Dark Souls Lore: Black Dragon Kalameet
The Dragons Part 2
The Dragons Part 1:
• Dark Souls Lore - Seat...
With Christmas done, it's back to the lore! And we're finishing up our discussion on the dragons today - we'll be talking about the Bringer of Calamity, the everlasting stone dragon of Ash Lake, the drakes, the hydras and even the man-eater shells!
On the topic of dragons... who would win, Grigori or Kalameet? The Bringer of Calamity or the Merciful Winged Death?
The REAL dragons know how to hold a REAL party. Ignore Seath, hang out with Kalameet!

Kalameet's tail is the hardest boss in Dark Souls.

+CidGuerreiro1234 Actually, it's not so bad. I simply kept rushing him till he tried to step on me. Get far behind him... directly, and he'll bring that ass down on ya. Of course, I died so fucking much so I could learn his moves. But it was so satisfying to two hand his on sword on him. I didn't know what the effect was, so I squealed loud as fuck when I beat him that way.

Yep, I kept on dying till I could run past or dodge each of his attacks. They're really telegraphed. You can dodge through the sweeping fire, but I found it easier to get outta range. It looks so cool running through the fringe of the flame and not get hurt. After I got his tail, I tore them ankles up with my gold tracer. I grinded that thing to +5 and it shits on my +5 nito sword

Well do note it is also Oolicile in present day, perhaps Kalameet was looking for a nesting ground? Using what we know of the dragon's themselves, their homes were the great trees. Ash Lake seems the remains of the burned down forest (hence why it is likely that the Dragon covenant is there and the "newly" hatched great stone dragon makes sense), and I do wonder if the dragon's didn't seek a new home similar to their old when driven off and mostly killed out by Gwyn and his knights. A forest like Oolicile might have worked.

If you try to take on the perspective of a dragon like Kalameet, supposed last of the ancient dragons, how lonely must that thing feel? If he had emotions or anything like that, I imagine that despite his power he was more alone than any being in the whole Dark Souls world at the time. His family is gone. He's the last of his kind. That's an incredible burden and I can see how it could lead Kalameet towards an extremely hopeless mindset. Somebody will kill him or he lives the rest of his days without any real purpose. To me this would lead to a sense of vulnerability and that can be illustrated by the very nature of the ring he drops.

first you must get the calamity ring, then you must give 99 dragon scales to the everlasting dragon, then you must acquire EVERY dragon weapon in the game (except the dagger) and raise them all to +5. then you must talk to everlasting once more, he will send you to the painted world to talk to the zombie dragon, the zombie dragon will tell you of a half breed dragon who waits just ahead, and tells you that if you want to meet it, you must defeat the undead dragon. if all is done right a new set of dialogue will open with priscilla, i won't go into detail of what she says, but it ends with her letting you pet her fluffy tail.

While I normally don't have any theories of my own when it comes to Dark Souls I did notice something interesting in the Depths that I haven't heard other people mention. Right above the Gaping Dragon's Boss arena is one of Seath's overseerers. Perhaps the Gaping Dragon was also born along with the stone dragon but Seath found him and started to experiment on him in order to determine the secrets to his immortality. That might be an explanation for why he drops no scales either because Seath essentially picked him clean, mutating him in the process (wouldn't put it past him). And this is pushing it but it might be possible that what seath learned from the Gaping Dragon he put to use in creating the Serpent warriors.That's a stretch but it's just a theory ....... A GAME THEORY!!!!!! Sorry. Had to happen.

