Also, notice how Benhart is the only companion (kinda) of the Souls Series that never shows indice of going hollow. To become hollow a cursed undead must find himself without a reason to be alive, that's why they're always in neverending missions. This means Benhart is either actually alive (as in non-undead) or has a really simple mission (per say, just traveling side to side to kill shit).

My theory is that Benhart, like Solaire, is the chosen undead in his own world and that we only see him when our worlds overlap. This is why he has access to the ashen mist heart and, like Solaire, is the only npc you can summon for the final boss fight. Like Solaire, whose sword is said to be unremarkable, Benhart's sword is a weak copy. Like Solaire, he overcomes this failing through willpower and skill. However he differs from Solaire because his main goal is to make a name for himself. If you look at Benhart's Parma, it says that his family crest has been around for generations so he must have come from a family of proud knights (hence the reason he's so fond of his gear). His family has fallen into disgrace or mediocrity, and Benhart seeks to restore his family's name by "perfecting his swordsmanship" against the "powerful beings slumber in this land" eventually unlocking "the sword's true power" which "only a real man can wield it true". With this understanding, it becomes clear why he's so eager to help you take on bosses and even says "I've a great debt to you" after helping you 3 times. But why does he give his precious equipment to you, and what is he doing in the Memory of Orro? As mentioned earlier, he has no interest in linking the flame. Rather than linking the flame, becoming hollow, and having his sacrifice be forgotten in the annals of history and in his own mind, he'd rather become a part of the Memory of Orro and ensure that his glorious achievements are remembered for all eternity. In essence, the Memory of Orro symbolizes his desire and is his Throne of Want. It is for this reason that he gives you the sword that he would not trade "for all the riches in the world" and his family heirloom shield. You have given him far more in return. By defeating the bosses, he realizes that he has become great in his own right even without the power of the sword. His journey is at an end; he has achieved what he always sought: to be immortalized in memory.

When you look at Creighton's armor description you missed the important line, "perhaps it's a finely crafted imitation". This would fit with the idea that Benhart's sword is also an imitation and despite being very strong, he's loveably gullible? Sidenote, I would love it if you went to him with the Moonlight Greatsword and he would get upset about it, realizing his was a fake. Kind of like Siegmeyer when you would return to him after solving some problem for him. His subdued disappointment always made me feel bad.

RamuneFlavor I think Creighton's armour set is an imitation of Mirrah knight's gear, but Benhart's sword is unrelated to that. Or at least, I don't think there's much of a connection, despite them both being imitations. Just my opinion, though.

Benhart is such a genuine man. I love him to pieces. He's so powerful with a fake sword in his hands now. He achieves just as much as we do on our journeys. Imagine how powerful he would be once gifted the true Moonlight Greatsword, after all of his hard work.

If only a true swordsman can draw out the real potential of the sword, how can we trust anyone who says it's fake? It's obvious they couldn't wield it. And if neither you nor Benhart can, how can we expect piddly merchants to do so? So it obviously looks fake to everyone, or at the very least feels weak.

Because it's a meta joke on the sword. The model is almost identical to DS1 moonlight greatsword (save for the color of the blade). DS2 is plagued to meta references to the first game: The shield you get in the sunbro covenant, the old dragonslayer in heide's cathedral, the lord's souls in NG+, creighton locked up just like lautrec, pate being a twist on the usual Patches shenanigans, Fume knight design resembling artorias, the majestic greatsword referencing the fan theory that artorias was left handed...

Benhart is my second-favorite NPC behind Lucatiel. I've always loved the whole noble Scotsman warrior trope and he reminds me a bit of Mel Gibson's portrayal of William Wallace in Braveheart. I also never really thought about the implications of Benhart being in the giant memories but it makes sense, even more so considering you can summon him for the fight with Nashandra.

i think benhart is an undead who completed the quest before you but is stuck in drangleic as a helper and the memory of orro keeps him from aging. his weapon lost it's previous magic effect returned to being raw physical weapon damage because it is too old.

Ben is hands down my favorite character in Dark Souls II. When given summoning signs, I tend to forego everyone else except him. I think he would prefer it that way. Even though the Mirror Knight wiped him, the simple joy of fighting alongside such a man made it worth it.

What is to add is that Bernhardt is German name but maybe more interesting is maybe the Word "Jugo". People of former Jugoslavia were being called like this. I've never had such a great need for his gear that I've killed him before his questline could complete and he'd give it all to me anyway, but I would feel pretty guilty if I did. Then again, going out in glorious battle is the way he would prefer to go, wouldn't it? So as long as you didn't cheese him in some way that left him dead before he could even stand up and get ready, it's a worthy death.

I enjoy going into the game and piece together the lore for myself, but I love hearing possible speculation from videos like yours. However I think you may have made a mistake here. You MAY have already been told this (in which case I'm sorry for repeating the same message that's been going on over and over again), but Benhart, when taken apart, could also mean "son of the deer," Ben meaning "son" (with some relations to kindness or being blessed), and Hart meaning "deer." However, the connection with this name and the name Bernard is an interesting one regardless since this name describes Benhart as well. Other than this mistake I thought this video was great for educating newcomers to the Dark Souls lore. Please make more!

