Dark Souls Lore: Oscar of Astora
It's been a long time coming, but finally we're talking about the Knight of the Undead Asylum - Oscar. Just what was his role originally intended to be? And just why was it cut at seemingly the last minute, considering that all his dialogue was recorded? And just what implications does it have concerning the primordial serpents, Kaathe and Frampt?
Also, when I was scouting for the picture of the Elite Knight holding his fist up, I realised that it seems like he may've been resting at Firelink Shrine with two individuals who appear to be Iron Tarkus and Anastasia of Astora. Now, that was just a trailer, and Tarkus lacks his greatsword (seems to have a Zweihander) but just what could this mean? Considering the Elite Knight / Oscar is indeed heading in the direction one would, were they returning to the Asylum... could Oscar and Tarkus have been travelling together, and then Oscar departed to the Northern Asylum, where he found us? And why would Anastasia be out of her cell, if it was indeed her? Probably nothing important, but I just thought that could provide some cool "prologue" for the knight.
Isn't that Oscar picture awesome? Wouldn't it be awesome if you could get it on a shirt or hoodie? Well, guess what! You can. I think I will, it's my favourite one so far.

I heard someone put it quite eloquently that Oscar represented more traditional RPGs. The child of a honorable family, a destiny handed to him. He had everything other protagonists would, but, despite his best efforts, he failed in his mission, he handed the keys, the estus flask off to a lowly undead. In any other game, we would have been a draugr in some dungeon, killed by the dragonborn, a random monster in castlevania, dime a dozen, to be cut down en masse. But in Dark Souls, we end up winning the day. Not because we're heroes, fated like Oscar. But just because we, an ordinary undead, had the strength of will. That's why we look the same as the other hollows when we die, we're not different from them, more determined sure, but we never had fate on our side. The Chosen Undead is a title to they that earn it. We were a random low level enemy. Oscar gave us kindness. And when he, the protaganist of the game fell, we took the mantle. And that's why my Undead fights at least. In the memory of the real hero, who fell too soon.

I think that oscar died multiple times. Often npcs become hollows after they lose hope, maybe he died multiple times against the asylum demon , lost hope of escaping and he saves us because he wants someone to succeed where he failed, escaping the asylum and stop the hollowing

His wounds from the asylum demon were probably too great for the estus to do anything. Although I will admit that is a pretty big plot hole like why the hell didn't he just use the estus flask?

I think Oscar, knowing that his life was ending, searched for the chosen undead he speaks of. Finding the chosen undead, he tried to help us by challenging the Asylem Demon. He fell through the roof and was dying when we come to him and he gives us his most valuable possesion. The Estus Flask. Oscar then dies. Knowing in his heart that he helped complete his final mission.

you have to realize that no game is ever released with all the content the developers wanted to implement. There were doubtless many ideas that the developers wanted in the game but couldn't put in the game. They have to finish the game eventually.

***** Agreed. There's also content that COULD have been put in, but was cut for reasons we may or may not know. One advantage that games have over movies in most cases - you don't have to worry about running time! A lot of movies have to trim content that adds little to the overall experience. In video games, you can make content optionable, so you have to approach it in a whole new manner. Of course... some games really could use with trimming down. Good example I can think of: Gears of War 3 has an hour or so of gameplay dedicated to walking around a boring factory looking for parts for a submarine. That REALLY should not be in the game, it kills the flow and was pointless.

I don't know how to PM somebody but I have a request to make: My favourite NPC in the game, and the one who I believe gets way less attention than it deserves, is the demon firesage. if you look at the description of his catalyst, it remarks that it was the first demon, and the last master of the original fire arts (there used to be fire sorcery, which is one of the things that leads me to think that dark souls 2 is a prequel) I don't know if you take requests but there don't seem to me any good lore videos about him. pretty please?

I think the reason Oscar is in the Asylum is very simple: "Thou who art Undead, art chosen... *In thine exodus from the Undead Asylum*, maketh pilgrimage to the land of Ancient Lords... When thou ringeth the Bell of Awakening, the fate of the Undead thou shalt know..." I think he just believed that, in order for him to fulfill the prophecy, he would need to go to the Undead Asylum, then manage to escape. After all, _he_ is the one who tells us about the prophecy in the first place.

I feel that maybe the reason he was cut was for a game-play mechanic. Perhaps they simply felt that he put too much direction into the game at certain parts, making it easier to figure out where to go. Either way its rather unfortunate that his story was cut.

