Dark Souls III Lore - Painted World of Ariandel [Ashes of Ariandel DLC]
There's a very good chance that now I've made this video, the next DLC is going to release and answer every question I raised in this video.
Speaking of, as I never reviewed the DLC - here's my quick thoughts on it: My least favourite of the Souls DLCs. I still think it's good, but it didn't really offer anything new, in either story or gameplay, from my perspective. Honestly? I think Eleum Loyce was better, both from a "icy world" gameplay scenario perspective, and offering something interesting from a story perspective.

If you think about it, in my opinion Elfriede's ideology is actually completely opposite that of her sisters. The Sable Church and Londor believe in finding a way to usurp the flame and break the endless, destructive cycles of light and dark. Elfriede on the other hand has vowed to prevent the burning of Ariandel to let the world begin anew and break the encroaching rot. Running with the parallels her, this makes her closer to Gwyn than anyone else by desperately trying to stave off the *actual* renewal the world needs, which is to let the fire burn Ariandel away in the same way an age of darkness is needed to renew the world outside the painting. It could be this philosophical difference that led her to break away from her sisters and renounce the Church.

Matheus Esteves Monteiro I don't think that's exactly the case. Yuria's goal is to create a Lord of Hollows who could usurp the flame, not to simply allow the world to fade into darkness. Doing so would probably just start the cycle over again. Usurping the flame is the real solution, and what Kaathe and others were talking about when advocating for the Age of Man.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think Usurping the Fire is really breaking the cycle, though, personally. You can take the "First Flame" but I don't see what's to stop somebody creating a new one at some point, assuming they don't take it back. I think DaS2 handled that better, establishing that no matter what ending you took in DaS1, the cycle will begin anew at some point. Aldia/Vendrick's solution seemed a lot better, in theory. And it worked to some extent, too.
@dezopenguin9649
@dezopenguin9649 7 жыл бұрын
Except that the "End the Fire" ending seems to give us the "Cycles of Light and Dark" that DaS2 implied were a thing. DaS3, with its Lords of Cinder and Linking the Fire seems to retcon (or at least reinterpret) that cyclical implication, instead giving us a repeated cycle of fading and linking, fading and linking, but never actually falling to Dark. Whereas main-game DaS3 has three endings, though, AoA only offers two courses for the Painted World: let the current iteration continue indefinitely, falling to rot as it decays and collapses; or burn the current iteration away with fire and so leave it free to be painted anew. Father Ariandel is specifically cited as a "restorer" of the painting rather than a "painter." This makes me think of him as being similar to Gwyn or to the Chosen Undead (if we assume an Undead who linked the fire, as DaS3 implied was the canon ending of DaS1), who took active steps to preserve and renew the world as it was, but not to change it. As Gwyn extended the Age of Fire by Linking the Flame, so did Ariandel extend the "present" of the Painted World by restoring it, renewing and preserving its existence. (This "restoration" analogy would explain why so much of the Painted World of Ariamis's geography remains present in the Painted World of Ariandel. A restorer of a real-world painting does not change what is there, but strives to reclaim the original work from the damage inflicted on it by time and the environment.) The Age of Dark brought about by "Ending the Fire" seems to be the outside-world analogy to burning the painting and having the painter-girl repaint it. The fact that the corvian notes that the "outsiders" fail to do this seems to be another allusion to the continuous Linking without letting the First Flame properly end implied in DaS3's main-game story. In turn, Londor appears to be acting as more an attempt to take a third option, to repurpose the First Flame to the use of another without actually snuffing it out and bringing on an Age of Dark. In DaS1 the Age of Dark and Age of Man were said to be the same thing, but here the darkness of the First Flame going out seems to be a different thing from the darkness of Londor. In the "Usurp" ending, we're still shown the eclipsed sun over the Kiln, only instead of burning yellow-orange, the fire that surrounds it burns white (similar to the visual effect of blackflame and similar dark pyromancies, which are dark with a white outline). Rather than "dark" as in "the absence of fire" Londor seems to seek an Age of Fire in which a different Lord Soul, the Dark Soul, holds ascendance over the nature of the world, rather than Gwyn's soul. In any case, this seems specifically different than the Age of Dark implied by the Dark Lord ending of DaS1, which merely had the Chosen Undead turn around and walk out of the Kiln without doing anything to the First Flame. Since it seems, again, that this is not the canon DaS1 ending, perhaps this "ignore the fading Flame" ending was insufficient to deliver what Kaathe and his ilk actually sought, and so the "Usurp the Flame" concept was adopted as a kind of refinement on that plan. (One theory I have heard, and which sounds interesting to me, is that Elfriede became an Unkindled because she tried to Usurp the Flame at Kaathe's direction...and failed. We know from Miyazaki that Unkindled are those who try to Link the Flame and fail, so perhaps this same logic applies to attempted usurpation...and which failure might well explain why Friede would depart from Londor, seek refuge in the Painted World, and why she might no longer be attracted to the ethos of Londor.)

