Dark Souls Lore - Lucatiel & Aslatiel of Mirrah
One of the most requested characters, today! And one of the few in Dark Souls II whose story arc has a beginning, middle and end. Of course, that end might not be as satisfactory as we would wish.
Unfortunately, I do not know where you can get a replica Lucatiel hat. But I do know where you can get neat stickers/shirts and other merchandise stuffs with that awesome thumbnail art of Lucatiel, right here: www.redbubble.c...
Also, check out the artist's Patreon page: / natuprunk

+MadmanGoneMad2012 Unlikely. She probably learned the use of the human effigy from the old Fire Keepers, much like us. So, losing her memory of that encounter would mean she also forgot everything that happened in her life before that meeting, which's obviously not the case. My guess is she feigns to not know what is the effigy's use and gives it to you to help you. Of course, she won't deliberately say it, she's too stubborn and too proud to give away her sympathy for a total stranger. Still, I like to see it as a selfless act, similar to Solaire when he was helping us.

Lucatiel is hands down my favorite character in the souls series. Mostly because you realize that she's just as human as you, which is sad. You constantly see through the story her losing her mind, and horrified by the thought of it constantly. When she gives her final plead for you to simply remember her is the most heartbreaking thing that I've come across

Exactly. The story of how the world of Dark Souls works is too arcane for me to enjoy. Even having it explained to me, it's still in too many bits and pieces for me to care. But Dark Souls 2 isn't about the First Fire or the Abyss or any of that. It is simply about the humans who live in this world, stuck in and endless cycle, of kingdoms rising and falling. Of times so long past that even the gods are dead and their names forgotten, and anything less important is utterly unknown. Gwyns name is no longer remembered, and Lucatiel is afraid the same will happen to her. You can remember her name a little bit longer, but no matter how long the Bearer of the Curse reigns as the King of Drangleic, he too will turn to ash, and be forgotten.

One thing I'd like to note--you mention that Lucatiel herself says she doesn't know what the Human Effigy is for, and gives it to you. But what you need to remember is that the game itself states that on close inspection, the effigies begin to look familiar, or as is implied sometimes, like oneself. The exact description says that it changes, depending on who is doing the looking. The most likely candidates for what Luca sees are herself, or possibly her brother. Now, my thought is that it's her herself; I'll explain in a moment, but consider firstly that, on first meeting a kind and interesting stranger, she'd be less likely to give them a small statue of her brother, than of herself. However, Lucatiel's story involves herself. Not in a selfish way, though she believes so. Instead, it's about her feelings of loss, how she is dealing with or rather struggling to deal with the eventual loss of her memories, humanity, and her self. This not only indicates that she would me more likely contemplative on remembering herself--via seeing her features and her distinctive look in a small statue--but would seek other ways to be remembered. A big part of Lucatiel's worries is that she wouldn't be remembered at all after her eventual disappearance and hollowing. This, to me, adds up to one small fact. Lucatiel sees herself in her human effigy... and she passes this on to the very first stranger to show a deep interest in her via chatting. This is so this stranger, who shows an interest in who she is, a vibrancy of life she doesn't posses, and at least some measure of care... can remember her. She gives you a human effigy that to her looks like her, so that you can remember what she looks like for as long as you posses it. That's what I think.

I feel like what happened in Aldia's keep was that Lucatiel experienced what you did - she was invaded by either the hollowed or bloodthirsty version of her brother and... Defeated him, after defeating him and seeing what he had become, the process of her hollowing sped up drastically, it makes sense as since finding Aslatiel and defeating him were Lucatiel's goals if she had been defeated herself she would still have motivation to best him, it makes much more sense to assert that she had defeated him, but victory was not sweet nor fulfilling but bitter as she realized that what Aslatiel had degraded into was her future as well. I think that the idea of getting her armor set before entering Aldia's Keep is a symbolic thing, after you get the armor set you can don the set and use the sword - with this the player can experience what Lucatiel had just gone through in Aldia's keep: an invader wearing the same garb as you, a duel between swordsmen of Mirrah.