Though a bit off topic he mentions it in the video so I figured no better place to put it. I was thinking about how Kaathe and the other Primordial Serpents bow to the player at the end and say they're yours to command, which can be a bit confusing since most people presume both serpents are lying and just using you. And then I got to thinking, they very well still could be. It's not as if the world is just going to stop spinning if you allow the flame to die out. You'll continue on and while many will perish without the flame there will be survivors and they'll need a leader. I figure the serpents know most sane folk aren't going to trust a giant black demon mustache as their leader so they need you, at least for a time, until all mortal things die off or the cycle renews. A primordial serpent, as the name implies, can live forever while you and whatever kingdom you might build should you go that route is finite and like a hundred cycles before you will fall apart long before the serpents. So they pretend to bow to you, giving aid, but in actuality slipping their own intentions into your ear. And slowly but surely their will becomes done since they themselves cannot fight and use force to succeed. And a hundred or a thousand years later when you're finally no more you've simply forwarded their cause and were no more than an important pawn, soon to be forgotten in place of another. And if all it takes to manipulate you is faking fealty I can certainly see the manipulative serpents doing so.

I roleplay as a low-ranking Knight who fought alongside Oscar and we caught the darksign curse together. Oscar escaped first, ready to escape and remembers his dear friend, The Chosen Undead. He searches the prison, and finds his friend, alone and without hope, and sets him a key. There Oscar takes to the courtyard and waits on the roof to find his friend, only to be attacked by the demon once again. Then the TCU finds Oscar, dying in rubble, and Oscar aids his friend, one last time. Then the TCU sets off in honor of his dearest friend, to continue his story, and keeping Oscar alive in his heart.

my my. you left quite the cliffhanger on that one. i can't wait to see what you bring to the table next. as for me, i always thought of oscar as a friend, and a reminder. like you said, he seemed to be a mirror, but for me, it was a mirror of what would happen if we failed, not of our choice of actions. it was a grim reminder that this world is cold, and its inhabitants unkind. even despite this, he enabled us to succeed where he had failed. in some way, his original purpose stayed in the game in a much more minor role than originally intended, but in a way that left an impact on the players. instead of being a mirror of light and dark, he mirrored failure, and loss, but in doing so, enabled the player to succeed, making the player a mirror to oscar, just as much as oscar mirrored the player.

Oscar is an interesting one, and no mistake. As has been a theme with these videos, everyone in Dark Souls has their own goal - they don't exist merely to info-dump you, and Oscar's is perhaps the most interesting as his goal and yours are much the same (from a game-play perspective, from a lore/RP perspective, you make your own goal) and of course, it certainly says something about the Chosen Undead, doesn't it? After all, they escape from the Asylum and at once make their way to Lordran. I mean, the bird does carry us there, but I expect if they really wanted to, they could've dropped off and respawned at a bonfire? Unless it would transport them all the way back to the Asylum... either way, it seems the Chosen Undead is drawn to his/her fate, no matter their origin.

that is quite true. its amazing what interpretations of a character can rise from a lack of information, or how something like this can completely change the focus of the character, yet still give so unimportant a character to a large portion of the game a great deal of effect, despite a short appearance. while i admit the second half of the game is rather un-polished, its hard to say there is a concrete flaw with how from approaches design, and this is quite good proof of that. they can take so simple a character, yet give so much meaning to just a few actions, just by the context of the rest of the game, in this case, estus, and his armor, as well as placement of his body. simple things, but they hold a great deal of weight. even his dialogue, simple in essence, holds a great deal more weight than players originally give it credit, simply because we probably don't listen at first. gamers nowadays are used to information being presented to them in a neat and easy to understand format forthe most part. dark souls goes in the opposite direction, in which it tells you nothing without you having to search for the information yourself(of which i'm sure you are fully aware XD). its a rather interesting style, and it makes me all the more excited for DS2. and all of this, from so simple a character as oscar of astora.

When i read Oscars trashed role.. i was actualy a bit sad... because i felt that his role would give the game an intresting turn. I have read his dialog, and i feel that is role was also to become some sort of friend of the player. Kinda like Ostrava of Boletaria.. and his ultimate fate of becoming your enemie would have a great impact. That comment about the Serpents being unperfect dragons gave me chills. From their positions in the game that seems like an accurate way to describe them (i.e. Frampt being a servant to the gods of old who slayed the dragons).

A place where all kinds of undead arrive... where friendship is formed by parting with 1 Humanity, where enemies are formed by prying too much, where everybody gives a sneaky look to the person who leaves the bonfires, and bids farewell and he reassures them...

