I came up with a theory a while back that Navlaan is the old inhabitant of the Majula mansion. For a start, when Navlaan's dark practises were discovered, his entire village got executed. None of Majula's original inhabitants (except maybe Shalquoir) are still living there. There's also the library filled with books, a typical trope of sorcerors. Lastly, there's the skeleton in the basement. Navlaan was a necromancer. And, of course, Cale touched Navlaan. That's how he got the key to the house. I do not believe that Navlaan is Aldia. I believe that he was not actually executed (that was just a cover story). He was taken to Aldia's keep to work for Aldia. I don't know if Navlaan got his alter ego while he was in Majula or while he worked with Aldia though.

I think I even heard of a theory about Navlaan being Alva the Wayfarer. The theory is pretty long, but if I am to sum up the important details it goes something like this; Alva the Wayfarer was trying to save his beloved Serreta from her sickness, but he failed and Serreta passed away. Because of this, Alva who once had an unwavering faith, lost trust in his gods and started learning sorcery and hexes from the beautiful Black Witch Zullie, who was once an adversary trying to ruin Alva by seducing him, but later became a faithful supporter to him (maybe even becoming a new lover). With their combined effort and knowledge of sorcery and hexes, Alva created the hex Scraps of Life to unleash Serreta's soul and meet her once again, but the hex did not work as intended. Because of the act of casting the esoteric spell, Alva and Zullie, along side the towns folks who either supported or witnessed the ritual were executed . However the tale doesn't end there, as Alva alone survived because he just happend to be a hollow. After losing two woman that he loved, Alva became even bitter to the world, but he did not give up. He renamed himself as Navlaan (reversed, it becomes Na ALVA N), and used his knowledge of sorcery and hexes to join the court of Drangleic. He became the royal sorcerer and worked with the King's brother Aldia so he can continue his research of the art of resurrection, and this time resurrect his beloved. This last hopeless and reckless attempt unfortunately failed yet again, and it back-fired, splitting his soul into two, creating two different sides of himself; one being the once noble knight Alva who wishes imprison himself forever from the outside world, and the other being the bitter and hateful sorcerer Navlaan who now uses his vast knowledge of sorcery and hexes to spread death and agony, for he thinks it is the only act that the gods had allowed him, just like how he has done all along. I found this theory rather interesting because it curiously ties two characters that don't seem related at all, explains why Navlaan sells Zullie's Black Witch set, and what his hexes' true purpose might have been. Hopefully the Scholar of the First Sin will give extra hints from the new updated item descriptions and NPCs.

Navlaan reminds me of Kaathe. And his quest for immortality reminds me very much of the Art of Lifedrain. Could be nothing, but if everything cycles over and over again, I could see something from the Primordial dark coming back to influence a human looking for power.

Silver Mont You are absolutely right, Silver! They corrected three descriptions in Scholar of the First Sin: the Chaos Rapier, the Chaos Shield and the Chaos Hood. The first two erase the problem you pointed out at around 8:15. They read the same, as follows: "Once, a brilliant young sorcerer cast away his earthly desires, devoting himself entirely to the Dark that bewitched him. Nebulous, inky and serene, the Dark holds an allure matched only by the fear it strikes in men's hearts. Could it be nature, holding a mirror to mankind?" They removed the doubts/mysticism around the tale and they removed the name of Navlaan, implying that the Royal Sorcerer is NOT Navlaan. The Chaos Hood, to me, gives a small hint as to what this Nadalianesque idol was: "Hood worn by a chaos sorcerer. The man claims to have sealed himself away, but who's ever heard of sentient magic? It is no doubt difficult to judge the veracity of the man's words, but his hood definitely seems to possess an unusual power." Maybe this "ashen idol" was the chaos hood itself? The "sprinkles of blood" could represent the outfit he was wearing upon his execution? I think we have enough evidence to say that the hexer Naavlan was executed as a heretic, a necromancer who tried to restore the banned art of resurrection. Somewhere around the same time, a promising Royal Sorcerer, failing to obtain power through "traditional" means, became enticed with the the dark, maybe because the dark was inside him all along, and an experiment merely brought it forth, but nonetheless, Navlaan was ressurected in spirit, semi-occupying the Royal Sorcerer's body. Naavlan wanted to fully control the body and tortured the Sorcerer through murder and through power demonstrations, in hopes that the Sorcerer would stop resisting and surrender to the dark strength he yearned, so that so they could become one: Naavlan, The Hexer. Desperate, the Royal Sorcerer locked himself away and warned everybody, when he found out what Navlaan had been doing in his sleep. Bearing this regret, he remains locked till this day.

