I was SnS main in MHW and Iceborne, but then Rise come out. But yes. SnS is amazing. I remeber beating Fatalis with it. A little bit harder then with other weopons, but it was the Monster Hunter moment for me. Actually, your video made me want to play SnS a bit more on new character. I had like 400-500 hunts on SnS in MHW:I but still backstep is not consistent for me. A little bit annoying. What I've read about it, try to go with shield first, then heavy attack and then backwards input.

Evade Window on SnS to take advantage of the generous i-frames of the backhop is incredible. At level 5, it gives 36 i-frames to the default roll's 13 and the default backhop's 25. Having a huge effective dodge that lets you wiggle out of some silly attacks and counter right into your most powerful combo is huge, it's Muhammad Ali's "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" style perfectly encapsulated.

Just a tip. Whenever you mount a monster with SnS and it's time to perform the finisher, you can time the inputs and shield bash multiple times, either to build or outright K.O the monster. You can hit 7-8 shield bashes, approximately.

the combo is use might pills. they don’t last long but if you trap they last the entirety of 2 PR combos. wkth might pill you can do around 2k dmg per Pr combo. you can get off 2 per trap, 1.5 per wallbang, 1.5 per mount, 1.5 per para and 1.5 per KO. so about 8-10 just in the opening sequence on trappable monsters. easily 12-14k dmg if you pop rocksteady after pop about 3 more and most monsters are done. you can get easy sub 4m hunts in MR on it and easily keep up staggers on velkhana/kushala/teostra where they keep KO permanently

prob the best techs I learned about this weapon, esp with frostcraft is the trick of 1. Guard rolling (block->roll to have weapon unsheathed during the roll) into backstep (right click/circle) Perfect rush 2. Guard rolling into Slinger Burst 3. Slinger burst -> Perfect Rush (optional/whiff) -> Roll Loop especially the 2nd one because it feels like if you get really good at it can perfect rush from anywhere as the distance it covers feels like can perfect rush across the map. Would need to delay the "hold to aim slinger burst" button to not accidentally claw uppercut, then if you time the slinger burst mode keybind into slinger burst shot right, it should skip the mode switch animation and make the mode switch audio sound while at the same time already shooting the burst. Literal animation canceling OP game treats it as if it's been in burst mode from the start. (For those who don't play sns, every time you stow and draw your weapon, holding slinger aim button always resets to now slinger shot by default so it takes a sec and an animation to switch slinger modes) also make sure you are holding a direction for the slinger burst to come out

Immediately saw a Safikhana/Raging set and thought, "How viable with Gamma??" Oh, you know, just a 100% crit element build nothing to see here everything is fiiiiiine. Tbf, I knew how much the SnS could do as my friend swapped back and forth between Greatsword and SnS. And we both maintained that the flexibility of play is what makes SnS so good, like you have 50% of the abilities of every other melee weapon, but it also makes it honestly one of least user friendly weapons to start with as you have ALL THE OPTIONS

With that weapon the Tigrex set was amazing, free meal + earplug and some attack power allows you to sustain offense and heal quickly if you make a mistake. Adding some flinch and tremor resistance and you are good to go. You do not need to focus full on DPS decorations just focus on stability and preventing mjst things stopping you from attacking and you will rack up damage at a suprising rate while being surprisingly not built for damage.

Handicraft is a very commonly used and good skill for the sns. The prinary downside for the sns is that it doesn't have the burst damage output of the dual blades, but it has the same reach issues that cause damage window problems with the dual blades. Basically facing monsters that hover a lot is a really big pain, but other than that your generally pretty good. I didn't want to grind out the frost craft set but if your going for an elemental sns it seems like one of the better options. Another common choice is to go for a non elemental sns build with non elemental damage bonus skill. However this generally uses the fatalis sns and the other options for it aren't very good. Also with most sns weapons you'll have to sharpen a decent amount, at least more than most weapons. The shield attacks that aren't affected by sharpness, also don't do elemental damage which is why I think the non elemental build is popular.

I barely used sns in MHW, but as I beat Alatreon and looked through the weapons, I decided to build myself a dragon sns build. 2 piece velkana, 2 piece raging brachy and a flex slot for legs. Tried it out and it felt so smooth, that I decided to use it against Fatalis. Best decision I made. With heavy artillery on legs and the mentioned combo, I had insane elemental crit DPS, constant access to dragon pods to stagger Fatalis and using a ghillie mantle I got the double canon opener knockdown into a wall bang for 7000 DMG for free. Not to mention roaming ballistas and constant tenderisers on the head and chest. After 10 failed attempts using charge blade, I beat Fatalis solo on my second try, without any gamma sets or weapon augments. And unlike cheese builds in older games (looking at you, kelbi bow) this still needed some skill. (For those who want to try the Fatalis opener: use ghillie. Fly into the Fatalis arena. Load up both canons. Shove the right canon to the right once and the left canon to the right 3 times. Use the right canon to fire 5x450 DMG. Wait for him to charge at you, go to the left canon and use it for another 5x450 DMG. He is now knocked down. Go full combo on his head after tenderizing it once. Pick up one of the dropped pods, wall bang for another 1k of DMG and enrage for agitator)

