So many holes in this story are filled in by DS3, I love it. The "smaller towns" around Anor Londo are Irithyl and other towns created by Pontiff and the Deacons, Gwyn's firstborn is the Nameless King, etc.

i prefer the theory in which havel tried to convince gwyn that seath must be stopped so seath framed havel by sending a mimic with an occult club to his basement which means the club will be found in havel's possession which will make gwyn want to lock him away. it explains why the mimic is there in the game since mimics are seath's agents, and also havel seems to me like an honorable knight, i dont think he would betray gwyn

I've sort of changed my opinion of developer-intended meaning after doing this series. I try to interpret the game entirely separate from what is known about the developers intention. It's sort of like a piece of music in that regard. The composer may have a message he wants to convey, but music can be so ambiguous that everyone will see it differently. And i think it's better to judge it on its own merits. Dark Souls is like that, to me anyway.

If you believe that Priscilla is the offspring of Seath and Gwynevere (which seems very likely), then perhaps Seath was more attached to Gwynevere than she to him. Such a union would have been forbidden, as evidenced by Priscilla's banishment to the Painted World, which Gwynevere would have agreed to, so that proof of her affair could be hidden away. Seath on the other hand, lost a child, and a lover who did not love him. Seath tried so hard to attain the immortality of his kin, but it had brought him only loneliness, and an eternal lifespan, without chance at love or affection, would drive anyone mad. Perhaps that is why Seath became insane, and perhaps that is why is so enamored with collecting maidens and experimenting with them... The maidens have become monstrosities, oddly serpentine like Seath himself. Maybe he's just trying to recreate the existence of a child harshly taken away from him, to fill the void of eternal loneliness.

Gods are often portrayed as fickle and self-absorbed, I think it was more to the prevent shame upon Gwyn's family, and to avoid scorn from other gods, which we know there are, because gods such as Flan and Velka exist outside of Gwyn's family. Or, Gwyn may have not known, and the painted world could have been made in secret. Or Gwyn was too absorbed in trying to deal with fading of the First Flame to try and deal with such trivial things.
@grimmSOL
@grimmSOL 10 жыл бұрын
I truly believe this. I think also Seath was seeking immortality not only because his scaled brethren, but also because of Gwen. What would happen if Gwen had a change of heart over Gwenevere/Priscilla and came after him? Maybe Seath was seeking this power to challenge Gwen for Gwenevere and his daughter? Gwenevere may have left being disgusted with how here daughter was locked away and Seath was treated, at which point I think she married Lord Flamm and founded Heide's ToF and Ornstein followed, protecting her.

Were the four kings human? I can't remember if that's mentioned. The main reason i think that the gods distrust humans is the dialogue from Artorias, Ciaran and Gough. "What is Dark Souls? Is it action? Is it horror?" Dark souls is a tragedy. Gwyn, the one responsible for the state of the world. You fight through the whole game knowing that you will have to face Gwyn. The kiln contains the last remnants of Gwyn's army, whom he led to their deaths. For all the suffering you've seen throughout the Lordran, you feel motivated to defeat him. You kill the last black knight, and walk through the fog. And now you get here. To this man, who's barely more than a hollow, let alone a God. With no cutscene, no grandiose music, and none of Gwyn's famous lightning miracles, Gwyn mindlessly charges you, only the somber music playing to punctuate the moment. Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight, no, Lord of Cinder, is cut down like just another mindless hollow. Someone who has no unpredictable attacks, and doesn't use any gimmicks. Just a fight. For 99% of us, you defeat him the first time. But you don't just defeat him; you methodically clip him down. You take no risks, give no mercy. This song isn't about an epic battle. It's a song about a slaughter. It sings the mountain you climbed, the countless deaths you endured, the long road that's now behind you. It has an almost nostalgic feel, and how could it not, when you slay the only Soul that can yet prevent the world from fading away into raw entropy. That's when it sets in. Gwyn was as much of a victim as anyone else. You didn't kill a corrupt king or a demon lord, you enacted a long overdue mercy killing on a poor, sad, scared old man who couldn't bring himself to face change. All the hatred for him disappears, and you're left with only pity. The same feeling you'd feel for the hollowed enemies you've fought the whole game.
@DanielEscovedo
@DanielEscovedo 3 жыл бұрын
Lol you said so much BS, but at least you said in a beautiful way, but it's misleading at best... EDIT: (mostly to explain it) In the first place Gwyn wasn't (isn't) supposed to be "easy" or "just another mindless hollow", he doesn't go hollow in the first place as he is a god. Miyazaki himself said in an interview that he reggreted making him parriable as he was supposed to be the greatest challenge in the game, what probably happened is that time constraints coupled with a significant underestimating of the players' ability to abuse (cheese) Gwyn with parrying ended up making him a somewhat easier battle than one would imagine, but it's still for many, one of the hardest bosses, but being hard in the end or not is not the point here, as it naturally varies from player to player's perspective (e.g. build) etc. The point is that it was in no way intended to be easy as the game's creator himself said. Even in a weakened form, Gwyn was supposed to be more powerful (harder) than every other boss. Also, it's only because he's in a weakened form that the player stand a chance anyway, as Gwyn at his prime would be impossible to defeat. Second, the music is melancholic yes, because it's supposed to be so, as Gwyn is the god of the world, so you're fighting to kill and succeed the world's most important (and fading) deity. Also, I must point out that the music is certainly one of the best end bosses musics in the history of gaming, it captures perfectly the mood of the moment and closes the game as a work of art. Third, yes, I agree that, with all being said, it is in the end a tragedy. It's a world of despair and hopelessnes, there's no way to deny that. This game is art.