When I got the mission to murder the Emerald Herald, I got pissed, opened the door, and killed Navlaan instead. It would have been funny though if his death dialogue would've been "Was it something I said?"

I think Navlaan IS Aldia. Or at least was. I'm almost certain the theory that the Ancient Dragon is Aldia is wrong, I think Aldia fused a giant's soul with a petrified dragon egg in an attempt to bring life to the egg to birth an everlasting dragon, but because it was a giant's soul, it was imperfect. I think Aldia's experiments went wrong and he was fused with Navlaan, and in order to protect others, Aldia sealed himself inside his own keep in order to keep Navlaan locked up. This could explain the monsters "Aldia" created, that Navlaan was actually the one dictating the experiments that created them. This could explain why there is a unique blue fog wall that's seen nowhere else in the game, that it was conjured by a unique sorcery created by Aldia.

Silver Mont To me it just doesn't make sense for the game to let you find a petrified dragon egg, and the AD to drop a giant's soul if the AD is Aldia. You'd think it'd drop a more unique soul, like how Old Dragonslayer has a unique soul, even though he never had a proper lord soul.

I have to agree with what you were saying about Navlaan n the Royal Sorcerer being different people. Due to the fact that Navlaan never refers to his body as "My body" or "This body of mine" but only ever as "Vessel" meaning it's something he has possessed. Now on the account of the armor set, this can be explained by the fact that Navlaan is obviously a murderer or assassin and people would begin calling the Royal Sorcerer for Navlaan even when the Royal Sorcerer was in control. Meaning this unknown chaos sorcerer could of taken on the name Navlaan cause well that's what people would call him anyway. In terms of his thirst this can be simple explained as thirst for adrenaline, he thrives and thirsts for the adrenaline involved in a killing. Which is why he continues to attack us, fighting us gives him this thrill, this adrenaline. But I feel that the reason he gained this thirst is the same as serial killers, the rush of adrenaline involved with the killing, the taking of someones life. The power over life and death, holding the fate of his victims in his hand became like a drug for him, and by having us kill for him. He gets a tiny bit of this drug, the power of holding someones life by his hand. Not the same as killing someone himself but it works for a bit.

I liked the idea of Navlaan being a catalyst. I never picked up on him casting without one, though the only time I released him was during my first playthrough of the game back when it first came out. I also think it's a really cool theory that Navlaan perfected resurrected and was exiled for it because that's a nice roundabout way of explaining how he came to share a body with the Royal Sorcerer. I always found it a little weird that he just sort of "came about" through experimentation. I've gotta say I'm very much enjoying this channel, you speculate without it seeming to be pulled out of your ass and you don't really super heavily on item descriptions i.e. telling us what we could already glean from just playing the game. And you take the time to respond to comments quite frequently. Definitely worth my subscription.

falx94 The new item descriptions that came with Scholar of the First Sin seem to help support this theory too - it did away with the one problem I mentioned with the theory (the chaos rapier description) and assuming Navlaan still doesn't use a catalyst, that wouldn't hurt my other theory! Although I've not seen if he does or not yet, but apparently they did fix a few things like that (supposedly Felkin now uses his intended weapon)

What do you mean we do not know what they were trying to do in Aldia's Keep? Their main goal was to bring about the Age of Dragons once more, which is why the area has the large skeleton of the Dragon which temporarily reanimates an attempts to attack the player and why the areas boss is a Wyvern, and leads to Dragon's Peak Aerie which is full of dozens and dozens of Wyverns, as well as the only succesful dragon they really created, the Ancient Dragon which gives you the Ashen Mist Heart, the Muse was also born here as she is atleast partly infused with Dragon blood.