DezoPenguin I suppose Ariandel and the Painter Girl work in unison? She paints it, he restores it. And as for DaS2's cycles; they didn't flat out ret-con it, but they didn't pay too much attention to it, either. One interesting way to look at it, if Dark Souls is a "circle" (appropriate, given the original name for the game) Let's say Dark Souls is the "top" of the circle and Dark Souls II is the bottom of the circle - the polar opposite, the point furthest away, that's when almost nothing from DaS1 exists, right? And then DaS3 is near the top again, the circle has almost done a full circuit, and things from DaS1 re-emerge. Not saying that's exactly what is happening, but it's one possible explanation.

@ViperJoe
@ViperJoe 7 жыл бұрын
Knowing From, the "Dark Soul of man" and the "Abyss Dragon" will remain unexplained and the 2nd DLC will likely have absolutely nothing to do with Gael or the painter girl. Not to mention that the DLCs are sold separately, unlike the Old Hunters expansion, so I highly doubt they'll be connected story-wise.

I think the "merciful" goddess can be no other than Velka. And by the way Gael isn't praying to the altar I think, but rather to the statue behind it. Which is likely Velka, too. Added to Ariandel's obsession with repentance (flailing), which Friede took away from him, and his general appearance, that's a lot of thematic connections to Velka's character. The one thing I wonder is whether Suly could be Friede and Ariandel's son. The fact that he holds both fire and dark could fit. Although it's pretty inconsequential I suppose.

One of the fun things about Sulyvahn; he's effectively emulating Gwyndolin's miracles using sorcery and Velka's miracles scale with intelligence. There's the old theory that Gwyndolin "usurped" the Darkmoon Blades from Velka, as they should be her covenant. Maybe Sulyvahn is Velka's son, unintentionally (or intentionally) used as revenge. Almost like with Grendel, haha

I think the goddess is either Priscilla or Caitha. Priscilla because we know she's worshipped by the Corvians, or Caitha because being merciful is her thing and Gael is praying to a statue of a crying woman- she's the goddess of tears.

I’m almost certain that the rot is actually an equivalent to the repeated cycle of rekindling the flame time and time again, slowly rotting the world away. So in a way, the flame in the painting is equivalent to the dark in the real world as it can reset the world and bring a new age or a new painting

I for one believe that it is the same painted world from in dark souls 1, and as the painting grows older and its corruption grows the painting itself changes in shape, thats why the painting girl hast to create a new painting; to replace not repair. Its also possible that its not the same painting at all from ds1 and that each painter just happened to paint Priscilla tower, each painting based off of the last, each changing slightly untill we get what we have in this game.

Dark Souls 1 was my first but i did buy DS2SotFS, my only disappointment with it? No starting Pyromancer class (my favorite from 1), so i take sorcerer so i can magic arrow the Ogres in the forest and boost my dex n str enough to use a short sword, and start building a mage-knight type character but using all 4 types of magic depending on what the bosses are most vulnerable to. Sadly the fume knight got fixed and i cant estus cheese him and he has pretty high magic resistances. Currently my characters is 186 level i believe (maybe as high as 192), and im using a dark infused morning star+10, a drakeblood sword +5 (i think), black witches staff +10 (for sorceries hexes and miracles), pyromancy flame +10, Dragon Parma +?, and maxed out drangleic armor save for my hexers hood. My rings tend to be situational but usually includes the Chloranthy ring for that stamina regen boost.