Maybe everlasting means more than ageless or immortal. Everlasting dragons could be a concept that a true ever lasting Dragon must always be in existence and that while the cycle of fire and dark continues, the dragons will always be there.
@camobranson09
@camobranson09 8 жыл бұрын
+addicted2SODA1 That's a good point. Perhaps we're looking at the word "everlasting" in a wrong light. *switches light bulbs* There we go. Now lets examine. Everlasting could mean it's literal meaning of: Never ending, immortal, etc. But what if, bare with me here, guys, what if it were something else. What if it simply meant "to never face a true death." There are no undead dragons in Dark Souls 2 and we haven't seen any in 3 thus far. What if those "undead" dragons were more akin to "nearly reincarnated?" What if we kill them, freeing their souls to find new forms. What if the dragon never truly dies but, like the fire, is rekindled, recycled, and reborn. There are, from my understanding, far more dragons in Dark Souls 2 than in 1 and the writers for 1 still had their hands in the candy jar for 2 so I'm sure they wouldn't have let anything lore breaking slip through. What if the dragons simply reincarnate now that their scales are gone? Surely most may not have learned to do this but some could have. This could make it so that the Stone Dragon of Ash Lake is a reincarnated dragon, Sieth was never considered to be a "true" dragon, and it would be possible, with this, for Kalameet to be the "Last Ever-lasting dragon." What if that just meant he was the only one who hasn't been reborn yet? The only one who's gone undefeated even since before the dawn of gods. Just a theory though.
@edwardfrench9368
@edwardfrench9368 8 жыл бұрын
Personally, I believe the Stone Dragon and perhaps ash lake itself, was somehow hidden by the Furtive Pygmy/Mannus deep below the world, whom felt guilty over the dragoon slaughter and wanted to protect a remnant. This would explain why the dragon is willing to deal and share scales with humans, aside from trying to repopulate dragons but also because it has a soft spot for it's savior's descendants.

I never fought Kalameet, not because I couldn't take him but because I didn't want to. One reason being I am a dragon fan, and not in the "they're cool, i want to kill them" way that many seem to be a "fan" of them. The other reason is, I never saw what he's supposed to be "guilty" of to justify killing him. Here's my thoughts on the whole thing. The only real negative thing you hear about him is "Even Lordran dared not to invoke his rage" (more or less). So he's quite angry and brutal. But here's the thing. From the info you get he's the LAST of the ancient dragons, which means he lived though the dragon wars that began the age of fire, he lived through all those years of seeing his kind being slaughtered, betrayed by Seath and hunted to extinction. And more, notice how despite being an ancient dragon which had "stone scales of immortality" that required powerful magic to even penetrate you can kill him with ordinary weapons. Then look at his burned and somewhat scarred looking body. To me it looks like he didn't survive the war unharmed, he had his scales stripped off of him, entirely as he's doesn't drops scales when he's killed. So seen his world forcefully transformed, his kin murdered over the cause of between decades and centuries, having to flee constantly AND probably being painfully stripped of his protective skin... yea, he has a reason to be angry at every living thing that came out of that age. And whats more, when you find him what does he do... he lands on a bridge, give you one look... and then flies away into a valley, the dead bodies down there having stuff on them that indicates they wanted to kill him. He doesn't attack you till you come after him... all he wanted was to be left alone... YOU are the one that invaded and angered him. If you think I'm over analyzing this, analzying the characters is a fairly large part of it. And really, most of what I hear when analyzing dragons is "well, we KNOW dragons are evil, so..."

Human (undead?) nature. Dragons are large, terrible creatures with immense power in the world of Dark Souls. Gwyn and his ilk found immense power of their own in the Lord Souls. We don't know who struck the first blow, but the intro indicates that it was Gwyn. "They challenged the dragons." But as to their reasons? Well, we don't know. Perhaps it was pride or perhaps the dragons were being rather mean - who can say!

@Dalton Davis for me, it was very simple. The human had to fight the dragons to just find their place.Kalameet fought too and the dragons loosed. He don't attack you the first time bc he just don't care. He is not a danger bc he know if he start destroy too much things the human will fight back. Attacking him now have no justifications in reality,other than cough giving you the opportunity ,wanting him to die for the war. And i don't really think he was so much weakened from the war:the "ordinary weapon" you have just killed all the lords that fought the dragons.

The hydras are the creation of seath. As you may notice they're guarded by seath's creations and the hydras are scaleless. They also have similar skin colours to seath. Seath probably created the hydras to 1. Capture girls 2. Do his bidding or whatever 3. The hydras being scaleless make him not the only scaleless dragon.

I feel that Frampt and Kaathe and all of the other serpents are like a higher power. They don't really perceive the world like everyone else; evil and good are meaningless concept to them. And the reason they oppose each other is just to drive the world, or something. Because, well, procession often comes from disparity. They aren't truly enemies.