I think they were trying to work with resurrection in aldias keep. reason why that is because the ancient dragon soul can be acquired using the Ashen mist heart. also you get a giants soul instead of the ADS. also where would you get the body to resurrect it? well theres a stone dragon where we kill the big NOPE and its safe to assume that was once a dragon, not a statue. also some fantasies have it where spiders can kill dragons, trapping them. Dragons were known to live in the area ash lake. so take that the first part of the game looks like ash lake but closer to the surface. could they have ventured further in and found the ancient dragons corpse? if so they brought it back to life. now they have a Half dead dragon that cant really move and plays a false god. during the Resurrection of the Ancient dragon maybe Navlaan found a person who was perfect for him during that crucial moment and invaded his soul. making 2 into 1.

The Resonant Hexes consumes souls on cast. Could the Resonant thirst for souls be the source of Navlaans thirst for killing?

Also, I think the reason he has such an urge to kill is because he might be trying to seek vengeance upon all of humanity for killing him and his village. Maybe we should take into account that Navlaan sought to resurrect the dead for reasons other than selfishly preserving his own life? Perhaps someone dear to him had died, and when he sought to bring them back from the grave, his efforts were halted in the execution of his village.

i believe the object becomes then known as a phylactery or in the case of harry potter a horcrux, turns the caster into a lich essientially making them unkillable. the only way to deal with a lich is to destroy the item then kill it

Strange eerily malformed creatures.. The forlorn could be part of that group. And well the skin color of navlaan/royal sorcerer could mean that he's a fenito as fenitos are linked with the dark, and what better place is there for a spirit to rise from than a crypt/catacombs.

it says navlaan sealed himself away because by the time the sorcerer realised what was happening he WAS navlaan at least partly. the item descrip is referring to the sorcerer post "invasion" not necessarily implying that it was the evil persona that chose to be locked up, but rather referring to both entites as navlaan.

I know this is a old video.....but watching this I have a epiphany....can the royal sorcer be eygil? My toughts: 1) he isa chaos sorcerer and give us one of the most powerful Pyro in the game..also Eygil is called a magus, but only Pyro we know of him...so maybe eygil is a fire\chaos sorcerer (I have to thanks a reddit post for this connection)2) in the description is mention "how could be possible That a sorcery can have a will on its own?" and in a Pyro made by eigyl is explicitly stated that he wanted to grant fire a will on his own and that he made experiments in that way; 3) is a royal sorcerer so he used to work for a king, but I can't remember that Vendrick had a group of magus that work for him.... The Iron King instead have a lot of sorcerers, magician and astrologers that work for him, so the king in question may be the OIK (if a remember well the astro set itself is sold by navlaan in Softs, and you can find astro only in the Iron passage ).... I know that those are all speculations, but those hints made me explicitly think at Eygil.... What do you think? (sorry for my English I'm not native... Hi from Italy)

I don't know if the first two targets are really all that important. While Cale did allegedly somehow touch Navlaan, I'd lean more towards them either being tests to see if we're determined enough to take on Felkin, or maybe he just dislikes foreigners? As for Felkin, I suspect he sees other magic users as rivals, or possibly that he's jealous of them, seeing they can practice their arts freely while he's locked away. Perhaps the armor sets he sells are from other hexers that he's had "assassinated"? It's entirely possible that we are not the first undead to perform services for him, after all. His blue skin? Well, that's hard to say. I don't see him being a Fenito, mainly because his body size seems more of a human than someone like Agdayne, who is noticeable a fair bit taller than us. It could just be a way to show that his body is technically already dead, but kept "alive" by his possession. He seems to have been locked in there for an awfully long time, after all. If the "original" Navlaan was indeed executed in his home village, I like to think that a pretty good person for the king (of whichever court he served, not necessarily Vendrick) to send to carry out that task would be the Royal Sorcerer, as they were dealing with another powerful magic user. If that was the case, it would have presented a perfect opportunity for Navlaan to use whatever hexes he had come up with, as well as a chance for the Royal Sorcerer to try out his own experimental hexes. I find it very entertaining to think that the combination of their unusual magics had some unintended effects, and that this caused Navlaan's soul to be sealed into his killer, rather than simply dying. Perhaps the Royal Sorcerer had some kind of hex that would allow him to absorb the powers of another, while Navlaan had his resurrection arts (Denial, anyone?) which allowed his soul to survive such a process. This could also explain how he was created by mere chance, I suppose. Speculation is so much fun, isn't it?

