Also, like, the cart ride seems to be, at it's very basic form, something that is intended to set the mood for the journey ahead. Woolie has his things that are his own tendencies and preferences taking priority over how the audience would prefer things are done. But he admits they are his tendencies and preferences. Pat on the other hand, has a habit of taking that simple and hard to dispute statement, and turning it into hyperbolic, inflammatory "the way I like it is the only good way and the entire world should always be striving to do things the way I like or else it is bad and crazy" and it comes off as trying to present his preferences as facts. It seems like he doesn't grasp the concept that like, the strength of cards in a card game isn't just a DBZ sliding power scale, or the idea that he's only playing a limited number of cards each turn. About the Slay The Spire "adding cards or not" problem, taking it to the extreme can help make sense of it. If you have a deck of 15 not great cards and one card that reads "Instantly win the fight", then all you care about is drawing that card. Every card you add makes it less likely that you draw that card, so you want your deck to either stay small so it's always drawn quickly, or you want other cards that allow you to draw more cards and discarding more future cards you won't want to draw. And if the super good card isn't "Instantly win" but just a really good effect, then having a small deck or the ability to cycle through your deck quickly allows you to play it more times in a shorter amount of turns. I realize Pat will never read this but might be cool for people that don't play too many card games.

The things he's expecting from this show "BECAUSE TRIGGER" are arguably the worst parts of GL and KLK. How can you have any real character development when everything has to be exploding at all times? Characters need to sit and talk, the setting needs time to breathe. You need to see things and feel things. But Pat has Zoomer Brain, so he needs bright colours and flashing lights to be injected into his visual cortex every 5 seconds. It's literally the same logic behind him not liking the stagecoach/inn in DD2. The fight scenes are the only thing that matters, right? Preparation, setting the scene and actually having emotional moments are irrelevant. Kinda wild that they talked about the "if a game has unskippable cutscenes, it's a bad game/If the game's story is in a cutscene that I can skip, it's obviously not important." guy in the same podcast, because Pat is doing exactly the same thing.

I'm sure it's probably related to baby stress, but he really could do with not being like this for three hours during a podcast. I listened to the BRCF discussion and it was understandable the first time, then the darkest dungeon thing went on for an hour and he just couldn't let it go even after Woolie really did an amazing presentation on why the final boss rules so much. and then he started talking about Edgerunners. 29:25 Ignoring the parts that are bad is a very helpful ability to develop. Then you can still get alot of enjoyment out of something that is mostly good, even with some bad elements. Meanwhile if just a single bad thing can ruin it for you, regardless how good the rest is that's going to be ALOT of ruined experiences for you. The chances that there's at least some part of something as large as a game that's not going to be to your taste are pretty high.

Wether it's the last act of a game falling apart, or the last seasons of a show I like being bad, it can ruin the experience for me. When it comes to games, Dark Souls 1's second half pretty much destroys any desire I have to play through the game again, even if the 1st half was good. Like Shadow of the Colossus was brought at one point where swinging the sword felt bad at the start, but it was more than that. The whole attitude of "if I press the jump button once, I can feel if I'll like it or not" is inherently flawed because then you're not seeing how the jump works in the context of the rest of the game. Ironically enough, I thought Pat's argument for him not enjoying Cyberpunk was fair, because he did get a good chunk in to the series, and specifically stated that he was expecting more from both what he knows about Trigger and the Cyberpunk setting. On the other hand, hearing that he only played a bit of the tutorial and quit out of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk before even getting all the mechanics is infuriating to hear because it's not giving the game a fair shake at all. He didn't even get to the actual game at this point.

The big flaw with Pat's argument against the stage coach in DD2 is that he effectively considers it as a drawn out transition that occasionally gives you random items, so if it was removed entirely very little would be affected. The reality, however, is that it is the literal and figurative vehicle by which time is passed between encounters and events on this long road your party is traveling, and that time passing facilitates the positive and negative relationships of characters and their mounting stress levels, which is an objective improvement over DD1's simple 'long hallway = stress' mechanic because now that downtime doesn't just lead to slow, inevitable mental breakdowns for your characters with a infinitesimally small chance to gain a positive bonus by way of a virtue, but instead a chance to turn a motley band of mercenaries who barely tolerate one another to comrades that will fight and die for each other OR hate each other's guts and actively seek to undermine one another at every turn, thus adding to or alleviating the challenge of the game through dice rolls that can be skewed in your favor or against you.