The idea of serpents being "imperfect dragons" is one that has roots in Japanese legend and lore. From software, though is utilizes a lot of Western styled fantasy themes, also incorporates ideas from Japanese lore and fantasy in places. As soon as I saw the bit about the serpents being imperfect dragons I recognized the idea as one I've seen before. It is sort of...accepted, I suppose sort of like the lore of Unicorns purifying water and being drawn to maidens is accepted in Western legends, and commonly referenced and built upon. From what I understand, dragons in eastern lore are more often viewed as powerful beings that could be dangerous, but deserved reverence and respect, while serpents were a lower kind of creature that, were it to somehow ascend, could become a dragon and take on its higher power. This is supported by the fact that many Eastern depictions of dragons are very serpent-like, especially traditionally, and the only thing that really sets them apart from snakes are their short limbs, horns, and often their flowing manes, as their bodies are coiled and serpent-like. That said, there is a lot more complexity to this statement in Dark Souls than a simple Japanese myth, and it has been built upon with great originality.

It seems like both Kaathe and Frampt are both working towards their own selfish ends. The covetous serpent rings depict serpents as selfish beings "devouring prey even larger than itself," and I think that actually might be a clue to the driving force of the ancient serpents. It seems like both Kaathe and Frampt are pursuing immense sources of power, i.e. the First Flame and the spread of the Abyss, but they do not agree on which source is strongest. Frampt displays a direct connection to the First Flame through his ability to turn inanimate objects into souls like a fire turns wood into flames, so it makes sense that he would want the Chosen Undead to strengthen the Fire. Kaathe on the other hand feeds directly on humanity and grants us power and equipment based on how much of it we give him, so it's in his best interest to extinguish the First Flame to spread Dark. So both serpents seem to be manipulating events to gain more power, though I have no idea why they could be pursuing that much power.

You can hear waves crashing against the shore in Darkroot, down where all the black and red lizards jump up onto the land. I always thought it was odd as there is no visible sea or water where the sound effect occurs only a giant crevice. I always thought it as an oversight by the devs. But since you mention the hydra being in Darkroot (the other being down in ash lake where this sound effect also occurs if I remember right) I'm now guessing it's to show an unseen connection between the two. It would explain why there are mushroom people in both areas as well.

my thoughts were that kalameet was thought to be the last of the dragons because the gaping dragon and the everlasting dragon both remained hidden in ash lake. there are still many arch trees down there, so my thoughts are that the flames used to burn the trees were put out, and the land was forgotten. after centuries passed, the dragon we now know as the gaping dragon crawled his way through the great hollow and escaped to the depths in search of food and shelter away from others of its kind. after years spent in the depths, the sewage and rot tore away and mutated at its flesh, deforming it and melting away at the flesh that once covered its ribs (now its second mouth)
@L0st_Sensei

***** anything is possible in this game when you really think about it. perhaps there was more than one dragon that traveled to the depths, but some traveled higher to the surface after the mutation, only to be killed by the gods. or perhaps they were the same breed when it began, but only the one mutated. keeping his head up, it would not have become infected with the rot. everyone has there own theories, but none can be proven true or untrue. that's the fun of this game ^^

Perhaps the hydras rose from the remains of other dead dragons? The hydra in Darkroot is in the future version of Kalameet's boss arena, and the hydra in Ash Lake perhaps rose from the corpse of the mother dragon who laid the egg that spawned the everlasting dragon, who perhaps died in childbirth? Honestly, I'm kinda opposed to my own theory here, but it makes sense...to an extent. Gods, why do Dark Souls Dragons have to be so complicated? There's Ancient Dragons, like the one in Dragon Shrine, Duke's Dear Freja's Boss room, and the Dragon Memory, then there's Super Ancient Dragons, like the one whose skeleton we find in Aldia's Keep (Who, might I add, is the only dragon large enough to harbor a tooth the size of the Dragon Tooth Weapon), then there's Seath; then there's regular dragons, who may or may not be actual Ancient Dragons, such as Kalameet and Sinh, maybe even Gaping Dragon, then the not actual dragons but not drakes either Guardian Dragon & friends...plus the corrupted ancient dragons that are the Primordial Serpents, then there's Drakes...then there's the not-ancient but immortal anyway Stone Everlasting Dragon in Ash Lake...hell, my head is starting to hurt.