I would bet on the later too, since it seems to me that DkS2 is going to be "Open World" much like it's predecessor and prequel. My worries come from that Firelink Shrine, although it is the main hub area, it doesn't feel like... "home", it just feels like the middle of Lordran, the hall that holds all the doors. (That and there is no mix of Light and Dark, there is too much light)

The reason I think Oscar was cut is because the times he would have appeared aren't really thematically consistent with the rest of the game. Throughout the game, you're the one with the power and the will to fight lords, traverse dark woods, explore ruins of anicent cities, etc. But, more to the point, I think he was cut largely due to his final appearance in the game. The encounter with Gwyn is about fighting a sombre husk of a once great Lord of Sunlight, reduced to a Lord of Cinder. A fleeting last ditched attempt of a man to preserve his Age of Fire. The music sets the tone of this perfectly. It juxtaposes itself against what a final boss is normally expected to be; an epic fight overcoming some great evil... Gwyn, in my opinion, is anything but. I believe all that build up, with the beautifully crafted lore, the music, the loneliness of the Kiln would have been completely ruined if Oscar, in a juvenile attempt to feel important, barged into the Kiln and tried to kill you because he sided with the opposing Primordial Serpent. It would feel tacked on and unnecessary. Sure, you might realise that the Serpents are manipulating mankind to their own ends but there is enough evidence of that already, especially if you know the story of Adam and Eve. So.. yeah. It was good this content was cut. It would have ruined the mood of the Gwyn boss fight >.< Love your videos though :3

Oscar can also be related to Oskar, which CAN ALSO be related to the old norse Aser, which are the demi-gods who live in Asgard (World of the Gods) It is noted that: "Astora is a refined land hinted to possess a highly advanced culture and society, recognized for its nobility. A land of noble elite, high-ranked knights and royalty, the land is fairly recognized for having skilled craftsmen" This has so many connections to Asgard that I can't even list them all.

Watching your videos during breaks of playing through the game again. I've played through this and Demons Souls 3 or 4 times each, and I use your vids to actually find NPCs and things I've missed, lol. I love it. Like a walkthrough without hand holding, and the lore is just fascinating. I was wondering if anyone has seen any nice Dark Souls tattoos...I have one of a darksign in black on my hand, but haven't really been able to find many. Another thing these videos have taught me is that there has to be people that love these games as much as I do! Keep up the good work, man!

Ive always had the impression that Oscar was once seen as The Chosen Undead but since he felt his humanity dwindling and knew that he was soon going to hollow. Thus saving you (the player) from your imprisonment in The Undead Asylum and giving his quest that he failed to you (the player). Thats just what i thought tho.

What if Oscar didnt go STRAIGHT to the northern Asylum to begin with, and instead, tried to venture through Lordran alone, until he met with a terrible fate in the Garden against the 2 giants and 4 spriggans, resulting in his hollowing, and causing him to be sent to the asylum?

But he wasn't hollow the first time you meet him at the asylum. There is no going back after hollowing. So it's impossible that the knight at the Darkroot Garden is Oscar.

Pinkie Pie Even if time is distorted, an undead can't simply travel to another's world. It needs to be through summoning or eye orbs. Only as phantoms... much like Witch Beatrice. She is dead in our world, but she's possibly alive in her own world. That's why we can summon her to fight Moonlight Butterfly and Four Kings later. Pretty sure that's what it means to travel to another's world. As for 'one undead takes one path in one world, another could take the opposite' I understand it as us, the chosen undead, having different options to choose from to get different outcomes of events. For example letting Solaire go insane/saving him. Another is letting Siegmeyer sacrifice himself, or you save him once more, or he doesn't survive the fight against Chaos Eaters even with your help. Just different paths undeads could take in their journey.

Interesting episode, as usual. Thanks for creating it. Well, as for the two serpents, it is entirely possible not to be deceived by them by attacking them on sight and making them disappear for the current playthrough. Had I met them without knowing who they are (I watched a Let's Play a long time before playing it/becoming a fan of Dark Souls), I might have done that. These two don't exactly look friendly and it's Dark Souls. It taught us that almost everything wants to see us dead and that we can never be too careful and should always pay attention unless we don't mind to restart at the last bonfire. Then they won't tell the Chosen Undead anything and won't manipulate him or her into doing anything.

I assume that Oscar turned Hollow because he felt his purpose had been fulfilled. By saving the chosen undead and giving us our goal, he has sent us on our journey. Once one's purpose is gone, people become hollow, so...