It's the OCD "There is a right way (crowdsourced, fully optimized, absolutely zero-fun) way to build a character in Mass Effect/KOTOR/Baldur's Gate/ect) and a wrong way (Literally anything else.) Even if it's a perfectly viable character that you could totally beat the game with, if it's not "the strongest build possible for this class" then it's wrong, and his OCD won't allow that. Frankly, Pat wants to play RPGs with no character-building. I know this is kind of a late reply, but I do kinda think atmosphere building can be overdone. Now I haven't played DD1 or DD2, and I couldn't get into Slay The Spire, even though I love other deckbuilders like Monster Train. But for an example, a lot of people love The Batmsn 2022, but I can't stand it, just because I feel it could accomplish what it needed to in 2 hours rather than 3. Part of that is the establishing shots and tension building. But it went overboard.Yeah, I get Gotham is dark, rainy, and miserable, I don't need that established further. I get Batman is afraid of bats, I don't need to see him gingerly take his time getting an envelope from underneath a bat. Now granted, I've actually been tested for this, by body diffuses sensations far quicker than others. A pill that should activate in an hour will start working almost immediately for me. This...was one of the most intriguing podcast segments to me. I have played many different Card Games, and I want to highlight something about the analogy Woolie and Pat made when talking about Card Games: Neither of them is 'wrong', and both Woolie's and Pat's opinions/criticism are valid here. Let me explain: This isn't a singular phenomenon at all, as a matter of fact, 'Wizards of the Coast', the creator of the popular Trading Card Game 'Magic:The Gathering' have created psychographic player profiles to find out if they can put the players who enjoy their game for different reasons into fitting demographics, in hopes of creating better targeted product to said demographics. Out of this attempt, they actually found 3 player types, named Timmy, Johnny and Spike. Now, interestingly, Woolie is a very obvious Johnny, who has fun in those type of games by standing out and showing his personal tastes, whether it's choosing a badass team of characters or labbing out a combo only he is aware of. Pat on the other hand, moreso seems to be the Timmy-player type. He joins those type of games not necessarily for deckbuilding and expressing himself, but rather because he wants to have a pleasant experience and enjoys the gameplay itself. The thing I'm really curious about regarding Pat's brainworms, would be WHY the deckbuilding-aspect doesn't intrigue him. Is it because all the new systems seem too overwhelming when freshly joining a new game? Because as of the current state of Card Games, Pat's Brainworms would be valid, since long-running companies are aware of their Card Games becoming too difficult.

"Why shouldn't I take every new card?" I would tell Pat, think about RE4. Why don't you TAKE EVERY WEAPON you find? Why don't you cram the pistol, the sniper rifle and the TMP and the shotgun and the Magnum in the case at all time? "But they're new weapons! I should take them all!" Because, obviously you know that you wouldn't have a lot of room left for ammo and meds, but even if you did, the ammo drops would be dispersed between all the weapon types you carry, and you wouldn't get enough ammo for the gun you actually want to use. Skipping or dropping cards is like that, ultimately you want to have a tighter attache case.

Listening to this live was simultaneously the most infuriating and entertaining Pat moment any of their content has ever seen, never before have they made me want to die so badly while also wishing it would never end

there’s a whole Game Maker’s Toolkit video about developers listening to fan feedback that I highly recommend. It focuses on the corpse mechanic from Darkest Dungeon 1, super interesting

TLDR of the episode: Pat is dumb and wrong

I will say, I think part of the Purpose of Real-Time traveling in a game with a Light System is to make the Light System more engaging. While I agree with Pat that excess Time-until-engagement should be minimized, Darkest Dungeon in both games needs that time so you can determine if you want to do something with your Light Level. They're also games about difficulty, so in DD1 there was also travel time because of Hallway Fights, Traps, Cave-ins, Hunger, and potentially hidden rooms. From my experience with DD2, the light level is less interactive, since you have to find torches along the journey instead of being able to buy them in a consistent manner. Hunger is less of an issue, as food is eaten at Inns. You can potentially see road hazards on the map and choose a different route depending on circumstances. So the only thing Travel Time does is mess with Party Relationships and Stress, which is rough but it's supposed to be a difficult game, and sometimes difficulty is frustration.