***** That would break the hydras-rise-from-dead-dragons-theory. If the mother died in the war why would the hydra be in Ash Lake? That also makes me think, what if the hydras keep part of the memory or personality of the dragon they rose from? It'd explain why the hydra in Ash Lake so vigorously guards the Stone Dragon: it's its child. Just a thought. Personally these theories are too unsupported for my liking, but I like putting them out there for others.

Here's my thoughts on the serpents: There is a lot of implication in their name, Primordial Serpent. If we break it down, primordial means before life or before some kind of creation. That would imply their existence before some kind of creation, which could be the creation of the first flame or, even more likely, before the everlasting dragons appeared. Serpent is a little tough, but by the way Frampt and Kaathe interact with mortals and gods, it seems serpent is coming from the Christian representation of sin as serpents. This would imply their goal is to manipulate for change and change alone. Frampt and Kaathe obviously represent the differences and similarities of light and dark, how they are two different orderings of the same motivation for change. I don't think Frampt and Kaathe have any desires outside of causing change. We know they are both part of the same group of serpents that will bow down to the play regardless of the ending, so to me Frampt and Kaathe seem like professional rivals. I think all serpentine motivation is change, because if we take serpent to be a reference to the biblical serpent in the garden of eden that would imply they manipulate to bring about change. They have no higher motivation, no higher calling - they are old gods of a time before fire and dragons, and their only cause is to manipulate and form the world to their order of light or dark.

and how does one last..I have to call him a coward. is he a coward for just been able to survive. think a bit. when you start the game, there is that story about the fire etc. but than the story tells about war against the dragons. how spears shatter their scales and how Nito released miasma upon them and Seth betray them and all that. so dragons were defeated. but if Kalameet still exist. it means he must have survived from the war..which is impossible when thinking about the end of other dragons. so Im making an argument that Kalameet was a coward who run away and went hiding during the time of war and when dust had come down he rise up as a survivor. as now having all the glory what comes to dragons only to him self and what people think about him. and yeah I do think serpants are just heads of a hydra which has a pretty damn big body (because the heads are so damn big). and because they all has their own brain they think separate things. but still share the common thing to order you around and make u believe what they want. and guess there is other undeads so rest of the heads might be speaking to them. and why does hydra drop dragon scales..well, hydra in greek stories isnt a dragon what so ever. its just a monster, more related to snakes and many cultures have their own hydras, but they have never really have same abilities than dragons which would relate them to dragons. so if hydras of this game are anything like those. maybe hydras feed on dragon corpses and swallow dragon scales. and why there is one in dark root..I guess it just went there, its good place as any. but why there is those crystal golems surrounding it. werent those Seths creations..why send them there if he is looking for immortality. its nothing there in the forest that would help him. tho I dont think dragons would be able to kill humans. chosen undead is only mere human after all. and he is able to kill dragons. even that lords had great war towards dragons. pigmy choose better than they did. guess he foresaw what humans were able to do and know better than to use the soul to him self. he would been just one like rest of the lords. instead he choose to be selfless. even that he leave humanity to decide its own fate and know it could make mistakes. like spreading darkness all over the land. guess he just had to believe that humans would choose the right path. but can be just see the writer jumping on his office 'ASK ME WHAT IT MEANS, ASK ME WHAT IT MEANS!! LOLOLOLOL!!!'

It is possible Kalameet was a coward! But I think the more likely case for his survival is just how much of a badass he supposedly was. Gough makes a point to emphasize that not even mighty Anor Londo dared provoke him... of course, Gough then does cripple Kalameet rather easily. All the same, I think the point is that Kalameet was just incredibly powerful and they didn't want to risk losing so many good men against him... or perhaps they thought he'd come and burn up Anor Londo.
@KossolaxtheForesworn
@KossolaxtheForesworn 10 жыл бұрын
Silver Mont yeah dragons arent all just mindless beast. even that most powerful warriors and knights would been send to kill Kalameet. he would probably fly to londo and attack it killing everyone. I dont think he is so badass. he sure is powerful, he is dragon after all. but I dont think he would survive in actual war. he has good attacks and other things, but other dragons have fall in war and there was thousands of them, you must win the war and I dont think they would have let any dragon just walk away as 'meh we have killed so many so it doesnt matter at this point' no, they wanted to slaughter them all. so Kalamee might be strong against one or small group. but warrior king, knights, albino dragon, witches and nito....yeah Im still gonna make that argument that he escape and went hiding. he was too weak to fight in war, even that he might not have feared death. but he might have feared end of his existence.

