mask, with a wonderful, snuggly crow.
@strawberrycollector8 жыл бұрын
My heart broke when she said "maybe we're all cursed, from the moment we're born." Immediately I thought of Crestfallen Saulden. People criticize Dark Souls 2 for a lot of reasons, but I really appreciate what it was. Yeah, most of the bosses were "slight variations on 'a dude in armor'," but it really gave the narrative a stronger focus. It really felt like I was fighting through the decayed remnants of Vendrick's kingdom and army. Yeah, the map was linear and didn't have the interconnectedness of Lordran, but it delivered a better sense of progression. Except for the Iron Keep being a sea of magma on top of a windmill basically. But like, the direct path from Majula to the Lost Sinner was amazing. I was awestruck as I fought through the collapsing ruins of an ancient kingdom and found a hidden passage which allowed me to enter the place from which those who dug the tunnel were fleeing, before hijacking a prisoner transport ship and sailing to a decaying prison. The Gutter sucked to play, but I think the thing that makes it enjoyable is that it really captured the vibe that areas like it and Blighttown try to capture. Walking along the rickety wooden paths really made me feel like I was walking through a city build by the undead. Everything seemed to focus on this central theme of resilience. Even if you're thrown to the bottom of a cesspit, the human spirit tries to survive. Every area had a strong central theme, even if the connections between them were somewhat dubious (Earthen Peak to Iron Keep, Drangleic Castle to Shrine of Amana, Aldia's Keep to Dragon Aerie). Dark Souls 1 is better, but that does not make Dark Souls 2 a bad game.

She's not. Just because you can transpose her sword from the Curse Rotted Greatwood doesn't mean she's ever been a Moundmaker. I like how her sword's description can be interpreted in two ways. Sad spoilers? I guess? DS3 after defeating the demon tree. Can't one receive her sword by trading the boss soul? Before/during/after the time warp of DS2, she found the tree, fed a part of her soul to the tree. Maybe that's why her dialogue seems so wonky.

As someone who is currently losing someone close to Alzheimer's, I can claim the horrid accuracy of the curse depicted in these games. The fact that it is painfully slow, whittling away at a person's memories and characteristics is infinitely worse than simply losing someone to death. I must live with the fact that my grandmother will die with no memory of me, as all traces of me are already gone from her mind. She is no longer who she was before, treating me with skepticism and hostility as if I were a stranger. The seventy years of experience that shaped who she was have been erased, leaving a memoryless shell. These games move me on a level no other game has, and though I have come to peace with my own mortality and have made my own purpose, I still fear that wretched disease and hope that one day we will vanquish it from the earth

@JayDragon79 жыл бұрын
supremehunter11 No, Solaire was not depressed. He fell into a depression, but even then he could withstand it. Lucatiel I consider a far better example of depression because she accepts the fate. She accepts that she is a lost cause. That there is nothing for her life. She cannot find a reason, a motive to keep living. So she seeks desperately for someone, anyone who could provide her solace. A means of feeling happy. An anchor since she herself cannot carry the burden of living. Which was her brother, who she sought out since everything else in her life was gone. Solaire forsakes his life for a goal that he dreamed of, that is ambition, not depression. Lucatiel was basically walking death, someone without cause.

Lucatiel is the most relatable and grounded character for me in all of Dark Souls. Honestly, the existential fear of losing the only thing you truly know; yourself, is the the most frightful thing I can possibly think of. The death of self, the ego, the only thing we desperately hold on to in hopes that we can live it to the fullest. Most of us want to keep existing no matter what and Lucatiel is a great embodiment of the bittersweet experience we call mortality.

While DS1 was definitely a better game overall, the emphasis in DS2 of the undead not knowing how they got to Drangleic, and watching Lucatiel slowly hollow really hit it home and made undeath seem much more real and hopeless. Watching NPCs hollow in DS1 was sad but there was less character development about it. Lordran came across as already lost, it was interesting to watch Drangleic in it's death throes.

What really angered me about this game is that I could not save her! I mean I will admit I cried for Lucatiel, I could relate to her loss of those she held dear, that search for purpose and the conviction that she wanted to find her brother. Her family was what driven her to go to hell and back to find her only purpose of going on. I could relate on many emotional levels of this character, I guess that is good writing in the games part. That is dark souls for you, this sense that you cannot save anyone but yourself, all you can do is listen to their stories, all the characters you meet are like dying flames in an ever expanding darkness; all you can do is slowly ease their pain and give them their dying wish. Lucatiel, I wanted to fight alongside her till the end of the game it broke my heart that she was losing herself. When I met her for the last time I wore her armor in honor of her. If no other time, I believe she wanted at least one person to like her and remember her and what she stood for before she fully hollowed. From my world view, I believe a person would only want that from another if they trusted and cared for them in the capacity of a friend.