There's not too much to go on! Titanite is a rare material "not found outside of Lordran" - the domain of the gods and there's a legendary blacksmith god. Presumably it's just a very impressive metal-like thing which takes on many different properties. Perhaps if you expose it to fire magic, it becomes imbued with fire and then can be worked into a normal blade, for example

In the descriptions of the stones McDuff uses to imbue is says "Sorcerers at the Melfian Magic Academy once attempted to imbue titanite with various elements, but are said to have failed. Someone must have succeeded though; what else would explain this stone?"

Maybe in dark souls 3,there will be a new type of spell (necromancy perphaps),since "original" Navlaan was trying to ressurect the art of ressurection,and Royal Sorcerer was invited by Alva and was united with Navlaan by experimentantion,or he created Navlaan in his head.perphaps Navlaan Is a product of Royal Sorcerer's mind,the experiment have created another mind in his body that is a part of the old Navlaan,this would explain the unique hexes that he haves and he nameing himself Navlaan but keeping the "Royal Sorcerer" title of his vessel. Also he may be blue because of the barrier,the spell used to lock his seems to be from a certain mechanis (since you need to deactivate an lever to open the barrier) and this barrier made the person's skin blue as a side-effect of staying to close to it in a large ammount of time. Also i agreed with Navlaan in some point. He said that he was using what gods gave him.Reffering to free-will.And that is correct,he haves the liberty to do whatever he wished to,every being has,but have to face the consequences,that he seems to don't caring about it because he is powerfull enough to kill all of those in his way,with only his vessel restricting him,but failed when he could made you kill in his behalf. The vessel even says to don't listen to him,knowing that he could make you done his "work". Alotugh when you finish his quest line he shows to be very pleasent and happy saying that "you've been good to me",taking you as a possible friend,but when the barrier drops he became "thisrty" again and tries to kill you,even if you alredy helped him,showing that he trully is a sociopath,maipulating you yo believe that he is alredy satisfied and can be in peace,that would made you to believe it so and to possivle realease him,inlcusing he sells armot and many more stuff to make we thing he is good.At the end is all part of his plan.

So I cant believe I only discovered this today but it turns out there was well done dub voice over for some Dark Souls comics in a series called Lordran and Beyond in which there is actually an established relationship between Creighton and Navlaan in which Navlaan the darker murderous alter ego has been sending Creighton to murder his Marks much like he asks of us to do when we meet him, however in this comic there is a switch that happens where sometimes its the good side of Nav who tells creighton "no why are you doing this you're only encouraging him, stop this, etc." and Creighton doesn't care as he asks for Dark Nav, who changes when Good Nav walks off screen and switches "Persona", and tells him he has one more mark for him but he has to switch the lever down the hall, Creighton does so but first looks at all the messages saying "Dont do it" "Turn Back" "Dont you dare" much like the messages we receive in game ourselves before meeting Navlaan and seeing all those messages warning us about releasing him from his cage, and releases him, he then sees Navlaan cowering and goes to kill him but is quickly defeated using magic, then takes his own axe and murders him, good Navlaan comes into control for a moment saying "why?" and crying over the dead body, but Navlaan reassures him that he's helped him enough in hiding away and this what he wants to do now and that its more than fair So that gives more insight as it seems theres two "Personas" in control of the body and let us hope it is never Navlaan

I think Navlaan had something to do with the pursuers, since the pursuers have Hexes, and Navlaan is called "Royal Sorcerer Navlaan" Which means he probably worked for a king (Maybe of the kingdom Alken, which is where the pursuers come from). He made a murderous thing that possessed his body, maybe that is what he did to the pursuers as well in order to have them hunt undead.