Perhaps the flustered Lucatiel found last in the shed outside Aldia's Keep had just battled her brother's insane invading phantom, lost, and then respawned at that bonfire. Devastated by her brother's loss of self, Lucatiel is on the edge of unraveling. If the player failed her quest, she'll despair and progress severely into hollowing. I'd like to think that completing her quest gives her the solace to continue adventuring.
@Xtrooper116
@Xtrooper116 9 жыл бұрын
I believe the significance of her dying where she does has to do with the fact that her brother was just ahead of her in his journey. I believe he was invading knowing that she would follow after him and seek him. I don't think he was invading so much to kill but rather you get invaded because that is where his spirt stands guard waiting for his sister, giving her one more chance to best him in a life or death struggle. I support this claim with the fact the on his sword is a message he wrote to someone special. Most likely a word to his sister encouraging her to continue her struggle, or maybe praising her for finally besting him. Maybe her brother was not cursed but rather left because his sister was cursed of feared that she might one day become cursed, and left seeking a cure much like a protective older sibling would. Maybe on his journey he became hollow or maybe he simply reached his limit and decided to wait at the spot for his sister knowing her skill, and knowing that she too would most likely grow faint where he did. It's also significant because it follows the theme that she never could best her brother. Her brother even made his journey just a few step further than she could once again besting her. I believe the reason she gives you her armor is because she knows that she has failed again and wishes you to use her sword, armor and blade to do what she could not. To finish her brother and set his should free. Because you never fight her as a hollow I believe that she, being an honorable knight takes her own life shortly after you leave. She's asks you to remember her because she feels that her life as been nothing but a failure and see no reason why anyone would remember her (forever cast in the shadow of her older brother). on her sword I believe was maybe not so much a promise for her older brother but rather on based on him. A promise to her self to one day surpass him, or perhaps to find him and have one last battle.

Upon encountering waifu 249 many people experience similar feelings, she appears to be distant at first, and that distance compels many to press her, where she will act as if charmed by your tenacity. Periodically thereafter, future encounters with Waifu 249 tend to degenerate into masses of tears as she gives you a humanity that she COULD have used to reverse her hollowing at least temporarily. It was here that I determined waifu 249 was not very bright. In my encounters with waifu 249 I found myself saving and quitting because she fumbled off a ledge large enough to accommodate a quadropedal pyrophobic monstrosity to #Rek my face. As these instances repeated themselves, and as time progressed I discovered waifu 249 is in fact, Jester Thomas in disguise. Do not be alarmed, this revelation should come as no shock to you, as Jester Thomas trolling you is the only plausible explanation for a supposedly "dexterous" master knight of a land where it's knighthood or bust to consistently fall to her death off wide ledges. Perhaps her brother left her because he quickly realized she would get him killed, maybe the reason why she can't fight her hollowfication is because she just keeps falling to her death. Perhaps her silly hat, looks like a bird... because she's realized gravity is her worst enemy...

When Lucatiel is talking about when she came here and why, I don't think she's talking slowly/stuttering because she's losing her memory to the curse, but rather she's hesitating because she doesn't want to out-right say that she became afflicted with the curse. As for the Human Effigy, I think it's likely that she either forgot what they were for thanks to the curse, or never knew in the first place, but still managed to recognize it as a useful item. I like the idea that she fought Aslatiel before we met up with her at Aldia's Keep, it gives more of a reason for her to be hunched over by the bonfire. And personally, I believe that Aslatiel is Lucatiel's brother. It would be too coincidental for him just to be some other random Mirrah Knight. As for his invasion, I think he's invading because of our relationship with Lucatiel. It's possible that he's either fully or mostly hollow at this point, but I believe that on some level he's still aware of who Lucatiel is and think's we're responsible for her condition, thus he invades us to take revenge for his sister. EDIT: Oh, and as for the Smelter Demon thing, yeah, we don't meet her in Iron Keep, but we DO see her at the first Earthen Peak bonfire and that interaction is required for her sign to appear before Smelter. Also, there's probably not much meaning to it, but her summon sign also appears in the Grand Cathedral and she can be summoned for the fight with the final boss of the Ivory King DLC.