So, I love your videos and VaatiVidya's videos, really big fan. You guys really expand the DaS universe for us dumb and uncreative players. I have a question in particular about Oscar though. In both instances of Oscar being In game later (If he wasn't cut) or if he died (Is cut), why would he give you his Estus Flask? If he isn't cut from the game, he's going to need it for his adventure, considering his family has this grand legend of a chosen undead and he probably thinks he can fulfill it. If he is cut from the game, and knows he's going to die, then why doesn't he just take a swig from his FULL Estus Flask that he gives you? Either way, he needs that Flask and will die without it. Maybe I'm being too critical, but after watching this video and others about Oscar, I've always wondered this.

If Oscar's original content were restored, then I expect we would've obtained the Estus Flask from a different source (perhaps we would've just had it, or found it on a corpse or chest etc) As for why he didn't use it himself - doesn't he hand us over an empty estus flask? I seem to recall that is empty, but on the off-chance that it isn't... well, I think it's likely that he was already at 0 health, so to speak. He was just in a very long and drawn-out death animation! But yeah, he probably just used it all and had none left. So why didn't he ask us to run over to the bonfire, fill it up, and then come back? Who can say! Perhaps he was about ready to give up and go hollow.

I imagine dying while undead is a dramatic situation where if your stabbed and thats your killing blow you wake up instantly at the bonfire and the pain shooting though you is gone right away.Your just left there at the memory of death with nothing after it.If that were me dying left and right.I'd go crazy not wanting to continue because I was burnt alive,eaten,had my flesh turn to stone,getting stabbed by ghosts,getting crushed,and getting killed by friends.

I think that the serpents are indeed scheming together for a higher goal, the two we meet are extremes of both ends, giving us a turn for the worse either way. And in one of the sequel's trailers we see tons of these serpents, so maybe then we see their scheme close to fruition or we as the player is tasked to end their already fulfilled plan

Not sure how much info there is to back this up, or how much info could prove this wrong but I've come up with a theory that Kaathe and Frampt are the same Serpent. Now before you dismiss this, WHAT IF the serpents have two heads, one on each end. After all we never see the end of either serpent. A point that could back this up is that is you talk to Kaathe and then Frampt, Frampt is angry at you. How would he know you talked to Kaathe? Why would he be angry that you didn't talk to him? Couldn't Frampt have gone to the abyss as well? Unless he couldn't have. Maybe Kaathe being in the abyss prevents Frampt from being there since they are on opposite ends of the same body. My final point is that New Londo is directly under FireLink Shrine. You find Kaathe in New Londo (Abyss) and you find Frampt in Fire Link. Any thoughts? Not sure if you can reply but I will check back on here for additional comments.

I'm not sure if you figured this out since the creation of the video, but if you kill the asylum demon on your ng+ the first go through the asylum demon doesn't get the chance to kill oswald, enabling some of his story (the ending confrontation). I remember seeing conformation somewhere... maybe try it for yourself?

I think I'm going to have to play through the game at least twice before I can evne think about lore videos! I plan on streaming my first time playing through the game on xbox. Maybe Oscar came to the asylum for pilgrimage (remember the "in thine exodus,maketh pilgrimage to the land of ancient lords" thing?) Although maybe he helped us because he thinks that we're not fully hollowed yet. Don't you get it? By giving us the key he gave us hope. A purpose. We were saved by him. Next thing we know he is all beat up, unable to even lift his hand. The pain is to great to handle he gave up and pass the torch to us, hence how he gave us his estus flask. The cut content, Oscar was supposed to be the polar opposite of our decision. As we are about to lit the first flame, he walked into the shrine to stop us because he wants to become the dark lord. He will try his hardest to be a part of destiny. Imagine saving some random guy and in the end you lose your duty to that guy. He would have been as important as Solaire if his content wasn't cut.

I think you have amazing ideas!! buuut on this i think there is a little more to consider. If you notice right after you leave the room that contains the "injured oscar" you hear a blade cutting sound and recieve 100 souls. Maybe he purposely came to the undead asylum to find a non-hollowed soul because he had already given up on his mission and you said yourself that giving up may cause hollowing itself and perhaps after you left the room he commited suicide knowing that you were taking up his arduous quest and he may finally give up and "rest"? Isn't him committing suicide like the ultimate form of giving up?

