I held off on making this until the Ringed City was out - I was hoping we'd get a little more information concerning Karla, I suppose we got a smidgen what with Alva showing up. I'm not sure what it was about Karla, but something about her as a character was very appealing to me. Along with Quelana of Dark Souls and Yuria of Demon's Souls, I've always liked that character type.

To be completly honest, I didn't even know Karla was in the game until I finally wanted to do Sirris's quest line. When I looked up the firelink npcs to find Sirris's quest- I saw Karla's name and I was so confused. I hate the jail area so I always run through it as fast as I could- I never took the time to adventure far in it than needed throughout the two years I've played ds3 on and off.

Probably the dark in general and the nature of man. Dark is related to humans and men but it's also really dark and scary looking (go visit oolicile for evidence of that) are they saying that man deep down is really dark and scary? When we lose our humanity we become monsters. Too much humanity makes us monsters. I take it as Miyazaki is basically saying humans are monsters deep down and everything else is just a lie. Remember what aldia said "no matter how grand or exquisite...a lie will remain a lie!"

This is the way I think it goes. Zullie is a child of the abyss/mannus. Zullie and Alva fall in love. They have a daughter, Karla. Thus she is a child of the "abyss". Karla is rejected/despised for some reason by someone. Perhaps Zullie and Karla had a falling out and Karla ran away. Alva, who loves his daughter goes in search of her. Thus he is The Seeker of The Spurned. He finds her in irithyll dungeon, but the jailers kill him just before he could rescue her. Then you rescue her. At some point Zullie heads to The Ringed City, perhaps she seeks the Dark Soul or the Abyss as she is a fragment of Mannus. But dies within the city. That's my theory. PS. Karla is the best.

But Alva existed before the events of ds2 which happen 100s of year before ds3. Two theories. 1. The lore was changed and Alva doesn't exist in ds2 and his story with zullie didn't happen until much later. This is reinforced by the changed lore of the sheild of want, (ignoring the existence of vendrick) 2. At some point Alva became immortal and thus was able to survive the 100s of years between the games. But this wouldn't explain why zullie may be alive. He could have kept the robes and brought them to the city. Also Karla never dies. So that is why she is still alive. If zullie was killed in the city and Alva guards her grave or she died a long time ago. I couldn't say.

@Enclave Communications Officer Except that your character dies eventually at the end of all the games. If you link the fire in ds1 you A. Burn up and die or B. Become a Lord of cinder and get killed by some other chosen undead later. This is proven because your character is not the Lord of cinder at the end of ds2 or ds3. Your ds1 character is not mentioned at all which would be weird if he was still alive. That's because he's dead and 100s of years have passed so everyone has forgotten you. So to solve that, you play as a different guy in the other games. If it was the same guy, how you you link the fire and get engulfed in flames then end up jumping into a portal to drangleic and sit on a throne, to waking up in a coffin. The awnser is it's not the same guy. Having everlasting life as long as you have a goal doesn't help if you already completed the goal. Also patches is a reference. I doubt is the same one. He literally made an appearance in the Armored Core games as well as the moonlight greatsword. He doesn't even have strong lore implications until the Ringed city and even then he just disappears at the end of his quest line. And if you go pack to him at the shrine at the end if the Ringed city, he makes no reference to those events. Proving he's more of a "hey we remember that" joke character than and acual reference able character. He wasn't even in ds2 proving he was supposed to die along with all the others character over the years. But that was changed in ds3 because that game is made up entirely of references and does nothing original (not saying it's bad, just reused plots and characters). Every character is a reference to previous games so obviously patches would appear dispite it breaking lore. And the entire story is ambiguous. So there are many different ways it could be portrayed. So in a way both of us could be right or wrong. But my opinion sound much more logical imo.

I've wondered as to why the Daughters of Manus; Father of The Abyss, were all women. Then it hit me: Dusk. Dusk the princes of Oolacile was the focus of his life - perhaps the love of his life, too. Maybe within his last moments of his existence after the Chosen Undead defeated the primeval man in battle, his last thoughts were of her and the life he wanted to have... hence came forth the children of Manus; the daughters that would have been his own from the woman he loved above all else. ... Well, I just made myself rather sad.

Honestly, with all these details, it makes me wonder if _Zullie_ was the shard of Manus bearing his envy, and that was why she pursued and tormented Alva during his quest, and then Karla was their daughter (...perhaps born before Zullie at last retreated to the Ringed City), herself bearing the essential nature of the Abyss. What's not in doubt is that she's an amazing character. I love all the surprising little bits of dialogue she starts dropping when you learn spells from her.

Well, I really feel like there was something cut involving Zullie, but we've very little info to go on. Hell, we know there was a significant storyline cut including the Emerald Herald. Or at least, I think there was? I don't remember the source off the top of my head, but apparently we were originally going to meet her during the prologue when she was a child, give her the feather, and then she'd give it back to us later in the game, to signify more meaning to it yada yada

I just made simple conclusion, Karla is daughter of Alva and zullie, and Alva was seeking to save her, but didn't make it and got killed by jailers. I also wish there was quest where u have to do stuff for Carla for dark spells and for the last one she gives herself up to you and u get climax spell as the reward😉

My opinion: Karla is Zullie's daughter based on the spell she sells. That was my first take when I read her spell/hat descriptions and found Alva next to her prison.