My theory is that Yorshka is Ocellote, now my reasoning behind this is because Ocellote during the fight with Ocieros is holding nothing there, now before you guys say well he’s probably invisible and you can hear him crying, Ocieros could also be putting a spell and making a baby cry, plus he keeps on asking “where are you Ocellote?” While supposedly holding said child, and even after he supposedly smashed Ocellote, we can still hear a baby cry out, the only time the baby stops crying is when we defeat Ocieros. And as for Ocellote being a male, remember back when it was said that the wife of Ocieros, after Ocellote was born left without a trace, strange that she would leave her baby behind, with a mad man that is most likely blind and has turned himself into a monstrosity. I believe she took Ocellote with her, and gave Ocellote to her brother Gywndolin(I’m fairly certain that the wife of Ocieros is Gywnevere). And in one of the item descriptions as well, Gywndolin gave his “sister” her name as well, Yorshka. Plus also the fact that she is the daughter of Gywn is just bonkers, I mean the guy hated dragons, and even denounced his own son for allying with them too.

I think that when Father Ariandel before the last stage of the fight says "Whe the Ashes are two, a flame alighteth. Thou'rt Ash, and Fire befits thee, of course...", let goes of preserving the painting and lets the winner of the fight, the player or Elfrieda to decide what will happen to the painting because we are both Ashes and we were brought back, after our failed attempt to link the Fire previously and we are the last hope for the flame atleast at this time.

Another topic: in dark souls 1 those who used the dark this way were "manipulated" by kaathe, yuria even tells you that upon her death "kaathe, i failed thee" which suggest the church of londor followed kaathe's "teachings" What is kaathe to the dark that he seems to know about it so much, that everything with it seems to be connected with him. Frieda is one of the founder of the church of londor as we already know but she shares quite some similarities with nashandra from ds2 , don't you think? She used a scythe, the dark AND once you are in the "throne-room" of ariandel, she appears to challenge you. I think it was also her, who manipulated ariandel thus keeping his flail away to let the painting rott. why? I don't really know. Is the rott in this world the same like the dark age is for the world outside of the painting?

Don't forget Rosaria as a possible candidate for who Gael is pleading to. It would make sense since the statue is in the Cleansing Chapel and Rosaria can be found deeper in the Cathedral. She also accepts anyone into her convenient and gives them the ability to start over. Maybe she can even give new forms to those that have lost their own, like the Forlorn. How that would connect her to Ariandel...I dunno.

16:44-17:01 - Here is where I disagree. You express that Friede's philosophy hasn't changed, but it clearly has if you remember what the quote at 01:55 states: "We set the world afire for the sake of the next world" Burning the Painting isn't like Linking the Fire, it is the opposite, it is allowing the Age of Dark, the Age of Humanity to come. As stated in the quote, it is what they do right, unlike the people outside who continue to Link the Fire and prolong the inevitable. So Friede choosing Rot means that she is choosing the Linking of the Flame, now no longer wanting the Age of Dark. So her philosophy clearly has changed, so the question is truly why she fights at all? She abandoned the "Outside-World" instead of Linking the Flame, after all. So why would she wish to "Link the Fire" inside the Painting by keeping onto Rot?
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
Burning the painting seems to be akin to linking the fire - they "burn away" the world, so the next one might be born. I see your point though - you're saying that linking the fire is just prolonging the "existing world" (in that sense) right? I figured it's more like, going with the status quo. In the outside world, the status quo is to link the flame and continue the age of fire (although I think at this point we're in a VERY different age of fire) and in the painting, the status quo is to burn it when it gets weird. Essentially like linking the fire when it starts to fade. But I certainly see your point.
@simenamundsen3166
@simenamundsen3166 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is quite right. The thing here is, Freide tried to attain the original Flame as a agent of Londor. She turned to ash and upon awakening she had different ideas as she saw that Linking, or taking it, it makes no difference. The world is all in a circle. It's two sites, always fighting over the same price, the Flame. In the painted world, they burn the entire world, to start anew, a new world away from the gaze of the flame. They chose neither side, they chose to leave both sides behind and make their own path. Freide is against this however, as she chose to stay with the currently world, which also avoids choosing either path. To chose "Rot" over "Burn" is to take a side, but still a side that is different from "Linking" or "Usurping". They created a new circle, different from the original one, but a circle none-the-less. It is more ironic really. Freide probably wished to protect the people of the painting for a reason she never gave. Burning the painting would mean killing them all, so she refused to do that. She used to fight for the Hollows, the people of Londor and now she fights for the people of the Painted World, the Crovians. The comment; *It is the one thing we do right.* - Means it is something they've done at least once before, though the way he says it implies that he, himself have never done it. Meaning it would be his ancestors. It's like a belief on his side. Regardless to say. Linking the Fire or Usurping it is holding unto what is dearest to you, what you don't want to lose, no matter what. Burning it all way, giving yourself away, all for the sake of the next generation to come. A hollow is doomed to wander, and wander until they've forgotten all of their past. They lose that dearest to them and they go insane. A world without passion or goals, is a hollow one indeed. They *need* to fight for something to avoid that fate, which is either the Linking or Usurping. The Crovians don't need this, and they see it more clearly. Also, regarding "Forlorn". It might actually refer to "Hollows" themselves. As they no longer have a home, they wander, seeking a goal to hold unto, a memory to get to. Thus they find the painted world, home of the Forlorn. Yet, if I remember correctly then we are told that neither Hollow nor Ash belong there.