After all, he does move permanently into one of the giant's memories of all places. Does he 'just' have a greater purpose in undeath than we, or is there more to him?

A good point, but isn't it said somewhere that having something to cling to can ward of hallowing? Because Lucatiel always struck me more as having pride in the POSITION her skills had gotten her (Now lost irreversibly) then those skills themselves. Bernhart on the other hand seems to delight in his swordsmanship itself. To him, his path still remains and being undead (if he is) only makes sure he may walk it for far longer. It may be subtle a difference, but that sense of fulfillment and pride may just be why he never as much as show signs of going hollow.

He pits himself against the worst Drangleic has to offer just like you. But unlike you, he isn't able to respawn at a bonfire. Unlike you, Benhart can actually DIE. And he keeps fighting anyway. Not for kingdom, not for coin, not for faith. But because it's FUN.

I have this feeling that Benhart is not of Dragnleic of our time but rather the Drangleic of the past. He appears in the memory of Orro (I think) after his journey is over and there he stays. Since the demnsions are convelouted it could be he found himself in the Drangleic of the future and thus why he is so calm in the memory. He has seen whats going to happen and he realises there's no escape. Could also be he is from a time befoe the fire faded and thus why he isn't hollowing. Also I believe he was like Vengarl, a merc hired to protect the kingdom, though it would be interesting to see who killed Vengarl.

My idea is that Benhart's family DOES have a Moonlight Greatsword. But in the journey to test himself, Benhart wielded this fake to prove that he does can swing their family's sword AS a sword and not some means of spamming. This is probably also the reason he willingly gives you a Bluemoon Greatsword as a sign of friendship. It's just a fake.

I think that with the new final of Scholar of the First Sin, if our character decides to walk away and refuses to take the Throne and choose between Light and Dark (Link the Flame or not, thus accepting to continue the Cycle) then it will be Benhart to do so, accepting the position of Next Monarch that we refused. A bit like that story/theory (which I think came from Myazaki himself) of Solaire Linking the Flame if the Chosen Undead goes for the Dark Lord ending in Dark Souls.

This guy is weird. he resides in memory, you can even find him in the DLC as a summon... this guy is just everywhere! reminds me of the Dark Souls character who was supposed to travel along the main character and meet up with him every now and then but then got removed (or at least changed, since he simply comits suicide in the Asylum after freeing you)

When you think of it, in a lore/cannon sense given how far he made it, shouldn't his gear have been possible to find in 3, even if you just get it by trading with the crow? His helm was cool, or did Myazaki not have an interest in making Jugo cannon like Mirrah?

Corrosive ants in Jugo? Where'd you hear that piece? Sounds sweet. And dat thumbnail is great. Your "art slave" continues to do great work. And nice lore episode as well. I don't really like Benhart however. He's not a great warrior, and he's just popping up wherever all the time. Especially the Memories. I would like him more if him, and any character in Dark Souls 2, if they actually had some story and questline to them. It's all vague, and barely there.

Silver Mont I never use them, so that's probably why I never heard o' it. I don't think the ant is from Jugo. I think it's more likely something Aldia created. At least that's what I figure.

Excellent video. One issue: You only need the King's Ring to get to the fog door in the Shrine of Want, not the Ashen Mist Heart. Logically, Benhart could have the Heart too, but we cannot infer that he has the Heart simply by him being in the Shrine. I understand it's probably just a game mechanic, but I find it odd that Benhart, Vengarl, and the player all have the King's Ring, yet the ring is a unique and singular object.

Freke Out That's maybe the reason why Vengarl can be summoned for the Ancient Dragon fight and why the Ancient Dragon himself says ''Yet another stands before us'' clearly i think Benhart had the same fate as the main character but decided to help us instead, i really think that if we failed to beat Nashandra, Benhart would come and kill her to fulfill his duty like us.

I don't know if we're meant to think too much about how certain characters move about during the story, like how Benhart gets to the giant memories or how his summon sign appears in the Throne of Want, along with Vengarl's. He'd need an Ashen Mist Heart of his own, and to get that he'd have to acquire the King's Ring (and so would Lucatiel for that matter, to arrive at Aldia's Mansion), which just seems like a very unlikely possibility if we're meant to believe these characters exist in the same world as ours. Which in itself has never been a given to me, since the whole system with being able to summon people from other worlds (who also supposedly exist in our own world), has never been properly explained, instead just being dismissed with the "time is screwed up in Lordran" excuse from DS1. Plot convenience I suppose, but it sure would be nice to have some kind of reasonable explanation to stuff like this.

CreativityCurve Yeah, it's best not to think too much about how the multiple layered worlds thing works as it gets very confusing and ultimately it's not that important. Whether Benhart and Solaire "phase" into our world at certain points and then phase out again, or they are there all the time... well, doesn't make too much difference, ultimately.

At the end you reminded me of how he's in the Sunken City DLC...I do not recall if he appears in the Second. What if...FROMSoft pulls what they did with Jester Thomas- except Benhart tries to stop us and take the throne for himself in the last or ending of all the DLC? Just something to think about.