The name Karla may come from "carlin," (Gaellic "Caillech" or "Cailleach," I think). It's an archaic word for "old woman" or "hag" that can be used to mean "witch." I think the literal meaning of the root word is something like "cloak/ed" or "veil/ed."

My idea for it is Zullie and Alva had a kid, but after people found out about their dark magics, they went to throw the three in prison. Alva and Zullie caught wind of this and began heading for the ringed city, a safe haven. Sadly they were found out before making it to the ringed city. Alva and Zullie were able to hold their own, but Karla was taken away before they could stop the jailers. Alva asked Zullie to continue the trek while he went to save Karla. Sadly Alva could never reach Karla, he either turned hollow in the process of trying or mistook you for someone who could've hurt her. As for Zullie, despite making it to the ringed city, she found out the city wasn't the safe haven they had hoped and was killed instead.

I agree with a lot of it, one of the best things about the Souls series are the stories like this that make us have to question everything, form connections where we can, and speculate the rest. I felt like a smart Ashen one when I realised that Karla was likely a child of Manus (from the 'a' ending, 'child of the abyss', etc..) Also, I honestly don't know why, but the Karla/Yuria/Alva/Zullie lore is some of my favourite in the series. Something about how Alva worked for Seretta, Only to fail, and spend the rest of his days with the one who initially tried to cause his failure. It's simple, but I can't help but love it. Having Alva invade me, before seeing his armour near a Zullie look-alike on my first run gave me nostalgia chills ^-^ (I also love how he and Zullies gear reappears in TRC). Awesome video, glad you finally made it!

I like to think Nadalia represented Manus's love or at least his longing. She has some hard to hear dialog which you can listen in full to here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYnVf3Z5nbmMm9k It's clear to me that she thinks we're the Old Iron King (we had to take his soul to access her area after all). Unlike the other daughters of Manus, who only saw their kings as a means to an end, Nadalia's dialog seems to indicate that her king was the only thing that mattered to her. She did keep herself in solitude, but only because she was morning her lost husband. Dusk said that Manus possess a longing for his lost pendant, it is my belief that that longing became Nadalia.

Silver Mont, With exception of the last part, that Karla represents the Envy of Manus; I think the rest seems more plausible. I think you got it right at the beginning when you mention the meaning & origin of the name Karla, which on the Google search appears in Scandinavian the meaning of the name Karla is: Womanly; strength. Feminine of Karl. This suggest to me that Karla could represent the Strength of Manus or even better, the human part that Manus lost and after all, we find Karla in a prison dungeon, where she was kept for who knows how long, where all the jailers had already lost their minds and hollow and yet, Karla was the only one who remained human.

I think an interesting thing to note is that During the Ringed City DLC, The Giants summon a spirit of a Dark sorcerer wearing Zullies Set and uses a spell similar to Dark Edge, The difference being it leaving a dark fire trail. Maybe that points to their possible relationship. Who Knows?

I always took that Karla was the daughter of Alva X Zulie. But never realised Dark Edge alluded to the daughter committing suicide and Karla is alive, Zulie is dead, so maybe Karla is the mother of Zulie, but that makes Alva not the father since DS2 suggested Alva fell in love with Zulie. I think it might be intresting to note that the adjudicator giants summon a witch using an advanced form of Dark Edge. Any idea on who that may be?

I mean... we meet Alva Right before the Irithyl dungeons where Karla Meets. And Alva is the Seeker of the Spurned. Karla is spurned and her Ashes say that there's no one to search for her anymore, implying that Alva was searching for her. Because there's no other logical explanation to Why Alva Invaded us before the place where Karla is and there's also no explanation to why we find Alva's corpse right in front of Karla's cell. So clearly Alva was seeking for Karla. And according to DS2, there was no Karla there. And Karla of DS3 isn't Zully, because we find her corpse in the Ringed City. The only *theory confirming* clue is the description of the Dark Blade thingy that she has. And it says that it is passed down from *mother* to *daughter.* So, what are left with? She has a spell that can only be given to daughters and is the one who Alva seeks. But Zully was also spurned, but Karla isn't Zully, because we find Zully's corpse in the Ringed City. And so that means that Karla is either Zully's mother or Zully is Karla's. And the most logical answer is... *"Zully is Karla's mother."* Because if Karla was Zully's mother then they would've mentioned that in DS2. But there's nothing mentioning any kind of Karla in DS2. That means that Karla wasn't born then. And so that makes her Zully's Child. Because Alva was *"Looking for her".* The end. There's nothing else that can be logically and objectively theorized here in my opinion. Thank you for reading.

The only thing I have an issue with is that all of the shards of Manus all had kings that they sought. If that is the case, and Zullie were a shard of Manus that would be mean that Alva may had been a king as well just maybe not with a grandeur status.