+Silver Mont I actually think the burning of the painting to make way for to next is a kin to letting the fire flame in the outside world going out. Whereas letting the painting rot is like linking the flame (basically prolonging the current age).

While the painter is very closely related to Priscilla, I think there is more to her. I think there is a relation to firekeepers. Maybe the dragon-person's scales and eyes are covered or removed when they become firekeepers. In DS2 the Emerald Herald is dragon-related as well. While she was not called a firekeeper, I do think there's a sort of relation to it. In DS1 firekeepers were always somehow maimed, and maybe that's why they never knew that they had dragon traits. The fair lady was morphed by the flame so the scales could not be seen, and she retains her ability to be a firekeeper after the whole thing happens. Darkmoon Knightess was made a firekeeper because she was considered maimed after they saw her scales and so on. Or maybe when she was a child her scales were removed and she retained the ability to be a firekeeper. DS1's Firelink Shrine Firekeeperhad her ankles maimed because they tried to remove her scales, but in a primitive manner at a later stage (not quite sure about this one). (The issue I have then, is that clearly Irina of carim is not a dragon or anything, so that kinda brings the whole theory to a halt, but who knows. Maybe she's a cross-breed and was an experiment, or maybe origin of firekeepers is a dragon-person?) The Painter is supposed to see flame. And uncle Gael asks that we show her flame, so in a way WE are the pigment that she needs to finish the painting. Vaati iirc says in one of his vids that it is clear that there's a connection to between Gael and Carim. And the connection could be the process of creating firekeepers. Gael is trying to somehow usher in the age of fire in this world, the world depicting lost/forlorn people being ushered into the age of fire (Churches always did comission art to depict their ideologies throughout history).

Ariandel's blood satiates the flame. You can hear him whipping himself as you enter the chappel. Ariandel wants the flail because our presence before him is causing the flame to become excited, so he wants to quell the flame with his blood.

Concerning the effigy, the best theory I have found is the following: the head of the effigy seems to be derived from the headless statue outside of the boss-room, which, presumably, depicts Velka, the patron of the Painted World. As Friede is Ashen, she has prominent burns marking her face that would differentiate her own appearance from the statue. I bring this up because I believe that Friede's goal was, in her own way, to take the form of Velka, emulating her and adopting her guise for the purpose embodying the goddess of the Painted World. This seems to be supported by the fact that her room is filled with paintings of her face, perhaps to impose some degree of emphasis on her own visage over that of Velka. Subsequently, I think the head was placed upon the statue in the lower chamber as a means of reverence, covering it in a sort of burial shroud so as to consolidate the fact that she had been replaced.