I reckon that each cycle of the curse with a dark option (becoming the dark lord, the dks2 version and usurping the flame) is an experiment by Kaathe to try and usher in the age of man. In Ds1, the lack of a flame doesn't usher in the dark age, as the first flame still manages to spark back to life (mentioned somewhere). And we see in Oolacile that man cannot thrive in a flame less world. Dark Souls 2, I haven't looke at, but from what I do know, I think Kaathe was experimenting with holding back the curse with the crowns, but hat didn't end the undead curse, merely prevented its effects. In dark souls 3, Kaathe and his pilgrims of Londor help you perform a ritual which allows you to Usurp the Flame. Basically drawing its power into mankind and allowing the true age of man to flourish as the age of fire is truly over. Not only has the first flame died out, but it's powers transmutes over to humans

Kaathe doesn't really appear in DS3 either, just has people like Yoel and Yuria doing his bidding. The only reason we know of Kaathe's involvement at all is like a single line from Yuria so I think that it's possible that Kaathe had others doing his bidding in Drangleic, as he certainly does in Lothric

I think the idea of oscar killing bosses you dont based on your decisions would be insanely cool and perhaps some bosses you both would fight against as one. That would have been very cool and encourage new playthroughs. You could fight the bosses he would have while he fought the ones you would have. Met new characters and perhaps visit new places based on that. I wish they had done that.

I always thought it would be interesting if the serpents were actually not separate beings as they appear but actually a piece of a greater being in the abyss that uses them to manipulate the world. I have little basis for this train of thought besides we never the bottom of the serpents, it's more of something i thought of one day and just wanted to share it.

When you Hollow, it is because you no longer have meaning, nothing left to do. We never fully hollow because we have a meaning - to rekindle the flame, or take over Gwyn's position ourselves. As for Oscar, he has freed us - and because only one Hollow can escape the North Underad Asylumn to do what we did, he dies because his meaning is gone - it is not his quest. His meaning was to free us.

Unfortunately, there's no way to access it through normal gameplay. I'm not sure if it'd be possible for hackers/modders to put it back in - I believe they've managed it with Shiva partially, but that was quite simple as they just needed one item.

***** Although it's never confirmed strictly, I do believe that is the case; there are multiple worlds with some overlap. Solaire is present in our world at times (perhaps where the two overlap?) but I think he comes from "his own world." So to speak. If you help him get to the end of the game, the devs have stated that he links the fire. It's also the logic behind summoning other player characters. We are crossing to other worlds to help/hinder each other.

I pondered about the act of Humanity and Hollowing. I don't know why, but I feel like the act of becoming Hollow is synonamous of pain and suffering. It makes sense that the pain of dying is a terrible thing. To die repeatedly, feeling the pain of each death, and remembering it would greatly scar a person mentally. Even without Humanity, a person doesn't necessarily become hollow upon resurrecting. I wondered if the thing that keeps someone sane is the idea that a person has a goal, and retains their mind. The main thing I thought about was the fact that people who turn hollow in the game are people that lose their goal, or something happens along the way that transforms them into a hollow. Either the constant weight of remembering each death, and knowing that there is no end to the cycle. Maybe hollowing is the act of the mind of a human being broken by the constant death and revival. They lack most intelligence at first, having minor abilities that while great, and they can still retain some of their former skills, they still are shells of their former selves. I dunno, but I love the idea of it.

I think he came back to the Asylum for the peculiar doll, in the trailer he leaves Tarkus in Firelink and we can see him (assuming it's him, which I do) in the Painted World. Preasumbly he wanted to gain the Life-hunt or free Priscilla or whatever to help him fight the gods (in their current versions?) and their mates. Of course it's weird cause he failed in Asylum, but you know, weird time, different worlds, maybe trailer just meant that he wanted to go to Ariamis, but never did. Just as ringing the bell.

Great video. Oscar is actually a reference to Pokemon- you chose fire, he choses water and vice versa :P I'm probably about to sound really stupid (well I probably already do) but you fought the Stray Demon with lock on to make the fight longer/look more realistic right?

I actually DID start the Stray Demon fight trying to fight like the NPCs do with random backsteps and stuff, but then I kind of forgot about that. Remembered at the end so I thought I'd be clever and finish him with a flourish and a gesture... and then failed and missed him... It didn't really go to plan! And you know, that's a good point about the Pokemon stuff. Counter-picking always makes me angry!

Silver Mont The effort was appreciated, hopefully NPC fighting will be a bit better in Dark Souls 2 making it easier/less fatal to mimic. Would have been interesting if his gear had changed over the game a bit (maybe he has a dark hand at the end if he sides with Kaathe) always did annoy me that no one else tried upgrading their gear. I guess that was so we'd recognise them but some master fighter that could use multiple different weapons would be pretty cool. I guess Logan tried a little ^^

One nice thing about Dark Souls is that just about any set of armour is viable at end-game, if you upgrade it! And the Elite Knight set is one of the best when it comes to defence/weight ratio, I believe. Of course, they kept changing the stats in patches, which was odd.

Just want to point that out there but it's easier to not lock onto the stray demon during the fight and run for it's back until it charges up an AOE attack which is when you should hit him but still jolly good show with the full frontal assault