One thing is certain, they are not the same person. I think that Karla is an impostor... wanting love so much she becomes an impostor of somebody loved so deeply, Alva would sacrifice anything to have her. But once he get to her cell and found out its not Zullie, he thought she is already dead and took his life. However, I like the theory that Karla is taughter of Zullie and Alva, but then, why is she not with them in The Ringed City? Home of the Hollows? But locked up in a cell somewhere?

You barely see her face, but something about Karla is just so...precious. She reminds me in some ways of Raven from Teen Titans(the good one, not GO), and I always like her more than Starfire. We find Karla in a jail. The entrance to the Chasm of the Abyss is a hole in a wall of a jail/dungeon visibly made from the inside. Maybe the "shunned" nature of Manus/Humanity/Dark? EDIT 1 Envy is, in a general rule, shunned by most cultures, while (ironically) Greed is usually far less judged... EDIT 2 "Shun" is merely a synonym of "Spurn".

heres what i think. zullie represent the pursuer as envy and love. she starts out as a means to annoy or even hurt alva in his duty to protect saint serreta. but later she gain a deep compassion or even love after becaming a travelling partner for longer than she intended. she starts out as an envious entity yet found love in the end. ill get out now

I find it interesting that Griggs of Vinheim, from DS1, has the same farewell dialogue as Karla. When you leave Griggs and don't make a purchase he says, "Good-bye, then. Do stay safe." Whereas Karla says, "Do stay safe." I know that this is a common thing to say, but I can't help but see the similarities in it. Two individuals that practiced sorcery, relative in appearances, same dialogue at the same times and some strain on the same words as they say it. Just a thought, although I don't know if they're connected in any way--it would be quite interesting if they were though.

The abyss has always been one of the most interesting points of lore for me in Dark Souls. It has is a pretty mysterious place, having different manifestations, the complete darkness of the Four Kings fight and the Manus fight, and the slimy oil-like substance in the Oolacile forest and the ringed city swamp. Its ability to infect or corrode seemingly everything from dragons, Kalameete and Midir, Gods (Artorious), and humans, the bloat headed Oolacile citizens, helps to make it seem like a force outside of the standard four great souls domain. This, in my opinion, makes characters with deep connections to the Abyss intrinsically interesting, and Karla is no exception. I wonder how she even knows that she is a child of the abyss, because from everything we see she is a normal human with a propensity for dark sorceries. The rest of the fragments of Manus we see have a very inhuman form, so I wonder why Karla doesn't seem to possess this feature. I was a bit disappointed that she didn't have more character development, or more information on what being a fragment of Manus allows one to actually do, because all humans are all "children of the abyss" really. This is a central point in the locus preachers sermons, and in the lore. Does this mean she possesses something more than the standard fragment of humanity a normal human has? If she collects enough humanity will she somehow be able to reform Manus by making her fragment "whole"? These are some of the things I wish we would have dived into with her character, but sadly it appears that the abyss will remain a very mysterious place/entity. This got longer than I meant it to but great video as always.

I'll be honest, the Abyss was never something I much enjoyed in Dark Souls because I didn't like how much emphasis they put on it at times. The whole "haha the abyss > all!" thing that started especially in Dark Souls III was just aggravating to me, it became less a mysterious realm / entity and more of some sort of weird anime trope.

That's fair, I think the emphasis they put on it in three was misplaced, in the first Dark Souls it felt like this mysterious realm that was always just out of view, but in three they just used it as the new weird evil to fight, I especially felt the pus of man enemies went against what we knew about the abyss and how it worked.

Have we ever given serious thoughts on how to "officially" refer to the "Abyssal Sisters"? Usually, we call them "Daughters of Manus", but is that accurate? The Sisters are more or less a scattered, reformed version of the Abyss. It's "sentient children". The thing is, Manus was/is the "Father of the Abyss", meaning that, if the Sisters are the "daughters" of the Abyss, it makes them the "Grand-daughters" of Manus. But, if we consider the Abyss of Oolacille to be incarnated by Manus, Father of the Abyss (meaning they are one and the same), then it IS accurate to call the Abyssal Sisters as the "daughters of Manus". (And, we don't even include the Abyss of New Londo here...) Kind of a mess for thoughts.

Yeah there's no official way to name them, so far as I'm aware. Iirc Alsanna refers to Manus as her "father" in the sense that she was, in a way, born of him, so I just stuck with Daughter of Manus.

So where does Alva meet his end? Where we find his armor in the prison, or at the ringed city? I'm doubtful he died at the ringed city because his armor was found at the prison on a body. Whether the body is actually Alva is up for debate I feel but what are the chances somebody other than Maughlin got a hold of his armor.

Characters like Karla are why I don't care for DS3 that much. On the surface she's clearly just a Demon's Souls reference, just under that surface is a DS2 reference, then they throw in the lore bomb that she could be a completely unaccounted for shard of Manus. What does all this mean? Nothing. She's just a set piece and another addition to the harem that the Ashen One has accumulated. Good video though Silver.