I still think there's a connection to be made between what is happening to the painting and what is happening to the outside world. That is, they're both literally rotting away. All of the painting exists on just a small scrap pf canvas, in the same way that all of the outside world exists on a smaller piece of earth -- that's why all lands seem to be converging in Lothric. It's literally the "fabric" of the world disintegrating. And while we're drawing connections (the DLC's primary function seems to be in providing analogs for what's happening in the outside world), I think Friede becomes Gwyn's analog. I wonder if Friede knew that she was inadvertently becoming like Gwyn? Maybe there's a connection to be made there, too. Maybe Gwyn wasn't afraid of the dark -- he was afraid of what would happen to his people when the flame was extinguished. Which makes sense, right? We know for a fact Friede wants two things: one, to protect the creatures of the painting, which we know from the item description; and two, to stop you from bringing fire to the painting. We can only assume those are connected, right? The last one is the painter and firekeeper, who are both capable of creating new worlds.

Hello again Alex, I have another theory I would like to share with you concerning the world the young girl is painting (I will refer to her as Aria), the painted world itself, the prophecy of the deep, and how that ties in to the fate of the dark souls universe. Aria is painting a new world and she needs THE Dark Soul to complete it. Therefore the Dark Soul must be gathered in some manner and delivered to her (her "uncle's" presumed duty). The Painted World is a place where unwanted things go to or are deliberately put. The Dark Soul is unwanted by the Lords and a risk to the Age of Fire, therefore the Dark Soul is the ideal candidate to be put in the Painted World, which is exactly what Aria is trying to do... whether she's aware of it or not. Removing the Dark Soul is one of two things that must be removed in order for the world to return as it was before the Age of Fire. The second thing that must be removed is the Flame itself (ill get to that later). Inception Warning!: The Painted World BURNS away the Rot, just like the Real World "illuminates" the dark. If this is indeed true, the Dark Soul could be placed within the New Painting which currently resides within the current Painted World. Then the current Painted World is cleansed of the Rot via its own destruction, then the completed Painting containing the Dark Soul would be destroyed as well, thus removing the Dark Soul from existence... unless the painting is removed (Londor's involvement maybe?). Lady Elfriede is preventing The Painted World's FLAME from growing, thus preventing Aria from seeing ONE OF THE TWO FLAMES necessary for what I assume to be the end of disparity created by the First Flame. Her history as one of those Londor Ladies shows her motive to prevent Aria from completing the New Painting. The player kills Elfriede, thus her actions have been stopped (will someone fill her spot?). Assuming all goes according to plan, Aria sees Flame #1 in the Painted World, she must then see Flame #2 in the Real World when the Player links the Flame. She will complete the New Painting and the Dark is removed forever, as is the Painted World. The Prophecy of the Deep speaks of a world covered in water (IIRC) and Sulyvahn came from the Painted World so he could be in on this entire plan... so to speak. This flooded world would, presumably, extinguish the First Flame ending the Age of FIre. The Dark Soul, the problem of the Abyss, and the so-called Age of Dark/Man/Undead/etc. is gone. The Lord Souls, the First Flame, and the Age of Fire are gone too. Therefore, the world can return to it's original state, a timeless world without disparity. Assuming I'm correct and my logic isn't flawed, then what a great fucking ending to a series! Although, future DLC is sure to throw a spanner in the works of my whole theory. Gotta love Dark Souls... Thanks if you read this Alex, it means a lot.
@Nero-ho6gt
@Nero-ho6gt 7 жыл бұрын
Edit: I just remembered the dialogue of an inhabitant of the Painted World (cant remember who) says: "(Something about burning the world)...It's the only thing we do right, unlike those on the outside. (Or something similar)" Maybe the plan of removing the Dark Soul is the Painting's denizen's way of fixing what the First Flame and the Lord Souls messed up. Maybe ALL characters in the series are subconsciously working towards fixing what is broken in some kind of course-correcting force of the universe except those that can resist it (bearers of the four souls). Maybe, maybe not... Who knows?
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
That's a neat theory, kinda reminds me of the old DaS1 concept where Priscilla was going to be the level up lady - I assumed during that version, the game would start in the Painted World, with our character "locked away" there, for precisely the reason you mention; our character being the one who would become the Dark Lord and wield the Dark Soul, so Gwyn wipes our memory and sticks us in there. Then something happens, we escape along with Priscilla (who has the power needed to kill gods) and the game happens. Could go along with the idea that Velka believes the other gods need to be punished, that's why the Chosen Undead is released.