I wonder if the reason why time is distorted in Lordran is because Gwyn's first born lost the annals because annals means historical record and I believe this annals he lost aren't just ordinary record but it keeps the time in place and because of that no wonder they stripped off his godhood. Wouldn't make too much sense but just my speculation.
@dragonmatt5
@dragonmatt5 11 жыл бұрын
Actually, this might be something, especially since many think Solaire is gwyn's disgraced son, and he is the one who tells the player that time is distorted and such. It would make sense that the one responsible for the distortion in the first place would be aware of their effects. wonder if there is something in game to support this better though, it is an interesting idea.

I thought it was because of the fading flame. Fire is change and change occurs through time. When time stands still there is not change. So with a weakening "flame," time gets distorted.

***** bimo rizki I love that idea (the idea of the fading First Flame cuasing the weird decay of the flow of time), but considering that we know literally nothing about the annals other than the fact that they were lost, it may be possible that they had some kind of stabilizing effect. Losing them is certainly serious, but is it really serious enough for Gwyn to strip his own son of godhood? That's a really severe punishment, and I get the feeling that it must have been in response to a very serious crime, even if that crime was a mistake.

There are some new interpretations with help of the original japanese texts that might put the story a bit different: - Gwyn linked the flame 1.000+ years prior to DS1. Artorias happened 300 years prior to DS1. - The statue of the firstborn in undead burg was build after Gwyn's death - When Gwyn died, there might have been a time where Gwyns firstborn came back from the dragons, but was then exciled by someone else than Gwyn(because already dead). Probably by Lloyd - Firstborn put down a sword at his father's grave So we might have gotten it all wrong and Gwyn never truly banished his Firstborn, but Lloyd took over the city and was a self-proclaimed King, as the items say, and then he banished the firstborn true heir

Theoretically speaking, an Age of Darkness should be impossible... The First Flame bore both light, and dark... Without it, wouldn't the world will simply revert to the state it was in prior - with the Grey realms of up, and down? Surely, the death of light, would both fulfill, and destroy, the purpose of Darkness, rendering reality into a state of nothingness, as without light, the dark is undefinable.

in this context especially, but even outside of dark souls, darkness and light are relative terms. The whole of creation was a gray sort of color, a middle ground between both dark and light. While you can say well then there must've been light in order for the world to not be pitch black, the whole of existence was made of a blend of all things that was so perfectly balanced that all the forces and attributes ceased to be. Think of it as outer space, a total vacuum devoid of anything, but that state of total lack is identical to an area in which matter and antimatter have just collided and annihilated each other

I like to think the curse of the undead is a natural part of the flame fading, Because when flame existed things became contrasted, light/dark and life/death. As the flame and light fades to be so does the border between life and death.

Thank you, VaatiVidya, for these amazing videos. I have only recently beaten Dark Souls for the first time, and as I understand it, a lot of the lore comes from NPCs and the item descriptions, which I didn't read a lot of. Plus, I wasn't able to complete the storylines of all the NPCs, so these videos really helped enhance my Dark Souls experience and cemented it as one of my favorite games of all time. I started a few new files, and already I'm looking more at the descriptions and finding clues everywhere to the lore of the game. Keep making these amazing videos! Praise the Sun!

it's a nice idea to have a compilation of all the smaller lore bits, but i just can't present it in the way i do prepare to cry..it's not as moving or interesting-it's more just facts. And if i just present speculation then you might as well just watch ENB's videos, because he's already covered it. But i am looking into doing videos on smaller parts of the lore.

My theory is when you fight Gwyn you arent really fighting him, but instead fighting one of the players who killed him and linked the fire. When you link the fire you take Gwyns place and burn your soul the same way he did so maybe when you link the fire your character takes gwyns armor and weapon and sits there the same way he did waiting for the next chosen undead to challenge him. And because Frampt pushes the undead to link the fire (and more then one undead probably escaped the asylum) it would make sense that you arent the only chosen undead that defeated the burning husk of the one who burns his soul.

I don't know anything about demon souls, but I love the way that Dark Souls conveys it's story. It tells you what everyone is supposed to know at the beginning, and the rest you figure out from exploring and examining items. For instance, the hawk ring by the giant blacksmith and Hawkeye mentioning blacksmith one time means that they obviously know each other, you just have to fit pieces together.

I always figured it was kind of an unanswerable question, metaphysically speaking. Disparity is a requisite of change, therefore before the existence of light and dark nothing could change or come into being. A sort of reiteration of the Kantian antinomy of time.

Absolutely true. I can understand why a general wont go into battle, he is the brain that keeps tries to keep death to a minimum and also has sacrifice his own men in battle. A king or God normally fights along with their troops in battle. To me, Gwyn of Fire just wanted to keep his status as head honcho. But then again committing suicide is no small feat either. I just feel that Gwyn took the easy way out. Every time I play now I go for the "Dark Lord" ending. Not because its bad. But because it is fated to happen.