I love so much this character and her storyline. You know... this is exactly what the characters in various games should be. After all, in fact, in the game, she does nothing but talk to us with every meeting. We see only the consequences, and we hear her sad story with bitterness. For the entire game, she only moves around the locations, removes the mask and says goodbye to us. And that's all! And this is an example of a good presentation of the character's story! We didn't see how much she went through in her life, we only saw the consequences, which get worse with every meeting. And by her fate, Lucatiel fell in love with the hearts of millions of fans of the Dark Souls series. Sorry for my English. In Russia we love her backstory too

Awesome video. Existentialism is one of my personal favorite schools of thought, and I think you nailed this one
@Rahnonymous2 жыл бұрын
Hollowing exists in real life, and that's why I think it's so easy to understand and empathise with Lucatiel's story. The fear that you could be taking care of a grandparent or elder family member, and out of nowhere they forget who you are and start attacking you because they think you broke into their house is real. It's so sad to see someone forget everything and everyone. Even themselves.

*Lucatiel* A mix between Otztrava, Solaire & Siegmeyer. She helps you in multiple key boss battles: Flexible Sentry, Lost Sinner, Smelter Demon, The Rotten, Burn Ivory King. Lucatiel is brave & Badass, real good character Tomboyish and cool companion that only has on human task, find her brother Aslatiel and bring him back, put perish near the end, and you find Aslatiel... Very cool story Vaaty.

Nice video as usual Vaati. Lucatiel's story is both, the most sad, and the most interesting in the game. Well designed character overall.

"please remember my name, for I may not myself" I always liked to think that the red invader isn't Aslatiel... but actual Lucatiel - after forgetting everything for a long time all that she kept remembering was the name of her dear brother, as that was one of the things, that was most important to her - why she came to Dranleic in the first place... time is convoluted in Dranleic - a lot of time pasted and all that remained of Lucatiel... was Aslatiel. ^^

it kind of doesn't make any more or less sad than it is to me, but it is definitely interesting. never thought about that before, i like that theory a lot
@Obnubilated9 жыл бұрын
I really like this theory too. I think it makes good sense; I mean why would her brother be wearing the item 'Lucatiel's Mask' and not 'Mirrah Hat'? the In-game description even reads "Normally hats and masks are separate, but these two have been adjoined." - the key word being "Normally" for why would a man need this disguise? "Normally, people keep a safe distant when they see this mask." This quote leads me to believe that the two were adjoined only to hide her sex. The sex change coffin is a thing in the game, and the only thing it does not change is your character's face; which is why she would still need to wear it to become the person she tried the hardest not to forget, not herself but her lost brother.

It's something to think about, but then again, it states that a undead, once arriving at drangleic, first forgets why they came there in the first place.
@BrianH19889 жыл бұрын
Lucatiel's story is perhaps one of the most tragic of any minor character in the whole of Dark Souls. And one of the few times we get a direct glimpse of how the curse can directly affect a person... You can only fight the curse for so long before it consumes you, and we clearly see that stage taking place throughout the game. As always, amazing and insightful. Your videos are the pillar of the KZbin community, VaatiVidya.

I just witnessed something similar to hollowing. Just before my grandmother died years ago... She slowly lost her memory. Thing like how her grandchildren were named, later the names of her own childre ... Until she didn't even remembered her own Name... This hunts me in my Dreams and keeps me up at nights when i am lonely or just full of thoughts. I fear loosing everything that i learned through live... Everything that Just defined me, my way through time. The Name of my Loved ones, names of my children. I can relate to this character so much because i fear like her.

Even years later this story makes me tear up. The actress who plays Lucatiel nails the fear and stubborn pride of the character so well that you can't help but sympathize with her. She's so scared of losing herself. Of losing what's important to her. She's like a dementia patient or someone with a terminal illness. She has so much more story she wants to tell of her life but it's being cut short. It's fantastic writing. But it still makes me so sad.

Lucatiel story reminds me of Solaires a little in how she is there to help others in battle and is yet on the same journey as the player. She's always one step ahead of us and even manages to get to Aldia Keep which means she got the kings ring. Her background is different though than Solaires in that she just doesn't want to lose herself to hollowing unlike Solaires who wants to ignite the new flame. I like her character and this was a great video on her Vat so thanks.

The way she describes the fear of losing her sense of identity is exactly how a lot of people with dementia would describe it. I've seen it with grandparents and I've seen it countless times in my job, working directly with people with dementia, often at the point of diagnosis, when they have the most insight into what will probably happen to them. The gradual loss of focus and memories, and the dreaded belief that they will lose what makes them an individual. Her characterisation really strikes a chord with me because it is all too realistic - especially how these feelings make even the most strong-willed, determined people feel vulnerable. This is probably why she's my favourite NPC in all the DS games. *Disclaimer - it's possible to live relatively well with dementia, if managed correctly; nevertheless, I've met too many people who feel the way Lucatiel describes feeling.

There was always a bitter-sweetness about Lucatiel, and she still is a very memorable character from Dark Souls II, and it makes you appreciate how powerful story-telling can be in video games, even in a game series that was criticized for not having a "direct plot" but definitely rich in lore. Your name is not forgotten, brave warrior!