Have you noted the draconian feature of the painter girl? I am not sure if she has any, but I was told she has scaly skin on her face. That also explains why she is covered by a very long robe and is never seen standing up, because the robe might very well be hiding a tail. Lending credence to her being Priscilla's daughter. Or maybe she has some illness that prevents her from standing up?

@corentindereure72

But then who are all these "Dragon-featured ladies" ? That would make three of them : Priscilla, Yorshka and the Painting girl. All of them have dragon features and all of them are connected to the painted worlds (for Yorshka remember we find a painted guard body inside her church, and she seems to be in a place close to where the painted world of Ariamis was). We know that the painted world of Ariamis was some sort of a "trash bin", where everything the gods didn't want in the world would be put, like the items linked to Velka, the dark ember, and of course Priscilla herself. But then in DS 3 we encounter both these ladies that ressemble Priscilla and that seem linked to the painted worlds. So what then ? Did Seath create more than one crossbreed, and then scattered them in painted worlds ? Or is Priscilla their mother, to both of them (or at least their ancestor), and learned them only to live in painted worlds ? I find the second possibility more likely, but it's only my opinion.

True, but we know her origins (or what is very highly implied by DS2). Could Yorshka and the painting girl also be results of Aldia's experiments ? I doubt that, because nothing else would link them to him, while their connexion to the painted worlds and to Priscilla seems more obvious. Or maybe Priscilla was also created by Aldia and not Seath (or both, because why not after all, two mad scientists facinated by dragons could team up), but this would have some very deep implications, and I'm just wildly speculating at that point. I seriously don't think it is the case, but it might be a possibility.

Indeed. It struck me while watching the video that the DS2 painting may have some more significance than a world clue about Nashandra's true self, albeit probably unintentional. Considering that Aldia's keep has a lot of paintings, the Painted Guardian Phantom and Aldia's thirst for immortality he would of course have studied the painted world(s). Could Aldia have commissioned the painting with foresight of who and what Nashandra was prior to being banished to his keep? Was it something he sent over after his banishment? Was he even involved in the paintings creation at all? I love Dark Souls 2 always getting in the mix with lore.

Hey Silver. I think Elfriede's "black flame" is simply her Humanity. The description of Black Flame does say it's the "impenetrable fire of Humanity". Additionally Yuria will recognise her sister's scent on you and say that she has lost that same scent. Yuria is Hollow, so she's lost her Humanity. I think Elfriede held onto her Humanity, unlike her sisters, and now has a huge amount of it inside her, manifesting as a raging black flame.

I'd assume she took things at a rather surface level. Fire in the real world = bad, ergo fire here also = bad. The problem with that mentality though, was, the fire in the real world was bad because it prolonged an age that had already reached the end. It dragged on its existence in a painful cycle, the same way not burning the painting dragged on its painful, rotting existence. By choosing the rot, she inadvertantly sided with Frampt, even though she and her sisters had sworn loyalty to Kaathe. This is why she's not held in as high regard as one would expect by Yuria. Not only did Fride abandon the real world and her sisters for the painting, she also chose the very thing she had sworn against.

Fair point, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what makes her "crossbreed" like Priscilla and Yorshka. The firekeeper is the only human I know of with that long white hair and paleskin who also seems to be linked to fire and painting worlds. Seems like it could make her "ken to fire" if she truly was the daughter of a firekeeper. I could see that connection having heavy repercussions for characters like Oceiros who were consumed with the idea of breeding those "ken to fire" with dragons. The offspring could conceivably create a new world. That's the right kind of power to bother being consumed by.

In the first game, the Corvians of the painted world were followers of Velka, IIRC. Something about being twisted by her/their worship of her. In DaS3, the Forlorn and Millwood Knights "found" the painting, whereas the Corvians might be natural to it. And I assume there are cities/towns of normal people, as Carim + Catarina still seem to exist in some form. They just banish Undead as soon as they pop up. And Londor itself is obviously a country/city of Undead.