MisterPuck85 I agree with you almost on everything... but I like to believe that she didin't meet her brother, when we find her at Aldia's Keep... this misfortune gives the story a "sweet sadness" (and japanese people love their "sweet sadness" XD)... I mean, she was so close to Aslatiel and yet she missed him... on a positive note, maybe it's a good thing she didn't see him in that state (either if he was hollow or blood/power thirsty) if I'm "right"... consequently, I don't think Aslatiel was trying to get revenge on us: he was one of the two things I said earlier... about her summon sign in Eleum Loyce, I'm so sad it's almost impossible to know if we're supposed to go there before defeating Nashandra... because if we should go there after (and the "befitting a monarch" inscriptions might mean that), then maybe it means we saved her (or that she put that summon sign down before dying)... an hollow can't be summoned, right?
@MisterPuck
@MisterPuck 9 жыл бұрын
Relaxed I disagree, but to each their own. As for "when" you're supposed to go to Eleum Loyce, I think part of the experience of Dark Souls isn't just finding out about the story of the world, but also crafting your own. Since you can head to Eleum Loyce before ever setting foot in Drangleic Castle, I would say it doesn't really matter when you go there, or even if you go at all. It's up to you. I mean, on my first play through of the game, I completely skipped the Huntsmens Copse and would have missed it completely had I not been watching an LP of the game while I played.
@reporterid
@reporterid 9 жыл бұрын
I wrote a wall of text but deleted it, so long story short: DS is a progression, with each boss being (often) harder than the precedent... therefore there is some sort of order for bosses and areas... the optional ones can be skipped simply because they have little connection to the main story and because it'd have been a too linear gameplay to implement (DS has never been so linear)... DLCs are optional, hence they can be totally skipped... but they have an order (because we find their teleport fountains in different places) and the required item to complete them entirely (the Ashen Mist Heart for the CotOIK) place at least the last 2 DLCs after Dragon Shrine... my definition of order in this case is a "suggested" order, therefore I understand why some people don't "understand" this XD

Lucatiel is my favorite Souls NPC. I often find that the story is too arcane and unclear to really get into. Even when I have it explained to me, it's more interesting than entertaining. But Lucatiel is not a story of a world with mysterious workings and unknown history. Lucatiel is a story of a single woman, lost to the curse. I don't need to know the history of the Fire and the Dark in order to understand the terror of losing ones mind.

Invasions. What does it mean to invade? Well from what's been made known. (Thank you Solaire of Astora) Time is convoluted so if it truly is Lucatiels brother invading us he's doing it from another time, another place. I've wondered several times, why Aldia's keep? Why there? I'm thinking he didn't come to Drangliec to seek a cure, but for defending someone who might find an answer to the curse. To defend Aldia, n he's invading us from a time in the past when Aldia's keep still stood proud and Aldia was still at work. So he's only doing his job as from where he's invading us would imply he's a gatekeeper, invading those who seek the knowledge of his lord. But why there? Well because as a "gatekeeper" his job would be to well defend the inner gates and due to how invasion mechanics works you can only invade an area that's reasonably close to where you're invading from. But I do agree that the message and the promise is probably something along the lines of her promise being "One day I will best you in combat" and her brothers message being "Strive to best me dear sister, strive to be the best you can be" or something along those lines. Motivating either to keep in shape as to not fall to the others blade.

Silver Mont Well who's too say that it doesn't make sense? You have the power to travel through time killing who ever you'd like without severe consequences (cue Blue Sentinels forming) now if you're a blood thirsty little midget. He'd probably abuse this until someone stopped him, that someone probably being Targray. Now we're in the same position blood thirsty and a longing to kill so we abuse the same power to travel through time, with the consequence of Targray's Sentinels hunting us down in return. At least that's how I think it could be explained in a way.

Its the reason why you can summon epic legendary heroes to boss fights. When in reality they have been dead for hundreds of years. In DS2, it was more or less included because it was expected to be there. Almost never mentioned or explained in conversation.

Azatiel could be a reference to Azazel, in old Hebrew it either means scapegoat, or more likely in this context, fallen angel. This would make sense, as if lucatiel is the bringer of light, and angels are beings of light, if the brother is attacking you he is obviously fallen, diminished, or mad.

Lucatiel is one of the most humanised characters in the souls series, because she brings up a real terrifying revelation that I never realised until then. With time, everyone will eventually forget your name, even in your family. The fact that in 4-5 generations you will no longer exist in name is far more terrifying than death itself imho.