SnS is arguably better at mounting than Insect Glaive. Glaive only has a single attack that is really dedicated to mounting damage, and it takes a decent bit of commitment to land. SnS has a move like that, too. Where SnS differs is that it can absolutely abuse the environment to mount even faster. Slopes are decent, but ledges are insane. Advancing slash down OR up a ledge, and you get two very fast mounting attacks. And if you have one of those walls you can leap off of, advancing slash up that, and aiming correctly, will do TONS of hits, all with mounting damage. SnS against MR Kulve Taroth is a really good match-up because of those walls. They're a little tough to aim against normal monsters, but Kulve is so big that it's pretty easy, AND you'll get an insane amount of hits on the way down. If there were one of those walls in the Fatalis arena, SnS would probably be the designated "cheese" weapon against Fatalis instead of Swaxe lol.

In my personal opinion, SnS and Insect Glaive are the best weapons for Fatalis simply because of their mobility. It's easy to bait the cone attacks and reposition with them to take advantage of openings. Sure the Swaxe ZSD spam can cheese the fight, but even for me, who mains Swaxe, SnS is still my fastest run at sub 14 minutes.

I've always played SnS sonce I started in Tri, but World SnS is the absolute best. Simply because of Perfect rush, SnS becomes the mini greatsword. Of course the shield bash combo is awesome too. PF being gutted in Rise upset me a lot, but outside of that SnS actually feels even better than in World. The infinite combo is much more convenient not having to turn a different direction, the instant emergency block from the awful counter is so handy, and shoryugeki I really hope Wilds has a best of both worlds between World and Rise SnS

I use sns during things like safi, kulve, behemoth and fatalis mainly because I do it coop and it’s easier to lifepowder that way. But for solo hunts I go with cb.

I just wish they made the sword hits feel "meatier" if that makes sense. It feels almost to have no impact when you hit something with the sword. It needs a touch more oomph behind the attacks. I dont mean GS oomph but just a bit more would be nice.

Recenlty I've started to play MHW on PC and even though I wanted to try a new weapon I just can't help myself but to play SnS once again. It's such a great weapon. My only complain would be that the Perfect Rush does so much damage in comparison to everything else that it's almost pointless to use other combos. Also I'm kind of missing spinning reaper finisher from Rise. On the other hand I absolutely love the spinning slash, shotgun and wall jump! Anyway I'm having blast playing MHW on PC. Stable 165 fps on a wide screen OLED with high res textures and realistic LUT and almost instant loadings turns it into completely different experience in comparison to PS4 version I played before.

If you can afford to reach 100 affinity then just use fatalis set which halves sharpness loss at the same time as being the best armor set
@azkaghafara5712

@@H1r0x not everybody can afford doing fatalis set, but its really easy to hit 100 affnity, wex 3+crit eye 7 is already 90 affinity on weakened part, which is easy to do with sns, and with 90 affinity its pretty much 100 anyway because most of your hit will be critical and the sharpness will not go down with critical hits, also i believe you only need any 2 piece of teostra armor to gain the bonus set which is really easy to get

it’s not unpopular because people think it’s bad it’s just not very flashy it doesn’t have any epic big damage combos so most people just find it boring but each to their own 1/30 is still not bad considering the competition

SnS has been my main weapon since base world. I dabbled in longsword at first, fell in love with Gunlance. Then discovered how fun SnS is. To this day I never went back to longsword since. Only have like 35 total hunts on it and I have over 800 hunts on SnS. SnS was...ok in base game. But all the changes they made to it in Iceborne changed it from being ok. To being borderline broken powerful. With the right build, and in the right hands. It deals some of the highest DPS in the game and has the most versatile moveset in the game to boot. Currently the SnS has one of the fastest speedrun times on Alatreon in the world. Only outdone by heavy bowgun. The main reason people don't play it is because most people who play monster hunter see the cool looking crazy giant weapons and want to play those instead. Or they just pick the weeb stick because it's big sephiroth katana. That and most players really only stick to one weapon, maybe they dabble in two.

I'm returning to MHW as of yesterday. I only ever played with Insect Glaive, and come to find out IG is one of the weakest weapons despite having the ability helicopter tickle monsters. I chose sword and shield as my next weapon to master (relative to my aging ability) in MHW. Do you have any in-depth guides for sword and shield and if not could you recommend any under-rated MHW content creators to check out?

I feel like as far as any weapon goes in the series it can be very situational depending on the kind of hunt you’re doing. Some monsters are just too rambunctious to be able to fully utilize a weapon that is basically meant to be used up close and personal. Monsters like zenogre, Vaal hazak, rajang etc are just too much for a certain type of weapon play style.

The shield deals no ele damage and perfect rush has higher movement values which means its more based on raw. Since u want to use those 2 moves most of the times the fatalis sns beats elemental builds in damage. Moreover u dont have to think about the matchups elemental weakness. Also there are quiet some endgame monster that are raw matchups anyway like nergigante or velkhana where u should use raw anyway. So dont build element, just build fatalis raw, its just better.