But in Londor ending ashen one "usurps" the flame, with skies changing color and stuff. It's not the dark age, like with the eyes of firekeeper ending, where you can run around in pitch black (great image btw, unfortunately this endings is spoiled by the possibility to play after that, with same old light, without going to NG+). Also initially i thought that killing the firekeeper will turn into different dark ending, but it's more like another "usurping of the flame", just not for Londor in this case "cos ashes always seeks the flame" or something.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why they would be so different, from a story perspective; the flame is either "gone" waiting to be rekindled, or taken by the Ashen One/Lord of Hollows. I suppose in that sense it would still exist, it would just be burning low within them. I'll be very interested to see what the second DLC introduces, on that note.
@rlyehtenant5651
@rlyehtenant5651 7 жыл бұрын
It's a speculation, but in "usurping" endings flame may have a chance to spread from Ashen One/Lord of Hollows, like humanity did from pygmy (not intentionally tho). It doesn't feel like it's going to fade like that any time soon. Part of the Lord Soul was kept inside Four Kings in the abyss for a 1000 years (according to Frampt), and flame feeds on it's own parts, including humanity. As the time goes, there's just gets more fuel for it. I like how DaveControl made a plot connection between DS and Kingsfield, about if i recall, four elements, balance and overflowing of light and darkness in both series. Don't remember the video, but it made much more sense than Vaati's forcing of the "dark normality".

In my opinion Friede thinks that it is better to live a miserable life than to die. I´m starting to think that when you burn the painting the inhabitants die as well, hence why she wants to avoid the burning of the painting. However, by doing this she is allowing the rot to take over. It is as if you chose to NOT unplug the life support of a dying man and let him live a few more days as he suffers great pain and agony. It is honestly a hard choice for some people, specially since the inhabitants are all forlon.

1:10 that the cycle-thing is similar is obvious, but I disagree with how the cycle works. I am still not convinced by the "Age of Darkness" being an actual "Age of Man" or something like that. The only characters who ever described it that way are all connected to Kaathe. I still don't see why the Dark Soul should be an exception to the fading process. It is just another Lord Soul. 3:50 I doubt that the Forlorns are the same from Dark Souls 2. The Forlorns have been very uniform in Dark Souls 2, while the Forlorns here are just random people/groups, some of which aren't even fighters. 5:50 I think the "goddess of the Forlorn", speaking of the Dark Souls 3 Forlorn, has to be Priscilla. The whole Painted World of Ariamis seemed to have built itself as protection for her and since the painter girl resembles her and has the ability to create new Painted Worlds, it is very likely that Priscilla has taken the role of the "goddess of the Forlorn". Velka might also be a possibility, since she was also already connected to the Painted World of Ariamis. Oh and let's not forget, that Priscilla is not a creature that has her origin in the painting. Her father was most likely Seath, after all. 12:10 I don't think that Friede just "decieved" Ariandel. To me it seems much more likely, that Friede locked Ariandel up and tortured him until his mind broke. Why else would Ariandel be strapped onto that chair and hidden in a secret room? 13:30 Something that is yet unanswered: Who says that? Doesn't sound like Ariandel, at least not in the same way how he's been screaming and how he sounded during the cutscene. It sounds sort of "onmipresent". Maybe it is a rememberence, a quote from Ariandel that is embedded in the painting or something like that. 16:25 editing error 17:25 In general I think that the Sable Church's goals are off. Friede's decision to go against burning the painting resembles that. They believe in Kaathe, who has decieved both the Four Kings and the mages of Oolacile, only spreading the abyss, death and suffering among humans. No good is gonna come from him or his methods. Of course, continously making people sacrifice themselves for kindling is not a proper solution either. The only 2 people, who have been looking for a permanent solution were Aldia and Vendrick, but we got nothing further from those yet, since FromSoftware only gave us the open Scholar of the First Sin ending and has abandonned the Dark Souls 2 main plot thus far. *grammar

The Forlorn thing is open ended, although I choose to believe it's the same as DaS2. They look different, yeah - but I figured the "invisible hollows" in DaS2 were the Forlorn; the form they took upon invading was just a naturalised form. Also fun to note they use scythes when invading, sometimes. But the main reasons were - they share the name "Forlorn" (capitalised) and both have "lost their world" and drift between worlds/dimensions. Painted World is the perfect place for them to finally belong, once again. That wasn't an editing error near the end, I dunno what happened, but it seems the video messed up during rendering. I watched the full video before rendering, but I tend to just skip through after rendering - this time I must've missed it.