@DumahsAssassin

I noticed that when Lucatiel talks about undead she uses male pronouns. Maybe she's thinking of her brother when she says "An Undead gradually loses his humanity, until his wits degrade completely. Finally, he turns Hollow, and preys upon others. And a Hollow can never be human again." So maybe Lucatiel knew all along that her brother had went hollow and started preying on people. And when she was stricken with the curse as well then she planned to go and kill him since he was such a famed and skilled knight, she probably didn't want someone like that roaming around killing people? I'm not sure, just something I thought of when I noticed she kept using "he". Unless of course that's more of her denial like you said and she's just saying that so it doesn't relate to her.

I think she gives you the human effigy because she no longer recognizes it as herself, as you the player do in the character creation menu. Remember how the old fire keeper shows it to us and says “yes it’s you”. It is like the act of breaking one of these effigies is an act of self recognition.

I have a feeling that your last meeting with her is when she has finally lost her mind. and the fight against the look-a-like is actually her, and the name of hers is like the way it is. Her realization that she can't find the chance of finding her brother causes her to finally turn hollow. She finally forgets her name, or at least can't grasp it fully anymore. As she hollows, she's still on the idea that if she kills you she can stay sane. That invasion is her last attempt to stay alive, or the insane part of her. We can't avoid the fact that she asks you to remember her name, and the fact that she couldn't makes it all the more ironic. You never see her brother, and just her, as we don't even know his name yet. This would explain why you never see a hollow with her name after she turns. Just a theory.

@Silver Mont What are you thought on the Lucatiel hypothesis? The one that said the hero also lost some of his memory and reason due to the curse, When you see a short transition, you could have travel day and week to get there, but forget it. After, your mind make false memory to fill the gap, like a impossible elevator between a windmill and a volcano, or a short tunnel strait to a castle seen far away. If the theorie is right, Lucatiel state change each time you see her because month and years have pass since your last meeting and you two wander around for far longer than you think.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 10 жыл бұрын
Hmm... yeah, I think I've heard the time/space theory that you're talking about. Personally? I don't think that's the case. I think that's just coming up with an explanation for (what is, in my opinion, poor level design) like the floating Iron Keep etc. But still, it's a fairly fun theory. That said, there are other characters to consider. If it had been months and years, most other characters would mention it, surely? Benhart, Shanalotte, etc etc

i like this theory. i know it's just fans trying to justify bad game design, but hey, if it works it works. it would also fix the problem where if you look at the collision map for DS2 many areas are on top of each other; by this theory they're actually far away and would only be on top of each other if our false memories were correct
@Ryzen776
@Ryzen776 10 жыл бұрын
quetch2 I also like the way it explain some game mechanic in a rp way. Bondfire doesn't "teleport" you, Npc also doesn't teleport to get to Majula faster than you. When you reset something at a bonfire, the ennemie come back at their usual place because you pass a long time staring at the flamme. Maybe it was not intented this way by the dev, but i really like it and nothing directly go contest it. Sometime, the NPC seem to implie time have past since your last visit. They are also curse like you and time is hard to gasp in a dead kingdom full of undead where nothing signifiant ever happen since everybody are stuck inside a loop.

As a note for how Mirrah is embroiled in war. I wonder if said war is the same war the land of Forossa fought. Both are lands to the distant east that face hardship and unrest with their war. Though Forossa obviously lost war it had. And it's hard to tell from the description if Mirrah currently has unrest or is still in war. Considering the odd wording, it could be implied Mirrah joined an existing war between Forossa and some other unnamed kingdom. Which side they could have taken if that's the case is unknown.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 9 жыл бұрын
Xixstix Doctor I think Mirrah and Forossa are probably different lands - and at least a portion of Forossa's power moved north and became Eleum Loyce, with the Ivory King. And others seem to have gone where they would, joining as mercs for other countries etc.

Silver Mont Oh I didn't mean to imply that Mirrah and Forossa was apart of the same land. Rather I meant that the war mentioned that they both endured was the same. Or it could not be related at all and they were just separate wars of their own.

Shes scared of the curse because she watched it effect her brother. He disappeared like siegmeyer to stave the curse. The promise maybe was"I promise I will end your suffering with a cure or my blade". The way he invades in aldias keep means that maybe just maybe aldia hired him as a guard or navlaan put him there using his gift to woo hollows into killing people. Or maybe he was tracking his sister in order to get her while she was down.