Well if you talk to Gough he actually gives you the attrition rates for the war between the gods and the dragons. He says that for every dragon they killed they lost sixty (three score) of their own. It's possible that Kalameet was simultaneously the most powerful dragon and the most cowardly, but we can't really know that because other than Seath (who is unique) we're never really given any insight into how dragons think, or if they think at all. Do they fear death? Did they realize they were going to lose the war and be wiped out by the gods? Did they despair? Did they hate Seath for betraying them?

Awesome video. Few people in the community talk about Kalameet and Gaping Dragon. One thing that comes to mind: the dragons have a lot of descendants. How they all came to be? They couldn't be all part of a giant pile of eggs in Ash Lake. What if they are still reproducing? That would explain the amount of dragons in Dark Souls II.

Based on that tree-like boss on the Dark Souls 3 teaser I assume that the archtrees gives birth to the Dragons, thats why the witches burn them down but not all of them. The Everlasting Dragon in Ash Lake is surrounding by those giant trees that look and could be archtrees, so he might have been born there and not because of Kalameet.

Just a possibility as to why the clams drop purging stones: purging stones don't actually cure curses, they just redirect them into themselves as a proxy, and the stone has a human skull incased in it. So you may just be finding a skull that would work as a purging stone.

I think the reason the man eater clams drop twinkling titanite is because the inner layer of the clams mouths seem to be made of it, I mean they do look quite similar. If you read the twinkling titanites description it says that it emits a powerful energy, this makes me believe that the corpses eaten my the man eater clams are then compresed and purified into purging stones, much like how actual clams make pearls.

I agree with your theory of Drakes being humans who completed their dragon transformation because in Dark Souls 2 "Cursed" trailer you can see that the drake that attacks the hero has legs and torso are just like the legs and torso of the chosen undead transformation fro the dragon covenant, something that Vaativiadia says in his trailer review and may be confirmed when the game is released in March.

The Hydra in the Darkroot Basin is a child who was like Seethe an abomination or a for lack of a better term a mutation like the everlasting dragon it is an egg that hatched from Kalameet no less because it is proved that the Darkroot Forest/Basin is where Oolicile once was and if you think about it you fight Kalameet in a large area which has waterfalls and so it most likely was an area where Kalameet was or rested so it is never told how long the eggs layed before hatching so my take on it is as the lake area filled by the water the dragon inside the egg started to mutate so when it hatched it could still live that is my take.

I also thought about the snakes beeing hydras. They have a similar autonomy and the snakes all look the same. If that should be true, it also explains why Kaathe and Frampt are not fighting each other: They would have to damage themselfes. It also tells us, that they probably know the location of the other snakes. Frampt was blocking the Firelink shrine, so Kaathe couldn't influence the chosen undead before him. And it also explains, why Kaathe doesn't appear when you first talk to Frampt. About the everlasting dragon: He is an error in the plot that I couldn't solve. Similar to the Ashe Lake skull. You don't get to know much about the area at all. It seems to be a reference to the norse mythology.

My guess with the clams, The ones in ash lake dont belong there (dont have a thought on this) they orginally resided in the crystal caves, twinkleing titanite grows off their shells (gotta come from somewhere), and when they eat humans they carry the skulls much like a pearl untill it turns to a stone, you take the purgeing stone and use its leftover humanity to rid yourself of curse and pass it onto the soul inside.

When I played dark souls for the first time, the everlasting dragon was the creature which impressed me the most. I mean, his name, the soundtrack, the vibe at the ash lake, his overall mystery and then how he opened his wings and just stood there in front of me... For me it was the most impressing moment in dark souls, I'd love to know more about him. Personally I think, the gods were wrong about Kalameet being the last ancient dragon, since they just didn't detect/recognize another, much more silent, inconspicious one right beneath their feet hidden at the ash lake.

I like to think that the drakes in the valley are tied to the fall of New Londo: the darkwraiths are tied to Kaathe, and as an incomplete dragon and enemy of those with the lord souls there may have been some from of dragon worship in New Londo, which helped in its flooding. It's kind of far fetched though, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's evidence that straight up contradicts this.