Huh, never thought to look at the doll like that... makes some sense considering by that point, if it IS a depiction of Priscilla, then through the time difference and the many times the painting may had to be sat ablaze; people may no longer know what Priscilla looked like, other than odd and unique features. Like having a tail like that of a snake and having almost fur-like robes. And on the topic of the Painter, could it be possible that painters in that world are treated in the rules of that world, as gods? I mean, that world is just a painting with some sort of magic... or divine "things" that make it like it is.... That, or the little Painter is special, being able to see the truth once she paints something. This maybe the reason why she is qualified to paint the next world. And why the paintings of Alfrede consume her in flames. But I don't know.

I suppose she is a god-like figure in some aspects, one being that she can't die - the other being that she is able to "create"

I mean, if the man that shares the name of this version of the Painted world, didn't die from the your fight. This could have been the reason? But he did vanish like most bosses... so... we see, and hear, what we want I guess.

I'm pretty sure forlorn is being used as an adjective, someone with no purpose, pitiful, sad, lonely aka without a home. And Yorshka isn't a goddess, the only two REAL gods, not self proclaimed gods like Gwyn exist, Velka (who happens to be the mother of forlorn in DS1 painted world) and Caitha (I don't think caitha is related, her statues are all over the cathedral but they created by the Way of White, before the saints of the deep took over).
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
Forlorn is capitalised, which is one reason I got to thinking about that. And well, Yorshka certainly isn't a very good god, if she is considered one at all, but she does have a church (granted, that could just make her more of a saint. In general I meant a sort of religious/divine figure and just rolled with god 'cos apparently everyone can be a god in Dark Souls if they got a big enough soul lol)

Can it be that Ariandel dont give a soul, because his soul IS The painting, and The body we slay is just a husk we free Ariandel from?
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
As in, he used his soul to form the basis of the painting? That could be interesting. It's actually a little like some (very out there) speculation I made in an upcoming video talking about the Old One from Demon's Souls becoming the Archtrees of DaS haha. You know how people like saying the Demon's Souls / Dark Souls / Bloodborne worlds are all the same? I don't personally think they are, but I thought it could make a fun topic for a video, speculating on such.

I strongly feel like she's the lost child, Ocelotte. She has half-dragon like qualities, which would make sense if her father was King Oceiros. She also greatly resembles the pale, sickly skin tone of Lorian and Lothrick (the flesh of Irythyl) So her mother must then be DUN DUN DUN... The Queen of Drangleic. I bet you my Dark Silver set.
@SilverMont

That seems like a good idea, other than Ocelotte being male - that would put a bit of a crimp on it. Unless they did some crazy gender bender stuff

Garl Vinland Off the top of my head, I believe Oceiros says like "You can't have him, m8" And I think maybe there's an item description somewhere, too?

That's right, he does say "he" in the cutscene. I don't remember a gender specific noun in an item description. Well damn, I hope Ocelotte is a thing, it seems odd that they'd just make new characters in the DLC with zero connection to the main plot, but then again, this is Fromsoftware.

Garl Vinland There was some weird art a while back that people thought was related to that - it was like "Queen Juniper" being controlled by some gross baby which was probably Ocelotte. i.imgur.com/REiBIla.png I think it was just a scrapped concept or a fake someone made, I'm not sure. There's a chance that will be in the next DLC, but I feel like they wouldn't have released a concept they were actually going to use. Either way, I think that would've been a cool boss.

WheediesManchild I think he originally wanted to rekindle the flame, and still does to an extent, but he's now going along with Elfriede's plan to let the painting rot.