Why would anyone leave wealth behind? Aslatiel was the most badss knight in his class,why would he just leave that? Also we notice that her hollowing is slow, She hasnt experinced death so it seems. Maybe her brothers hollowing was the same as hers,slowly taking over. Aslatiel might have feared going hollow around his sister,maybe because he knew he would slay her being the better swordsman and all. I also wonder how old these two are. Because they fought together in youth but lucatiels sword is just a normal mirrah sword but aslatiels is old and old is a very odd word from throws around. We have no idea when this all happened,Him leaving and her searching I mean. Maybe shes 100's of years old and I dont think undead age.
@MackDogLive
@MackDogLive 9 жыл бұрын
Another thought, going on what you you said about "A cure or my blade", is perhaps, with Lucatiel usually so near, that Aslatiel purposefully invaded in the hopes they either (A) In his hollowed mindset, only felt her presence (being her beloved sibling), and mistook you for her, or (B), in the hopes that perhaps, after you've been given the Mirrah Greatsword, that you might try it out on the enemies ahead, and fulfill the wish his sister made out to him with that same blade. Another thought, one I like more, is simply the cruel twist of fate of her curse finally hollowed her mind much like the chosen undead before finally confronting her brother to a final duel (I mean, while you play the game, you rarely think about linking the fires, and focus more about either gathering souls for Shanalotte or to gather greater weapons, spells, and gear. The true goal is so easily forgotten.). Perhaps the message on Aslatiel's blade for Lucatiel would be "Remember your name, for I may not myself", which would emphasize and strengthen Lucatiel's near tear-jerking final quote. And perhaps her promise written on her blade is "I will remember your name," Which would be even more ironic, given that she never mentions his name even once.

I invade people because it's something to do after finishing the story, it stops me from leaving Dark Souls. Now a lot of people compare putting the controller down on the game for the last time to their character going hollow. So then could that mean that the reason invasions happen in DS2 is to give characters some purpose to peruse? A goal to work towards to avoid going hollow? That could explain why Aslatiel invades you.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 9 жыл бұрын
+blizzzard900 I mean, that's one way people could prevent themselves hollowing - it does seem related to willpower and having a clear goal. Perhaps some find the prospect of stealing humanity from others an easier, safer and more lucrative goal than simply fighting monsters.

"iel/ael" is a common suffix of Angels and sometimes Fallen/Demons in Abrahamic religions. It comes from an Old Hebrew root that translates to "of God" or "Related to God." For instance, Raphael means "It is God who Heals", whereas Uriel is "God is my light", Michael is "Who is like God", and Ramiel is "Thunder of God". It's a contextual suffix that can mean things relating to divinity and God himself. So perhaps it's "God is my light-bringer" or "One who brings Light to God" or so forth? It may also be inspired by Lucifer, the root of Lucas, Lucius, and Luca, and have the suffix to make it a more positive spin? As to why "tiel" is added to both Mirrah knights? It might be some tradition from their family, lowborn or not, or perhaps it could be added to the names of "Ascended Knights", those who come from low beginnings but rise through the ranks, as a sign that they are a gift from God, or have some divine feature.

Silver Mont If you think about it then yea, its one big connected bastille. There's a pretty big "glitch" to Sinner's Rise tho. If you are at the docks after the Flexile Sentry, look up into the sky and zoom in with your binoculars and you can actually already see Sinner's Rise itself. Even the chambers with exploding mummies and the pathway leading to The Lost Sinner. Quite funny to see but at the same time pretty saddening, you should try it out and see for yourself.

The message and the promise are something very simple as you would expect... not really that important I think their story is just an example of what the curse does and why people in the game don't just say "Fuck it I'm immortal now... why would I want a cure?" What Lucatel teaches us is basically "Without your memories you have nothing and you are nobody" Also I always thought Aslatel was human because ... well he invaded as a red phantom and you need to be human to do that... uh and he doesn't fight like a hollow either ... and you're not the first person to say he's hollow ... am I missing something? or do people just think "He has no reason to attack me ....he must be hollow" because I don't think that's the case ... maybe he's trying to stop us ... maybe he knows our intent to activate the time loop and he doesn't agree and wants to stop us Maybe he met Vendrick,Ancient Dragon,Emerald Herald,Nashandra... way before we did and is aware of the never ending loop that's happening...