Perhaps he found another sorcerer perfection this and during the attempt to stop him activated a spell that when he died gave him his own curse to deal with much like our characters? Maybe he too will hollow if he does not kill, or perhaps fade. The Royal sorcerer might have stumbled upon the same spell used on Navlaan and Navlaan was summoned into the sorcerer. Do you think that the translation was incorrect when it says "How could a sorcery have a will of its own?" The game is known for having a few mistakes, if this is a mistake, it could have read something like "How could the sorcerer have a will of his own?" While this wouldn't contest the theory of Navlaan being a seperate being, it could change things. I mean to say that maybe it was intended to inquire as to how Navlaan could have a will of his own, independent of his vessel.

i don't really see how that makes sense. the sentence "how could the sorcerer have a will of his own" sounds very.... flawed. to start, its easy for 2 seperate personalities to live in one body. it happens more often than anyone would like, i'm sure. to say that its hard for the second to have a will of his own is really quite a flawed statement. if you've ever seen fight club, its something like that. but "how can a sorcery have a will of its own" is much harder to answer. in-game, sorceries work in a very systematic way. incantation, energy, conduit, and form. all simple things that don't much need a will, or any will at all for that matter. but if a sorcery had somehow gained a will of its own, what would that mean? what would it imply? how could a sorcery that is simply energy being released have a will separate from the casters? the caster uses his knowledge to guide a sorcery, giving it the aforementioned "Form". a conduit (or catalyst) allows it to happen without much harm to the users body. but this particular sorcery ignores both of those. both taking over the casters body (and presumably harming at least the mental state of the user) as well as not even needing a catalyst. on top of this it forced a "Seperate will" into the royal sorcerers body, something previously un-heard of. on top of this the "Seperate will" only appears to those visibly afflicted by the curse of the undead, but this is an odd thing. if it reacts to the curse it would react to the curse itself, and not your state at any one time. but instead it takes YOU into account, rather than your curse. in all likelyhood, it takes into account your weakness, rather than your curse. a hollow is "Weak" and "manipulate-able". but how would a sorcery know this? if it just looked for the curse, technically we always have it. we'd always see navlaan. but in this case, its not like that. its only when we are visibly "weak" that navlaan shows up. this implies that the "seperate will" knows what weakness is, how people work, how peoples MINDS work. for a sorcery to be capable of causing this is nearly impossible with what we know of the arts. there are sorceries that cause minor hallucinogenic effects or some other minor trickery, i believe, but those work on a much simpler level. they simply alter the information you sense. changes that information to trick you. but navlaan doesn't change the information, he straight up tells you exactly what to do. he appeals not to your senses, but to YOU. to your weakness, precisely. ------------------- everything above this is pure speculation ---------------------------------- putting it as simply as possible, its entirely likely that the "Seperate will" is another beings soul which was then put into the royal sorcerers body, causing the "dr. jeckyll and mr. hyde" phenomenon.

Very nice... I, however, have another theory. I think he is a living hex. All dark magicks have an emotion that is attributed to them... With enough bizarre experimentation, I believe even a hex can develop its own will; a will that overtook the royal sorcerer. This would also explain why he only speaks to Hollows, because he is the Dark, and Hollows are the true form of humanity. This also works to illustrate the point that is also given by the existence of the different Queens towards the players.

Who's to say Navlaan even knew about Straid or his existance depending on how old either character is. If Navlaan is "younger" then Straid it could be explained by the fact Straid was locked away and that "humans" have a limited lifespan so he eventually died and only legends remain about Straid. Other side is that Navlaan is older then Straid and well never knew of him to begin with. matiolinomatteino I will agree with what you said in terms of power. On the other hand power isn't everything, Straid doesn't appear to me as the strongest sorcerer ever known but more as the smartest sorcrerer ever known. Why? Well he invented Lingering flame which is basically begging to be used in a clever way. So while Navlaan is stronger overall, I think Straid would beat him any day game-wise, Lore-wise or just for the hell of it. Just by being smarter then Navlaan and utilising his magic smarter.

