It's probably true though. It's no secret that Miyazaki loves the esoteric and gives reward to people that comb through every item, no matter how mundane to piece a story together. I know you wrote this as a joke, but it is likely the reason soulsborne games are so convoluted, with the lore only being revealed with meticulous cataloguing of 100% runs

Do you have sources from an interview with him ? I heard both versions of the story and, though the version with books in English is more common it seems less likely to me. Japanese is a difficult language to read since there are so many characters (kanji) to learn that even most adults don't know them all so it wouldn't be surprising that a young Miyazaki would struggle to read books even in his own language, doesn't mean he was particularly dumb. On the other hand, there aren't many books written in English in Japan, so I'm surprised he would have read that many... Now, as I said, I don't know for sure, but it would nice if someone could bring a proof either way.

feel like its important to point out, at the start when she mentions him struggling to understand big and complicated words, that isn't true, he was reading western Fantasy stories, which were often in English without having Japanese translated version available, he had to just try and read through them in a language he didn't fully grasp. which gives pretty much the same result, context would end up missing, which is where the lore style of Dark souls now originates from, it's not very specific or coherent, so you have to sort of figure it out on your own, instead of just reading it, you have to interpret the world around you. which I personally don't see why more RPG's didn't think of, it makes sense doesn't it? Experience, and interpret the world around you, instead of just listening or reading, being told what it is. as film critics say. "Show it, Don't tell it!"

It's always been amazing to me how the Souls games came at just the right time. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls fit in like a missing puzzle piece at a time when it felt like games were just degenerating into interactive movies. There was also a lot of post-modern deconstructions of the value of challenge in video games going on at the time. Dark Souls' success showed that people *do* want challenge, they *do* want to earn success. It was also a good case for video games' ability to show fascinating worlds and stories without excessive use of cutscenes and dialogue. People can be captivated without having everything handed to them.

Dark Souls is an absolute masterclass game. It is pure art and beauty with deep themes of life. There's darkness and despair and there's hope and fighting for our humanity. The central theme of purgatory is what really intrigued me. Those stuck in that world too long became "hollow". Which really relates to our lives on how if we let all that darkness consume us and we get lost in despair, we lose our humanity when we should be fighting for it. I never thought there could be a beautiful message from such a Dark game.

It's also perfect allegory for videogamers in general. When they give up finishing the game halfway thru the character in the game (and the gamer themselves) lost a purpose and become trapped in the middle of the story and become purposeless hollow. Demon's Souls was like an uncut diamond. Nobody knew what to do with it and it was a bit of a mess but look through it at the right angle and you could see beauty beyond your imagination. Dark Souls, its sequels and Bloodborne was like they cut that diamond brilliantly, and it sparkles all around but every now and then you think about that perfect radiance of Demon's Souls, whether it's the Old Monk, or Latria, or Maiden Astraea, or whatever, there was just a little bit of brilliance that shone through in Demon's Souls that has never quite shone through in any of the other games.

Why would someone even bother to thumbs down this?? Even if you had no clue what dark souls is This was amazing and heartwarming, Very inspiring to say the least. Thank you for making this!

indeed, but if even demons souls had some thumbs down, why can't we all deal with some of those as well? maybe they have their own beauty. have a nice week

I'm just saying like I don't understand why you would even thumbs down this? Like what's there to even dislike? that's a concious decision you make that you thought this was trash basically..

i cannot understand either. If i ever don't like something i would just watch another video, i only dislike videos that i find offensive :-?

Much like Miyazaki-San, "ICO" was the video game that got me back into gaming during my struggles, so in a way, we are kindred spirits! :D

I love this so much. it's great narration, great animation, and a great story. I even love that you set the ad break purposely and how you used it to give the story a pause. this is awesome

Miyazaki and Kojima would have a lot to talk about if they sat down and had a drink together. The two best minds in gaming right now.

It feels bizarre how From Software was able to make four King's Field-games way before Miyazaki's involvement in the company yet they are very similar to Souls-series in terms of the core ideals Miyazaki himself is now known for. I'm a bit curious what Miyazaki thinks about King's Field, Shadow Tower, Eternal Ring etc. From Soft's previous fantasy-games. Clearly the company had a burning passion for Souls-esque hardcore action-RPGs years before Demon's Souls and Miyazaki.
@sancturillore6 жыл бұрын
Well, those games might have been parts of the reasons why Miyazaki applied to join this company.(He might have applied to the several companies that made games that he enjoyed, and FromSolfware simply was the one that accepted him.)

This video and Hidetaka’s struggle to become a legend has truly inspired me to try and try again until I succeed. Im still a bit of a noob at Dark Souls but the spirited the grind and how it relates to Hidetaka’s struggle and victory really changes my perspective on the game and gives an excellent lesson in life.