Alex Juve They've kinda messed up "what it means" to be hollow in the sequel. Because sometimes you fight enemies who are clearly MEANT to be hollow, but don't really make sense from a lore perspective. I think it's just another problem they had in making it a direct sequel. If it had been a spiritual successor with a new set of "world rules" then I feel they would'a escaped a lot of the problems the game has.

Silver Mont Interesting question ... Do you think there will be a Moonlight Greatsword in Bloodborne? I think yes but it's just a question of will you be able to actually pick it up and use it ...or will it just be a display model stuck in a rock you could find in some kind of hidden side area where you can interact with it and "it does not move"
@SilverMont

Alex Juve I think it'd be a good fit, if they did include the Moonlight Sword. The moon seems to be "fairly" prominent in Bloodborne

What happens if you let aslatiel invade you, he drops the old mirrah greatsword and THEN you go and talk to lucatiel?, maybe she recognizes the Old mirrah greatsword, she reads the promise and is saved by the sword of ver brother wich ( as a reminder) keeps her memories intact.

At yet, in the end, they likely would forget all the same. And when looking down at the sword, who knows what they'd think - reading a message in their own hand and not recognising it.

+Silver Mont I just realized something. The ivory dlc is accessed way before aldias keep. It's in tge shrine of winter (smart name for the gateway to eluem loyce). And you get the key to enter eleum loyce in drangleic castle. With this knowledge it is not odd that she appears there, what is odd is that she don't appear in the other dlcs as they're accessed before the shrine of winter.
@sasugakirin

+Steev Well, dying repeatedly makes you more and more hollow. It could be that he killed her and she re-formed at the bonfire (maybe even multiple times), and we find her on her very lowest health, barely still in her right mind. I've heard that the creators said that losing or completing your goals can make you give up and go hollow. It's possible Lucatiel was there at the keep trying to beat her brother over and over. When you walk in and kill him, she has nothing left to go on for, and that's why she disappears, having lost her goal that drove her onward was the last step to make her hollow.

CrayolaAutumn ...Afternoon tea. I can't really think of many, haha. Besides from my accent, I'm probably one the most "un-English" people there is. I don't watch Doctor Who, I don't like tea and I don't like salt and vinegar on my chips.

Silver Mont Afternoon tea sounds like an important festival if you have it every day! In all seriousness, that's totally cool. I haven't really liked Doctor who that much since David Tennant left, and I don't get the whole vinegar on chips thing. However, if one were to accuse me of being a tea fanatic, I'd have to say that they knew me too well. I kinda just like the astringency and the warm, perky fumes, especially on cold winter "nights" when the sun is gone by 5 and I wonder what's gone wrong with the world. Seriously, 5 o'clock?! What is so important that the sun has to rush out the door to get to every day?

I have a theory about Aslatiel, though maybe I'm not the first. But what if it's Lucatiel? Don't forget, "I beg of you, please remember my name, for I may not myself." What if Aslatiel is just a slurred name that Lucatiel now calls herself, because she doesn't remember her own name? Now, there's another reason for this, because there is a rare item, called the Old Mirrah Greatsword, which has an additional descriptional text describing "there's a message inscribed on the sword. A promise to someone". So far, it seems maybe this could have been Lucatiel's attempt to remind herself, or an oath she kept long ago for her brother. Plus, "old" mirrah greatsword, while different in text and stats compared to the regular version she gives you, it may just be that she gave you a different sword, and kept her own personal one. Then again, maybe my theory is wrong, because it would depend on whether Aslatiel has the same model as Lucatiel or not, which seems to be the case.
@SilverMont

Well, maybe, but also remember that the Nameless usurper is heavily implied to be Licia and yet she has a completely different face (but that may be because Licia's unique model can't function as an invader, NU uses a player model)

Nah, she says she has no idea what it does. And I don't think she met the Firekeepers to explain stuff to her. I think she just found it off a corpse or something and maybe thought it was neat. Though it still doesn't excuse the Character from not telling her what it does.