I agree with the idea that Navlaan is what's left of Aldia. Judging by Aldia's experiments, he believed that the best way to avert the Undead Curse, a curse that plagues humanity, was to leave humanity behind. Thus he experimented with the remains and souls of immortal beings like the Giants and the Dragons...and maybe the Fenito like Agadyne. Note that Navlaan looks exactly like a Fenito. Maybe Aldia tried to turn himself into a Fenito or tried to possess one, only for the process to go horribly wrong. In the end, Aldia got what he wanted -- immortality -- but now he has to spend an eternity with a madman in his head.

I think Navlaan's soul was powerful enough to influence others around him, just like how the great lord souls could influence power. After Navlaan's execution I think part of his soul influenced a powerful sorcerer to pursue the art of dark. This would explain how Navlaan mentions him being created and how he has 2 personalities. Navlaan could have been a personality born of experimenting with the dark arts and eventually resurrected his old self back to life with the help of Aldia. I think Aldia came across Navlaan at one point and tricked Navlaan into helping him recreate a dragon. I also think Aldia imprisoned Navlaan after he created a dragon because of the threat he could pose to Vendrick and his throne.

This is how was my first time with Naavlan: -Do all the missions without killing anyone (excepts Cale in my first gameplay i doesn´t know if you finish the game you get his set). -At some point i think that now he will be pacifist. -Pulls the lever. -Regrets after two of his invasions. -"Now you´re dead boi!" go after his flesh incarnation. -Killed him with the greatsword buffed with crystal spell. -Never pulled the lever ever again in any gameplay.

Not as a contradiction, just as more interesting information on the topic. Were they all deformed because they were trying to make a firekeeper? (Because she's not on that hill, because she doesn't stay dead when you kill her, and there's an interesting theory that the question is even more *when* is she, since some things she says feels like she's talking from the future.) The royal sorcerer is Olenford. He mastered sorcery and sought new spells. This naturally led him to the source of hexes. Navlaan. Olenford's staff is found in the undead crypt. Olenford was possessed by Navlaan's spirit, and left his staff behind. Olenford's body is Navlaan's catalyst.

so here's my gaming experience with good ol navlaan: The first time I meet Navlaan I of course immediately released him to test my character (lvl170 something miracle knight at the time) and it was easy because he was almost at half HP when I hit him with a sunlight blade poweredup claymore 3 times to agro him...So than on another build (around lvl 200 dex samurai) I let him live after releasing him as I didn't think he was very strong and wanted to see what actually happens ... the first two times he invaded it wasn't a big deal... killed him somewhat quickly ... and than at the giant lord bonfire he used a fucking HOMING scraps of life .... the most OP spell ever? he killed me like 4 times with that shit and he never used it before that....I had no idea what hit me the first two times

Perhaps you are just reading the description in an ambiguous light. Navlaan claims to have sealed himself away to prevent tragedy, but could a sorcery truely possess a will of its own? So perhaps Navlaan is not talking about sealing himself in the vault we find him in but rather that he sealed himself into his own spells to prevent himself from dieing when he was executed. Truth can be elusive, and the tales surrounding him are questionable. Only, it is clear a strange power possesses this sword. See I think "tales surrounding him are questionable" because he talks in double speak. Not lying but obscuring though use of language. Gilligan may be a test for you, but it may also be revenge at the same time. Gilligan is a thief obviously, and is in possession of items that are obviously stolen. Perhaps he stole from Navlaan? Perhaps they all did. The jeweled scimitar? The key to the Majula mansion? His Hex? The Aged Feather? Perhaps all items taken from Navlaan (or given away by his other half) Each revenge covered over by a separate coinciding objective. He can speak around his true goals by speaking in double-talk. I do think it's Aldia BTW.
